Title: 2008 Olympics
Post by: Diomedes on July 06, 2008, 10:36:44 AM
The Olympics suck.  As they are currently conducted, they bear little resemblance to the games from which they are allegedly descended.  To everyone except (some of) the participants, they are about money.  The town that hosts them does it for money.  The sponsors do it for cheap brand exposure.  The television broadcasts for ad revenue.  The whole thing is disgusting.

The coverage sucks...nothing but one womanish sob story after another, with Hallmark background music. I won't watch any of the coverage, though I will probably read about it.

Worse, these Olympics in particular find me in agreement with George W. Bush.  He's defending himself for not boycotting, etc.  I agree with him.  He should go, and behave like a civilized person.  farg that dick from France, he needs to learn some manners.

The spirit behind the original Olympics prohibit the politicization of the games.  The whole idea was to drop that shtein for a little while.  Sure, China sucks balls in a billion ways.  But so do most of the dirtbag nations participating.  And that's not the point.  The idea is we stop fighting, literally AND figuratively, for good spirited games.  We don't boycott, we don't criticize, we just play, and enjoy.

Or, that's how it ought to be anyway.

Two points. Otherwise I'm in agreement with you.

1. I think it used to be more about bringing money into the cities. It's still sold that way to the people living in the cities that host the games, but the fact is that cities have been losing money on the Olympics lately. These days the games are more about a) feeding the egos of the local politicians who bring the games, b) providing taxpayer-funded welfare to local professional team owners and developers in the form of new sports facilities and "revitalization" projects, c) giving wet dreams to city planners whose aesthetic visions of urban living have been failing both in the market and at the ballot box. All of a sudden it's acceptable for them to unleash all of their favorite mass transit boondoggles, target their least favorite areas for immediate gentrification, and basically redesign the city according to their own ideas about how other people should live.

2. None of the above applies to China, where the CCP can order bulldozers into a neighborhood whether there's an Olympics on or not. Instead, this could be the most explicitly political Olympics since 1936, since China wanted the games for the same reason as Nazi Germany: to announce their arrival as a major world power, and advertise the superiority of their political system, their race, and their way of life. I agree that Western politicians shouldn't get up on their soapbox and further politicize the games, but the fact is these games have been blatantly political since the second they were awarded to China.

QuoteThe Iranian swimmer, Mohammad Bidarian, has refused to compete with his Israeli rival in the 100-meter freestyle event in Croatia.

Bidarian advanced to the semifinal in the 100-meter breaststroke event after he clocked a time of 52.25 seconds on Thursday morning.

Despite the fact that he had a chance to get an Olympic berth for his country, the 19-year-old Iranian national gave up the competition as he was grouped with an Israeli swimmer on Thursday evening.

Another Iranian swimmer, Mohammad Alirezaei, gained the first Olympic berth in swimming for Iran at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games on Thursday.

Ex-swimming star 'a bit upset' about not being in BeijingFrom wire reports August 12, 2008

Mark Spitz says he is being snubbed as Michael Phelps takes aim at his Olympic record of seven gold medals in a single Games.

Spitz, who won his seven swimming golds in 1972 in Munich, said no one connected with the Olympics - not the International Olympic Committee, swimming's world governing body, nor NBC - has invited him to Beijing. So, as of now, he won't be there.

Spitz told Agence France-Presse in Hong Kong: "I never got invited. You don't go to the Olympics just to say, 'I am going to go.' Especially because of who I am. I am going to sit there and watch Michael Phelps break my record anonymously? That's almost demeaning to me. It is not almost - it is."

Spitz, 58, a stockbroker, said he would have liked to present gold medals to Phelps.

"They voted me one of the top five Olympians in all time," Spitz said. "Some of them are dead. But they invited the other ones to go to the Olympics, but not me. Yes, I am a bit upset about it."

4 foot 9 + no chest = Little boy.

Shawn Johnson is neither hot nor legal. Very good olympian though. But as far as looks go, go to any nearby high school and you'll find 200 Shawn Johnsons.

and I don't know wtf is going on with those chinese chicks, but they look like they are about 8 years old... and it wouldn't surprise me if they were. Those chinese are up to some sick shtein trying to compete with the US. Pull kids out of their homes at 2 and send them to olympic training camps.

It was incredible.  I haven't looked for the frame-by-frame photos, but I've heard that the Serbians were satisfied with the outcome once they saw that Phelps did actually touch just ahead of their guy.

Still, what are the odds?  If Phelps were from Philly, that would have been the other way around.

The network said Saturday's broadcast was the most-watched Saturday show on NBC since Empty Nest, a Golden Girls spin-off starring Richard Mulligan, drew 31.4 million viewers on Feb. 24, 1990.

I can't figure out if it's a pro-China bias, or an anti-American bias.  Last night on the uneven bars, judges from the countries of the competitors aren't allowed to judge.. so no US judge, no China judge, no Ukraine judge, etc.  But yet the 12 year old Chink girl (that's right, I said Chink) was so obviously not as good as Nastia, yet she got ripped off.

I'd also like to add that Johnson has been a total star, even though Liukin won gold in the all around. She got farged left and right by the judges and still kept smiling and saying all the right things. Then to come back and win a gold in the last event. She's awesome.

The shtein is hitting the Chinese fan.

Costas just reported live that there have been documents uncovered that require additional investigation about the ages of the Chinese gymnasts.  Up to three of them could be proven underage, which would (if proven) strip them of their medals, and elevate the US team to an all around gold, plus Nastia to an individual gold.  The Chinese would be left with 2 bronze medals in total, if this is all proven out.

farg the Chinese.

They specifically changed the rule to stop what was essentially child abuse - forcing kids to damage their bodies and psyches long-term.  The validity of the rule could certainly be called into question, but unless it is changed, the individual teams are expected to play by all rules.
Title: Re: 2008 Olympics
Post by: Father Demon on August 22, 2008, 10:09:44 AM
In addition to what Biscuit said, it's the rules.  Sports, more than about anything else, have to play within the rules to ensure fairness.  Why disqualify a runner because his toes touched the white line? Why disqualify a gymnast because she went before the green light?  Why rule an acrobatic catch in football because he landed 2 inches out of bounds?  Because those are the rules, and they should be the same across the board.
Title: Re: 2008 Olympics
Post by: ice grillin you on August 22, 2008, 10:10:44 AM
so is it child abuse or an athletic advantage?

if its the latter does that mean the best american middle schoolers would beat the US olympic team in gymnastics?

if its the former then america and any other country not cheating should be embarrassed

In gymnastics, the lighter/smaller you are...less developed...the more advantage you have. Its easier to get height on your routines because you are lighter and smaller. Your body becomes MUCH different as a girl when you hit puberty (and its not just boobs, its the extra weight in the hip area and your body just changes immensely). There is a HUGE advantage to being a 14 year old compared to an 18-20 year old in women's gymnastics.

MOST 20 year olds would get waxed by a kid in middle school in gymnastics because of this.

Of course almost every gymnast in the Olympics (yes, there are some exceptions) has been doing gymnastics virtually nonstop since they were little kids anyway, and the sport of gymnastics has numerous championships and other competitions with identical routines for "juniors" who can be very young.

The minimum age limit is not a way to stop child abuse... it's a way to avoid exposing it too blatantly by having billions around the world see little girls (and sickly-looking late-puberty teenagers) working their asses off in the Olympics while being yelled at by insane parents and potentially insane coaches. Instead that crap is shuffled off to the junior competitions that aren't really watched by those not in the gymnastics world.

Bryan Clay Takes Decathlon Gold (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121943538638264359.html)

QuoteMr. Clay said that if he won a gold medal in the decathlon he would consider trying out a new sport to prove his mettle as a great all-around athlete -- namely, a tryout with the National Football League. Given his speed and his jumping ability, he thinks he could return kickoffs and punts, or have a go at wide receiver.

Though he says he has no idea if he can handle the hard hits in the NFL -- or hold on to the ball, for that matter -- there's no question he has the athletic prowess. In June, The Wall Street Journal met up with Mr. Clay on the campus of Azusa Pacific University, where he was being assessed by Nike's SPARQ, an athletic training outfit that tests football, baseball, basketball and soccer players. Mr. Clay was at the top of the charts in nearly all categories.

His 40-yard dash time of 4.38, which he did without practicing, was comparable to that of top NFL running backs and wide receivers, who train in the event for months to improve their times. And his standing vertical leap of 43.5 inches compared to the best NBA players in history.

I already like him more than Reggie Brown.

Cuban Taekwondo athlete banned fro life from all international events for kicking ref (http://www.nbcolympics.com/taekwondo/news/newsid=251304.html)

QuoteBEIJING (AP) A Cuban taekwondo athlete and his coach were banned for life after Angel Matos kicked the referee in the face following his bronze-medal match disqualification.

Cuban coach Leudis Gonzalez offered no apology for Matos' actions during the men's over-80 kg (176 pounds) match.

Matos was winning 3-2, with 1:02 in the second round, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent, Kazakhstan's Arman Chilmanov. He was sitting there, awaiting medical attention, when he was disqualified for taking too much injury time. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out.

Matos angrily questioned the call, pushed a judge, then pushed and kicked referee Chakir Chelbat of Sweden. Matos then spat on the floor and was escorted out.

"He was too strict," Gonzalez said, referring to the decision to disqualify Matos. Afterward, he charged the match was fixed, accusing the Kazakhs of offering him money.

"This is a strong violation of the spirit of taekwondo and the Olympic Games. The sanctions are the following and are effective immediately: Lifetime ban of the coach and athlete in all championships sanctioned by the (World Taekwondo Federation) and at the same time, all records of this athlete at the Beijing Games will immediately be erased," said the announcer, reading a WTF release.

In his first match, Matos defeated Italy's Leonardo Basile, then beat China's Liu Xiaobo 2-1 in the quarterfinals. But he lost to South Korean Cha Dong-min in the semis to land in the bronze-medal match.

"To me it was obvious he was unable to continue," Chilmanov said. "His toe on his left foot was broken."

Matos won the gold medal in this division at the 2000 Sydney Games, dedicating the victory to his mother, who died on the day of the opening ceremony. At the 2004 Athens Games, he finished 11th.

Matos' tantrum followed a day of confusion on the mats.

Earlier Saturday, China's double gold medalist Chen Zhong crashed out in the quarterfinals after initially being declared the winner. It was the first time a match result had been overturned since taekwondo became an official Olympic sport in 1990.

In other news, the World Taekwondo Federationis known as WTF.

Phelps acknowledges photo of him smoking pot (http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/9160136?MSNHPHCP&GT1=39002)

QuotePhelps acknowledges photo of him smoking potby Tim Perone, New York Post

Olympic hero and 14-time gold medalist Michael Phelps has been caught cradling a glass bong — a scene so potentially damaging to his career that his representatives allegedly tried to buy off the British newspaper News Of The World in an attempt to kill the story, the paper reports.

The winner of a record eight gold medals last summer in Beijing was spotted knocking back shots and chugging beers at a house party at the University of South Carolina in Columbia on Nov. 6, when a partygoer handed him the water pipe etched with red writing.

Michael Phelps "knew exactly what to do" with the bong, a witness said. (NEWS OF THE WORLD / FOXSports.com)

"He grabbed the bong and a lighter and knew exactly what to do," a witness said of the swimming superstar, who was in town visiting a gal pal and South Carolina coed.

"He looked just as natural with a bong in his hands as he does swimming in the pool. He was the gold medal winner of bong hits."

In a statement released Sunday to The Associated Press, Phelps conceded the authenticity of the exclusive picture published Sunday by the News of the World.

Phelps said: "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

The report in the British tabloid allegedly made Phelps' handlers so paranoid that they offered the paper an eye-popping deal to keep it from seeing the light of day — having Phelps pen a column for the paper for three years.

His camp also allegedly offered to host parties for the tabloid and push his sponsors to advertise with them.

"It's seeing if something potentially very negative for Michael could turn into something very positive for the News of the World," his spokesman, Clifford Bloxham, told the paper.

The scandal could be a major buzz kill for Phelps, whose agent, Peter Carlisle, has said Phelps could bag up to $100 million in endorsements.

The world-record holder's deals with Visa, PowerBar, AT&T Wireless and Speedo may all be in jeopardy.

During the two-day stay, the normally reserved Phelps was spotted partying hard with a flock of females.

"He arrived with a group of girls hanging all over him. Every girl wanted a piece of him and every guy wanted to be his best buddy," the student told the paper.

"He couldn't get enough of all the attention."

This isn't the first scandal for the golden boy, who was arrested in 2004 for driving under the influence near his home in suburban Baltimore, when he was 19. He was sentenced to 18 months probation and fined $250.

Phelps' spokesman did not return repeated requests for comment.

Seth Myers..Really (http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/really-michael-phelps/999101/)  Myers was so on point with this one.  I wish Obama would come come out and just Decriminalize the chronic as he's supported in the past.  Its BS these kids got arrested, not to mention because one kid tried to sell his binger on ebay and didnt clean it out
