Lidle wins first start for Yankees

QuoteNEW YORK (AP) -- Cory Lidle pitched six effective innings in his first start with the Yankees and Jason Giambi hit a three-run homer to help New York beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-1 Thursday for its fourth straight win.

Lidle allowed one run and four hits on a steamy afternoon at Yankee Stadium in his first outing since being acquired from the Phillies on Sunday. New York sent four minor league prospects to Philadelphia for Lidle and right fielder Bobby Abreu, who had three hits and is 5-for-13 in three games since joining his new club.

The old school Astros jerseys are so ugly and yet so classic.

PhillyPhreak54

Greg maddux was no-hitting Cincy through 6 in his LA debut.

LA leads 2-0 in the top of the 7th but they are in a rain delay.

Maddux is probably done because of the rain now.

Let's go LA.

If Cincy loses we're 3.5 out. :paranoid

QuoteWith Andruw Jones only days away from gaining trade veto power, the All-Star center fielder was claimed on waivers by an unnamed team, leaving the Braves until 1 p.m. ET Saturday to decide whether to take their last opportunity to deal Jones unfettered.

That Jones was placed on waivers is unremarkable; he was one of hundreds of players, including many stars, who were placed on waivers earlier this week. What makes Jones' situation interesting is that on Aug. 15, he will gain 10-and-5 rights -- 10 years in the big leagues, five with the same team -- to block any proposed trade.

Multiple teams placed claims on Jones, according to major-league sources. But on Thursday afternoon, one team was awarded a claim on Jones. Now the Braves have two choices -- either work out a trade with the team who placed the claim by Saturday or pull Jones back from waivers. If they pull him back, they cannot trade him again for the rest of this season.

Jones' value in the trade market is relatively high right now, because he is a highly productive player locked up for only one more year -- at $13.5 million -- at a time when players like Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee might command $70 million packages on the free-agent market.

The Boston Red Sox tried to deal for Jones leading up to the trade deadline, with some intent to try to flip him to the Houston Astros for Roy Oswalt. Some scouts also think that the Los Angeles Angels, who've been looking for a bat, might have high interest in Jones.

Atlanta GM John Schuerholz, reached on his cell phone, said Friday afternoon that he would not comment on the team's internal business.

From ESPN.com...

Andruw in LF for the Phils...be nice but not happening.

I bet Oswalt for Andruw and he goes to HOU>

Dillen

Oswalt isnt on the block. Purpura isnt stupid enough to trade the only proven starting pitcher for next season.

PhillyPhreak54

He was pretty close to being dealt the other day had Angelos not refused to give up Tejada...

Dillen

That was just a rumor though, hopefully it had no real base. If Purpura traded Oswalt I'd give up on the Astros like people have given up on the Sixers. I mean like the badasses that havent watched a Sixer game in over 3 years.

PhillyPhreak54

I dunno, man. I read the NY papers and they said it was all done except for Angelos meddling in at the final minute.

Please note the Kansas City Royals at the bottom of the A.L. standings...  THEY STILL HAVE A CHANCE!!!111!!11

Randy Johnson took a no-no into the 7th. ESPN was gettin lubed up to praise him and then he blew it. He lost the shutout too.

Bobby Abreu had his first NY HR tonight and played some CF after Damon went down.

Miguel Tejada gave the finger to the fans in Toronto today.
