the US hockey team is brutal to watch.  no finishers, but a bunch of big, slow guys who can hit.

Did anyone here really expect them to win anything? If I were a Canada fan, I'd be fuming right now that they are getting so embarrassed.

Canada right now = Philadelphia after 0-2 start to the 2003 Eagles season

and I didn't really expect much out of the US team, but they are playing so well in every other area, it's frustrating that they can't get more than 1 goal a game, they had two 5 on 3's for almost the full 2 minutes yesterday and barely got any good shots off.

How can you expect much when your coach is an Islanders castoff?  (yes, I know he's the coach of the 2nd-best team in the NHL right now)

Dick or not, that's a welcome milestone.

I think the more we see things like this as special accomplishments, the firmer the lines between races become.

QuoteVIENNA (Reuters) - Italian prosecutors found more than 100 syringes and 30 packs of drugs, including asthma drugs and antidepressants, in a raid on Austrian Winter Olympics bases, an Italian prosecutor told Austrian television.

They also seized devices for blood testing and blood transfusions in the raid on Saturday on the country's biathlon and cross-country teams, Austrian state television ORF said on its Web site on Monday, quoting Turin prosecutor Raffaele Guariniello.

ORF also quoted another Turin prosecutor, Marcello Maddalena, as saying the raids were coordinated closely with the International Olympic Committee and the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Maddalena said officials tried to avoid disturbing the athletes too much.

"But a raid is a raid," ORF quoted Maddalena as saying. "You cannot announce it in advance, nor can you put on your velvet gloves."

Interesting.  I see it the other way around.

The more we accentuate how different races are, the less alike we feel.  Pretty simple.

I don't think this accentuates any difference between races.  I think it says quite the contrary.  It says "Look, black people can do this too."

I think I see the point you're getting at though.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you're trying to say that by even mentioning race, it keeps it at the front of everyone's mind.  Instead of this guy just being a guy who won a medal, he's a black guy who won a medal.

Exactly.  Instead of him being a great American athlete, who happens to be of Black descent... he's a great Black athlete, who happens to be American.

You have to try and look at it from a black perspective though.  (Granted, I'm not exactly the resident expert but I think I'm able to give a somewhat unbiased and realistic opinion since I grew up with a black step brother/step mom and their family).  If there was no mention of race then the black community would feel like they've been over looked.  Granted, I think everyone can tell by looking at the guy so I don't see the point in mention his race, but at the same time, a lot of accomplishments by minorities in this country have gone unnoticed and uncelebrated in the media.

Hopefully there will be a day when both black and white people can just look at each other as people without race being an issue.  But sadly, that still isn't the case and it won't be the case until black people succeed in EVERY area that white people do.  This includes all types of sports, business, science, etc.  Until that time comes, the first time a black (or any minority for that matter) person does something that a person of that race hasn't done before it will still be celebrated as a racial achievment rather than an individual accomplishment.

Does anyone know if medal winners get a cash prize along with their medal?  I've been looking for the answer but I've found stats that say both yes and no.

PhillyPhreak54

If you win gold you get $25K I believe.

That speedskater dude who won the first medal donated his to some 3rd world country.
