i said the panthers 2 years ago and look what happened.  the vikings and seahawks screwed me though.

im still waiting on the texans to emerge.  david carr just needs one more weapon.



the vikes are now my busts.  no running game, new wrs, and a zesty batch of lbs.

really people, the cardinals...winning the conference?? over seattle or the rams? 

seattle cant get over the hump.  their front 7 is shaky and the wrs took a blow.  hassleback lacks arm strength on deep plays.

the rams could be on to something special but i dont see them putting it all together just yet.

I'm with Mussa. The Cardinals still suck more then the Rams and Seahawks. Kurt Warner? That ship has sailed, and the weak O-Line in Arizona is going to get him injured....  Plus Green knows that the Cardinals need to continue to compete for high draft picks at this phase...

I revised my NFC West picks. I gotta have the Rams win the division because they are good at home. I decided the Cards aren't quite ready yet. I think the deciding factor was finding out for sure Jackson would be the starting RB for the Rams. If Faulk was the starter he is just too old and slow. I think Jackson would spark them some.

2005 NFL PREDICTIONS

AFC EAST
1. New York Jets
2. New England Patriots
3. Buffalo Bills
4. Miami Dolphins

Summary: I like the Jets this year because of their new OC Heimerdinger. He favors a wide open attack which is better for this team than Hackett's system was. I am also a Herm Edwards fan and I like to see him succeed. I think the Pats will suffer a little bit from the losses of both Weis and Crennell. They'll finish a game behind the Jets. I also like what the Bills are doing. I am not sold on Losman, but I think that their running game, defense and special teams are enough to get them a wild-card spot. The Dolphins are making strides in turning around the mess that Spielman and Wannstedt made. But with a new coach, uncertainty at the QB position and poor OL depth and play they will not sniff the top 3 of the AFC East.

AFC NORTH

Summary: This has the potential to be a bad division. And I mean bad as in not good, not bad as in awesome. The Pittsburgh offense is not very good right now. They've lost Duce for at least a month, Bettis is hurt, Roethlisberger is struggling, Burress is gone and they didn't score a TD with the first string in the PS. I think they'll win it just because the others don't have enough to take it from them. I think Cincy will be close and even though they took a beating from the Eagles, I still think Palmer is set for a big year with Rudi Johnson, Chad Johnson and Houshmanzadeh. I am openly rooting for Baltimore to suck. Boller is terrible, Jamal Lewis is not happy about his contract, he's not exactly healthy and he hasn't had a lot of reps in the PS. Their defense will be good but not good enough to overcome The Offensive Genius' pitiful offense. Cleveland is going to go through growing pains, but I like the Crennell/Savage combo.

AFC SOUTH
1. Indianapolis Colts

Summary: The Colts will win this with ease. I'm not sold on their defense just yet even though they got Simon. I love Freeney and Mathis as pass rushers though. They'd better win it this year or I think Tony Dungy is in hot water and maybe even looking for a job. I like Jacksonville's defense except for the fact that they need another solid CB in their secondary. I like the fact that Del Rio brought in Carl Smith as the OC. That will help Leftwich's development. Byron is a QB who needs a wide open offense, not the rubbish that Bill Musgrave was using last year. Houston is a team that needs a kick in the butt and that kick might not come until Dom Capers is fired. He's a good starter coach but he is not a finisher. He will be fired after another underachieving year because Bob McNair is ready to win now. David Carr needs a big season but he might not get it with that OL of his. Tennessee is seeing what happens when you're in salary cap hell. I do like Steve McNair to have a rebound season this year.

AFC WEST

Summary: The Chargers will show that they are for real this year and not just a fluke. I like their defense and whenever Merriman gets his head on right, he'll be a terror. Brees, Tomlinson and Gates are a nice trio. I like McCardell and Parker as their WRs. Not spectacular but good enough. Kansas City did a major overhaul on defense. Will it be enough? I doubt it. But they'll be good enough to finish second. Will Holmes stay healthy? Will Green's leg be OK? Will their OL show signs of age? All important questions. The Raiders offense will score a lot of points. Problem is; their defense will give up a lot of points. Denver is not a good team. Shanahan has driven them into the ground. Their defense is not very good, Plummer is not a good QB and I just don't see them doing anything this year.

Summary: Once again the Eagles are the cream of the crop in this division. The Cowboys have improved but they still have the immobile Bledsoe playing behind a shaky OL. I love Julius Jones and Jason Witten, but they do not have enough to overtake Philadelphia. The Giants season hinges on Eli Manning. Tiki Barber will get his yards as he always does but will Eli step it up? Will their OL keep him upright? Will their defense be better? If those answers are "yes", then they have at shot at 2nd place. The taterskins will continue to suck the fumes of the other teams in this division. I still think Gibbs is overmatched and Ramsey is not a confident QB right now because of the drafting of Campbell and Brunell playing well. Their defense will keep them in games as Gregg Williams' unit is one of the better ones in the NFL.

NFC NORTH
1. Minnesota Vikings
2. Green Bay Packers
3. Detroit Lions
4. Chicago Bears

Summary: The Nate Burleson era begins in Minnesota. Will he be able to handle being a #1 WR or will he flop in that role like Peerless Price did? Will Culpepper be able to find receivers open without the benefit of Moss drawing double and triple teams? We'll see. But they'll score enough to win the division. Their revamped defense will get a lot of attention too. The Packers are done. I do not like their defense at all. I do not like the fact that they are starting Adrien Klemm and Will Whittacker at OG either. If Joey Harrington can finally step up Detroit could push Green Bay for that 2nd place spot. This is the year that Harring must get it done. No more excuses for Joey. He has the weapons to win. Chicago could've made a little more noise if they had Grossman starting. But with Orton being the QB their OL better be ready to protect him.

NFC SOUTH
1. Carolina Pathers
2. Atlanta Falcons
3. New Orleans Saints
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Summary: Carolina will rebound this year since they are healthy. Their coaching staff showed how good they were when they finished so strong after the 1-7 start last year. I like the Wahle signing for them. Their biggest questions on offense are whether Travelle Wharton can play LT and if the RBs can stay healthy. Shelton is on IR so Foster and Davis better be healthy. I like the Smith-Colbert-Gardner trio at WR too. Their defense will be one of the top squads again. The Falcons think they are the NFC's top team. Wrong. Until Mike Vick can play QB they will not win anything. I wonder if NO's home field situation will take a toll on them? Even if it does they'll still finish 3rd because Tampa is really that bad. Want to see how to run a franchise into the ground? Look at Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen. The Bucs stink.

NFC WEST

Summary: This is the year of the Cardinal in the West. Sure they'll win it because the other teams stink, but they will be a good football team in the second year of Denny Green's tenure. It all hinges on Kurt Warner though. I think JJ Arrington will have a nice rookie season and possibly win the offensive rookie of the year. The Seahawks still cannot catch the football at the WR position. Their defense wil be so-so but I do not think Matt Hasselbeck and Shaun Alexander are enough for them to beat out the Cards. The Rams defense is terrible. Their secondary could give up a record number of TDs this year. Stephen Jackson is good. Torry Holt is great. What else is there? San Francisco shoud've drafted Braylon Edwards because they'll be in position to draft Matt Leinart this year.

Anyway I've been bumping this thread, but I've forgot to edit some of my picks. I'll write up a few summaries like Phreak did to organize it a little better.

I agree with Phreak about the Broncos finishing last in the AFC West though. That Portis trade was a HUGE mistake considering they did it to upgrade at DB to face the Colts. They got blown out by the Colts yet again. I know they have success with RBs, but Portis is actually good unlike average backs they make good, Portis goes from very good to great in their offense. That was a huge mistake, and they won't be able to plug in RBs forever. They can make backs like Anderson and Bell successful in the offense, but they don't have the ability Portis had. He was amazing in that offense.

AFC East
1. Patriots- Don't see why not. They sorta win all the time.
2. Jets- Pennington still doesn't do it for me, and theres always the lingering fact that Curtis Martin is 180 years old. Good enough for the 5th seed.
3. Bills- Could push to be a playoff team, but they have a pretty brutal schedule. Maybe next year, as long as Losman doesn't act like Bledsoe.
4. Dolphins- I think Saban will get this team turned around, they just need a QB first. Perhaps Matt Leinert will do.

AFC North
1. Ravens- It kills me to do this, but I think they'll edge out the Bengals by either the tiebreaker or a game. Boller still sucks, though.
2. Bengals- My boys. They will ride Palmer, Johnson and Johnson to the playoffs. The defense will do just enough. Luckily, they don't face the Eagles.
3. Steelers- Defense can only do so much. Roethlisberger is going to get exposed for what he is: mediocre. The injuries at running back don't help.
4. Browns- No running game, no quarterback and a zesty defense. I think Crennel can do it, it just may take a long time. Davis really messed up.

AFC South
1. Colts- Easy pick here. Offense tends to score lots of touchdowns, that kinda helps you win games. HowEVA, me thinks they still can't beat NE.
2. Jaguars- Like last year, they will find cheap ways to win games. No one will care in Jacksonville, and they'll barely miss the playoffs.
3. Texans- Capers will get the can. They just aren't good to make the playoffs. Maybe a head coach can come in and actually construct an o-line.
4. Titans- Their defense is awful, McNair is bound for IR and they can't replace Derrick Mason. They need to hire Banner as their capologist.

AFC West
1. Chargers- No let down here. Can ride Tomlinson and Gates, plus having the trio of Caldwell/McCardell/Parker for a full year can't hurt.
2. Raiders- Will simply outscore enough teams to put up a pretty decent record, but it won't be enough to sneak into the playoffs.
3. Chiefs- I love The Crybaby, but the defense is still bad. I think they would be Superbowl bound if they didn't cut Freddie Mitchell.
4. Broncos- This is it for Shanahan and Plummer. They can't survive shootouts with KC and Oakland, and simply aren't good enough to beat SD.

4. Giants- Yea, they blow.

1. Vikings- Win division by default. Like always, they will jump out to a 7-1 record and then choke away any shot at homefield.
2. Lions- I'm bankin' on Harrington to do enough to get this team to .500. Porbably not happening, but Jones has to count for something.
3. Packers- Everything totally unravels this year for Madden's favorite team. Especially King Favre. He's finished.
4. Bears- I think this is the 25th year in a row that the Bears have a crappy quarterback. They stink.

NFC South
1. Panthers- They're back, but they're still not better than the Eagles. Peppers is sick and Foster can be if he stays healthy.
2. Falcons- Vick will get his share of handjobs and rubdowns for running all over the Lions, but they can't beat the good teams. Wild Card it is.
3. Saints- Will rally around what happened in NO and even win a few games. But come November, the real Saints will show. Too bad.
4. Bucs- I think Williams will do big things this year, but it won't nearly be enough to save this train wreck. Hey, Hey Tampa Bay, the Bucs suck.

NFC West
1. Seahawks- Not much to be proud of winning this division. Hell, maybe the recievers learned how to catch the football during the offseason.
2. Cardinals- One word: Playoffs. They are going, baby. Even with Kurt Warner. J.J. Arrington is going to rush for 1,000 yards.
3. Rams- Finally, Mike Martz will run out of excuses. When the Arizona Cardinals finish ahead of you, theres really not much you can say.
4. 49ers- Worst team in the league. Erickson left them in awful shape. They'll be lucky to win one game this year.

Busts--Carolina, Ravens, Lions--I don't think Carolina will be as good as advertised, the Ravens will be done in by a lack of a passing game, and the Lions will be done in by a lack of coaching and QB play.

Coaching casualties--

Mariucci---Steve's had three years and he's chosen all of this talent with the exception of Harrington.

Billick---In a surprise move, Billick gets canned by the Ravens' owners because of his stubborness connected to Boller.

Martz---His coaching is bizarre and Frontiere gets rid of him.

Fisher---the good guy gets canned in Tennessee, taking the fall for management's mistakes.

Parcells---even though the Boys make the playoffs, they suffer a second playoff blowout under Parcells and Jones, who butts heads with the coach over Drew Henson cans the Tuna.

Gibbs--the saviour is no more.

Vermeil--resigns after a bad season.

Haslett--the incosistency is mind boggling. Benson finally gets rid of him.


If you can't beat'em, hire'em---The Cowboys come calling and offer Brad Childress a 5 year deal to become head coach of the Boys and he accepts.

From the "It's so UNLIKELY TO HAPPEN, IT JUST MIGHT" file---William Clay Ford, owner of the Lions gets sick of having losing season after losing season. He fires Mariucci and Matt Millen, and offers the Eagles 3 1st round picks for the right to hire Reid and make him President/GM/Head Coach. Even though Reid has only won just one Super Bowl, he has 4 appearances as an asst coach and Head Coach; he also boasts an 88-39 record (10-5) in the playoffs, 5 consecutive NFCCG appearances, and an NFL record 4 straight NFCCGs at home.

Lurie at first objects, but realizes that having 2 1st round picks will help rebuild what is already a young team immensely. He promotes Banner to CEO, himself having a non-advisory role, and promotes Tom Heckert to President/GM. Heckert then hires Jeff Fisher, the best young coach available in the league. Fisher's first task is to make Jim Johnson asst head coach and keep him on until his contract expires.

1.  NY Jets- I agree with Phreak, it's time for Herm Edwards' squad to step up.  All depends on how healthy Pennington's arm is.
2.  New England- Lost just enough to take a step backwards this season.
3.  Buffalo- Could be the best 3rd place team in the NFL.  Look out when Losman gets a year under his belt.
4.  Miami- Ferrotte as the starting QB?  That says it all.  Poor offense, aging defense spells doom.  At least there's South Beach.

AFC North
1.  Baltimore- Not quite a repeat of their Super Bowl run, but much the same makeup:  great defense, mediocre offense except Jamal Lewis.
2.  Pittsburgh- Bettis and Staley come back to make a run, but not quite enough to overtake Ravens.  Roethlisberger mediocre as sophomore.
3.  Cincinnati- Marvin Lewis makes unprecedented third straight run at mediocrity in Cincinnati.  Hailed as genius in Bengals country.
4.  Browns- Good RB, awful just about everywhere else.  Four wins would be a success in Cleveland.

AFC South
1.  Indianapolis- The cream of the AFC, as long as they play in a dome.  Should get HFA this season, which is trouble for the rest.
2.  Jacksonville- Not sure Leftwich is going to be an elite QB, but he should be good enough to get a WC at 9-7.
3.  Houston- Will be in most every game, but will not win enough to save Capers' job.
4.  Tennessee- Cap hell leads to NFL hell for the Music City Titans.

AFC West
1.  Kansas City- Improved defense could be enough to win a mediocre division.
2.  Chargers- Still good, but take a step back.
3.  Oakland- Are there enough balls to go around that ego-driven offense?
4.  Broncos- Will Shanahan finally lose his job?  Or will the two rusting Super Bowl trophies still give him a pass?

1.  Carolina- Should be good enough to win this division with the return of their many injuries, but will Foster and Davis be healthy all year?
2.  Atlanta- Will Mike Vick make the transition from being a good athlete to being a good QB?  That will be the key this season.
3.  Tampa Bay- Only the Hurricane-ravaged Saints keeps the Bucs from returning to last place, from whence they came.
4.  New Orleans- Will the tragedy of the hurricane give Haslett a reprieve yet again from being fired?

NFC West
1.  St. Louis- Stephen Jackson is looking to become a stud RB this season.  Will the offense return to past glory?
2.  Arizona- If Warner can play even remotely close to the level of his best years, the Cardinals could break through and win the division.
3.  Seattle- Can any WR catch the ball?  If not, more misery in the Pacific Northwest.
4.  San Francisco- Think Alex Smith wishes he had stayed in college?  Think Tim Rattay wets his bed a night thinking about what's coming for him?
