He has shown he can pitch big and bear down when need be.

when has he done this?

wasnt yesterday...in the midst of a losing streak, when a good pitching performance was needed?

"Retired" so he wouldn't face the embarrassment of being released, probably.

Either way, it's all good. GO COSTE!  :yay

Coste and his under .200 ba  :yay
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

It must not be clutch time, as Abreu hit a 3-run HR to extend the Phils' lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the 6th.

Just about dead center, too.

BigEd76

needs a double for the cycle

Bums win.  :)

Yet somehow they made a 5-run 9th inning lead look tenuous.

Nice win today. A much needed win, I must say.

1. Bobby Abreu has got his swing worked out. He started getting back on track in MIL and he continued it this weekend. With Jimmy still in a funk and with Rowand still out, they needed Bobby to step it up. The offense had been whatever Chase Utley and Ryan Howard could muster up by themselves lately.

2. Speaking of Jimmy, he better pull his head out of his ass and get back to the way he was swinging earlier. I don't care if he's a free swinger and likes to be aggressive and go after the ball. But if you're going to be that type of a hitter you have to be mechanically sound. Jimmy's front shoulder starts flying open and he gets that ever-so-slight uppercut in his swing and it fargs him up.

What I am tired of hearing is how Aaron Rowand or Bobby Abreu should lead off. We know Jimmy is not a prototypical leadoff guy. Charlie knows that as does Gillick. But the options other than Jimmy are not right. Rowand's OBP is not great and he doesn't walk a lot. He is best suited for the 6th hole. Jimmy's best suited for the 7th hole. I'll tell you who I would love to see here next year....Chone Figgins. He'd replace David Bell and bat leadoff. Maybe they can acquire him via trade (Bobby A to the Angels for Figgins and a pitcher?) in the offseason.

3. Nice to see Alex Gonzalez getting released, er, I mean retiring. He stunk.

4. They need to win 2/3 from the Mets. They're throwing out two slop pitchers on WED & THU.

Oh, yeah. Did y'all catch the comment made by David Wells where he suggested that David Dellucci was on the juice last year?

Ladies and gentleman, I give you Bill Conlin's opening line in his column today;

QuoteGOOD MORNING, Philadelphia. And how does it feel being Terry Francona's bitch?
