UM recruit shops around
From Miami Herald Staff

Top University of Miami recruit Pat Devlin, a quarterback from Downington East High School in Exton, Pa., called Hurricanes coach Larry Coker last week to tell him he was keeping his options open for other schools.

''He's exploring Virginia and Penn State,'' Mike Matta, Devlin's high school coach, told The Miami Herald on Wednesday.

Matta said he was with Devlin last Thursday when the senior called Coker.
``Coach Coker told me he understood Pat's feelings, but he was going to do everything in his power to make Pat feel comfortable -- because he's a priority.
``I explained that [former UM offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach]

Dan Werner never said anything negative, and he told Pat he should go to Miami. I think he should, too. But ultimately, it's Pat's decision.''
Werner, who recruited Devlin and has been friends with Matta for years, was one of four coaches fired by Coker on Jan. 2.

A voice mail message left at Devlin's home Wednesday night was not returned.
''He said he's still committed to Miami,'' Matta said, ``but he might want to visit other schools.''

Devlin, Pennsylvania's Gatorade Player of the Year, has been heavily recruited by Penn State, where his father went, his mother was a cheerleader and his grandfather still lives (in State College). Devlin's high school quarterbacks coach was a two-year starter for Virginia.

``Since Werner got fired, Virginia quarterbacks coach Mike Groh has been by a couple of times, and so has a bunch of guys from Penn State.''

Matta said he met briefly with Devlin, new UM quarterbacks coach Todd Berry and tight ends coach Mario Cristobal on Tuesday at the high school, and Devlin seemed to like both a lot. But Devlin did not come to school Wednesday, and Matta said he and his quarterback haven't talked since the meeting.

Last year, UM lost top recruit Derek Shaw, another quarterback, when he changed his mind in mid-January. Shaw also had been solely committed to UM before he decided to switch to Arizona State.

Devlin would be a huge coup for PSU.  The only QB they got so far this season is a mediocre talent from Jersey (Brackett).  With Morelli only having two years of eligibility left and with Galen Hall's spread offense, the Nits really need a blue-chipper at QB to continue being competitive.  Devlin would really fit that bill.

AJ Wallace was upgraded to 5 stars on Rivals  :yay

Pat Bostick a kid from around here (Lancaster County) who is a junior this year, got invited to the Army A.A. game to practice with the seniors, as many of the top juniors in the country do.  He was said to be the second best quarterback there behind the youngest Clausen (but in front of Tebow, Mustain, Sneed etc.).  PSU has been recruiting him since last year and supposedly has a good shot.  I have seen this kid play against my former high school and he is is the real deal.   :yay

Also, lesser-known Abe Koroma (DT from Milton Hershey) was upgraded from 2 to 3.  Leaving Doug Klopacz as PSU's only 2-star recruit as of now.  He looks like a winner, too:

Wallace's upgrade officially pushes PSU into the top ten recruiting classes.  Sweet.  GET LOGAN-EL!

When's ALE announcing again?

BigEd76

Haven't heard yet.

Also on the Rivals star system, McCoy was dropped to 4 stars...

Speaking of Koroma, I'm not sure if you saw it on EMB, but bkoroma is his cousin...

last i heard ale is set to announce on the 24th around 450 at the espn zone in baltimore....which is another bad sign for ups...every player that has announced for md has done it from the espn zone in balt...if they have announced for another school its always been at the wash dc zone....at this point id be shocked if he didnt announce for md

Ah, didn't know.  My sister and brother-in-law actually know Abe, too.  They're PSU alums but worried about all the good DL recruits, because they want Abe to have a chance to play.

Getting Close to Crunch Time

By Josh Barr
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, January 20, 2006; 12:39 AM

Evan Royster was more than polite as he excused himself for a brief moment. At a time when most top high school athletes are focused solely on bettering themselves in the athletic arena, The Post's All-Met Offensive Player of the Year had to take time out from a phone interview to answer the other line at Centreville Tire and Auto.

In a few seconds, though, the Westfield High running back was back on the line to talk about the announcement that he had finally chosen a scholarship offer from Penn State.

"I just felt something at Penn State I didn't feel at other places," Royster said.

As the Feb. 1 beginning of the signing period nears, more and more players are making their college choices. Some do it because it is getting close to crunch time, when perhaps a scholarship will no longer be available because other players accept offers sooner. Some make the choice now for quirky reasons. Churchill defensive back Matt Leemhuis, a second-team All-Met, might fit into both of these categories; he said he chose Virginia this past Monday because it was his 19th birthday.

Then there are instances such as Royster, who previously had taken official visits to Nebraska and Oklahoma. Those trips "weren't real different" from his visit to State College this past weekend, Royster said, but once he arrived on campus it took him little time to figure out where he belonged.

The deal was sealed this past Tuesday, when Coach Joe Paterno and assistant Larry Johnson traveled to Virginia and met with Royster and the running back's family.

"They did a very impressive job presenting the school to us and the program," said Royster's mother, Dawna. "We loved it. It's the perfect fit for Evan. It's one of those things, after our visit, everything fell into place and it was the right thing to do."

Royster became the sixth Washington-area player to accept a scholarship from Penn State.

Previously, three All-Mets had accepted scholarships: Lackey lineman J.B. Walton, Quince Orchard linebacker Bani Gbadyu and McDonough defensive back A.J. Wallace. Mount Hebron lineman Aaron Maybin also committed to the Nittany Lions. Suitland linebacker Navorro Bowman, an All-Met in 2004 who was hampered by a shoulder injury this past season, graduated from high school after the first semester and enrolled at Penn State for the spring semester.

That group could get more additions soon with two more All-Mets.

Gwynn Park lineman Phillip Taylor and Forestville lineman Antonio Logan-El are expected to make their choices publicly known by the end of the month. Both are also considering Maryland. Logan-El committed to Maryland before his junior year before later opening the process, while word among local high school coaches is that Taylor already has committed to Penn State but is holding off on an announcement.

chances are it was slutty sorority girls walking to the bars in short skirts and heels with no jacket in the middle of winter.

Supposedly Devlin is on campus today, with a tour hosted by Morelli...

These kids are TEN years younger than me. Ridiculous.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

rjs246

You're 19? Dear god. I was working under the assumption that you were 12.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?
