It takes up to 10 years for AIDS to manifest after HIV infection.  Untreated, death occurs in less than a year.  With "treatment" it can suck the life out of you for years.

Here is an excerpt from a talk given by a friend who died of AIDS last Saturday:

It is my strong belief, and personal experience, that in the affected communities, there is a lack of fear of AIDS. As more medical options have become available and survivors can boast of 20 plus years of survival, the focus of the AIDS community has been to sell hope, and manageability,
this they have done effectively! To the detriment of the cause.

Despite all the monstrous side effects from the treatment drugs such as liver damage, teeth rot, nausea, lowered bone density – just to name a few – there is pressure from society, the doctors
and the AIDS community to jump on board and champion this as a manageable disease. To that I want to hoist my middle finger, and say MANAGE THIS! In short folks - take it from a real expert – it is not the pretty picture you are being sold.

They may be able to keep us alive longer, but we are still dying! And there are days when those of us living with this, say it was better in the early days – a quick death. This long term survival can take a heavy toll. It is not much of a life, and for those who live in fear, live with rejection, or shame. Think what their lives are like.

Nasty shtein.  The guy spent the last two years of his life in a wheel chair.  His life revolved around his meds - before meals, after meals, morning night.  Then the meds for controlling the side effects of the meds.

I'd off myself before I ever allowed medication to become my life.  Life isn't so precious that suffering 24/7 is preferable to death.

Is there any more definitive proof that there is no god, or that god truly hates us, than the fact that having some wild monkey sex with a complete stranger can kill you? I mean way to take one of life's most sublime pleasures and turn it into a sterilized walk on the side of caution and boredom.

If you can't laugh at misery-inducing fatal diseases I don't what you can laugh at.

I always get a kick out of people who are offended by gallows humor.  Life isn't so important that you can't make fun of it when things go wrong.  It's like the 9/11 jokes that came out shortly thereafter.  You couldn't make jokes about the president, patriotism, or the circumstances surrounding the events without getting absolutely destroyed by those who were offended. 

I suppose cultural sensitivity has its place but eliminating tasteless jokes or being afraid to make fun of a group shouldn't be the price we pay for it.
