Quotetaterskins to Get Patten, Lose Pierce

By Nunyo Demasio
Washington Post Staff Writer

Wide receiver David Patten, a free agent from the New England Patriots, agreed to terms with the Washington taterskins this afternoon at taterskins Park, a club source said, and a press conference has been scheduled for tomorrow.

Details of the Patten deal were not disclosed. But the addition of the New England Patriots' wide receiver comes on the day the taterskins refused to match an offer from Antonio Pierce -- the leading tackler on Washington's third-ranked defense -- and lost him to the New York Giants.

Pierce, who did not return telephone messages requesting comment, kept his promise to allow the taterskins to match the highest offer he received as a free agent, but New York's offer of a six-year, $26-million deal, which included a $6.5 million bonus, was out of Washington's price range, according to Coach Joe Gibbs.

"I simply think that at the end . . . it become a situation where we would have kind of thrown our salary structure out. . . . ," Gibbs said at a press conference to announce the signing of center Casey Rabach, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens. "I also think it would have affected us in what we want to do as far as adding other players.

"It's one of those things that you don't want to have happen. I said Antonio played great for us last year. [We would have] loved to get that done. But I think it's one of those things that we went as far as we could go, we felt like. And it's something that just didn't work out. I hate it. I think it's not going to happen very often to us, but I think there's sometimes it could happen."

Pierce is expected to sign with New York today at Giants Stadium. While Gibbs conceded the significance of losing Pierce, he said that the club will pursue all replacement options, including the late April draft.

Middle linebacker Mike Barrow had appeared likely to be released because of a left-knee injury that prevented him from playing last season. Now Barrow, whose injury gave Pierce an opportunity to start, will be strongly considered as his replacement.

At 5-foot-10, 190 pounds, Patten played the last four seasons with the Patriots, who have won three Super Bowls over that span. Despite his size, Patten is an explosive, big-play threat. Last season, Patten had 44 catches for 800 yards for an 18.2-yard average, plus a career-high seven touchdowns. Patten's best season came in 2002, when he had 61 catches for 824 yards. He led the Patriots that season with five touchdowns. Patten, an eighth-year veteran, has also played for the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns.

With Rod Gardner on the trading block and expected to bring a mid- to low-round pick, Washington's No. 2 wideout spot is open. Reserve wideouts James Thrash and Taylor Jacobs are likely to have increased roles next season and will compete to be the no. 2 wideout.

Skins talking about salary structure? :-D

I love this:

Skins will likely lose Gardner and Coles and replace them with David Patten/James Thrash/Darnerian McCants and Taylor Jcobs.

They lost Pierce and replace him with Broke Ass Barrow.

They're going to lose Smoot too.

I actually think the Patten signing will be good for them and this seems to be at least an OK crop of receivers in the draft.  Losing Pierce will probably be the biggest blow.  He was the difference maker on a very good defense last season.

That suprises me a bit I would have thought they would spend their money elsewhere and drafted an RB to groom behind Martin.

I just don't get it. They were barely under after Collins and Gannon restructured and they made those cuts.....and then they took on Moss' $7.5 mil. How in the hell are they doing this?

They:
Cut Wheatley, Parrella, Williams, Buchanan, Middleton
Traded Harris
Restructured Sims, Lechler, Gannon, Collins, Moss

And probably some I'm missing...

And they just cut DeLawrence Grant (LB) and Ron Stone (OG)

They got a pretty good deal for Blaylock, though, and Martin isn't getting any younger.  Put it this way:  Is Blaylock really worth $16m less than LaMont Jordan?

Also, I would not be at all surprised for the Eagles to trade for Gardner.  They were jizzing over him in the 2001 draft.
