O'Fallon, MO ranked as 9th best place to live in America

Despite someone named Father Demon living within its borders.

O'FALLON, MO. — Rapidly growing O'Fallon has again gained national recognition as a great place to call home.

Relocate-America.com, a website for consumers featuring profiles and statistics on communities throughout the nation, ranked the city ninth in a top 10 listing of best places to live in the country. Asheville, N.C., Traverse City, Mich., and Utica, N.Y., ranked first, second and third. The rest of the list is Chicago; Cary, N.C.; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Stevens Point, Wis.; and Spencer, Iowa.

The website is owned by HomeRoute, a company in Howell, Mich., that provides marketing services to real estate professionals.

The website also listed its choice for the 100 best communities in the nation but did not rank them. Lee's Summit was the only other city recognized from Missouri. In addition to Chicago, three were from Illinois: Champaign, Naperville and Urbana.

This is the second time in less than a year that O'Fallon has had reason to celebrate. Last July, O'Fallon was named the 39th best place to live in America by Money magazine. In that ranking Naperville, Ill., ranked No. 1.

"With all the facilities we have and with our low crime rate, it just proves that Money magazine was right," O'Fallon City Council President Bill Hennessy said of the newest honor.

To make the cut, cities on the list first had to be nominated by residents from the communities. Officials with the website then evaluated statistics on education, employment, the economy, crime, parks, recreation, the environment and housing to devise the final ranking, said HomeRoute President and CEO Steve Nickerson.

O'Fallon can partly give thanks for its ranking to Ashley Radke, 37, a 12-year city resident who lives in O'Fallon's WingHaven area. For several years Radke, a real estate agent who is listed as a relocation contact on the site, said she made it her mission to get residents and businesses to visit the website and nominate O'Fallon. Her campaign included printing business cards that urged people to cast a vote, hanging up posters in local restaurants about the nomination and putting information in community welcome baskets for new residents.

"I made a public declaration, let's make O'Fallon one of the top places to live," Radke said, citing housing, jobs and medical care, "all the key elements to get recognized."

Nickerson said O'Fallon residents were enthusiastic in their nominations, describing great work opportunities, schools and a small-town feel. The city also had impressive statistics regarding school quality, shopping, low crime, housing choices and location, he said.

"A lot of surveys out there tend to be just data driven," Nickerson said. "Ours is a blend of real people with real feedback and real passions for their community."

O'Fallon has a population estimated at 72,000. More than half of its residents have been in the city fewer than 10 years. In addition to being the longtime world headquarters of MEMC Electronic Materials, a manufacturer of silicon wafers, O'Fallon has lured other large companies to its boundaries in the past several years, including MasterCard International's Global Technology headquarters, CitiMortgage and American Power Conversion, a manufacturer of power sources for the computer industry.

"I just love it here," Radke said.

Cary, NC is right next to where I live.  Basically, we get all the features of living in Cary (including the nicely growing real estate values) with less of the property taxes.
