Disagree. Their job first and foremost is to represent their branch of service. By calling out the commander in chief is damaging to their troops. They're not random politicians. They have to worry about the readiness of thousands of trained personnel who defend the country.

The Joint Chiefs made the statements because they need/want to be seen publicly denouncing racism/white supremacy/nazis within the ranks. Any time a bad thing happens, you'll likely see tweets from senior military leadership about it. This is PR 101, folks.

Each JC probably also sent out a lengthy memo to his/her branch that commanding officers will be required to pass down to their troops about a zero tolerance within the ranks regarding racism. The senior enlisted man/woman of each branch has likely done the same. This Friday around 4:30pm, leaders will likely reiterate this message during the leave/ liberty safety brief before securing for the weekend.

Military heads should keep their mouths shut about the President, especially so the higher the rank.  If you allow Generals to bad mouth their boss, why should the private respect his Sargeant?   Disorder in the military is weakness in the military. 

While the part of me that relishes political sniping against Our Dear Leader would be thrilled to see Generals bad mouthing him, the grown up part of me would be alarmed by it.  That's for third world countries, banana republics, and losing armies. 

There's a great passage in the early part of Orwell's Homage to Catalonia describing the military training drills conducted by the socialists fighting against Franco.  Recruits refusing orders, arguing with drill instructors over this and that, because everyone was a brother and there was no hierarchy.  It's a hilarious scene, but also deadly serious.  Those troops took a thrashing in part because, though their cause was good (or at least, better than Franco's), their organization was shtein.  They were weak on the battlefield because they were not disciplined.  The did not fall in line and carry out orders. 

We need our military to be strong, and politically agnostic.  Dissension is cancer.
