QuoteEAGLES ADD KLECKO
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 14, 2008, 3:01 p.m.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles have reached an agreement on a one-year contract with free agent Dan Klecko.
Klecko has primarily played defensive tackle during his five-year NFL career with the Colts and Patriots, but the Eagles plan to move him to fullback.
The 5-foot-11, 275-pound Klecko has some experience as a fullback in short-yardage and goal line situations, and he caught a four-yard touchdown pass in last year's AFC Championship Game. Eagles coach Andy Reid apparently sees Klecko as the kind of athlete who could blossom on offense if he practiced at fullback on a full-time basis.
Klecko, the son of former Jets defensive lineman Joe Klecko, was the Patriots' fourth-round draft pick in 2003. He won two Super Bowl rings with the Patriots and one with the Colts.
I'm ordering up my Klecko jersey now. He'll probably wear 11, right?
This news makes my day, no sarcasm. He's a football player. Special teams and goal line run blocking just got better.
if they dont cut 50 draft picks again this year its 50/50 whether he even makes the team.....he might not make it anyway
go piss on someone else's parade scumbag
we're trying to have a good time here
He'll be cut before camp.
The Eagles barely use the fullback, but it's nice to have a wrecking ball available if needed.

i'm sure the special teams are much better off
here's his wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Klecko)
Quote...drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round (117th pick overall) in the 2003 Draft. Klecko has been a versatile player; he graduated from Marlboro High School, and then Temple University as an accomplished defensive lineman but was moved to linebacker in the summer of 2004.[1] He has seen time on special teams, and in his rookie season was a blocking fullback of five of the Patriots' nine running touchdowns. ...
Klecko was cut by the Patriots after the 2006 preseason....
Shortly after his released from New England, Klecko was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts.
With the Colts, he occasionally filled in for the injured James Mungro as fullback during the 2006 season. Dan scored his first career touchdown on a 2nd and goal 4-yard pass from Peyton Manning against the Miami Dolphins on December 31st, 2006.
He also caught a touchdown against the New England Patriots, his former team, to tie the game in the 3rd quarter of the 2006 AFC Championship game. The Colts went on to win that game. They advanced to and won Super Bowl XLI in Miami, FL.
He's got three rings.
Who needs a #1 receiver when you can add athletes like Dan Klecko?
PS: All kidding aside, I like the signing.
He's gotta be better than Cecil Martin....
I like it. I can't see him not making the team, either...
The Eagles are conserving roster spots by signing a DT and FB in one package.
Well he'd have to be considered an emergency DT, so let's hope he doesn't have to play any snaps at that position.

why....hes just insurance in case jason davis doesnt perform well in camp...if davis proves to be up to the task of being the fb then klecko is gone imo...will he make the team possibly but how can you not see him getting cut
He was good enough for three super bowl teams...sure he got cut but he's at a position where that happens. Do you really think Jason Davis is gonna be better than him?
I don't see it and I hope he works out. I like him.
In the bizarro world Reid lives in he's a good parent and Jason Davis is a starting caliber NFL fullback. That's why they signed a farging DT and are trying to shoehorn him in to a new position.
They'll bluster about "competition" and all that shtein but if push comes to shove, Davis will be the new fullback. It's how this crew operates.
yeah i do think jason davis will be better than him and i think the team expects that as well...but they also dont wanna go into camp with just jason davis competing at full back...the fact that they signed some weird hybrid fullback and not a real fullback tells me they have confidence in davis
this kind of reminds me of sav rocca last year vs dirk
except instead of a aussie rules punter trying to convert to nfl you have a defensive lineman trying to convert to a full time fullback...could he win the job sure...sav did...but i think its definitely far from certain
a simple bet, vigy, these are the terms: ten bucks says Klecko is the starting FB on opening day.
sure why not

Well, shtein, that's just a weekend's worth or Ripple.

You know, Office Space wasn't supposed to be that life-altering of a movie.
Good signing, I guess.
But I like Jason Davis better.
dont be a weasel phreak am i gonna win ten bucks or not
I am with Dio on this, I like the signing in that the dude is just a football player. To me though he would be better served as a situational type player and a solider special teams guy. I don't like the fact they are trying to make him strictly a fullback.

Quote4. I think I love the signing of Dan Klecko to be a fullback in Philadelphia. He's got the perfect temperament and physicality for it. I like how Andy Reid's thinking on this one. It's not the biggest move of the year, but if it helps keep the quarterback -- Donovan McNabb or Kevin Kolb -- cleaner than they were last year, it's a good piece of a 53-piece puzzle to help build the best team you can build.
That actually reduces my confidence and excitment (neither were very high anyway) about this move.
What is the "perfect temprement" for a farging fullback?
He likes poetry and will learn to play the guitar when he goes on IR.

add another white pawn to the board. IGY's burning....
I've known him since he was a kid. His father is a friend/acquaintance of mine. Anyway, he runs well for a bowling ball. What impressed me when he was younger was his closing speed on the pass rush. He played RB growing up (Pop Warner, HS) so he is not unfamiliar with having the ball in his hands. Real bright kid, who will catch on to the scheme readily.

white fullbacks are more than acceptable...almost encouraged...not sure about 280 lb ones tho
It's going to be hilarious yet infuriating when Reid/Morningwood call their favorite dump-it-to-the-FB play...
Meanwhile, back at the ranch....does this mean that those knuckleheads are willing to commit to the run? You don't sign a fat body FB who can do nothing BUT blow up holes unless you plan on running. But then again, this is Reid we are talking about.
I swear to you sonsofbitches, Klecko is going to win your little shriveled-up hearts.
Klecko won't be anywhere near 275 when camp rolls around. He'll be 260 tops and probably closer to 250. I don't know why and it's probably irrational optimism on my part, but one of these hairbrained moves of Reid's almost certainly will work out some day, and I think Klecko might be a player.
Phreak is a Texan. He doesn't have a heart.

I am a Pennsyltexan, than you very much. Not to be confused with the Pennsyltuckian people who reside between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
I'm not all that excited about the guy that couldn't beat out Thomas Tapeh either.
Let's just say I look at this FB position "battle" as more like a cripple fight.
True, but I thought he had a legit shot to beat out Tapeh in his first season but he then blew out his knee. He's smaller, but he can hit and runs hard.
Is this Billy Sampy's year to get in there and compete?
Better FB, Comatose Ritchie or DT Klecko
Keith Byars
Cecil the Diesel.
if davis cant beat out klecko at FB then he should just kill himself....
in fact two months ago davis would have given ten years off his life to have the starting fb released and then his competition for the job be a 280 lb defensive tackle who in order to win the job has to first lose 30 lbs then learn the position and then learn the offense
Quote from: ice grillin you on March 19, 2008, 07:57:56 AM

If Klecko loses the FB job I wonder if the Eagles would try him as a 4th DT

Are you farging serious? He was good at DT. What the farg is going on? Reid has lost it.
Um, no he really wasn't good at DT. He was good in special teams but that's about it.
He got good penetration and pressure on opposing QBs. He wasn't a monster, but for a 2nd string rotation guy he was quality. If he failed at FB, why put him back there?

this is again to prove how right Reid was. he gets flack this week about Klecko? so he will force him into the scheme even more.
I guess Reid didn't see the tape from the taterskins game. You know, they play on the goal line where Klecko got knocked 4 yards back into Westbrook. ::)
Yes, but Red said Klecko was surprised, not whipped or blown up.
Who is excited to see the 1yd pass to Klecko on 3rd and 4?
Well, at least he'll drop it instead of losing 2 yds.

*raises hand*
This is another reason why Reid must go though. Too many square pegs for round holes. How many linebackers have been brought in and then shifted around to different positions? Dhani Jones, Mark Simoneau, Omar Gaither, Chris Gocong. The best LBs we had under Reid were Trott and Carlos Emmons, a natural MLB and a natural strong side backer - and Reid let BOTH of them go!
Kimo > Laws and Klecko on run downs. farging trevor laws, klecko was decent on pass downs.
but i agree w/everyone else. reid has lost it and in addition he is trying to prove his stubborn ass right

No confirmation yet, but I read a thread on PhilaPhans that said the Birds have signed ex-Navy/Patriots/Dolphins FB Kyle Eckel.

QuoteEagles Sign FB Eckel

The Eagles solidified the fullback position Tuesday, signing former Patriot Kyle Eckel to a two-year contract. To make room for Eckel, the team released safety J.R. Reed. Dan Klecko, who started at fullback against the 49ers, will remain at fullback.
Eckel, a Philadelphia native, played college football at Navy and high school football at Episcopal Academy in Merion, Pa. While at Episcopal, where he was honored as a first-team all-city selection as a senior, joining Chicago Bears running back Kevin Jones in the backfield.
While at Navy, Eckel thrived in the Midshipmen's signature triple option offense. For his career, he rushed for 2,906 yards and 25 touchdowns, both fourth in school history, and he rushed for over 1,000 yards in both his junior and senior seasons.
Despite bouncing around training camps with the Dolphins and Patriots since leaving the military in October of 2006, Eckel saw his first game action in 2007, where he ran the ball 33 times for 90 yards and two touchdowns, while also registering 12 special-teams tackles.
Why keep Considine and cut Reed?
At least Reed can still tackle.
It's gotta be all about job creation
JR Reed, professional football player, cannot feel his foot.
They also released Jed Collins from the PS and signed OT Nevin McCaskill
JR Reed. :'(
Nevin. They signed a guy named Nevin.
Reed will be back as soon as someone on the coaching staff drinks enough to take Dawkins out behind the barn to shoot him.
so i heard they solidified the fb position.....cool
I lost my bet but I nevertheless relish the moral victory this excellent move delivers.
i'd rather have reed eckel than eckel considine on teams. our coverage sucks bc we got a bunch of athletic Hoydas. we need some head busters. we should give jason short a call in a few years, prime eagles target then.
Reed was wearing a BJ Upton jersey in the locker room yesterday and gets cut today. Purely coincidence but ha.
I should be talking to Dan tomorrow, if you want me to ask him something, go farg yourself.
Ask him how ashamed his father is of him.
Pretty ashamed, since his father really wanted a son.
Ask him how it feels to have mores sacks than Jason Taylor

It's not that shocking how much he gets mugged. He's a very good DE and teams do a lot to keep him in check. What is shocking is how rarely it's called, especially when he's the one getting victimized. Very weird.

But, should they advance Sunday, Ill be in Tampa - and should they win, Ill be back in time for the parade. I win.
I can't believe I'm reading about the Super Bowl parade in philly.........in the Dan Klecko thread. :-D
it would be a lot bigger deal if they were the ones breaking the drought
Stop it you motherfargers!!!!!!
Reading or talking about the possibility of a SB parade for the Eagles is killing me... it really is. Words can't explain how bad I want it to happen. Even though I know this thread ain't got shtein to do with if it actually happens or not... I get the shakes just thinking about it.
That said... I already told Mrs. Feva that I'm out if it goes down, I'm gonna cry like a bitch and to kiss the boys for me cuz I got no guarantees about coming back home.
Your ass betting end up in Philly if this actually happens...

Ass betting? Sounds intriguing.
Is there some smoke-filled back room at a deli where heavy, sweaty men are trying to yell over top of each other, money is changing hands, and somehow Feva's ass is involved?
Errands?
I type way too quickly for my own good. Especially on a place like CF where all mistakes are sure to be picked up on.
Not that I didn't appreciate all the talk about my ass while I was gone, but...
DH, no way in hell I miss that. Plans have already been discussed... and will be made concrete if they pull it off.
concrete plans on concrete field....thats hott
That was just for you babycakes...
So we have ass talk, igy saying hott and some babycakes being dropped.
All that talk is gonna get MDS hot in the pants.
