homers are great but his cement feet and 280 obp are worse
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

I'm not saying he's a future star but he has the potential to be a yearly 25 HR 80 RBI type of guy which isn't bad production.

I was at the Vet in left field the night Wes Chamberlain hit one into the 500 level above us.  Joseph's bomb looked similar.

Dude's got insane power.

Was it against the Pirates? Probably the funniest thing I ever saw in a baseball game was when Chamberlain hit a monster shot to left field. Bonds was playing left and never moved. Like his hands were on his knees, the ball was hit, and he didn't even flinch.

I thought they were playing the Cubs but it could have been the Mets.  Our usual seats were in dead center field, front row, so us being in left field was unusual.  I just remember the crack of the bat and the ball screaming out.  I expected it to drop down but it never did.  Incredible.  I'd been to dozens if not hundreds of games before that and never saw one go up there in person.

hes only going to knock in 80 runs if hes hitting 3-5 and if hes doing that the phillies aint gonna win shtein

the phillies have to do better at 1b than joseph...if hoskis isnt the guy then they can buy someone in 18

But homers and RBI don't meant shtein to our resident saber geek. So basically he sucks.

homers are great but rbis are reflective of opportunity and other people getting on base....a good offense should see the middle of the order guys over 100, generally. joseph isnt talented enough to hit in the middle of the order on a title contender. 1b is an important offensive position.

i dont see how joseph has a role here. he seems like a quad A player that will play a lot on bad teams

He's fine as a 5 hole hitter, they're basically Werth type numbers and nobody bitched about him in the 5 hole. 2 years from now who knows maybe he is the next Ruff and someone better comes along...I like the guys swing and think he has a future in the league.

It was the Pirates.  Jesus Christ that was 25 years ago.

Nice find

I remember this like it was yesterday
QuoteThe body language of left fielder Barry Bonds on the two-run blow spoke encyclopedias. Bonds kept his hands on his knees as he casually pivoted his head backward to track the missile launch on a John Smiley fastball.

werth had an obp 100 points higher, stole bases and offered terrific defense. hes basically a ruf clone except probably shteintier.

he definitely has power and will hang around mlb because of that, but 1b is an essential offensive position and you need more production coming out of there. i think the phils sign/trade someone in 2018 unless hoskins has an amazing 2017.

John Smiley is from Phoenixville

I don't what's worse....thinking Joseph is a future starter on a good Phillies team or thinking actual runs batted in don't matter

Joseph's stats:  .264 AVG .289 OBP .546 SLG .835 OPS (7 2B / 0 3B / 13 HR / 173 AB)
Werth's stats age 25:  .262 AVG .338 OBP .486 SLG .825 OPS (11 2B / 3 3B / 16 HR / 290 AB)
Werth's stats age 26:  .234 AVG .338 OBP .374 SLG .711 OPS (22 2B / 2 3B / 7 HR / 337 AB)

Can't argue the speed or defense.  But Joseph's at or better than Werth power-wise at the same age, and right how his slugging is higher than Werth's career highs (.532 in 2010 and 2013).  His primary deficiency as a hitter is an inability to take a walk (7 BB / 43 K).

I won't claim that Joseph is part of the long-term plans at all.

ice grillin you

baseball is the one sport where its not really fair to pull up an individual year like that....sample size is just way too small...

see HOF's age 25 stats...or you could pull up werths age 26 year and say joseph is going to be way better than werth

TJ could chill in the league for 10 years or he could be out of the league in two...I just don't see him in any scenario being a starting first baseman on a good team

i never said rbis dont matter, just that theyre a team stat related to opportunity and other people's ability to get on base. but yes you cannot solely look at someone's rbi production and then evaluate that player.

i was referencing the phillies version of werth, im guessing thats what sd was talking about, too. and to be fair, those 2 seasons with the dodgers he had about 700 PA, which is the around the number for an everyday player in 1 season. so he was always hurt and/or a bench player.

but yes its all moot because tommy joseph is likely going to be the 1b for the rebuilding rays or cardinals in 2018, not the world series contender phillies.
