Burrell just crushed one to left.  7-1 Phils.

Rome

Madson did his best to make the game interesting but somehow got out of jam in the 8th.

8-2 Phils.

By the way - I don't know if anyone else noticed this but there are a TON of insanely hot broads in Houston.

Jeebus.

Steve Carlton routinely led the league in home runs allowed and he won four Cy Young's.

he did give up a decent amount of homers...but only led the league once...and i dont believe he was even in the top ten in any of his cy young years...im not saying cole needs to give up the fewest amount of homers in the league and im resigned to the fact that hes gonna give up his share being in the bank half his starts but he must cut down on them...leading the league is unacceptable
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

Strikeout pitchers routinely give up a lot of HR's. Carlton did, Schilling did, Johnson did. It's just part of the game for a strikeout pitcher.

Rome

The Hall of Fame is littered with pitchers who gave up a ton of home runs in their careers.  Robin Roberts, for instance, gave up a staggering number of home runs in his career (505) yet somehow he managed to win 286 games.

Carlton himself gave up 414 dingers yet managed to win 329 games.

Great pitchers are always around the strike zone.  When you constantly throw strikes the occasional mistake will happen and if you throw a mistake to a major league hitter, it's going to go a long way.

Rome

Carlton only led the league in HR allowed once but he was consistently in the top 10 and often in the top 5.

1974 NL-21-6

1977 NL-25-7
1978 NL-30-1
1979 NL-25-4
1983 NL-20-9
Car-414-9

He's 9th all-time in ML history in HR's allowed.

right so one cy young year he was in the TOP TEN...big deal...romey was saying he regularly led the league...like i said you cant lead the league in homers like hamels and expect to win multiple cy youngs...carlton only led the league once in his entire career...hamels in his first full season is leading the league...that cant continue

you guys are funny comparing a 23 year old to one of the greatest pitchers of all time

Basically it's showing igy that King can give up 2 solo homers a game and still be dominant. Sure he'll be top 5 in the league in homers allowed, but he'll walk home with cy youngs out the icehole.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

So, when do we make reservations for Hamels' Hall of Fame induction?

Wingspan

Also a pitcher who gives up a HR's and isnt dominant in most other facets of the game will not be in a rotation long enough to lead the league in HR's allowed.

HR's allowed is one of those skewed stats that only tell a story when you want it to.
