How is that relevant to today's taterskins?  It isn't.  IGY thinking the name taterskin is somehow derogatory just continues the cartoonery that is IGY.

taterskin" is a racist epithet for Native Americans and one of the color metaphors for race used in North America and Europe since invasion by Europeans.

And before you go all "But our owner named them the taterskins because he wanted to honor our coach who was PART Sioux".  Well, then, shut the farg up.

The name taterskins would later be used for a NFL football team. The team was originally known as the Boston Braves, but changed to the Boston taterskins when they left Braves field for Fenway Park. The name "taterskins," according to sports lore, was chosen to "honor" the team's coach, William "Lone Star" Dietz, whose mother was allegedly "Sioux". Indian Country Today debunked this myth as pure fabrication with no basis in fact at all. Dietz was entirely of European ancestry. In 1937 the team moved to Washington, D.C. and became the Washington taterskins, joining Capital Hill as the second football team of Washington, D.C..

I mean it might be a little insensitive, but really...I have plenty of other things to point and laugh at without needing to call them racists for having the football team named taterskins. I mean I'm sure it was degrading to Native Americans to have white people call them "Cheif" too, but no one's crying about Kansas City's name.

A Chief is the head of the tribe, it's also a rank in the Navy, it's not nearly as degrading as the name 'taterskin' is.

By today's standards maybe...but think about it back then. That's like goin up to an Irishman and saying "hey, mick" or going up to an Italian guy and sayin "Hey Tony" or going up to a hispanic guy and saying "hey, Juan". Not every Irish guy was named Mick, not every Italian guy was named Tony, and not every hispanic guy was named Juan. I can envision Archie Bunker in the stuck elevator talking to the young hispanic couple as I speak. Not every Native American would like a white guy saying "hey, cheif" to him.

Kansas City Cheiftens (sp?) or Kansays City Warcheifs might be more "acceptable", but who the farg cares? People make too big of an issue out of shtein these days.
