Penny showed no balls in the playoffs (albeit hurt), but his mental toughness wasn't there. Schmidt is better than his record shows. Giants just weren't producing runs for him...but he's almost a guaranteed win.

I love this guy. Penny for a hitter...something in the 5 oe 6 spot would be perfect.  Yees. :evil

It's going to be a lot of 2-1 games again...

Another Dodgers note:  looks like they'll sign Lieberthal to a 1-yr deal for $1M with an option for 2008...

Another bullpen guy is off the market as Alan Embree signed with Oakland.  Looks like Piazza is heading there too....

What's the skinny on Lieberthal?

Is he solid...as a backup catcher?

He hit well last year. His first year doing so since 2003. Odds are he'll get injured at some point, but 1-2 days a week he'll be decent. Good guy, slowly balding.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

He's from Glendale...about 10 minutes from where I live, next to pasadena....

I wonder how many times during each game he plays I'll have to listen to 'He's a local kid...blah, blah, blah'.

seems to always be on the DL with a bad knee, bad groin or bad back.  Always plays well at Dodger Stadium though...

Some notes from a source down at the meetings:

Brad Penny is the latest starter to be linked to the Mets, the word from LA sources is that Schmidt's signing makes him expendable...

- The Rich Harden/Joe Blanton to the Mets rumors are being leaked by Oakland, not the other way around. What motivation they would have to do this is puzzling.

- Baltimore execs have been on the phone non-stop in the lobby for 45 minutes now, and at one point GMs Jim Duquette and have been huddling, and one of our baseball sources said that the Reds are trying to acquire Rodrigo Lopez.

- Also, one O's insider suggested that the Mets have inquired about 2B Brian Roberts.

- Industry sources insist that the Minnesota Twins are actively trying to convince Steve Trachsel to sign a one-year deal.

- The Devil Rays and Marlins are said to be discussing a Rocco Baldelli-Yusmeiro Petit (and another player) swap.

Trade:

Horacio Ramirez to Seattle
Rafael Soriano to Atlanta

Piazza to Oakland is now official....1 yr, $8.5M

BigEd76

Luis Gonzalez to the Dodgers too.....1 yr

Rumored trade:  Jon Garland to the Astros for Willy Taveras, Taylor Buchholz and Jason Hirsh

In the Rule V draft today, the Cubs selected the tattooed druggie Josh Hamilton and traded him to the Reds, who will give him a shot to stick around as a backup corner OF.
