Not neccessarily true.  The Confederation wasn't "about" slavery, it was about wanting to break away from the north.  General Robert E. Lee was against slavery and felt it was an immoral practice.  And even at it's height, slave owners in the US never exceeded 10%.

a large part of it most definitely WAS about slavery

"the south was built on slavery" was something you often heard back then when defeding their rights to own slaves

anyway even if you believe it was all about pride my intial question still stands...why is a dood from detroit rockin the confederate flag?

Quote from: Seabiscuit36 on January 23, 2007, 12:42:34 PMSo i posted before about my buddy and his exfiance.  He's avoided bedding her up to this point.  Her friend called him saturday to find out if he had his ex's address, she was going to send the police there because of her being depressed.  Nothing happened, but today he gets a call from that same girl who told him that his ex was asking her if my boy wants to get back together, even for just a hook up.  She's now married.  He avoids her like the plague and it doesnt matter to her.

This post reads like MDS re-capping the big season opener for The O.C.

I'm not that lame, son. Don't watch The OC.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

It's both.

Ted Nugent is a gun-toting, right-wing nutjob, regardless of his reasoning for wearing the stars and bars.

The stars & bars is a farging disgrace that should be tossed on the ash heap of history along with other symbols of oppression like the Andy Reid playbook, the Swastika, the Little Red Book & the Bible.

Sounds like you all live in a farging trailer park.

Dump your friend and his farged up ex and start associating with people who don't attract interest from the booking agent for Jerry Springer.

What's the little red book?  Is that a commie reference?

Also...you've got a fascist inside trying to get out.  You do know that you're actually a republican, right?

Good advice...but keep an eye out for when she (or he...or both) decide to go postal in your workplace.

You're seriously going to sit there and defend the Confederation on this board?

Not really.  I think that anyone sporting the "stars and bars" are mostly inbred redneck idiots.  But at the same time, I don't think that the confederate flag is a true symbol of racism or hate towards blacks.......at least that wasn't the original intent when it was designed.  The perception of that flag has been skewed due to the manner it has been used in more recent times, as Dio pointed out.

Does less than 10% really constitute a "large part of it?"

And the US was built on slavery, not just the south.

As for why Nugent was rocking it?  Who knows?  He says it's because the south were viewed as rebels and he thinks he's a rebel too.  Or maybe he's racist.  Or maybe he's a racist rebel.

The only point that I'm trying to make is that the confederacy wasn't all about slavery, hate and racism as many people commonly think today.  And the flag has itself can have duel meaning to it so seeing a person wearing it on a shirt or flying the flag from their home does not mean that the individual is an automatic racist.

Yet, we still don't have a national museum to commemorate it, study it, teach about it.  Wonder why?
go donate here:  http://www.usnationalslaverymuseum.org/home.asp
I did.  Boggles my mind that we have the much celebrated Holocaust museum..which didn't even happen here, but we don't have a Slavery museum.

You might as well argue that, since Hitler youth planted trees, the Nazis weren't all about the final solution.  The flag represented people who fought to keep slavery.  Get it?  They fought and died so they could own slaves.  Then, it was used by people who didn't want to sit in the same restaurant as black people.  That's the end of the story.  If you're sporting a "rebel" flag, then you are at the very least exceptionally stupid, and in all probability, also racist.
I'd like to see rappers start wearing that thing.  Take it back like they did the N word, and watch the trailer trash go squeamish on the thing.

Also...a point that bears noting:  Confederates did not consider themeselves rebels.  They thought they were patriots, and if you called one of 'em a rebel, you were uttering fighting words.  Further prood that Nuge is a dummy.

What about the black southerners who fought under that flag? Are they racists too?
