Manziel and Mike Evans are planning to declare for the draft after tomorrow night's game

Other notable names that have declared so far:

RB Bishop Sankey (Washington)
WR Davante Adams (Fresno State)
TE Eric Ebron (North Carolina)
TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins (Washington)
NT Louis Nix III (Notre Dame)
CB Bradley Roby (Ohio State)
CB Loucheiz Purifoy (Florida)
SS Dion Bailey (USC)

Dale Murphy's son Jake (a TE for Utah) also declared

Bridgewater hasn't declared yet but he'd be stupid not to, and Clowney will declare about an hour after the Capital One Bowl ends

I wouldn't agree. "Athletic " VY and strong armed Jamarcus Russell are examples. And yeah, it didn't hurt that Young won a nat championship but still.

I'm not getting your point then.

But back to jf, I'd bet Cle will take him and it may be part of the reason why Chud was fired so quick. Everyone wants their franchise qb and everyone wants to be the next dynasty. No way manz will even play enough full seasons to be part of a dynasty. But if a team has a good system for him and takes a practical rather greedy approach and sets a goal of winning A sb over the next few years with jf, it is possible one of those years is a perfect storm of his being healthy as well as the other pieces coming together.

Although Cle is Cle, they do have a couple of elite players, arguably the best, at key positions and another key a RB doesn't need to take a high draft pick so I get the logic if they get a system friendly HC in there for manz.

Did you actually watch that game last night?   You've been clamoring for a match for Kelly's offense last night since he was hired and Manziel couldn't be a better fit if Kelly himself built him from scratch.

I don't like the kid personally and I agree that he's likely going to be a bust in the NFL, but in terms of what Kelly is theoretically looking for, Manziel is it.

That said, I'm still in on Teddy B but there's zero chance the Eagles get him.

Go Nick.

No sir.

He should be top 10 because he can ball. He's got arm strength, mobility, accuracy and the intangibles to be a good QB.

The stupid nickname helps soccer moms know who he is...but anyone who watches football and knows the game can see that he's good

He's also 6'1" & 210.  That works great in college but it's a near death sentence in the NFL.   Again, I wouldn't take him really high because I don't think he's going to be a great professional, but you can't really deny the talent he's displayed at the college level.

I don't even sweat the height any more. Brees and Wilson have kind of shown that you can be successful as a shorter QB. Of course it helps to be taller to see over the big OL but that can be schemed around a bit.

You're confusing the exceptions with the rule.  Wilson and Brees are, to the best of my memory, the only 2 QBs that are 6'1 or less who haven't had much limitation on their game in my life time.  Even Vick at his best in 2010 still had balls knocked down at the LOS or overthrew some guys because he had to elevate his passes to keep them from getting batted down.

But aside from his height, there's also the issue of durability. Manziel has taken some hits and he's not a thick dude. At least Bree's gets rid of the ball quickly and doesnt get hit very often and Wilson has some girth so if he were to take a hit, his body can absorb it better than Manziel could.

Could he be an exception to the rule as well?  Sure, why not?  I just know that I wouldn't want the next 5 years of my team's future riding on the hope that I drafted an exception to the rule with my 1st round pick...especially when you're talking about a top 5-10 pick. It's one thing to grab a JPP type guy with boom or bust potential in the 1st round because that doesn't set your franchise back 3-5 years if you miss.

Are you forgetting Jeff Kemp? I don't remember that height was a problem for Jeff Garcia though. Sonny Jurgensen was another Eagle QB and was 5-11 and a hofer. OK, maybe he was before your time, I just brought him up because its fun to mention the taterskins went after him once they found out his real name was Christian Adolph.

Flutie is the only other midget I can think of who enjoyed a moderate level of success in the NFL.

i think you are going to see when his true measurables come out he is going to be under 6'0 and under 200 lbs....im not 100% sure of his weight but theres no farging way hes 6'1...basically his size is a death sentence in the pros where he wont be able to run away from people quite like he did in college...its one thing to be short and a pocket qb....i mean you certainly are at a disadvantage there as well but you are really in a world of trouble to have a mini frame like manzell and be a scrambling/running qb...i mean look at the punishment rg3 has taken and hes 6'2 225

people bring up russell wilson in comparison to manzell...but forget that he was a third rounder....i would def take manzell in the third or fourth round

could manzell have some highlite type plays int he league sure...the guy has talent for sure....hes not a scrub....but would i put my all my eggs in his basket...meaning a top 5 pick....to be my franchises future.....hell no

I wouldn't hate the Dennard pick. Eagles are somewhat saddled with Carey Williams for another year for cap reasons and Dennard wouldn't get to be eased in as a slot corner. Still, good value for the long term picture though and might be bpa by then. Probably rather have Pryor or HHCD though.

Need Defense, don't want Beckham. Maybe if they could get Orakpo or another good rush backer I'd be OK with Lee or Evans at WR. Don't want another small WR but if Lee replaced DeSean after next year, it would probably save $8-9 million/year.

It blows the draft is even late this year. I wish they'd move it up a few weeks rather than move it back. Same with free agency, move it to mid Feb. This month absolutely sucks.

That sucks...they have the cap space too. But they have a bunch of other needs to address. He's the top f/a on my wish list. There are plenty of safeties to chose from so that's getting addressed. Orakpo is exactly the kind of player the birds D needs.

If it's a punter or QB or even a RB then I'm not looking at the press numbers. But lineman and LBs? Worth noting.

Not saying he zesty or anything but 21 isn't a good number.

Long ass arms make it harder to do full reps. Would rather see them deadlift instead of bench, but after seeing some of these morons lift at least half of them would herniate every disc.

There's what you can do in the gym, and what you can do on the field.  Not the same thing.

Pretty sure that's what I meant when I posted "doesn't mean shtein" although you may not have been referring to my post.

Whatever.

i dont even think theres a comparison btwn the two and it makes me furious when people do it....russell wilson was drafted in the third because he was deemed too short....thats it thats the list....I mean more or less he was looked at as a shorter andrew luck....manzell has numerous issues and his heigh might not crack the top three...he should be compared to michael vick or doug flutie

four might be pushing it.....but i wouldnt take manzell for sure in the first two rounds

Completely hypothetical, really just throwing it out there for discussion (draft is 50 days away btw). Bridgewater did not look good on his pro day, the guys on Sirius NFL said he looked worse than Geno Smith last year. That being said, he falls to 22, do you take him?
Title: Re: 2014 NFL Draft Thread

no

they are too thin, pretty much everywhere on defense, to waste a 1st round pick on a qb. they need to get someone who will contribute immediately. but i would consider trading a future selection or something to get him if he falls in the to 20s.

I can't see him dropping like that as a result of pro day, but if he does, it means basically every team has either passed on him or passed on the chance to trade up to get him, including a bunch of teams that are absolutely desperate at the QB position.

If the Eagles took him in scenario it's because they literally think they are the smartest guys in the room.
Title: Re: 2014 NFL Draft Thread
Post by: Eagaholic on March 19, 2014, 11:18:52 PM
Yeah, agree with not taking Bridgewater but I wouldn't be shocked at all to see him fall. Every year there's at least one who does. All time favorite was Aaron Rodgers who fell to right about to where the Eagles are sitting now. All off season it was neck and neck between he and Alex Smith for #1 overall until maybe 3 weeks before draft day when Rodgers went into free fall. Similar situation to TB.

Why my favorite? Because Washington was absolutely desperate for a QB and creaming themselves that Rodgers was going to fall into their messy lap - then got totally blind sided by GB taking him the pick before when Favre was in his prime. It's a happy ending though because Washington finally got their franchise qb. P&L.

even worse than taking it off the weekend for me is the first round having its own day....the first round is the least exciting round of the draft by far...now with no second round to look forward to after it i dont even really need to see anything in the first round but the eagles pick....i mean i still watch it but its not the same for me

i realize its not feasible time wise but lets for sake of argument say the draft started on thurs but went two rounds....id still prefer it to be sat and sun but id be ok with that

I won't like the draft until it's stretched over ten days, one Saturday through the next Monday:

Round one preview all day Saturday.
Actual round one picks on Sunday.
Analysis on Monday.
Preview Tuesday for
Round 2 on Wednesday.
Breakdown on Thursday.
Round 3 Friday night.
Wrap up round three Saturday morning and then Round 4 picks Saturday night.
Round 5 and half of Round 6 on Sunday.
Last half of round 6 and round 7 on Monday, then a Special Primetime Monday Night with the guys to jerk off over the whole thing.

Half hour per pick, every round. Instead of just talking heads and college highlights, undrafted players can elect to participate in draft day workouts for a chance to improve their stock. Also, the Raiders start a lottery to see who they'll pick every round.

Don't forget trying to switch it to 18 games, 14 teams in the playoffs, disallowing players celebrations, making the defense all but irrelevant by gearing everything toward the offense, etc.

All they give a shtein about is money.  The game itself isn't even third or fourth on the list.
Title: Re: 2014 NFL Draft Thread

exactly...also dont forget more and more flex games

I especially hate the extra playoff teams....its perfect right now....most teams can win it all and the games are mostly really good

what I hate more than anything tho is his idea of putting games on every night eventually.....farging tuesday nite nfl??....that would water down the product so much

sundays is what made the nfl and why it is/was so special

what kills me is they can make a million changes having to do with the schedule but the one thing they should do....putting the super bowl on sat....they wont

NFL football belongs at 1:00 on Sundays unless your team is playing west of the Mississippi, and honestly, no one there deserves a goddamn team anyway.  Monday nights suck, Sunday nights are worse and don't even get me started on weekdays.  Seriously, if Goodell and the networks get their wish, we as fans should simply stop watching.  Getting rid of my season tickets was the second to final straw for me anyway.  I don't have a financial connection with those dickfaces anymore so if they keep the unfettered money whoring going, I might just say farg it and spend time doing other things on Sundays.  And Saturdays, Mondays, etc...

Yeah the expanded schedule and extra playoff teams is really farging stupid. And I agree on the games being on different days.

I like the Sunday/Monday with the couple late season Saturday tilts. Like how it was 10-15yrs ago.

Now the Thursday shtein is nothing but a money grab. Same as the preseason being charged full price

My personal favorite dumb move was when they gave EA exclusive rights to make NFL video games. Has anyone actually bought a copy of Madden in the last ten years because it was good? Of course not. People only buy Madden because they buy it every year, they want these particular roster updates, or they got a new console.

But yeah, putting half the teams in the playoffs is a dumb move, too.

If I was the leader of the NFL, I would expand the rosters to 140. If a defensive player's assignment scores, that defender gets torn limb from limb and is cannibalized by his team mates. There's no better motivator than cannibalization. Other than toss salad man of course.

There's a difference between disliking them personally and advocating for their banishment, IGY.   I don't like them but I think legislating them out of the league is idiotic.

Again, I'm an "act like you've been there before" kind of guy but that doesn't mean I think showboating should be penalized.  The opposite, actually.  I think if a guy showboats then it's the opponents' responsibility to stop him and then remind him why acting like that ain't gonna be tolerated between the lines.   Let the players settle it, not some desk-bound paper-pushing douchebag lawyer.

There are a lot of people trying to raise their kids not to act like douchebags.  Kids idolize players.  You have to understand that it's better to have a society of good sports than of braggarts, right?  The idea of respecting your opponent enough to refrain from prancing around when you best him of much greater value than the idea of being allowed to flaunt a victory.  It's about decency.

I get that you don't like kids or care or whatever tough guy, but kids there are and it serves you better that they be decent towards and respectful of other people, like you.  Even if you don't deserve it.

Their parents act like douchebags on game day. The talking heads screaming over highlights act like super douchebags. Some of the coaches are douchebags by default. The cameramen make sure to shoot the cheerleaders from the upskirt angle. The problem isn't some guy backpedaling into the endzone and laughing with his teammates.

You'd say the same thing about language in the stands.

I get it.  And you're right, it's up to me to raise my kids. And everyone else theirs.  I'll be pointing out to them that most people who act like that are terrible human beings and the only reason they are rewarded is that people suck, are a cancer on the earth, and the lowest common denominator rules.  So yeah, dance DeSean.

Count me as one of the folks who wishes you'd stop yelling motherfarger next to my ten year old kid, and thinks it's pretty zesty to do a WWF dance after making a tackle.  And if the stadium wants to make arule that you need to watch your mouth, or the NFL wants to make a rule that you shouldn't act like a spoiled four year old on the field, I'll welcome it.

im not saying you should be dropping f bombs every five minutes around your kids...but my parents were lettin bullshtein icehole ect loose from basically the time me my brothers and sisters were out the womb but somehow we all knew when to not use that kind of language...we didnt go to school and start telling the teacher to give us our motherfarging homework bitch....i cant stand people who who have a look on their face like their kids just witnessed a murder when you curse around them

curse words are just that....words...dont make them anything more

theres so many other things to worry about as far as raising kids...and you know whats even less important than curse words if there could even be anything - nfl end zone celebrations
Title: Re: 2014 NFL Draft Thread
Post by: Rome on April 25, 2014, 10:39:51 PM
Growing up where we did cursing was part of life.  Every other word out of our mouths was farg, so it's no big deal to me if someone says it near my kid.  If they start getting nasty about it, then I step in and ask politely to tone it down.  Just common courtesy not to be dropping bomb after bomb around kids, but I definitely understand the football game side of it.  When we were kids you heard serious cursing at games and a whole lot of racial shtein too.  I mean a lottttttt, but that's changed a bit over the years.  That said, I'm sure n-bombs are flying in houses all over the DelVal when shtein gets ugly, though.

BTW... I went to the Eagles/Jags game in Jacksonville in 2010 when Vick lit them up and I heard more n-bombs there than I've ever heard anywhere else.  The ironic thing is their quarterback was David Garrard.

Go figure, right?

Going to be interested to see where AJ goes:

Matches narrative: Known for his accuracy, McCarron was judged through video analysis to have thrown 15.2 percent of his passes "off target." The rest were deemed catchable, the highest percentage among this group of quarterbacks.

Counters narrative: Since the start of the 2012 season, McCarron has completed 54.7 percent of passes thrown 25 yards or longer, the highest mark of any qualified quarterback. Of his 53 total passes in this category, he threw 17 touchdowns without an interception.

Analysis: For someone whose arm is said to be average at best, McCarron found a way to be exceptionally efficient on his deep passes. In the NFL, however, arm strength can be more important in terms of driving midrange throws with velocity than simply having the capacity to reach a deep receiver.

I'd be fine with Ha Ha here. I know you don't like him igs, no need to repeat it. I'd be shocked if the Eagles went safety. Pretty much every mock had them taking Brandin Cook which makes no sense since he's so much like Desean. Darqueze would be a great pick but I don't see them going CB. Think we're in for a surprise pick or a trade back.

I tried to trace back everything they gave up and got in all of the 2013-2014 trades that led up to them getting Manziel but gave up about halfway through... there are a lot of moving parts, but the big tradeoff was essentially getting Johnny Football for Trent Richardson. That sounds like a winning gamble even if Manziel is a bust.

yeah im not a manzell guy but just from their perspective they got the qb that they could have justifiably taken at four and been happy....instead they got him at 22 still made another top ten pick and have an extra 1 and 4 next year

you cant work the draft better than that

Unbelievable. I think that the NFL's testing program is as ill-conceived as every other facet of the evil drug war (and the fact that they test for a harmless recreational drug is absurd), but I cannot comprehend Gordon's stupidity. The guy might legitimately be the best wide receiver in the world right now, and the world contains Calvin Johnson. And he's literally pissing it all away so he can inhale a burned plant. Imagine all the hours he's put into becoming the player he is. farging wasted. I'm actually angry about this, because he's so fun to watch.

Not only that, but the whole league smokes out. Only the idiots get caught for it. If Gordon hadn't already been in the substance program due to prior idiocy, he could have safely smoked up 11 months out of the year like DJax and everyone else obviously does.

See, I don't get that.  Landry has 0 athleticism.  None.  He would be who I'd think you'd complain about if the Eagles took him because his upside is all slot.  Doesn't run well, and the agility drills (SS/cone) were terrrrrrrible times.  He can catch the ball but he isn't nearly as athletic as Matthews and is 3 inches smaller.

I don't know whether Matthews will pan out, but he can at least play the outside with his size + speed.  I think Landry is Avant 2.0 (which is fine, but his ceiling is really limited, far more so than Matthews IMO, but that's just a difference of opinion).

I don't dislike either of the wide receivers taken, I just think they both were taken a bit early and neither has a high ceiling. which is not what you want when that's what you did with your first round pick.

QuoteThe goal of this study is to determine which teams draft the best — not which teams have drafted the best players. So a team, like the Patriots, who routinely pick at the end of rounds, might not bring in the type of marquee rookies that a team like the Lions have; but New England has done a better job of picking given their positions in the draft order.

Each draft pick has been assigned a numerical grade based on the player's performance, number of games played, positional value and the pick with which they were selected. The average grade was 0.55.

Performance was based on Pro Football Focus grades. Positional value was based on the average salary of each position. And the value of the draft pick was based on Jimmy Johnson's famed draft pick value chart. Performance and games played accounts for about two-thirds of the grade, while pick and positional value accounts for the remaining third.

The grade is not necessarily a representation of the player's ability but rather the value of the pick he was selected with. For instance, Andrew Luck is probably a better player than Russell Wilson, but Wilson has a higher grade because he was picked in the third round. The Colts do not get credit for being good drafters for making a pick that even the worst GM would have made.

washingtons latest pick....i know its 7th round but this is still pretty funny...

Has very small hands and short arms. Lumbering mover. One-speed route runner with minimal burst and acceleration to separate. Much of his production is schemed -- creates little on his own. Can be phased by traffic (hears footsteps) -- hands are suspect. Struggles sustaining blocks (falls off and is controlled too easily). Tends to play tall and upright. Bench-pressed 225 pounds only 19 times at his pro day. Offers little as a blocker.

I watched the last couple of hours of the draft at a bar here in town and when they showed Sam making out cake-style with his boyfriend the place went apeshtein with gay slurs.  My buddy was homophobe indignant about it and insisted on paying his tab and leaving.  There was about 10-15 people sitting with us and I turned to the bartender after he left and said, "shtein, if that's all that took to get rid of that icehole, I would have planted a kiss on him hours ago."

Seriously, though... the cake thing was hilarious.  I was actually giddy thinking about how the farging internet was going to melt down over it afterward.  People are so goddamn stupid and freak out over the pettiest shtein.

They don't even recognize the hypocrisy of being so hateful while invoking their religion. Especially Christians since God and Jesus said to love thy neighbor and to be kind to fellow man.

I agree that any hateful bigot should be exposed and humiliated just like the racists back in the Jim Crow and civil rights days were exposed.

They didn't call Hank Fraley "Honey Buns" for nothing.

Seriously it seems a little odd that Vincent would have played with that many openly gay players (suggesting that it's rather common) without a single gay player's identity ever leaking out. Obviously it would have been a pretty big betrayal to out someone in the NFL, but the number of jerks in the NFL who would blab probably outweighs the number of gay players.

I'm 150% for Gay Marriage, I don't like that religious folks try to dictate societal rules and a gay couple deserves the exact same rights as non gay couples because they also pay taxes and contribute to society. But the whole Sams draft day act was lame. The crying is fine, kissing your boyfriend...fine. Smearing cake on his face and licking it off...really? I think of him more as an attention whore now than a courageous soul. Really he's more about being an activist than focusing on his football career, and ultimately that's why he'll be cut.
Title: Re: 2014 NFL Draft Thread
Post by: QB Eagles on May 11, 2014, 11:56:03 AM
SD, I guess my reaction was a bit like yours. I was moved by Sam's overwhelming emotions and I actually liked that his boyfriend was there and that he kissed him repeatedly, instead of trying to hide or downplay the historical meaning of the draft pick.

The cake part, however, came several minutes after the phone call and was a separate piece of tape (and I don't believe it was live). There wasn't really any reason for ESPN to show it other than to try to generate controversy. I've never seen anything like that with straight couples during the draft, it was more of a wedding reception makeout session. Sam can obviously celebrate the pick any way he wants but I question ESPN's decision to broadcast the cake part.

I don't go as far as you do in reading into it that he's all about being an activist or attention whore, and that he'll be cut. It's very possible that he'll have a Tebow-like career, with people both overrating and underrating his career for reasons that have nothing to do with football, and with every aspect of his career blown way out of proportion by the media for the same reasons. But I'm not willing to go to the next step and say he's actively stoking that, because so far it just looks like he's a guy who wants to play football and lead his life openly.

Who are we to judge how this guy acts especially considering what he's been through?

The guy is a black, gay professional football player who's been subjected to intense scrutiny and outright hostility ever since he came out.  Gays in this country are ridiculed, harassed, discriminated against and treated as pariahs in this so-called "free" society.  They're accused of being child molesters, deviants and evil.  If they're going to be treated like that, I can't blame them for giving everyone a collective middle finger.

They're not asking for tolerance anymore.  They're demanding it and that's a great thing.   The ultimate irony of this is the game he plays is ultra-violent, yet no one seems to give a shtein about guys getting their brains beat out.  But two dudes making out on television... The cake bit was probably pushed by the producer of whatever ESPN show was chronicling him...the one Trey Wengo mentioned every time Sam was mentioned. Also, I don't care what anybody says: the only reason he lasted until late in the seventh round, and was the first SEC defensive player of the year to not be drafted in the first round, other than our very own DeMeco Ryans who went with the first pick in the 2nd round, is because he's gay.
