yeah the free agents are worthless
buyout briere and breezy and its automatically a successful offseason
I thought they could only buy out one?
I'm fine with both being gone, especially the fruitcake from Russia, but still...
so did i...but i read an article the other day that you can use your two buyouts at the same time if you choose
That's a shteinload of money to be pudding into the street but moneybags Snider can afford it.
Fire Homer while he's at it.
I feel like I rein down on the phils management way more than the flyers, which is insane considering the Flyers essentially traded away a cup(Richards, Carter).
The free agents list is a pile of garbage.
the good thing is however many years are left on a players deal you get to double that and you have your window in which you can pay the person...so for breezy they would have 14 years to pay him...makes it a little less distateful
it also gives you a little bit of incentive to do it this year versus next
Pissing = pudding per autocorrect.
Amusing.

Death was pretty much the first thing that came to mind. I hope the farger is stoned (by rocks that is) to death upon his return to Philadelphia.
He has a point about peeps getting paid for doing nothing.
If he's referring to himself.

The Spectrum erupted 26 years ago today.
26 years. Wow.
Watching the Flyers on their way to another cup..... oh wait richards and carter are wearing kings uni's never mind.
flyers bagged that austrian scrub they had been persuing
things are obviously going to change bwtn now and the start of the season but as of right now the flyers have the highest payroll in the nhl and by a significant amount
I have a bad feeling that Bryzgalov is still on this team next season.
Wonder how his summer internship at the homeless shelter is going?
i should clarify that "as of now" means for the 2013-2014 season...meaning they currently have 24 players under contract for the 2013-14 season that count towards the cap next year that add up to be the highest cap in the league...next closest team is more than 5 million below them

Generally not good news when that fact is combined with also having the lowest number of exciting players in the NHL.
Traded a 4th and a Phantom to the Islanders for the rights to Mark Streit. Captain, offensive d-man, turns 36 in December. Cup time
I wonder if Homer is aware that you're actually allowed to sign guys in their 20s?

Man, farg!
Supposedly Streit wants 16.5 million for a 3-year contract.
that would be an excellent pick-up if the flyers were good enough to win a cup...they deseperately need offensive play from the point and hes a great veteran leader
I do think that picking up Streit beats trading Courterier and the #1 pick for Yandle. Other than age, I don't see what Yandle really has that Streit can't provide, at least in the short term.
Mostly I'd rather have the Flyers keep and develop the young forwards, and go for defense in this draft.
Oh, and amnesty Bryzgalov for the love of all that's holy!
Looks like Streit gets 4 years at $5.25 million.
Quote@johnclarknbc10: ESPN reporting Flyers have told Danny Briere he will be bought out
Reports say Bryz as well.
Bryz's agent says Holmgren assured Bryz is not getting bought out. Holmgren said no assurances have been made.
Flyers looking to trade for Jonathan Bernier and Bobby Ryan, per the Sporting News.
Speaking of Bryz's lying mouthpiece, he said this about the situation:
Quote"It's a very tough, tough situation, because the media, for whatever reason, tends to focus on goaltending," Winter said. "He'd rather stay in Philadelphia, he'd rather work through this, he'd rather make Philadelphia's goaltending a strength instead of a weakness.
"The easy route out is to make noise like you don't like it there, like you don't want to stay there, like you're going to run away from [Philadelphia media], who constantly attack you with no fact or basis.
"At the end of the day, he would rather look face-first into that storm and face the challenge and make the changes necessary for the goaltending to be part of the success Philadelphia has, rather than run away from it. Ilya Bryzgalov is a lot of things, but he's not afraid of a challenge."
Yes. It's definitely the media's fault that your client absolutely sucks and is a weakminded Hoyda bitch.
Seriously, kill all lawyers and agents. Now please.
Okay. Almost all.
Bryz is GONE
Tweets stolen from PSF board:

Good riddance. When's Homer getting canned?
Read that his buyout pays him about $1.6mil a year for 14 years. Does he still get this even if he signs with another team?
Yep.
when all is said and done he will have made 40 mil for two hideous years in town
also flyers are currently 33/1 to win the cup next year....thats 19th in the league
Nauseating. The whole thing is an embarrassment but the only thing worse would have been if they hadn't cut his ass.
i had faith they would and was never really worried......they had to do it
Wonder if Homer's plan is to give a huge offer sheet to BOB and blow draft picks too. Sounds about right for this franchise
So, which will come first for Bryz, Vezina or Cup?
streit officially signed for 4/21
i dont get it....ill never get this franchise
Doubt they'll be able to trade up to get one of the top 3 studs, but I'd love to see them move up for Ristolainen. Started reading articles on this kid when the Flyers were terrible to see who they might be able to get. At the time he was considered a top 10-15 pick, now it looks like he's a top 5-10 pick. I watched some videos on him, he's nasty.
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=675329
My prediction if they don't trade up is they trade the pick for a Veteran defenseman. Maybe they offload another salary and add a prospect like Laughton for a puck moving D man. They clearly think they have a shot next season otherwise they don't bring a guy like Streit into the mix.
I'm actually fine with giving Mason a shot next season. He's young and I saw enough of him late last season to see he has the skills to be a good NHL goalie.
Supposedly the Flyers are offering Coburn/Read and #11 to move up to Carolina (#5), Calgary (#6) or Edmonton (#7) to guarantee one of the top d-men in tomorrow's draft
That would be an awful trade so I fully expect it to go through. They needed to tank last season especially once they were statistically eliminated but instead they won a bunch of meaningless games. Idiots.
awful... I hate Holmgren
If you think that's bad you don't even want to know the Edmonton rumor.
i hope the flyers are proud right now about winning six of their last seven games
http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inqflyersreport/Source-Flyers-eye-Lacavalier-.html
Hey, look! A shiny piece of shtein that will break down in two years! Let's get him!
I thought the Flyers already had a center whose career peaked in 2006.
5 years/$40M
book it.
Sam Morin, Philadelphia Flyer
A Flyers pick if ever I saw one.
From what I've read, he's big, "mean," likes to hit and fight and has some offensive potential, but is extremely raw. Probably won't see him in Philly until 2016.
Little surprised that Holmgren didn't try to trade down and get a little something extra. Seems Morin would have been there in 5 picks, but who knows?
EDIT: The more I read, the more I wish they had traded down.
Horendus pick. Horrible. Bigtime reach. Typical slow moving Flyers defenseman. An analyst said "Flyers fans are going yo love this guy"...nothing more really needs to be said. They don't farging get it and never will. Maybe when Ed dies...who knows.
There were much better options on the board.
They took Swedish defenseman Robert Haag with their 2nd round pick. International scouting ranked Haag higher than they did Morin.

I think the Flyers are hoping for a Pronger/Chara type. That's a lot to ask of a 17 year old beanpole, though.
3rd Round (#72): Tyrell Goulbourne
Apparently a Rinaldo-type. Whoopee!
http://youtu.be/VIr_kMM8Sis
No Round 4 pick
Round 5 (132) - Terrance Amorosa - a high school defenseman from New Hampshire. Apparently no junior team. Unranked.
:sly
Round 6 - Merrick Madsen - High school goalie from New Hampshire. Again, apparently no junior team. 26th ranked goalie in the draft.
They had a legit shot at Jones if they had just tanked like everyone else.

Which is fine except the league is trending away from those types of players meanwhile the flyers keep stockpiling them. Not to mention Pronger/ Chara had offensive potential...this guy will tip out at 25 points max
where im at I don't have television so I couldn't watch....was there talk of teams tryin to move up and get jones after he dropped a couple spots...and if so were the flyers one of them?
They were locked in to the Lerch looking motherfarger. I doubt anyone had ever seen Jones much less thought enough of him to move up.
They need a franchise wide reboot starting with the fossil owner.
I wanted them to trade back for Pulock, instead they go for the neanderthal. Wonderful. Love how they appeared to draft completely on need, not value. This team is farged

Surprisingly, the draft went chalk until Jersey traded out of 9 to get Schneider. There were some ripples of rumors, but nothing that seemed that close to happening.
Supposedly the Canadiens wanted to trade for #11 to get Morin, and the Flyers said no.
last week on WIP morganti was saying that for the past 4-5 years there has been no long term plan because every year they try to "win one more for Ed" before he dies.
they really are the raiders of the NHL
If the plan involves giving all their best players away, trading for or signing garbage, and completely ignoring the draft to build the team, they're right on schedule.

Vinny's a Flyer.
FIVE YEARS/$22.5M!
:-D times infinity.
I like this move. It gives them flexibility. I mean, farg it, if you're going to sign Streit you're going for it. The Flyers circumvent the cap as well as any team in the league. They were strapped and still added $10 million knowing they have a bunch of f/a's to sign. Wonder if they'll move a young guy and maybe some salary for a puck moving defenseman.
clown show
If you merged the Raiders and the Skins and made them an NHL team you'd have the Flyers.
QuoteThe Philadelphia Flyers and captain Claude Giroux finalized an eight-year extension worth $66.2 million Thursday, sources told ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun.
The extension is worth $8.275 million per year, sources said. Giroux still has one more year left on his current deal, so the new extension kicks in for the 2014-15 season.
The deal, which sources said also includes a full no-movement clause, comes with the Flyers reshaping a team that missed the playoffs last season.
That's a staggering amount of dough. It would be nice if they actually got someone similar in talent for him to play with, though.

Agreed - updated - it's $1.65M per Carchidi. That's borderline bargain territory.
their two goalies combined make less than $4M I believe. from one extreme to another

Hopefully he learned something under Lombardi, but I'm not sure much changes with the Flyers as long as Snider is in charge. It'll be an "ALL IN!" thing every year until he's gone, and probably getting more desperate each year as he ages.
The first thing he should do is get Richards & Carter back.[/IGY]
what number would you put on your excitement for the upcoming flyer season?
10 - one of the cup favorites
9 - a cup contender
7/8 - with the right bounces
5/6 - eh...ill wait and see
3/4 - they got older not better
1/2 - sell the team mr snider
5 (no breezy)
2 nice additions (if not contracts)
2 divisional teams did not step up...devils were hit hard
-2 defense still weak
1 realignment

really looking forward to the possibilities
Probably more down around a 4, the lowest in a while. I guess I'll need to see some results to move the meter any higher. I am excited about the subtraction of Bryz. Also excited about Hextall even though in my heart I know it's just a cockteasing move to keep us nostalgic 80s kids interested while the old man sticks with Holmgren for another 5 years.
6 - no breezy is a winning season any way you look at it. I want that 2010 playoff feeling again. Damn that was awesome.
Really, Don? I had zero expectations for that 2010 team going into the playoffs. It was awesome when they kept winning because the whole playoffs felt like playing with house money, but I'd rather go into the playoffs truly believing that the Flyers were one of the top 3-4 teams in the playoffs and having everyone taking them seriously as a Cup contender. And there have actually been a number of times over the last 20 years when I felt that was true, and the team just blew it or ran into someone superior.
Oh shtein, I had no hope going in to the playoffs. Having to get in, on the last day of the season in a shoot out was comical. Zero expectations going in. Beating the Devils in the first round was perfect and I thought they'd get bounced by Boston the next round. Of course it turned out to be one of the best playoff series in Flyers history. Just the shock of that team actually getting past Montreal and going to the Stanley Cup was exciting.
I'm at a 5. I still firmly believe they're screwed until Snider dies or doesn't have a controlling hand.
where the farg is the schedule.....the nhl is a joke
They're waiting until the agreement for NHL players to participate in the Olympics is finished.
i wasnt being literal
just stating how much of a joke this league is
That I can't disagree with.
i mean they announced the date....and they planned it for the all star break so nothing else would be going on....aaaaaand they missed it
what other pro league would ever do that
and there she is.....

Quote@TimCBaines: Philly #Flyers fans: Claude Giroux injured his wrist today golfing when his wedge shaft snapped. Surgery after cutting tendons. #giroux #nhl
Looked on the Flyers' website. It's not the wrist, it's the right index finger (http://flyers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=680285).
QuoteBelow is a statement from Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren on Claude Giroux's injury.
"Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux had successful surgery this afternoon on his right index finger performed by Dr. Katherine Boyd at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Canada. Giroux was golfing today when his golf club shattered and splintered into his index finger. Although there were no broken bones, there was some damage to his extensor tendons in his finger. He is expected to have a full recovery in 5-6 weeks."
Nothing to do with the wrist. The Flyers:

did that fall thru?....or was it false reports?
if so that would be great news
Some are claiming it's basically a done deal, but can't be officially signed until the Flyers clear cap space.
It's the Flyers, so who really knows...
a try out contract is a lot different than a 3 yr 8 mil no trade deal
It's a tryout contract, if they like what they see then they'll sign him. They're $2 million over right now so if they want him they'll go over the cap then have space once the season starts and they LTIR Pronger.
it's only a tryout until they have cap space to sign him. it's the 3 year deal people have been talking about and it's awful

I give credit to Schenn for fighting someone bigger and is a better fighter than him, but he got tuned up:
http://the700level.com/flyers/stunning-photos-and-video-of-agonizing-brayden-schenn-fight/
I'm usually a "preseason doesn't matter" guy with most sports but with hockey you can gauge how a team is going to do to a certain degree. Early indications are this might be another long season.
More agonizing than the Schenn fight was Emery's feeding of Ovechkin (http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/?id=2013010097-659-h) for the Cap's 5th goal.
And I agree... I think it's going to be a very long season. This dry spell in Philly sports may never end.
