QuoteJets eye Birds coach

One day after releasing Mike Heimerdinger from his contract, the Jets focused their offensive-coordinator search on Pat Shurmur, the Eagles' quarterbacks coach.
The Jets have a strong interest in Shurmur, according to a league source, but it wasn't known whether they had received permission from the Eagles to interview him. By rule, the Eagles can prevent him from talking to another team about a coordinator position.

Shurmur, 40, has no experience as a coordinator and he has no prior experience with coach Eric Mangini.

He has spent the last seven years with the Eagles, the first three as the tight ends coach, the last four tutoring the quarterbacks. Donovan McNabb always has spoken highly of Shurmur, a nephew of the late Fritz Shurmur, who won a Super Bowl as the Packers' defensive coordinator.

If Shurmur goes... I can only hope Shurmur has developed a strong, strong, STRONG relationship with Mike McMahon.

good riddance...mcnabb needs someone hes not totally comfortable with...someone to push him and get his fat ass running again...less worm burners and big game interceptions wouldnt hurt either

What was his completion % in 2004?

2005 = null and void due to not being able to properly set up to throw.

i dont care what it was...the eagles are stagnant...they need some people who wont coddle mcnabb like reid and company do...you cant start a fire without a spark baby

I'm not arguing that I wouldn't mind seeing a new QB coach. But I get tired of hearing the worm burner stuff. His accuracy got much better in 2004 from previous years.

ice grillin you

im half joking about that...id just like to see someone challange mcnabb to be better and more importantly do everyhting possible (RUN MF'ER RUN!) to help the eagles win

his laissez faire attitude may be a result of the kind of person he is..but i dont think so cause i saw him in college as a firey leader who did things such as get in teammates faces and do anything to win...thus i can only assume hes the way he is now because of the infrastructure around him...and that needs to change

That's just the way some people are, man. He's a lead by example type. And the fact that he was laid back in college says to me that no matter who the Eagles coaches are they won't get him to be a in your face dude. Many say Reid has imposed that on him but he hasn't...that's just Donovan. And if thats how he is, what can you do?

You know how people look at other people. If you have a guy who is all laid back but leads by example and all of a sudden starts being a hardass that could hurt. People could say "who does this jerk think he is?" I've seen guys get laughed at for trying to be vocal when that isn't their style.

Just win me some games. Thats all I want.

ice grillin you

he was much more vocal and demonstrative in college...there he led by example and by getting heated...now hes like a blob...a team takes on the personality of its coach...and the eagles have certainly done that since reid arrived...we talked about cowher the other day....look at pittsburghs players and then look at the eagles...its almost sad the difference

Is any other team looking at Shurmur for a coordinator position?  That's why the Jets are pathetic.  Their last four coaches have fired them, and now they're fixin' to put an QB coach with no OC experience in charge of their offense.

I won't care if Shurmur goes at all.   The only reason I can see for keeping the guy would be to maintain the status quo, and that is rarely decent justification for anything.  Moreover, there are much bigger problems than QB coaching if Donovan can't win with a different QB coach.

Incidentally...has Shurmur got anything going for him other than being Fritz' son?  Was he that great as a TE coach, or as QB coach?  My (pretty un-informed) impression is that he's been pedestrian at best.

Well, the Jets went with the other case of hiring someone's relative...

They hired Marty Schottenheimer's son.

LBIggle

if he goes, he goes.  mcnabb is what he is now.. and im willing to bet reid had more to do with mcnabbs development then a qb coach.

PhillyPhreak54

He's not going.  The Jets hired Schottenheimer's kid.

Childress was McNabb's early QB coach. He had a lot to do with developing Donny.

I don't care if we lose Shurmur to the Jets. Does anyone know if they are considering hiring anyone else?
