While comparing Reed to the Eagles' safeties is ridiculous for a variety of reasons, this will certainly have an impact on contract negotiations. More's the pity.

Sure, it means something to Lewis.  Maybe to Dawkins.  But the Eagles don't care.  Neither dude is anywhere close to as good as Reed, and they aren't going to pay extra coin just because the best safety in the NFL just got paid.

When the ceiling rises dramatically for pay at a position, all the other players who play the position are affected regardless of their talent or production.

As I stated before, the Eagles aren't going to pay more but other teams would.  That's why my first post read the way it did.

Barring some unforseen miracle where Dawkins says "farg it" and stays for a big-time hometown discount, both players will be leaving at the end of 2006.

Dawkins will be here. He's still a top safety and takes care of his body better then TO does. He's also the heart and soul of the team, and the Eagles know there would be a HUGE uproar if he is let go.

If Dawk was the same age or close to the same age as Reed this would have a bigger impact. If Mike Lewis, even though I like him and hope he returns, walked into the Eagles FO and asked for this kind of money he'd be laughed right on outta there.

what youre saying is the eagles arent gonna pay for dawkins because they are frugal...and i agree...but that was most likely happening with or without reed signing...trust me reid and dawkins situations couldnt be more opposite at this stage

btw the reed siging was not idiotic...hes the best safety in the game (tho sean taylor will pass him soon) and an unbelievable playmaker

reed in six less seasons has the same amt of td's as dawkins and only six less interceptions...nothing against dawk because he has been outstanding in his career...but reed is much better now and will end up being much better

year two - 2nd team all nfl
year three - nfl defensive player of the year
year four - only played ten games due to injury
