I don't think there's a Phillies fan out there who doesn't despise Chris Wheeler.  I think it says a lot about the Phillies front office that he continues to be a lead broadcaster on their telecasts despite nearly every fan who watches hating his guts.

It's like how they make the worst possible decisions on the field.  Anyone with even a passing knowledge of the game could do a better job of constructing the team and making on-field decisions, yet they stick with doing it "the Phillies way."

The broadcasters suck.  The team is mediocre.  Yet they continue on without listening to the concerns of the people who pay the bills.  But why should they?  Hell - we're dumb enough to keep supporting them by watching the games, going to the ballpark in record numbers, buying jerseys and other crap from them.  Why should they change when we, the fans, refuse to?

There was a HORRIBLE article on HK in Philadelphia Magazine a month or so ago. Said that Philly fans UNFAIRLY don't like Wheeler because he's gunning for harry's job.

Yeah. THAT'S why we dont' like him.

fargtard.

Here's the quote:

QuoteIt's also a result of his public falling-out with on-air sidekick Chris Wheeler in 2004. The upshot: Wheeler was branded as a schemer gunning for Kalas's job. Unfair as that was, Wheeler's popularity plummeted, and a lesson was learned: Players and managers may come and go, but Harry is untouchable.

Yup, again, that's why Wheeler's popularity plummeted.

When did Wheels ever HAVE popularity?  ::)

He's been a pedantic jackass since his days on PRISM but that's never stopped the Phillies from putting him on the air night after night for almost 30 years.

Same guys behind Cole Hamels Facts did that. The Wheeler one is much funnier.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Cole Hamels is definitely not going to sign long-term with the Phils.

Philly Crew

From ESPN's Rumblings:

"Then there's Eric Gagne. A team trading for him could owe him close to $6 million for the rest of the year, between his salary and games-finished incentives. The only big-market contenders his contract allows him to get traded to are the Red Sox, Angels and Yankees. And he won't waive his no-trade to go anywhere else unless he becomes the closer, because it could cost him millions of dollars in incentives. So what contenders could even consider making him their closer? Possibly the Phillies or Cubs. Maybe the Braves. But that's about it. And those teams have other reasons not to deal for him. So the Rangers are facing a very limited market."

I would love to see the Phils get Gagne and move Myers back to the rotation.

Getting Gagne and returning Myers to the rotation makes perfect sense.

Therefore, no way it happens.  Ever.

NGM

I'd rather see the Phils go after Joe Nathan, whom, according to Yahoo Rumors, is available.  Apparently the Twins are trying to get rid of his contract to free up money for a new contract for Santana.

Of course this will never happen and it is only a rumor but no "big market" team that is in contention needs a closer outside of the Cubs, so why not?

A 31 year old power pitcher who hasn't pitched an entire season in about 4 years?

Yeah...sign him up. Leiber, Gordon, and Myers need a 4th for their DL Poker game,

I don't think I want them to get anyone. Seriously.

Is an extra BP arm going to really help? It may. And that is only if Gordon can piecemeal his torn labrum together for the rest of the year as a set up guy to Myers, and he has to be healthy too.

Is a Kyle Lohse type guy going to make a difference? As a 5th starter, yes. Then you put Real Deal Durbin in the pen and send Clay Condrey to the grave.

But the problem I have, as Hagen points out today (or was it Salisbury, I cant recall), teams are asking for a TON in return for even marginal pitching.

The White Sox asked the Rockies for the top two prospect for JOSE CONTRERAS. Crazy.

The same article discusses them dealing Mike Bourn. Call me crazy, but I DO NOT want them trading Bourn. So if it means not getting a Kyle Lohse or some slop-armed bullpen hack so be it. This team ain't doing shtein anyways. No reason to deplete the farm system any more than it already is.

I don't care how he is pitching right now.

He's a closer on a bad team. Do you know how many times he's pitched a full inning on back to back days? Three times. And once he gave up 2 runs on day two. A team in contention (which the phillies wont be) needs a guy that can throw 4 of 6 days. Gagne is not that guy, especially in what the Rangers are asking for him.
