Good player but not a HOFer in my opinion. 2001-2007 is enough? Because that's when he was good

Hoops HOF accounts for pretty much everything except rec league hoops at the Y.  So his high school career, which was elite af (and college had he gone) also gets factored in.  But even just looking at his NBA career, I'd put him in but it wouldn't be until 2nd, most likely 3rd ballot.

And that's just the way I look at HOF as it pertains to all sports.  It's not strictly for the absolutely most elite players in the game (should it be?  that can be argued and debated) but it's for players who are all time greats and also the greatest of their eras, even if that doesn't necessarily put them in the all time category.  I know it doesn't work this way, but I feel like the ballot a player gets in on should accurately reflect that player's overall position on the historical ladder.

1st ballot - All time greatest of the great.  Jordan, Magic, Wilt, Russell, Bird, Bron,  etc, etc.

2nd ballot - Elite in your era, legitimately all-time great player, but not quite on the same level as the actual all-time greats.  Ain't no shame in being in this group.  AI, Wade, Dirk, Reggie, etc, etc.  Paper thing gap between 1st ballot worthy and 2nd ballot that gives people plenty to argue about until the end of time.

3rd ballot - Elite/near elite player in your era and at this point in time, probably hovering around the top 100-125 players all-time.  This is probably where I think someone like McGrady fits in.

Same concept trickles down to 4th, 5th, ballots...etc, etc, etc.  Not even sure how many tries each HOF allows for.  I feel like if you don't get in any HOF after 4 or 5 tries though, you probably shouldn't be in at all.

Also, the NBA should probably have it's own HOF.  Naismith HOF is nice and can be a global HOF that includes NBA players, but the NBA really should have it's own.

my contention would be that mcgrady wasnt an elite player...he was an elite scorer....but i definitely rate defense higher than most people

also j is right....his window was too small for hof

I think that because his defense wasn't at the same level as his offense, a lot of people conclude that made him a bad/lazy defender.  I think his defense was average at worst, probably a bit above average.  It definitely wasn't on his priority list and he most certainly put most of his efforts into his scoring, but wasn't a turnstile either. (insert 45 second youtube clip of poor defensive plays during his 30,000+ NBA minutes played)

AI wasn't an elite defender either nor was he always the best teammate (not that I put much stock in that as it pertains to the HOF).  Most of his success on defense came during the Larry Brown era when he had other defensive minded guards like Eric Snow who would often take the other team's 2 on defense which allowed AI to play passing lanes and rack up a bunch of steals.

Obviously I'm not making a direct AI to McGrady comparison.  AI was special as farg and was a midget schooling the farg out of giants.  But he carried that same baggage as McGrady.

As for his window...that's the most legit argument against him, imo.  Average NBA career is about 5 years.  Granted, most wash out due to lack of talent rather than injury/body breakdown like in the NFL, but his "elite" window of 7-8 years was still longer than the average career.

I think it's pretty laughable that he got in 1st ballot but don't have a problem with him being in there.  Bigger crimes against humanity have been committed.

you don't have to wonder or think he was an ok defender...I had league pass for his whole career and trust me he was bad

Rome

He was the greatest defender ever.  Trust me, I watched him play on tv a few times.

Rome

I saw TMac a lot and he was fun to watch on offense but he was absolutely a lazy bitch on defense and he only had seven legitimately great years in the league.  First ballot HOF for him is a travesty.

QB Eagles

A win against the Kings on Friday night would be amazing.

ice grillin you

at this point the lakers are pretty much locked into third....they are 1.5 behind phx with four to play and phx is in hinkie magic type tank mode having lost 13 in a row

the kings on the other hand can only pass one team (the knicks) but they have a chance to drop below two teams which would really hurt

i think he wins but i think its a lot closer than most people think

id vote kawahi but the fact that four different people could win and theyd all be the correct choice is pretty amazing
