That first draft pick has what, like a 50% chance to be a good player on the team that drafted him when he finally comes up to the bigs four years from now, assuming he's not a high school kid who decides to go to college or declines to sign, in a team sport in which one player makes a marginal difference even if he's a Hall of Fame player. If the Phillies slip down to the second or third picks, those odds might go down to.... 49%.

to a certain extent qb is right....baseball drafting is the ultimate crapshoot....but consider:

2014   Brady Aiken
2015   Dansby Swanson   

so since 07, theres really been 1 real misfire and beckham has had drug and injury problems his entire career. so you never know about that.

the phils dont have a 100% chance to find a great player with the 1, but they certainly have a better chance than if they had the 2

having the number one overall pick is a great thing...even if its only for psychological purposes

that argument makes no sense....in the past 3 years theyve drafted franco, nola and crawford. 15 years ago that dweeb ed wade drafted the core that won you the only title your booze riddled mind can remember.

now the phillies might (or will) get unlucky and draft the BPA who will turn out to be a drug addict flameout. but thats really because of bad luck more than anything.

They're in last place because the guys they drafted to replace Howard, Utley, Rollins, Chooch & the entire pitching staff never panned out.

From 1995-2004 they were probably the best in baseball at drafting.  After that and until very recently it's been a total disaster.

sure, but theres a difference between misfiring with an athlete at pick 27 and misfiring with a cant miss prospect at 1. if the phillies miss on their top pick in 16 it wont be because of them, it will be because the kid stinks.
