TE, Stanford
-
Thanks for ruining it fev
-
Stupid farging pick.
Dumb as hell.
Awful job, Howie.
PS - twitter is ruining it again tonight. People tipping picks
-
Spoiler alert...dick!
-
Ummm..... no.
-
If he's not the next Gronk, it's a dumb pick
-
had a 101 places to go with that pick and hundred of them would have been fine....they went the one that wasnt fine
-
I like Ertz though it speaks to the chip only likes O fear. D is going to be baaaad.
-
Knew they weren't going d so this doesn't shock me. They went heavy on d last draft and in free agency. Chips an offensive guy. I don't mind the pick.
-
"The best Defense is a incredible offensive which we haven't seen or has been tested in the NFL" said no one?
-
I imagine Brent Celek watching the draft at another player's house, having the rome/igy style party and as soon as they announced the pick he immediately starts to projectile vomit over everyone and then begins to sob like a 6-year old girl.
-
i am so baffled....why the farg would you sign casey and draft a te in the second round in the same offseason...it would be dumb if you didnt have celek...you throw him in the mix and its just beyond unnecessary
-
Who's Casey?
-
Knew they weren't going d so this doesn't shock me. They went heavy on d last draft and in free agency. Chips an offensive guy. I don't mind the pick.
they have no less than six big need spots on defense...and all of them are way more important than getting a third TE
jim hill reppin the 1970's
-
I believe he's talking about Bawb Casey, Pennsylvania senator.
-
Ertz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_u5_y3oVj30)
He caught the tying TD that sent the game to OT and killed Chip's perfect season
-
If he's not the next Gronk, it's a dumb pick
Unless Philly fans catch up to him and break his arm for getting picked, he's not the next Gronk.
Like the player ok but not the pick

RobMaaddi
Chip Kelly on Zach Ertz: "He's a mismatch nightmare." #Eagles #NFLDraft
-
The question everyone is asking is, "Does he bang porn actresses....eh...or actors?"
-
I like the player. The pick is stupid, though. Not when they had other players out there who could have been game-changers.
Whatever, though. I can't stand Celek anyway, so... go Ertz.
-
RobMaaddi
Chip Kelly on Zach Ertz: "He's a mismatch nightmare." #Eagles #NFLDraft
so is your defense chip

RobMaaddi
Chip Kelly on Zach Ertz: "He's a mismatch nightmare." #Eagles #NFLDraft
yeah he's a mismatch for what the team needed and it's a nightmare
-
the pick is good if clay harbor is your starting TE
-
So who watches a lot of college ball - how is he in the RZ? To me that is at least as big a question as his route running ability.
-
Clay Harbor, we hardly knew you.
-
Clay Harbor, we hardly knew you.
Exactly.
-
What baffles me is that usually switching from 4-3 to a 3-4 is a 2 year commitment, and that is not even taking into account needing to overhaul the entire secondary. Which season will this start?
-
Maybe we can get igy to come around on this pick if Ertz has a dent in his chest?
-

I don't think it'll help.
-

I don't know what this means, but it sounds hilarious.

They're loading up with players for the future and tanking 2013 for Johnny Football. They weren't gonna be good this year no matter what they did, anyway.

We'll know you're on to something when they trade their third round pick for Sanchez.
-
Is he from the area? Saw Roob tweet his Pops went to Lehigh.
Btw - the goofball "dude bro" white boy clique gets another. Foles, Kelce, Mathis, Manneans, Celek, Watkins, Dorenbos, Barwin, Casey.

How do you not remember Dent Chest HOF Ingram?
-
So who watches a lot of college ball - how is he in the RZ? To me that is at least as big a question as his route running ability.
i saw a lot of him in college....he was good in the red zone....bodied people for the ball real well...i think he will be an ok player...but he wont be significantly better than celek if at all and i dont think hes as good as casey for this offense
at least they definitely upgraded the 3rd TE spot....that was def one of the biggest offseason needs
-
They'll probably keep less WR's now. I'm sure all the 3 TE's are going to get a lot of run. Better than running Riley Cooper out there
-

DING DING DING
furthermore where is the pass rush on this team coming from....they were historically pathetic last year...tank carradine would have been a massive upgrade in this area....two of the next three picks need to address the edges of their defense...for christ sake trent cole and brandon graham are their 3-4 olb's
-
I guess you're furiouser now.
-
I guess you're furiouser now.
I hope they go RB next so we can see him at his furyest.

I was seriously thinking of this and Manziel aside it actually isn't a bad idea. Getting all his pieces in place as best he can and not making the most competitive team for 2013 the priority isn't a bad plan. I just worry that isn't his thinking and he's just totally offensively minded.
-

Glad to hear he may be good in the RZ but I think he's been talking to Belichick too much. Chip's probably getting the idea looking at NE, NYG, GB etc you can have a SB challenger with a mediocre D. The only thing he's forgetting is that little detail about the franchise QB.
-
theres another guy i really wanted for the defense....love collins
this is so depressing right now
-
Chip's probably getting the idea looking at NE, NYG, GB etc you can have a SB challenger with a mediocre D. The only thing he's forgetting is that little detail about the franchise QB.
Two things, if you count the fact that the defense is terrible.
-
I can't understand how the Eagles haven't filled every need and upgraded every player on the roster thru a round and a half.
I mean, I thought they would have transformed the roster by now. So disappointing.
-

they hit a home run filling that back back up TE position
-
How anyone can't find a way to love you miserable bunch of fargs is beyond me. I love you guys.
-
Who's to say he's going to be the backup? Celek isn't exactly Tony Gonzalez, but even if he is the bookend in a two TE set, the Eagles didn't reach for anyone there. They picked the 34th rated player 35th. And they picked the guy who sat atop their board at the start of the day. Again, there are guys I would have preferred there, but whining over that is useless. They got a good prospect at a fairly important position, especially in Kelly's offense. They're not going to win much early anyway, so picking the best player available to me is a reasonable decision.
-
defense is more important...not some surfer brainiac TE
-
its useless to defend the pick....they took a good (not great) prospect with a low ceiling at TE which other than RB is probably the position of least need on the team
sounds like they did the right thing to me
-
defense is more important...not some surfer brainiac TE
Lol. Is there any basis to 'surfer brainiac' besides him being white?
-
It's useless to expect you to be anything but critical of everything they do. I wanted someone other than a TE there. All any of us can do from this second on is be hopeful this guy works out. That's something that you're incapable of doing and we all recognize that, IGY.
-
are there any white guys from orange who dont surf?
are there any dumb guys at stanford?
-

You mean besides the football players?

the problem is that even if he works out it doesnt make their team better...he just replaces another guy who worked out
-

No...I am being irrational because I hate the pick
-
Ertz passes the look test and can play. When I hear surfer I think of non-football players like Bloom. Ertz can play.
They just needed help other places way more.
-

The Eagles thought he was the best player on the board and they took him. That's not going to change, so you really need to get over it.
-
Buddy never would have picked this icehole.
-

I agree with all of this
Like NE's offense Kelly is going to use a lot of two TE sets. Celek is more of a big lumbering TE...Casey is more of a halfback/TE hybrid and who knows how Kelly is going to use him. Ertz fits his offensive scheme perfectly. They went heavy on D last draft and in free agency, Kelly needs to build the offense in his image. Right now it's a bunch of zesty Reid players.
-
Kelly is expected to feature the tight end significantly in his up-tempo offense. Many other teams around the NFL have utilized two tight end sets in recent seasons.
"If go three linebackers, we split them out, and we throw passes," Kelly said. "If they go three , we smash you. So pick your poison."
-
what does last year have to do with this year? they drafted like shtein. this is a whole new coaching staff...and why does 2 TE sets trump a much more important defense?
because they took a hybrid TE we are all supposed to be grateful they took the best ranked player? cmon--the eagles should be trying to build a team for the future of players they dont have not players they already have
-

celek is certainly not a lumbering TE...lumbering tight ends dont get 80 yard touchdowns...celek and ertz have the same 40 time....ertz is in the celek witten class as far as TE's....if you wanna go multi TE sets like NE then you should get athletes like aarron hernandez...theres a guy on florida whos gonna go later jordan reed who fits this model perfectly
-
Celek is lumbering for Chip's offense...40 times are great when you're just running straight ahead. Ertz is a much better athlete.
-
agree--you can tell just from the blip of video vs oregon that he already moves much better than celek, has a more fluid motion and comes out of his breaks nice...but still...
-
hes def a better athlete than celek...he may even be an upgrade one day as a TE....but if he ends up better than celek and thats def an if...it will be a negligible improvement
as stated over and over he has a chance to be a fine player but it was a terrible pick
-
Passing on all those defensive players for him really hErtz right now...
-
Buddy never would have picked this icehole.
:-D :-D :-D
-
So this guy turned out alright.
Who would have ever thunk it?
-
He's a top 10-15 TE. The contract they just gave him is absurd. He's now the 4th highest paid TE in the NFL.
TE's I'd take over Ertz:
Gronk
Olsen
Reed
Barnridge
Eifert
Kelce
Graham
Walker
Gates
And that's just off the top of my head
-
Will you be taking Gates' new knees and wheelchair with him?
-
Ertz will have 80-90 catches a season now that the retarded Chipscheme has been sent packing. Oh, and Bradford loves him so it could be worse to have his favorite target locked up.
-
80 catches 850 yards...and he can't block for shtein. He blew the first 3/4 of the last two seasons only to turn it on at the end. That's not the type of player you sign for $42 mill
-
meanwhile, in fletcher cox land
-
He's a top 10-15 TE. The contract they just gave him is absurd.
He got a two year deal with an $8 mil signing bonus. Even if you think those numbers are dumb, his cap hit is so stupidly low that they're still coming out ahead once they cut Cooper.
-
I can write $100M on the contract but the guarantee is the only thing that counts. It's 5 years and $20M. How is that absurd?
-
because one time ertz respected women and recycled
-
lol - ok, that was funny. i'll give you that one.
as for fletcher cox, he should change his first name to enormous to match the contract he's gonna get.
holy shtein.
-
I thought his blocking was vastly improved this last season, to the point where that alone was making Celek expendable.
I wouldn't put him in the top five tight ends in the league, but he might be in the top five tight ends it makes sense to give a 5 year extension to. Walker, Gates, Olsen, and Barnidge are all on the wrong side of 30.
-
And the TE position has become an either or in the last several years.
You're either a good receiver and a lousy blocker or a good blocker and lousy receiver.
-
contract is perfectly fair for a guy who hasn't been great but is getting better every year as he gets more snaps and could be great one day....my biggest problem with him is inside the red zone...seems to have trouble getting open when the field shrinks
really tho the te wont matter much until you get some wr's
-
Keep the good TE. Good idea.
-
Agree. Except
The Philadelphia Eagles have signed tight end Brent Celek to a three-year, $13 million extension through 2019 accoring to Adam Caplan
$6 mil guaranteed, reportedly.
I haven't been following closely. Was it just the HC duties Chip was fired from and he's still GM?
-
yeah....that's just stupid
-
Freed up a little cap space I guess, but they could have saved $5 million by cutting him instead.
-
The team says it replaces his old deal, so he's only signed through 2018
-
He's a good backup and that's not an awful deal
-
I think $4.5M/yr is too much for a 31 yr old blocking TE.
-
He's still a good role player
-
I agree. He's a pretty decent blocker and I get the idea of wanting some continuity when they will have lots of other holes to fill. But if they want to spend that kind of money to block and protect the QB they'd be better off putting it towards a good guard.
-
I agree. He's a pretty decent blocker and I get the idea of wanting some continuity when they will have lots of other holes to fill. But if they want to spend that kind of money to block and protect the QB they'd be better off putting it towards a good guard.
When have the Eagles done anything right?
-
I think $4.5M/yr is too much for a 31 yr old blocking TE.
In all fairness he might be their second best receiver after Ertz.
-
SB?
-

Well they did back down and allow us to bring in sandwiches after hoagiegate, despite the dire risk to fans lives from terrorists.
-
I think $4.5M/yr is too much for a 31 yr old blocking TE.
In all fairness he might be their second best receiver after Ertz.
yeah that's a problem....a problem that is not solved by giving an old player 6 mil
when you open up the bank for the starting te you pretty much should go with a cheap young guy as your back up
-
I would have been fine with Burton as backup.
Celek looked like the easiest $5 million for the team to clear, even moreso after locking up Ertz. I am sure that Howie has rigged this deal so Celek's cap hit is now half of what it was, so it's not a total disaster, but they could have had the full $5 mill and I'm doubtful that Celek would have been that missed.
Beginning to wonder a little more strongly if they plan on clearing cap by cutting JP. Or is this some kind of bullshtein signal about being anti-Chip by not cutting respected Eagle vets? Is DeMeco coming back too?
-
The guys they definitely can't afford to cut for cap reasons this season are Maxwell, Ertz, Murray, Kendricks, and Brandon Graham. They could free up about $6 mil by cutting Peters. Sanchez and Cooper will probably both go to free up a couple mil each. Cox almost has to have a new deal, but who could blame him if he decided to ride it out for a bigger payday with a better team?
-
Not sure Sanchez is gone unless the team is comfortable with a late round rookie as a backup. Even signing a zesty vet QB plus signing bonus isn't going to be hugely cheaper. Maybe they can get a Mike Glennon type.
If Cooper doesn't go, sound the alarms.
-
I don't see any point in keeping Celek if they want to go into this season with Buttfumble out there.
-
unless they were a SB contender there's no point in celek and even then there probably isn't
really for any money celek is a waste at this stage of his career if you have a highly paid starter ...an extension five minutes after signing that starter makes no sense
-
Hmmm, moves being made before the epically thorough & exhaustive life changing search for a head of personnel guy was completed ?
Weird
-
I'm not saying this contract is a great idea, or that the money is well spent--what the farg do I know about that nerd bullshtein--but all of a sudden Celek can't catch? He's a blocking specialist?
If homers let their love for the team color everything rosy, then this is a fine example of the opposite. Don't let your hate for the deal or the man confuse the facts. Celek can block and catch.
-
Yep...blocking and catching. And a known quantity. It also doesn't hurt that he's enthusiastic about the job, and that he can lead by example. He's certainly not a world beater, but keeping him around is a good thing.
-
The only think I really like about Celek is that he's a tough SOB.
-
So over $10 mill for the TE position which so far has been mediocre.
-
im not an ertz fanboy by any means but hes gotten better every year hes played to the point where last year where from weeks 5 thru 17 he was 2nd in the nfl in te receptions and yards and he missed two of those weeks...his trajectory is way up right now...so I have no problem with his deal
celek on the other hand could literally be done...like this season...but even if he isn't hes a back up te and you don't need to be giving back up te's in their 30's extensions...is it a horrible thing like they did with the rb's last year no...more just a completely unnecessary thing...theres other spots that are going to open up but a perfect example is cedric thorton...theres a very good chance he walks...id rather have that money to put towards a quality 3rd DT than a back up te...and the eagles aren't exactly overflowing with cash these days
the quotes from Howie after the celek signing basically say that they kept him because hes a quintessential eagle not because of what he may do on the field
-
He's a serviceable backup who can still block with the best of them.
But let's bitch some more.
-
You're new here
-
Banner on the Ertz deal: "Congrats to Eagles on Ertz deal. Player will be sick when he realizes how much money he left on table. The old market deals are irrelevant"
-
He's a serviceable backup who can still block with the best of them.
But let's bitch some more.
this is how big of a homer you are....I praise the ertz signing and mildly criticize the celek signing and what do you get upset about?
-
So over $10 mill for the TE position which so far has been mediocre.
I've got some bad news for you about the RBs.
-
Banner on the Ertz deal: "Congrats to Eagles on Ertz deal. Player will be sick when he realizes how much money he left on table. The old market deals are irrelevant"
I don't even care if he's right, aids and him need to hook up.
-
Restructuring Celek tells me that they won't be signing any serious OL candidates.
-
An unintended consequence of this kind of re-signing is stunting the development of younger players. Ideally teams should build through the draft and turn the roster over, cutting ties with the older higher salary guys. Otherwise it hurts the cap in the long run (of course if you draft like shtein, that's a fly in the ointment).
For example, if DeMeco didn't get hurt this year we wouldn't have seen how good Jordan Hicks was. And if the FO repeats the same pattern with Ryans, they give him another 3 years because they like his intangibles and let him hold down the fort even though he's in decline. And, maybe they lose Hicks to another team and he becomes a solid long term starter for them instead becoming Ryans' successor.
The team is not in very good cap shape as it is (especially if they re-sign Bradford). I'd like to see them bring back Curry. But since he'll probably get north of $7M/yr they may have taken themselves out of the market with a sentimental and lesser priority contract in Celek.
-
kelce just got 5-46-20 compared to ertz 6-44.5-21
-
So an actual top 5 TE got paid like a top 5 TE
100% man
-
actually they had pretty much identical numbers this year but ertz did it in 130 less snaps and is a year younger
-
Chiefs passing game was very TE oriented, so it shouldn't come as a shock that they paid Ertz big bucks, or even that they kept Celek for that matter.
-
He's a serviceable backup who can still block with the best of them.
But let's bitch some more.
this is how big of a homer you are....I praise the ertz signing and mildly criticize the celek signing and what do you get upset about?
I wasn't referring to you captain narcissist.
-
If you had to chose Kelce or Ertz who are you taking?
-
Tough choice. Ertz has more upside. It's not exactly Sophie's Choice, though.
I'd probably take Kelce, though, because Alex Smith is straight average, and if Kelce can produce with him under center, I'd hate to think what kind of numbers he'd put up with a legit passer.
-
If you had to chose Kelce or Ertz who are you taking?
coin flip....if I had to choose I guess id take kelce cause he scores more...but hes also played a lot more
-
Kelce's a better blocker and it's not even close. He's a better receiver too.
-
Kelce's a better blocker and it's not even close. He's a better receiver too.
Unfortunately he's on another team.
-
Kelce's a better blocker and it's not even close. He's a better receiver too.
te blocking means nothing in todays nfl
-
Blocking means everything in the NFL
-
yeah if youre an OG
what has celek and kkk's blocking got the eeagles
you need to be able to toss that pill around
-
Ertz got engaged yesterday to Julie Johnston from the USWNT.
Awwwwwwe...
* Sniffs *

Idiot

Bitter much?

Did a contract thing, took some salary as bonus to create cap room. Yadda yadda ya.
-
They've freed up like $37 mil in cap room this season with restructures Foles buying out his contract. What even is an NFL contract?
-
Gotta get that cake ready for Wentz
-
What even is an NFL contract?
You pay some one a gaziilion dollars to suck.
-
Wow, this thread was started by Feva
---
Eagles picked up the option year for 2021
-
Um...why
#Eagles TE Zach Ertz abruptly halted contract negotiations with the team, when they made an offer that had less guaranteed money than their offer in November, per @RapSheet
#FlyEaglesFly
-
Cause future cap room is tight and most other positions on the team have a significantly worse Plan B than Goedert.
-
i would not go crazy to sign 31 year old zach ertz who is already a sloth that gives you no juice
he can still get open and is a fine safety valve for wentz but hes got 2 years on his deal. use the 2 years, pay goeddert and find another backup tight end.
hes a great eagle and you want to keep guys like that around but its a 31 year old tight end with cement feet
-
https://twitter.com/ZBerm/status/1304087302948433920
It would be refreshing to read an athlete say, "I'm among the best, and I've got one more contract to get paid like it. My team is cash strapped, and they have a great player for less money to replace me with, so I'm going to keep my chin up and do my best while I'm still here, but everyone can read the writing on the wall. Another team will pay me what I need and life will go on."
-
His replacement is better. Bye.
And ftr I like Ertz. I like his wife dirtier but he’s a really good player. He’s not worth paying what he’s looking for, but someone will cake him off.
-
I’m not sold on Goedert being better.
But hey we have controversy with this and the McClane piece yesterday so perfect timing going into the season
-
gawdert is not better yet but hes also not 30 and is on a rookie deal...its a complete no brainer to let ertz walk after this year...there shouldnt be any back and forth on this amongst eagle fans and if there is its because someone gets too attached to the players
-
I'd appreciate it if all the skill players on offense were under 30 next season.
-
Goedert is not better...but he isn't much worse, and he doesn't have to be better, he just has to be a starting caliber NFL TE, which we all know he is. So, there you go.

Not only is it a good idea to let him walk, but if you're a GM there's so much uncertainty about the 2021 cap and how teams will react to it that you'd like to delay these types of decisions until they absolutely have to be made. League is entering uncharted waters here.
Ertz is a great player and could have All Pro years left in him, and the right call would still be to move on. I understand if he takes it personally but fundamentally the decision really isn't even about him or his game.

I should have said they think Goddert is a better value. He’s not better. He’s not crazy worse either.

Ertz to be out for 4-6 weeks, not two-to-four...

Probably fargs unloading him before the deadline. Don't think they have any intention of him being on the team next year.

he had little to no market before he got hurt
30 year old stop drop and roll catching but not playmaking TE with a thousand miles of tread on his tires and looking for a big contract
6th rounder from a contender maybe?
