I'm curious: who really cares about the Olympics?

And I don't mean who on :CF cares.  I don't care if you care.  I want to know who out there actually gives a shtein about this circus.

This is definitely the worst olympics ever. Which is remarkable since they've all sucked since the original dream team.

I've never been a big fan of the Olympics but damn if it doesn't make you watch sports that you'd never give a F about the other 3 years 11 months in between.  "farg yeah curling's on!"
Title: Re: 2010 Winter Olympics
Post by: Sgt PSN on February 13, 2010, 06:45:48 PM
curling is terrible.  i think it's a game that was invented by janitors.  i don't really care about the olympics, especially in the "usa usa" aspect except maybe when it comes to basketball.  other than that, there's a few olympic sports i enjoy watching and that's mostly because they aren't everyday sports you can see here in the states.

for the winter games, i enjoy watching bob sledding, some figure skating and anything on skis.

summer games i mostly watch basketball and gymnastics

Olympics are not sports. Its entertainment programming. That's how the networks treat it.

Its intended and marketed at everyone from 10 year olds to sunmos diabetic racist grandmother.

I like speed skating. That shtein gets crazy sometimes...the short track stuff.

I also am female and love the drama that always surrounds ice skating. lol

Hockey and all skiing stuff (freestyle, jumping, downhill)

Summer is all about gymnastics, diving and swimming.

Canadian women's hockey team beat Slovakia 18-0 (http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-news/n/news/afp-news/ice-hockey--canada-crushes-slovakia-18-0-in-record-win_277240xC.html), but that wasn't the biggest score mentioned in the article...

QuoteDespite being outshot 67-9 Saturday, Slovakia knows what it feels like to be on the other end of a lopsided score - in one of their exhibition games leading up to the Olympics they beat Bulgaria 82-0 in Latvia.

ha...a goal every 44 seconds

QuoteGood ol' trash-talking, Olympics style ...
February, 16, 2010Feb 168:25PM ET
By Pierre LeBrun
USA Defeats Switzerland, 3-1, In Hockey

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- I wrote Monday of Julien Sprunger's courageous comeback from a broken neck in May to play in these Olympic Games.

Although I don't think the hit was dirty, it was Team USA forward David Backes who drilled Sprunger in a game last spring in Switzerland. So, as the Swiss forward told ESPN.com Monday, Tuesday's game against Backes and the Americans was very emotional for him.

Well, I couldn't help but notice a run-in between the two players in the second period, which was followed later by Backes yelling something to Sprunger as he skated by the U.S. team.

"He said something to the effect of, 'I'll do it to you again if you want,'" Sprunger told ESPN.com, in French, after the 3-1 loss to Team USA.

Yikes.

Backes, a tough but fair player, quickly denied he said that to Sprunger.

"I think I told him to keep his head up when he was running around a little bit," Backes said.

The St. Louis Blues forward, who scored a gorgeous goal in Tuesday's opener, said he respected Sprunger and the type of game he played and certainly doesn't feel good about what happened in May.

"I was pretty distraught that it happened the first time. You don't ever want to hurt anybody," Backes said. "It was a hard, finished check. He's a good player, and I'm glad he's back on the ice. We had a good battle today, we had a few run-ins, but I don't think I would stoop that low to dig my fingers and pour salt in the wound."

Good ol' trash-talking, Olympics style.

that leg injury was the biggest piece of propaganda since chris duhons rib

there literally was zero storylines heading into the games so NBC came up with the idea of that women either making up completely or greatly exaggerating a wittle boose on her shin

not only was there never a question whether she was gonna race there really was no doubt she was gonna win the gold

I caught maybe one glimpse of it and it was the half-pipe--not because I even care about snowboarding but I enjoy the flips and shtein

but these other events..cmon now. yaaaay...you can ski fast down a hill, hit a double axel to josh groban, skate in a mini circle on over-sized blades, throw 3 guys in a sled and tell them to duck...and best of all brushing ice the fastest with a broomstick and getting excited about it...christ

Watching the chick crash immediately after leaving the gate had the ladyfriend and I rolling for a good 10 minutes last night.

I can't seem to find a clip of it anywhere. If anyone finds it please post. Watching an Olympic level skier fall on her face within 3 seconds of starting her run was some good shtein.

the winter olympics are horrendous

I caught maybe one glimpse of it and it was the half-pipe--not because I even care about snowboarding but I enjoy the flips and shtein

but these other events..cmon now. yaaaay...you can ski fast down a hill, hit a double axel to josh groban, skate in a mini circle on over-sized blades, throw 3 guys in a sled and tell them to duck...and best of all brushing ice the fastest with a broomstick and getting excited about it...christ

You're a complete idiot if you think downhill skiing is bogus.  And ice skating as well.

because youre still dreaming about brian boitano behind your husbands back I should care about skating--stop yourself

i can certainly understand people not having an interest in skiing or ice skating, however when it comes to the winter olympics, they are probably the 2 most legit sports in the entire winter games as both require insane amounts of coordination, balance, strength and endurance.

colin cowherd made a great point the other morning on his show and said that most of the winter games are about money and science and many of the sports rely too much on equipment rather than athletic ability for overall success.  that's why you don't see poor(er) countries (african, jamacan, etc) succeeding alot in the winter games.  it's not just because their climate doesn't provide adequate training conditions, but they also don't have the money to spend on all of the equipment needed to compete in winter events.

That chick that won the silver yesterday in the women's downhill, Julia Mancuso, went to elementary school on Kauai and spends the off season on Maui.  All makes sense now.  Go Daddy!

QuoteJulia grew up in Lake Tahoe as the middle of three sisters, between older sister April and younger sister Sara. When she was five, her father, real estate developer Ciro Mancuso, was arrested and convicted of running a $140 million marijuana smuggling operation.[1] Her parents subsequently divorced in 1992, and her mother said that Julia "took everything out on the slopes."[1]

I think my wife has relatives on Kauai that have smoked $140M worth of pot since 1992.

It's easy for people who don't ski or don't have the interest in it to say how boring it is to watch.  I kinda get it.  They're wrong, though.

Lindsey Vonn's run yesterday was epic.  She was basically skiing on one leg and was still faster than everyone on the hill.   Amazing.

Didn't you hear? It's obvious the leg injury was a fake and the putting most of the weight on one leg was an optical illusion made up by NBC to drum up some interest in the Olympics.

Title: Re: 2010 Winter Olympics

um, not really.

a bocci ball is like 10x smaller than those giant hockey pucks is that they slide in curling.
once a bocci ball is tossed no one can do anything to alter it's course and speed.
bocci ball can be played anywhere and is great for family reunions and bbq
bocci is not an olympic sport, nor is should be.

bocci is horseshoes for whops.  curling is for janitors who can't ice skate or play bocci.

wow, talk about over analyzing.

Point of Bocci: get your bocci ball as close to the black ball as you can. If you have the closest, you get a point for each ball of yours that is closer than the opposing teams closest ball.
Point of curling: same. substitute "center" for "black ball" and "stone" for "bocci ball"

Of course there are rule differences and variations.

not really over analyzing anything.  there are similarities in the scoring methods, that's about it.  but the fundamentals of the game are drastically different.  not to mention that 1 is slow and unwatchable and the other is a great way to spend a sunny afternoon with friends and family.

neither has any business being an olympic sport.  the fact that someone can actually win a gold medal in curling seriously takes away from the significance in winning an olympic gold.

and its not great hockey....it might be great theater if youre into that flag waving stuff...but the hockey is rag tag...as is expected since these teams got thrown into a blender approx 72 hrs ago then poured onto the ice where they are expected to play great hockey?....not gonna happen

its hilarious, as Matty said, easily the best game in years, and IGY is sticking to his guns  that Olympic hockey sucks.  Every game has been good so far, shtein Norway vs Switzerland was great.

i flip to it and try to watch but its so bad...look i understand people loving the olympics for what it is...its not my cup of tea but whatever...but dont try and say this is great hockey cause its not even close...if that game last night was flyers pens in the playoffs no one would be saying a word today...

its all about the underdog americans beating the canadian machine...and i get that and totally understand it...its why people like matty who dont watch hockey get into this...its why 72 year old women from arkansas watch...the GAMES might be great to some but the HOCKEY isnt

now the canada cup was classic hockey...that shtein was unreal

Thanks to Sweden shutting out Finland late last night, USA is the #1 seed in the tournament and gets the winner of Switzerland/Belarus while Canada has to face Russia in the quarterfinals, so one of those teams is guaranteed to leave without a medal.  ha

its bad hockey...because youre to young to remember great hockey is not a fault of mine

didnt attack MA just pointing out the appeal of the olympics and to say that because the attraction of the event is great does not make the play great....its similar to the ncaa tourney now...the event is much better than the actually play

you cant in a couple days just toss together an entire team and expect great hockey...then on top of that you had all these guys just play a first half nhl schedule that had 60 games crammed into four months....its just not a recipe that allows for great play

what it can lead to is a great tournament...its why the swiss can take the canadians to a shootout and america can beat canada

its not fun for me cause i have no rooting interest...its not part of a larger season that includes divisions and standings and stuff...in the end i just dont give a farg about any result in this whole tournament...really the only thing i want is for ovechkin to become paralyzed but im not gonna watch the games for that

i'm 41 and do remember old time hockey and last night was a great game.  it had just as much to do with the game as it did with the event and it will only get better.

i get it though, you don't like it. that's fine but i question why you spend so much time on a message board trying to explain your opinion on something you could care less about, its very contradicitive and seems unproductive.

@ igy

which is exactly my point. you claim to like hockey and as a fan of the sport i cant see why you wouldnt want to watch that game. im not a fan and i wanted to. in fact the game, which was hidden on msnbc, got better ratings than game 7 of the cup finals (8.1 mil to be exact, over 10 mil in canada which i believe makes it the highest rated event ever for them and really kind of funny that they lost to a country that likes arena football better). that says it all right there. the 56 year old ladies in sioux falls were watching skiing on nbc. so it was people who like the sport and finally had a reason to watch it. and actually looked hard to find it on a freaking left wing news channel.

@ rome

what? its a term like The Way Things Used To Be is. like there is no difference between the canada cup and olympic hockey other than the absence of commies which to be fair made it 1000000x better.

the rules are essentially the same but the main differences are that olympic hockey doesnt have season or a team from philadelphia and half the participants would rather be club hopping in prague than be playing hockey

Olympic hockey has way more national pride but otherwise it's a bunch of exhibition games with prizes.  I get what igs is saying about not liking all hockey though (I don't care about Frozen Four or any of those independent Canadian junior leagues or anything and I'm not the only one), but it's that way for all sports.  MLB fans usually don't care about college or minor league baseball, and there's about 20 people that watched the UFL......
Title: Re: 2010 Winter Olympics

international competition > everything else outside of epic rivalry games

problem is only 2 events (olympic hockey and world cup) are the top of the mount for their sport. the world baseball classic will never work for a variety of reasons, and as of now a the usa basketball program is untouchable and too dominant. and no one else plays football.

so thats why you see increased interest for those 2 events cause they beat any nhl game, regular season or playoff, and any soccer game, mls or champions league.

In Soviet Georgia born and raised,
On the Ice Luge is where I spent most of my days
Chilling out, luging, relaxing all cool
Taking Russian hostages inside a school
When a couple of Reds, they were up to no good
Drove Russian tanks into my neighborhood
One separatist movement and my mom got scared,
And said "Your going to Vancouver to catch mad air"

I waited for my start and when it came near
The course said "Fast" and had a concrete barrier
If anything I could say, that this track was rare
But I thought nah, forget it, Nodar, catch air

I slid up to turn number seven or eight
And i yelled to my trainer "comrade, its hard to Steer"
Flew into a wall and i was finally there
Killed myself while trying to catch mad air.

The jingoistic fraud fan.
Or the person rooting against the US out of pure spite for a demographic of their own country.

i wont suffer and no one in MA will. this tournament has been fun and its been great hockey. the fact is its unquestioned better hockey than what we see in the nhl and more entertaining than your basic red wings/oilers game. the nhl sucks. they have 20 games and 10-15 teams too many. they have like 2 interesting players. hockey is a great sport and decent on hd and it deserves better. and thats where the olympics come in.

I love everything about this team so far.  They play their guts out from start to finish.  The goaltending has been unbelievable.  The offense has been opportunistic and fairly competent considering the level of opponents they've dispatched.  The defense has been outstanding.  On and on it goes...

Not quite sure why anyone would find any reason to hate them but whatever floats it, I guess.

you hate hockey...everyone knows it and has commented on it one time or another...this is the case no matter how hard you try and usa it up over the next few days

right. i hate hockey. you know my thoughts better than i do. go watch weather data you stupid nerd. you SUCK at fantasy sports. bwahaha.

my utter hatred of the nhl gets confused with my general basic interest of the sport.

i dont hate the game, i hate the league. olympic hockey = great. world juniors, college = passable. nhl if they got rid of bettman, 10 teams and 20 games = goat.

the only thing i like about olympic hockey is that every 4 years i get a 2 week break from the nhl.  hockey, in all forms, is unwatchable for me pretty much until playoff/stanley cup time and if the flyers are in then i'll dust off a flyers jersey and support the home team.  that's about as far as i go.

its has no fighting not less....of course the nhl has less than one fight per game so really there is no tangible difference

in theory the olympics should be better hockey because its the best players...unfortunately that gets cancelled out by the fact that the players are worn out by the time they get there and have very little time to practice together...plus the inclusion of countries like germany who arent as good as a minor league hockey team

when it comes down to it the olympic hockey is only better than the nhl if you get into the patriotism thing...it gives you a huge rooting interest which is fun

god forbid people should support their country. you essentially revolve your entire existence around 4 teams most people a. dont know exist and b. dont give a shtein about. yet its stupid for people to casually root for a hockey team from their own country while you twiddle thumbs, counting the days until the flyers take on the lslanders for the 30th time this year or get an exciting once-every-three years matchup with the dallas stars.

btw fridays game is set for 3 and will be live on nbc in the entire country plus online. i assume its the same for the medal round game. and it only took them 2 weeks to figure that out.

i agree with the lil guy though.   This Olympic product is 1million times better than what the NHL has to offer.  The reffing has been better, the play has been better, and the presentation minus NBC's continual fargups has been better than what VS produces on a weekly basis.
Title: Re: 2010 Winter Olympics
Post by: Rome on February 25, 2010, 07:38:22 AM
There's less thuggery and more skill involved.  Add hyper-patriotism to the mix and you're going to have a better product than the NHL.

I love the Flyers and will watch them whenever they're on, but when the U.S. is playing well in these tournaments there's nothing better in the hockey world.
Title: Re: 2010 Winter Olympics
Post by: ice grillin you on February 25, 2010, 07:52:43 AM
lol...why would you even compare a two week tournament to an 84 game regular season...thats like saying the stanley cup finals are so much better than the nhl regular season

same thing with the skill and "thuggery"...you have 90% eurotrash playing in a  tournament where physicality is frowned upon...what do you think is going to happen

again tho the skill is overrated...its better than the nhl cause it doesnt have nhl 3rd and fourth lines involved but its not nearly as high as people think it is...people dont even watch the games but are like pavlov dogs and just robotically repeat how epically high the play is in the tourney...shtein before it even starts people are like olympic hockey is so skilled...newsflash: no it isnt

and if you dont like thuggery i suggest you pack your cowbell move the hague put on your lily gaudette boots mock neck turtle  nordic sweater and viking hat and root on some skillful europeans

And they are on in the US, NHL Network.

My buddy's bro works for a company that does advertising for the NHL.  Apparently Team USA's jersey is beyond impossible to get, something like 200 were made by Nike, and my boy is getting one.  Probably getting Kane or Parise.  I hate the Devils, but Parise is just a stud.

heard this on cowherd's show this morning...

there was a german speed skater who didn't qualify to race in the 1500m (i think) but was made an alternate so that in the event that another skater (from any country) drops out of the race, he could step in.  about an hour before the race, some italian dude dropped out for some reason and when officials tried to get in touch with the german guy, his cell phone was turned off and went straight to voicemail.  he finally got the message about 17 minutes before start time and was therefore unable to get to the track in time.

Speed skating is like playing offensive line.  Just like you can call holding on every play you could call interference during every race.

Those blades they skate on are mind boggling.

Not taking offense, just pointing out fact. Not to mention I'm as far from middle america as you can get without getting wet. Which proves that you are an ignorant racist who groups people and labels them becuause of your meaningless opinions based on nothing more than geography, political party, or skin color.

Crosby: "Everyone saw the way the game is supposed to be played the last couple weeks"....as in the bare minimum physicality.

I hate him more than any athlete right now.

I like the excitement and shtein of the Olympic games but hockey without the physical aspect is just not hockey.

munson - what the hell are you talking about?    that game was extremely physical.  there was banging all over the place.   good solid intense action all over the ice.  what was missing was the thuggery which the nhl can do without.

He was talking about the whole tourny in general. The only reason why the USA/Canada game had that much hitting is because it was played between all NHLers, and that's how hockey's supposed to be played.

the game drew a bigger audience than any world series game since 04, any nba finals since 98 and was only beaten by the national championship and of course the nfl.

wow. and again, i doubt the 65 year old ladies in sioux falls who eat the olympics up sat through a 3+ hour hockey game.

of course they did...but they watch for the american flag...not the high level of hockey being played...i didnt watch it but im sure colorado detroit last night was just as good if not a better game than usa canada just without the hype pomp and pagentry

i have a hard time believing that a significant number of americans tune into the world cup just because it's the world cup.  the super bowl, yes.  world cup, no farging way.   at least with the super bowl, there's production value to it outside of the game itself.  there's the (now mostly lame) commercials, the half time show and a lot of, as you said, hype and pagentry.

the world cup has none of that.  maybe there is if you go in person but def not for the tv audience.

btw....i could be totally wrong on this as i've never actually tuned into a world cup game on tv.  for all i know, there could be nekkid bitches oiling themselves up and making out in a giant tub of jello for every transition to and from commercial breaks.

The World Cup is bigger than you know. It might not be important to non-Latino/Hispanic Americans....but it is the biggest tournament that segment of Americans and ask Budweiser or Miller or Univision how big it is.

It's a cool farging thing to go watch at a bar...particularly an English Pub or something like that...hot bitches wearing jerseys of all kinds (usually brazil)...and lots of drinking and a good time. Highly recommend it...the U.S. has a decent team...so go root for them...while checking out the eye candy.

on a world wide scale, yeah the world cup is probably the biggest sporting event each year.....or at least ranks in the top 3.  the world loves soccer.  the us doesn't and my commentary was us oriented.  yeah, i know that the hispanic community loves them some futbol, but i would imagine that if you take the entire country into consideration, soccer probably just barely cracks the top 10.

meh, i can go to plenty of bars that won't subject me to the awfulness that is soccer and still find plenty of eye candy in them.  and even if the bar's full of ugly bitches, i can most certainly drink until they start looking good if i so desire.

go to a bar during the world cup and youll run into a significant number of people who will tell you they arent really into soccer but watch the world cup...and im not talking about soccer bars they are crazy packed with soccer lovers...but just your average bar like a fridays or even a local bar that normally would never have soccer on will be showing world cup

legion bartenders will make a lit per your specifications and will charge you a buck fitty for it.

and they'll do it without putting soccer on the teevee.

result = legion giving fridays a cleveland steamer

no sir. it was people like me who will only watch their local team in a big playoff game. because thats the only time we can possibly get into hockey with the nhl being the cesspool that it is.

soccer is a bit of a different beast. the world cup is the biggest tourney obviously and everything pales in comparison to it. mls is getting slightly better but its still a double a league and premiere league is on at 2 in the afternoon and 8 in the morning. so its tough to check the games out on top of seriously getting into an english league.

watched this in PR, and yelled at Canadians while watching.  Cole needs to really die a firey death.  We throw it around a lot jokingly, but he really needs to die in a hellfire screaming to make the world a better place i'm sure of it, at the very least the internets.

And Munson, i think what Crosby was alluding to was that the "REFS" let them play the game.  There really wasnt all that ticky tacky shtein that goes on every game and the refs feel they have to get involved.  These refs though some NHL, realized they players were the game not the rules.  Holy shtein.

yeah, he and Campbell have all but forced out the older guys who refused to change how they call the game.  See this year Kerry Fraser being forced to retire.  The best part is how great the olympics were with minimal penalties, and then you go into the nhl games, and you see 10 penalties called.  Well done Gary

QuoteReebok Canada is offering a $10,000 reward for the return of Olympic hockey gold medalist Sidney Crosby's stick and glove, which disappeared after he scored in overtime to give Canada a dramatic win over the U.S., the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported Saturday.

After Crosby scored the winning goal last Sunday, the Pittsburgh Penguins captain exuberantly flung his stick and gloves into the air .
