Former Giants WR. That came out of nowhere.
Hmmm.
Coming off serious knee surgery.
If healthy, solid signing.
Makes me wonder if there's something else up with Maclin. Giants fans were positive he was going to re-sign.
Could be right on Maclin.
But this is an adequate replacement, again if his knee is right.
I knew he had a knee injury, I didn't realize it was microfracture surgery. They're saying he might not be ready till midseason. Whatever, he's quality depth.
I got a mild chub when I read the title.
Hell, it was 50/50 seeing how this offseason has gone so far.
I have a quarter chub now. Still wackable.
Roob tweeted (hi igy!) that this has nothing to do with Maclin's status
Wasn't it Steve Smith that caught Eli's most memorable pass in the Superbowl on top of his helmet?
That was David Tyree...
Regardless, this is a bitch slap to the Giants, and he'll be a great addition if healthy.
Probably start on PUP and then be ready to roll week 6.
Nice.
Suck on it, Giants fans.
And he better not get issued #12.
Coughlin was quoted as saying he had a 'ways to go' as far as playing goes. The Eagles examined him and said he could be ready early into the season.
Bleeding Green suggesting that he starts on PUP. That wouldn't be to solve the Maclin problem.
But if Maclin's OK, where does Smith fit in? As the #4 or does he bump Avant?
If he gets that knee right, this could be a REAL good signing. He was Eli's 3rd down converter with great hands, similar to (if not better than) what Avant is for the Eagles. If nothing else, it's a nice farg you to the Giants because they were exploring the option of bringing him back.
If his knee heals up good, he can play linebacker?
Roob is on CSN right now saying he talked to someone down at the Novacare who said the Eagles think Smith could be back within the first month of the season.
If it makes Riley Cooper disappear, good.
Supposedly he is getting 4 million this season, 2 million guaranteed. Doesn't sound like a guy they only plan to have for half a season.
I have no idea how the cap works, but I would rather see them sign Pimp and Vick first.
Can't really complain about this signing. On a WR-starved team, Smith (when healthy) catches for 1000 yards easily. On the Eagles, I guess he only plays when Jackson gets concussed and Maclin is out with his AIDS again.

Yeah, I'm just impatient and want to see those guys locked up. Pimp first and foremost.
I think I am more surprised by this signing than Asomugha.

lol
Both shouldn't be an issue. It just comes down to how much of Vick's salary they want to push forward.
How much of this is a shot over Pimp's bow?
I'm not arguing SSmith is even close to Pimp, but the FO might.
The Eagles are playing with farg you money at this point. Its getting kind of funny.
Meh why do it with a guy coming off a serious injury, that doesn't give you much leverage.

None. This SHOULDN'T affect Pimp in the least. If he can get healthy... it takes snaps away from maybe Avant more than anyone else.
Where is IGY to explain all of this for us?
Listening to rap music and bad-mouthing his country, I'll bet.
At bible study with members of his southern christian revival rock band.
Smith said the Eagles were in play for weeks.
Lurie really is a Red Sox fan, isn't he. He just wants everyone in the New York area to be pissed off.
Smith also jumped in on the Shady-Osi bitch fight awhile back. He posted pic of am empty trophy case with the Eagles logo along with him and Eli celebrating after they won.
A retarded professional athlete making an ass of hisself (sic) ain't exactly news.

Exactly. This is purely a signing on hope and for a solid pair of extra hands in case someone goes down. I dont think they're expecting the world from the guy after microfracture surgery. I highly doubt the doctors on both sides are that far off on their medical opinion--especially seeing this type of injury numerous times.
Im guessing he probably wont be himself until next season, but if he can get 3/4 of the way there and somehow contribute possession-wise post season--fine by me. I still dont see him taking snaps away from Avant--who is healthy and knows the system inside out.

It's more like lining up for a race and being soundly beaten by a superior opponent. In other words, red face wanted a head start.
why is steve smith such a big deal to the giants...hes a wr coming off microfracture surgery...the giants were probably right in being cautious with resigning him and the eagles were right in taking a chance on him
hes 50/50 to ever be prodcutive again and certainly will never duplicate his best season....giants need to get over themselves
the one thing i would have liked the eagles to have done is give him a two year johnson...that way if he does recover to a good level (this year which is highly unlikely) you didnt set him up to go to another team after this season...and if it takes him until 2012 to get back to himself again they have him for that season
I think you answered your own question on why they are pissed.
If he does come back around after this year (which is possible) and is productive the Giants/fans still have one of their sure handed receivers because he would of signed a multi-year contract. The same reason you wish the Eagles signed him for 2 years.
He definitely would of.

thats not a reason to be pissed...if they really want him they can get him at the end of this season after the eagles have brought him back to health
thats IF he is ever healthy again which is a huge if...yet another reason not to be going over the top right now like the they are...if they cared that much about him they would have had him locked up early...but they rightfully have major concerns about his health...which again is completely understandable but then dont get all bitchy when you lose him....cant have it both ways
It's not a huge if.
to you it isnt because hes on the eagles
but if he was jeremy maclin and the giants had signed him coming off a microfracture youd be loling and saying good luck with "our" injured scraps giants
I'm a homer because every medical opinion we've heard suggests he'll be fine.
all any have said is when he might be able to come back and even those have varied significantly
no one knows how you will respond to microfracture surgery....i dont deny he could easily come back at some point and be a productive player...but theres pretty big risks involved with that injury as well...which goes to my point that the giants should just chill out and stop acting like hes coming off his 100+ catch season

I agree because leaving it up to Randall puts him in an awkward position and he always wants to be the good guy. I'm not even a huge Randall fan but he was an icon and is deserving of his number not going to average players.
Randall hasn't been an Eagle for 15 years, who cares what he wants.
I mean, one of my all time favorite Eagles, but it's been 15 friggen years already and Ronnie Brown is already wearing Westbrook's number and he's only been gone for a few years.
all due respect to 36 he is not even close to being on randalls level as far as an all time eagle icon
i wouldnt be against giving out 12 to some young stud qb but a guy who was a giant 48 hrs ago who might be an eagle for all of 8 games aint gettin 12 if i own the eagles....good for lurie if this is all true...next step?....get your funholey wife to approve a switch back to the jersey randall wore
The only difference between Westbrook and Randall is one was a QB. Westbrook deserves just as much respect as Randall does. It's just a freaking number. I don't think jersey numbers in football should be retired or considered sacred. I mean, there are only so many numbers and a lot of players on the roster, it's not like another sport where you can retire every jersey because you only field a team of 20.
They're never switching back, we're stuck with the diarrhea green. I don't know how anyone - especially a chick - can look at their current shade of green and think "Oh yeah, that looks much better than this iconic kelly green"
im not talking about respect or how good of a player each one was on paper...im talking about iconic status...like an eagles mount rushmore....randall was a black qb in the 80's who was at the time unlike any other qb to ever play the game...i think people forget he won an nfl mvp
randall is an nfl icon who played with the eagles....westbrook was a great eagle
I don't think any Eagle player should wear the number 12, or 36. I'm all for retiring numbers and think Lurie should have an Eagles hof or something like that. Farg Steve Smith. He can find another number.
As far as the signing of Smith, I like it. He's better than Avant or Cooper. I've heard a lot of conflicting reports about his recovery, we'll just have to wait and see I guess.
My guess is he's playing by mid October, maybe by game 6.

I usually disagree with your backwards self-loathing nonsense but in this instance you nailed it on the head.
Giving out the 12 to anyone is the ultimate in stupidity even if Randall doesn't care. We care. He was a God to those of us who saw him live and in person.
36 should be shelved for maybe two years and then eased back in. Not a total retirement but let it gather some dust awhile.
12 has been unofficially retired and needs to be made official.
They should unretire all of these numbers immediately:
15 Steve Van Buren, HB/S, 1944–51
40 Tom Brookshier, DB, 1953–61
44 Pete Retzlaff, RB/WR/TE, 1956–66
60 Chuck Bednarik, C/LB, 1949–62
70 Al Wistert, OT, 1943–51
92 Reggie White, DE, 1985–92
99 Jerome Brown, DT, 1987–91
Ban?
BTW... Off topic and all but John Kruk getting enshrined in the Wall of Fame is flat-out stupid.
He's my favorite all-time Phillie and even I think a guy who played for five years doesn't belong anywhere near Schmidt, Whitey & Chuck Klein. Sorry, Johnny.
Kurk is just the latest in a series of dubious picks, in my opinion.
People got caught up in the emotion of Vukovich's death - he's on the wall of fame for being either a) a long time coach, or b) a career .161 hitter who played a total of 163 games with the Phillies.
To me, Darren Daulton's inclusion is questionable as well. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he was the leader of the 1993 team, but he only managed to play a full season (even calling a full season 100+ games) four times with the Phils (1997 would have been the fifth if he hadn't been traded to the Marlins). He hit over 20 homers twice, knocked in over 100 twice - next highest for the Phils was 57 (63 in season split with the Marlins) - and is a career .245 hitter.
They put people on the wall because of what they mean to the organization. Kruk was a big part of the World Series team and now he's a national sports figure who goes out of his way to speak highly of the organization. No brainer in my opinion. I though Juan Samuel getting put on the wall was iffy. He had a few good years and then he disappeared until he became the 3rd base coach.
Regardless, it's a wall with plaques on it. Fill it up for all I care. How many current Phillies will be put on that wall?
Rollins
Utley
Howard
Hamels
Lidge
Halladay
Ruiz
Lee
Victorino

They have a bye week 7, and they could save a roster spot by having him start the season on PUP and play in game 7 just after the bye.
So, what you're saying really makes no sense at all. Either he'll play sooner than that or the game after that. Game 6 is the absolute least likely scenario. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
I'll see you in hell

Right. Like this isn't hell.
My hell includes nagging women, Miller Lite, people overusing the word literally, and retired football jerseys. So yeah, I'm pretty close.

If you look back Kruk was actually a pretty awesome player for the Phillies. One of the best first basemen in franchise history.
I agree he was a good player. That's not the point. The point is that wall should be reserved for players who were great for at least a decade or longer, not for a guy who played for five years.

I agree he was a good player. That's not the point. The point is that wall should be reserved for players who were great for at least a decade or longer, not for a guy who played for five years.
So Ashburn, Roberts, Schmidt, Carlton, Klein, Ennis, Callison etc. are the only players you think are worthy to be up on that wall. It's going to be harder and harder to add to that wall considering free agency doesn't let players stay in the same spot for over a decade.
Yeah i was gonna say...that's gonna leave off Halladay, and possibly even Utley or Howard..
Get your Phillies bullshtein out of my Eagles bullshtein.
The Phils Wall of Fame is and should be a relatively easy goal to reach: They induct one person every year, and wall space is essentially infinite. Kruk absolutely reaches the level of Wall of Fame inclusion. If not him, then they'd have to put in someone from the 1890s, a beloved groundskeeper, or someone who worked in the box office for 50 years.
Retiring jerseys is and should be a relatively difficult goal to reach, on par with being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Perhaps even more restrictive than that. The obvious reason for this is that there are a finite number of one and two-digit numbers, and the team can have as many as 80 players during the pre-season. If the Eagles retired the number of every player that J loves, they wouldn't be able to field a pre-season team, and they'd probably be totally out of numbers within 3 years.
do you think donovan's vagina will be dry during his number retirement ceremony?

House would say it's never Lupus
This probably sounds bad...but will he still be able to play?
Randall Cunningham says that he wouldn't take $1 million to allow Smith to wear #12. Randall is the diggity.

Does Randall have a choice? I didn't know he owned that number.
He doesn't have to own that number to own that number.

Troof!
Atta boy Randall - good job.
they are both fools
Smith should take whatever number he's given and shut up. Randall should dial down the bitch factor and act like a man. No one is going to steal his legacy simply by wearing "his" number.
But see...they are jocks. Not many life forms lower.
Now an Eagle, Smith says Coughlin miscaluated comeback (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d821eedd4/article/now-an-eagle-smith-says-coughlin-miscaluated-comeback?module=HP11_headline_stack)
That's okay, Coughlin will just blame the punter.
The new one?
Sure, why not?
Miscaluated. That's quality editing right there.
QuoteDon't be surprised if Steve Smith becomes a Giant again

Steve Smith left the Giants for the Eagles in free agency this year, and he's expecting a rude reception from Giants fans tonight. But there's already talk that Smith could be back with the Giants again next season.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that people who know Smith think he'd love to return to the Giants after the season, and that he believes the Giants are the best fit for him.
The Eagles haven't been a particularly good fit for Smith: He has just 10 catches for 110 yards this season. So it's easy to envision Smith being one-and-done in Philadelphia.
And if he is, it's easy to envision him returning to the Giants. He was a perfect fit in their offense during his one full, healthy season as a starter, catching 107 passes for 1,220 yards and seven touchdowns. The Giants might be the best team for him.
Bet he won't fall down at 19 yards when he needs 20 up there.
Hoyda
The key is "the one full, healthy season". Get him the farg out of here.
how can anyone be bitter about this...he was leaving the eagles regardless wouldnt you rather him leave having sucked as opposed to him having a monster year and the eagles trying to lowball him and watching him leave
It's more about being bitter at the FO and another miscalculated move that backfired by those goons. I never thought he'd be back.
i loved and still love the move itself...low risk high reward....but that doesnt change the fact that they were never gonna resign him...if he sucks like he has then they dont want him.....if he had been great then they would have lowballed him
the one negative about the move was that you pay this gimp from new york four mil but cant cake off your own draft pick who has clearly outplayed his rookie deal?

Nothing really miscalculated about it at all. Low cost, low risk, high reward. Didn't pan out. It's not like the signed the guy to be a starter.

At least they weren't trying to pass him off as Jackson insurance.
thats chad hall isnt it?
Him or Casey Matthews.
Not bitter about the signing at all.
Bitter at him being a snatch last week.

Wait until next year when he goes off for 8, 150, 2td against the Eagles.
Thats a given.
He's already given the Giants some points this year and probably will again tonight too
if hes the secret agent who gets andy fired im cool with it

concur
Give him a key to the city if Reid gets fired?
It must have killed him to cross that goal line last night. He caught the ball and kept looking like he wanted someone to tackle him so he didn't have to put the points up against his beloved team.
Ha-I texted my boy before the game and said watch steve smith pull a tip drill when young throws at him.
