The Phillies pulled to within one game of the lead in the NL East on Sunday by completing a three-game sweep of the Reds on the road.

After having their nine-game winning streak halted last week, the Phillies have kept right on rolling by winning four straight.

The contributions recently have come from their starting pitchers (Ryan Howard's two home runs coming off the bench not withstanding) and unlikely sources, like Shane Victorino, who is 9-for-16 since replacing Aaron Rowand in center field.

Suddenly, a sizable lead for the Mets isn't so safe anymore as they begin a three-game series in St. Louis on Tuesday. The Phillies head to Milwaukee for a three-game series, also beginning on Tuesday, with a chance to move into first place.

The Phillies over their last 14 games:
                                    Note
W-L           13-1             Only loss is to Tom Glavine, who has a 2.19 ERA
BA            .266              Matches their batting average for the season
Runs/game  5.4              Scored two runs in three of last four games, won all four
ERA           2.95              0.77 ERA in last four games

This team has me tempted to either get MLB Extra Innings on DTV or pay to watch it on my computer.  I don't think I'm going to do either though because in true Phillies fashion they'll ride a 12 game losing streak and get swept by the Royals (even though they aren't on the schedule) as soon as I drop some coin on them.

YOU'RE NOT WELCOME AT THE PARADE, SARGENT PARTY POOPER
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

FYI...

I was reading on the PhilaPhans MB that Lieby had the MRI today and they found a fracture in his knee and he will be out for at least another month.

Also...

They asked Rowand about the For who? For what? comments by Ricky Watters...

His answer?

For who? My teammates.

For what? Winning.

good numbers but they are still dead last in the league in batting with runner in scoring position...that needs to improve...rollins also needs to start getting on base again...hes back to swinging for the fences everytime up...the pitching is not going to hold up so the offense has to be top notch to give them a chance this year
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

He said he'll be back next week and doesn't need to be like Richard Hamilton....
I am thinking slot receiver in the off season. The man is fearless.
Alert, alert. Look well at the rainbow. The fish will be running very soon.

Had the same line of thinking regarding Rollins during the entire Reds series, I wouldn't mind seeing him switched to the 2 hole for a couple of games making way for Victorino to bat leadoff.

ESPN's Insider Rumor Bit:

Filling the Godzilla void
May 16 - The Yankees remain interested in trading for a left fielder, The New York Post reports. Brad Wilkerson, Raul Ibanez, Alfonso Soriano, Torii Hunter, Reggie Sanders Aubrey Huff, Craig Wilson and Shannon Stewart are all on the list.

According to the New York Daily News, the Yanks also are expected to inquire about the availability of Philadelphia's Bobby Abreu.

The Marlins, who are shedding salary, could decide to trade Miguel Cabrera, but the Yankees probably don't have enough to land him, the Hartford Courant reports.

Hmm....who do you think the Yanks would be willing to part with?

Typically useless ESPN Insider crap.  The Yankees don't have enough to land Cabrera but they do have enough to land Abreu?

I see.   ::)

Also, someone should let them know that Abreu is a right fielder, not a left fielder.

PoopyfaceMcGee

Well, Abreu should be able to play left... but the reports I heard were that the Yanks would only have to give up some mid-level prospects, because the Phils want to get Abreu's salary off the books.

I don't think that's close to the truth at all.

hunt

meh.
most of the yanks' better prospects are very young...i guess i'd take abreu for a few guys who may or may not even make it to the majors.
i have a feeling shef will be gone after this year so it kinda makes sense.
lemonade was a popular drink and it still is

The Yankees never give up anything other than prospects anyway.  If the Phils trade Abreu...i want immediate impact.
