Any laptop...and he'll order it for you today.
I have a laptop with XP and am backing all of my stuff up on an external HD. Also syncing my Outlook and OE mail on it.
Now, what do I get?
I need about a 14-15" screen, ability to use both on my desk (home office) where I can dock it and use it with my monitor, mouse and keyboard (not looking to spend more money for extra stuff like wireless everything)...and also have it be pretty easily portable as I do some travel for work via train.
I figure Mac is out because I have to get all of my XP stuff onto the new computer...and the learning curve there...don't really have time to start really learning a new computer format, although I probably would need to with Windows 7 anyway?
Ugh, I'm lost. Some help would be much appreciated.
You can always get a MacBook Pro, and set it up to dual boot either MacOS or Windows. Just sayin'.
ok, so tell me more....tell me the pluses and minuses of doing that....
I have a Toshiba Satellite something. Good enough for porn. Good enough for me. Hope that helps.
We just kicked the tires on all major vendors of laptops looking for a replacement for our current machines.
Looked at the usual vendors - IBM, Toshibia, HP, Dell, etc.
In the end we went with HP.
Excellent product - solid, reliable.
Hope that helps.
DO NOT get a toshiba satellite. i think i've posted that before on here. both my sister and i have both had catastrophic problems with them. there was even a class action lawsuit floating around.. and the final payout was another year of warranty.. or like 100 bucks of toshiba credit. and their customer service was terrible. it still doesn't work, and i've given up on it. easily the worst experience i've had with anything.
i've been using an apple, and their alright.. but i don't see whats so much better about them. sure they don't really freeze or anything but i can't say i really had that problem after i got a normal working computer.
Work bought me an HP Elitebook, its a beast
make sure whatever cpu you get loads up spankwire.com fast. cause they have loads of incest and taboo videos on there that are SUPER HOT

The plus is that you get to play in both worlds. The minus is that you need to buy a copy of Windows, and you need to know a little about doing fresh installs. But the Mac hardware is pretty nice, and at least a while ago, it runs Windows faster than most PCs.
The cost is often prohibitive, but if your employer is buying, that's not a problem, right?
HPs Compaqs, and Gateways are the worst manufacturers. That's a fact.
The Mac is really the way to go, you can load XP/7 on it and use it as training wheels until you are comfortable with the Mac OS. If you are just too concerned about the learning curve, Dell is usually the best option.
I am not too worried about the learning curve on a new computer, but learning a Mac....but wouldn't Windows 7 be something I'd have to "learn" anyway?
My concern is are there things that I'd have to get rid of (apps, files, etc) that I have now if I eventually make the full switch to Mac?
I'm a sucker for Sony Vaio's. Mine have been fast as shtein, ultra-reliable and now the new ones come with Blu-Ray players.
I'm getting a new one for my wife for Xmas.

Yeah, that's what I am getting rid of. Sony Vaio #3. They've been a complete and utter nightmare.
Has anyone ever heard of these?

i'm sure someone already posted it but i'm too busy/lazy to read the responses.
if you want an apple, get an apple. they not only have ms office available to use with the apple os (snow leopard i believe it's called) but you can also install a full version of microsoft windows onto your mac. in a nutshell, you can literally divide your hard drive in half and run apple stuff on one half and microsoft stuff on the other half. or you can adjust it and make it a 70/30 apple/microsoft ratio or whatever suits your needs. and it is as simple as point, click and drag to make it happen.
i've been tossing around the idea of going to mac in the next year or so when i'm about ready to make a computer upgrade and there happened to be an actual apple rep in best buy the day i was giving them a look and dude showed me all types of crazy shtein that those things can do. and it's so farging simple and user friendly.
so if you don't have to pay for the computer, you'd be nuts not to go for the apple.
In all seriousness, I wasn't kidding about the Vaio's. I've never had a single problem with them. Sorry you've had issues with them, PG.

funny because i've had a toshiba satellite for almost 3 years now and haven't had a single problem with it (other than the fact that vista takes up over half of the hard drive). the computer itself has been very durable though. no complaints from me.
still, my next computer and laptop will likely be a mac. just gotta pay my car of first. :)
You can bring mostly everything(files) over to a Mac. Mac reads both. PC reads PC and thats it. If your going to run windows on it, make sure you do it right when you get the computer, because you have to reformat your hard drive and partition a portion for windows. Or you can order your Mac with it already installed for extra $. You'll love the Mac
I'm so tempted. Really, I am.
Here's another thing...the vaio I have now, i am sending it in to Sony and they will replace it with a refurbished unit. The one i have is no longer made, but they'll send a comparable one. it will have vista on it, which sucks....unless I can wait another month or so and send it in and get a Windows 7 one. But it will be a backup for me (and if I ever lose this job, I won't have to give back the computer, although something tells me my boss wouldn't make me give it back...this is to replace MY computer, so....)

ditto. my old satellite was great. it actually did just crap out but i've had it for at least 8-9 years and was constantly downloading movies and music and porn. could probably get it fixed on the cheap if I bothered to try too.
I have an older toshiba, and it has worked very nicely for me. I got a smaller version of the same thing for my daughter (for college), and it worked well for a while, then its hard drive crashed, and it started having a lot of overheating issues. Mine still works okay when I use it, which is rare.
One thing that sent me to the Macbook was the construction. In most PC laptops, there is an air intake (and fan) on the bottom of the unit, which is supposed to draw cool air in. Well, many people place their laptop on...well...their lap. Or on a pillow, or bed, or something like that. And that intake gets blocked, and picks up all kinds of lint. The result is a computer that starts failing because of overheating.
The Macbook doesn't have the air intake in in the bottom (I think it's built into the hinge, on the back of the unit), so it doesn't suffer the same fate as the basic PC design.
haha Sus...one of the things the Sony corporate rep who I deal with asked me was....where do you typically use it? When I told them on my lap or the docking station at my desk (the port replicator MADE for it) they said that using it on my lap was a no no.
Hi...laptop.

my first laptop was a fujistu c-series lifebook and that thing was a farging monster. bought it in 01 and it still works great. well, it would be working great except that i decided to give it to my daughter this year when she came to visit for the summer and she left it sitting on the floor with the screen open and her brother accidently kicked it while they were horsing around and the monitor blacked out. it worked for a few more weeks but you would occasionally need to slap the back of the lid to get the monitor back up but then it blacked out one day and hasn't come back.
speaking of which......i tried plugging an external monitor into it but got nothing. i'm guessing that when you plug a monitor into a lap top you need to change something in the display settings first....which is kind of hard to do when i'm looking at a blank screen. anyone have any suggestions?
I'm thinking I'm not going to get the Mac. I'm really tempted, but I feel kind of odd asking for a $2700 laptop (if I get the one already with Windows built into it). The guy's already set me up with a Blackberry and whatnot.

do it. if you don't like it, you can just send it to me and i'll give you my laptop in trade. everybody wins.
seriously though, you should do it. you get to keep running windows, which you are comfortable with and presumably, what everyone you do business with runs as well. plus, you get to learn about mac and literally compare the 2 side by side with 0 money coming out of your pocket. how can you not be all over that?
which is better? Parallel Desktop or VMware fusion? The Boot Camp one needs a reboot to start up the new platform. These other 2 let you run them side by side.
And should i stick with xp since its what i know? or get 7?
macs are pretty user friendly.. i mean its not like its in klingon or something. and most of the programs your familiar with now are compatible.
and sarge your particular model might be ok.. but its one of the few.. toshiba had a $1.2 billion class action go through against them back in '99.. then of course for the class action on mine in '05 with the faulty mother boards.. over heating.. and the power cord problems to go along with the battery recall.. we got either a 1 yr warranty extension.. or 50 bucks toshiba credit. yeah. pretty sweet. maybe that was alot of money over in asia.. but it doesn't amount much to here. and why the farg would i buy another toshiba piece of shtein? anyways mines a m35x something or other. its sitting in my closet until i decide to try and fix it myself cuz they want $450 to replace the motherboard. the same motherboard they've "replaced" twice before. stay. away.
and their customer service really makes me love heroshima sometimes.
Well I put in a request for a 13.3" Macbook with the Windows XP already installed and Office 2008 as well. MacMall has some great prices right now on them. So for everything its about 1400 (after rebates).
All I'll have to get is a universal docking station for my desk.
I should have no issues using my current monitor and keyboard/mouse right?

i think when you compare the different "big name" manufacturers, they all suck. sony, tosiba, hp, dell, etc, etc. they all have their faults and they all have faulty products that somehow make it through quality control. you had bad luck with toshiba and because of that you'll never buy them again.....which is reasonable enough. but you could just as easily have bought a vaio and got a lemon as well. or you could have gotten a toshiba that worked great.
when in the market for a new computer, regardless of what brand you go with, i think it's pretty much hit or miss with all of them.
apple might be the exception because i've really never heard an apple user say they hated anything about it. the only people who really complain about them are pc users who are afraid of change. that's why they voted for mccain.

i do not believe you can use windows based mouse and keyboard on apple computers so you should probably tell the boss to open his wallet back up again.

USB mice and keyboards work fine. Bluetooth mice and keyboards work fine. You should have no problem.
Sus, any recommendations for a dock?
Space Dock?
I think there are a couple of docking gizmos, but none of them are made by Apple. In all seriousness, plugging in a couple of USB cords and plugging in a monitor only takes a few seconds, so a dock may not be necessary. For what it's worth, I have no experience with docks for the Macbook.
That said....here is one that looks interesting:

hahahaa, so my boss emails me this morning that he has a brand new (only booted up once) 17" Macbook Pro that I could have. Dude, a 17" laptop? That IS bigger than me! I have to lug that thing to and from NYC. :-D But it doesn't have Windows and Office on it so I told him that unless it has those, I can't use it.
So now I'm waiting to hear back again.
I'm using one of those right now, and it's really not as big as it sounds. Remember that this isn't a gigantic PC. It's still only about an inch thick. Maybe your boss can pick up a copy of XP, Parallels, and find somebody to do the setup. That might be a win-win opportunity for you.

I actually told him that in the email. That if he could get Office 2008 and XP/Parallels...it would be fine. At least those things combined are way cheaper than getting an entire new Macbook.
Tell him you know a guy that will take the macbook pro, free of charge.
Turns out, it already has XP and Office 2008 on it! All I need is Parallels and I'm set! :)
If it's set up to dual boot, then they two OS installations are on separate disk partitions, and you can't use Parallels. You'd need to reformat and reinstall the MacOS, then add Parallels, and then install the Windows.
ok, I guess I will see what I've got when I get it.
Sus, I might hit you up for some help if need be, ok?
Well, considering that I've never done any of the dual OS things, I'm not sure I'll be of much help. But I can give plenty of moral support. :sly
hahaha ok
I've dual-booted a Mac without significant difficulty for the past 3 years. You'll be just fine.
The biggest pain is transferring files from the Mac partition to the Windows partition (vice versa is easy). Hopefully you can minimize the amount you do that. Otherwise, things just kinda work.
The dual-booted version of Windows runs identically to how it would on a Dell. The most complex software works fine. When you start getting into Parallels, things get more iffy. I don't use it and have limited experience with it.
mussa is a mac guy i believe so he'd probably be able to give you some pointers.
Quote from: QB Eagles on December 12, 2009, 08:23:17 PMWhen you start getting into Parallels, things get more iffy. I don't use it and have limited experience with it.
This is my understanding, as well. Most things work with Parallels, but not all. The best option, if you can put up with it, is the dual boot.
Ideally she can migrate everything she does over to Mac. The Windows partition will hopefully just be there as insurance.
I only use Windows for games (ironic since there are still some people who think Macs are toys). It's exceedingly rare these days that I need to do something else I can only do in Windows.
well, he just told me to go ahead and tell him exactly what I want and he'll get it for me. Money no object, so not to worry.
Do I go for the 15.4 Macbook Pro or stick with the 13.3 Macbook?
Depends on whether you think that size matters.
ha!
Well, I get headaches easily....so I requested the 15.4" as I think it might be easier on my eyes/head...as I work 10 hours a day on it.
I'm so excited. I requested the XP/Parallels combo and Office. He's ordering it tonight and it should ship tomorrow.
one question....I use Outlook for all of my email...is it hard to transfer that to Entourage in Mac Office?
ok, another question....since I am getting it from MacMall, I am assuming I will have to do the install of Parallels/Windows/Office? It won't come preinstalled? How hard is that?
Muss, you might be making a trip to visit sooner rather than later. LOL
You should have gotten the boot camp setup. Usually when you order it with a specific config, it comes that way, already setup. Even if it didn't, it's ridiculously easy to setup, as you will find most things in the Mac world are.
Here is the mail bit: http://www.riches.com.au/articles/export-outlook-entourage.htm
why should i have gotten boot camp set up if i got Parallels? I had the option of BootCamp, Parallels or the vm fusion. I chose Parallels because after reading a ton online, it seemed that was the best choice.
No worries; you'll do just fine as is.

one question....I use Outlook for all of my email...is it hard to transfer that to Entourage in Mac Office?
First of all, before importing, I suggest you play around with both Entourage and the Apple Mail app and decide which one you like better. I switched from Entourage to Mail years ago and have never looked back. Apple's mail client is so easy and you know there will never be any issues with updating software, etc, because it's part of the OS. It's also quite powerful for a free product.
Microsoft is going to release a version of Outlook for the Mac late next year. (http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/08/13/goodbye-entourage-hello-outlook-for-mac/) It's too bad they haven't done that already, because people HAVE had issues moving their Outlook mail over to the Mac (either Mail or Entourage). Microsoft doesn't make it easy on you. It's certainly possible, though.
The easiest solution might be to use a cheap third-party piece of software. (http://www.littlemachines.com/) If you'd rather try it yourself see this website (http://www.entourage.mvps.org/cross_platform/win_mac.html).

Thanks for the info. So I guess if I want then, I can upgrade the office at that point. But by then, I'll probably have one of the current email apps down pat. Although, if I like neither of them, I can always get outlook later. Good to know.
Do both of the current mail apps have similar Outlook features like tasks, calendar, invites, etc?
Mail has tasks ("To Dos"). The calendar/invites is broken out into a separate app (iCal) but there's a lot of interaction with Mail built in there. I don't think this aspect is done as nicely as in Outlook, but it's there, and I think it can be set up to be compatible with people in Outlook.
Entourage would be a lot more familiar to you when it comes to those things.
so maybe I'll try out entourage and then upgrade next year if need be.
I'm just excited. He ordered it today, they said it will ship tomorrow. 8)
So yeah, the MacBook is pretty awesome. I am trying to get used to the keyboard. Is it just me or are the letters farther apart than on a PC laptop? LOL. I can also say that the edge where my hands/arms are when typing is not very comfortable. My PC had a rounded area where your wrists rest and this one certainly does not. I mean, ouch.
I have had no problems using the Mac os x so far. I haven't even loaded up Windows on here yet, although I will need to for some stuff, so I am glad I have that option.
This thing is so nice, I'm scared to take it out of the safe seclusion of my office...for fear of it getting ruined somehow. The display is absolutely gorgeous. My pictures have never looked so good. I moved all of my Outlook mail/contacts/calendar to Entourage using a program my boss gave me to use. Was simple as can be....cost him $14.95 to buy me the program, but worth it he said....for fear of my melting down when I couldn't do it right hahaha!
Thanks for your opinions everyone! I think/hope I made the right choice. :)
OK, after my first full day of working on the Macbook, I have to say, this was the best possible move I could make.
I LOOOOVE this thing. I mean, really, its amazing.
:yay
Glad to hear it. Welcome to the fold!
Thanks guys...I'm a total convert.
Now the opposite discussion.. I need a laptop that I'm paying for, and it needs to not break the bank for me. I wanted less than $500, but it looks like $700 is going to be the number.
Business, Internet, and some light video (pr0n) needs - no gaming. I'd like a 500GB drive, but that's probably overkill. I'd also like 4GB of RAM.
So far, all I've found that matches this is the ASUS UL30A-X5 - but until the other day I've never heard of them.
Any actual experience? Or suggestions on where I should look? Please don't suggest a Mac - I can't afford to shell out a grand or more on one.
You guys are no farging help.

I can't see your words...my eyes are so occupied with the amazing graphics and display on this machine. Sorry. :=)
i bet the gap in the strahan smiley is amazingly vivid and clear
oh, it is.
I'm playing games with the settings turned up. How you doin'?
You mean you can play games on a PC? I couldn't...mine froze. Well, then again, mine froze when I had more than one program running at a time. ;)
I'm playing games, listening to Pandora, and checking the board, and having a nice conversation on Ventrilo. On top of that, I'm right clicking like a motherfarger.
you do know that you can right click on a Mac, right? :-*
You can throw it as a frisbee, too.
hmm, probably not. Maybe a 13 inch one, but the 15.4 is a little big. :evil
That's what she said.
lmao
wow, look at pg being all uppity now that she's a mac user. i knew that upon purchasing a mac there was a transition process that takes you through the full spectrum of douchebaggery but i didn't realize it happened this quickly. i may have to reconsider converting to mac now.
hahha, no way.
My thread turned gay. I had to call them out on it. lol
They really speak for themselves. Once you experience how much easier and user friendly they are, there really is no going back. Until Microsoft creates a more stable and superior operating system there is no need for me to go back to PC. I used to have a PC when I was younger and it sucked, had issues, eventually just stopped working all together and then I went and bought an XBOX 360, reluctantly, and of course had/have issues. Next time it breaks I can honestly say I am done with Microsoft for good unless they somehow start making reliable systems/products.
I'm no trying to argue here, I'm just stating personal experience. PC people have a stick up their butts because they hate people talking bad about PC's. Carry on chaps...

i haven't had a single problem with my xbox as far as the operation of the system goes. games play smoothly, no problems with setting up internet connections or anything regarding the basic functions of it. once i tried to hook it up to my wireless network and sync it up with my computer to use media center and the dvr features, i had nothing but problem after problem with it. there are no clear instructions on how to set it up on the xbox website or the windows website but both websites have sections dedicated to telling you how awesome these features are and how easy they are to set up.
i called xbox tech support and asked them how to set it up and i had 2 different "techies" tell me that xbox doesn't provide those features and i had to have them look on the xbox website to see what i was talking about. after many painful hours of dealing with tech support and googling for suggestions i finally got it set up and could run media center through my xbox.....except that whenever i tried playing video files from my computer i kept getting an error message. so i googled the error message and found out that you need to download some microsoft video editing software and use it to merge your video file into 1 complete strip. i didn't know this but apparently video files are broken into smaller fragments and the only way you can stream them through your xbox is if you merge them together and create a new file. should be easy enough except that even small video files (<400mb) take about an hour to convert. and you can only do 1 at a time.
iti's farging ridiculous how much time i've spent on this crap.

me too. well, sort of. the thought has crossed my mind to buy windows 7 so i can run that instead of vista. i farging hate vista. going to try to convert to mac about a year from now so if windows 7 is superior to vista then it'd be worth $200 to run it for the next year. but yeah, no more microsoft computers, game systems or anything else for me ever again.

farg that, i'll argue. pc's farging blow. microsoft blows and why anyone would feel any shred of loyalty to microsoft is beyond me. they suck, their service sucks, their support sucks and bill gates' farging hair cut sucks. it's funny because everyone has a complaint about pc's in one way, shape or form and yet they keep buying it. but these are the same people who will go to a restaurant, get an undercooked steak and never go back because they didn't get what they paid for.
PSN...check out MacMall right now if you want. Macs are on serious blowout sale with the end of the year. Like huge rebates and such. It might be worth it to do it now while the prices are so low.

yeah, still out of my price range right now.
ok, just letting you know
i bookmarked the site though to refer to when i'm ready to buy since i'd prefer not to give my business to best buy either. they're like microsoft with a big yellow price tag. farging idiots.
They're awful. I went there the other day after getting the Mac and they were morons. The dude was this little, smug, rude little nerd type. I wanted to smack the glasses right off his face.
ironically, i got some really good info on the mac from best buy which is what made me decide that i do want to convert. dude knew what he was talking about, broke everything down in plain english, answered all of my questions thoroughly and in some cases, went into further detail than what i originally asked. but that's because the mac section actually had a dude from apple at the store that day so he knew his shtein. but the in-store employees are farging morons who know just as much about computers as i do. their geek squad is garbage too.

Resistance is futile.
So I got a new wireless keyboard/mouse....a Microsoft one and got a great deal. Works great on a Mac. :yay
Which mouse did you get? My Apple mouse sucks arse...go figure :-D
i got this one
http://www.staples.com/Microsoft-Wireless-Desktop-3000-Keyboard-Mouse/product_792426?cmArea=SEARCH
but it was on sale for $45.99 when I got it at Staples a couple of weeks ago.
eww it says MICROSOFT
yeah, yeah...but the logitech mice were way out of control and I didn't need that.

i picked this keyboard/mouse combo at k-mart a few weeks ago. was on clearance for $15 so i figured i'd give it a try and i can't really complain. the only thing i don't like is that the 0 on the 10 key is the same size as the other keys and i'm used to it being bigger. other than that, the thing works great.
you have a 10 key? all this time i've been typing 1 and then 0 like a sucker.
a sucker indeed
I've used a keyboard with a 00 key on it. I assume it was meant for Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Must have been made in Las Vegas. They're still trying to pass that off as a legitimate number.
Just coming back to rave a little more.
This thing farging rocks.
Anyone got any advice on a laptop in the 500-700 range?
Best Buy's got an HP for 499 but I just won a few extra hundred from poker so I was seeing what else is out there, HP or otherwise.
I won't be using it for anything spectacular, just your basic internet/pr0n/school work needs. I never got into computer gaming much.
I'd think that any of the netbooks would work pretty well, if all you were doing was surfing and writing papers. Look for a decent keyboard size (some of them are pretty tiny, and might be a PITA after a while), and get as much RAM as you can.
i've yet to hear anything good about netbooks from any manufacturer. no first hand knowledge, but i know several people who have them. and hate them.
Well, if you go in thinking that they're going to replace a regular computer, you'll surely be disappointed. Poorer performance, limited graphics, and the like.
I know a few people who have them for tethering to their cameras, and they seem to like them.

For Christmas, I got a Gateway NV53. Beats the hell out of the laptop I previously had. Get one of those and we can be Gateway buddies.
So hey buddy... I ordered one of those last night, and it should be here in a couple days. I'll IM you then.
Mine has not been a disappointment. I like it.

I was thinking of going netbook, but there will probably be a few times where I do decide to watch a movie/TV show online or something like that, making a movie with something off my camera or something....in which case I want a fully operational laptop that I know will have good speed.
I just came from best buy and the guy there told me they were putting out a whole new series this sunday so I figure I'll go back then and see what's out. He was really putting HP down too, saying they got bad reviews recently and that Sony/Toshiba was the way to go. Hm.
Sony sucks the big fat one. VERY expensive and they're shtein.
