Brett Myers Atones For Punching Wife With Solid Seven-Inning Outing
July 17, 2006 | Reuters

SAN FRANCISCO—Three weeks after hitting his wife on a Boston street, Phillies pitcher Brett Myers made up for the costly miscue by coming back strong and tossing seven quality innings en route to a 6-2 victory over the Giants Sunday. "When you let your emotions get the best of you and make a silly error like Brett did when he repeatedly struck his wife in the face, the only way to atone for it is to get right back on the baseball field, put that past performance behind you, and pitch deep into an important game while maintaining consistent velocity and pinpoint control," manager Charlie Manuel said. "This outing is exactly what Bretty needed to get the fans to stop thinking about him as someone who physically abuses his spouse." Philadelphia fans and media, who had earlier called for a public apology from Myers, have dropped this demand in light of Myers' impressive total of seven strikeouts.

I'd take a shot on Hillenbrand.   Look at the comments from his teammates.  If a guy like Vernon Wells sticks up for you, how bad can you be?

Eh - this season's over anyway, so why bother?

FYI:  Tim Kurkijan doesn't think the Phils will actually trade Abreu until maybe the off-season.

Jayson Stark was saying the same thing.  So are most of the ESPN "experts."

Expect him to be gone by July 31.

I dont want to trade him unless we get real prospects back.  The Thome trade being a great example.  This isnt a case of addition by subtraction like patricia would be.

ALEX LAUGHS AT PHILLIES TRADE RUMOR
By GEORGE KING

July 21, 2006 -- TORONTO - Alex Rodriguez laughed when a trade rumor that circulated through Wall Street yesterday was relayed to him.

"It doesn't make any difference," Rodriguez said of the rumor that had the Yankees third baseman going to the Phillies as part of a blockbuster trade for Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, Tom Gordon and David Bell, with the Yankees supposedly also sending Melky Cabrera and a player to be named. "I would veto it."

Though Rodriguez has become the Yankee Stadium boo birds' No. 1 target, the abuse hasn't come close to having him waive the blanket no-trade clause in his contract.

A Phillies official laughed at the rumor.

Rodriguez said his bruised left big toe was feeling better and he expected to play all four games against the Blue Jays on the artificial turf at Rogers Centre.

That's hilarious and almost as outlandish as that reported 8-team deal involving Iverson.

According to the Toronto papers, the Phils and Angels have inquired about Hillenbrand

Isn't Hillenbrand's defense atrocious?

Good. He'll fit right in then.

Apparently, so is his lack of maturity and general attitude.

So, you're right, he'll fit right in.

6-3 Phils, bottom of the 8th.  Utley had the bases loaded with 2 outs and smoked a two-run single up the middle to give the Phils some breathing room.

Nice piece of hitting there.

And even better, the Braves screwed up twice to allow it to happen.  Cox left a rightie in to face Utley and Rollins got an infield hit when the pitcher failed to cover first.
