QuoteEagles installing new playing surface
By Bob Brookover
Inquirer Staff Writer
The Eagles will have a new playing field for their next home game, Dec. 2 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Head groundskeeper Tony Leonard recommended after Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins that the Eagles re-sod the entire field. Team officials approved the operation, which began yesterday. It marks the first time the field has received a makeover during the season since Lincoln Financial Field opened in 2003.
Including Temple football games, "we had four games there in a 15-day stretch and three in an eight-day stretch," Leonard said yesterday as he oversaw the operation. "We had a window of opportunity to do this and we wanted to provide a good, safe playing field. I made the recommendation after the game."
The field was an eyesore before Sunday's game and only got worse as the teams played in rainy conditions. Quarterback Donovan McNabb and safety Quintin Mikell suffered injuries during the game, but they appeared to have more to do with hits they took than any surface problems.
Leonard said that the Eagles imported 4-by-25-foot rolls of sod from Tuckahoe Farms in Hammonton, N.J., and that the installation would be completed today. The sod, which is 1 3/4 inches thick, is 15 months old.
"It is developed, and we can get it cut thick enough where it's not going to move," Leonard said. "I feel comfortable that the last three games of the season will be fine."
Leonard said it was not unusual for teams to re-sod their fields at this time of the year. He said Tennessee, Tampa Bay and San Diego have re-sodded all or portions of their fields in recent weeks.
The Eagles' playing surface is one of four DD GrassMaster fields in the NFL. Those fields are reinforced by polypropylene fibers, which are sewn vertically into the sod. Pittsburgh, Green Bay and Denver also play on DD GrassMaster fields, which are supposed to enhance the ability to have a natural playing surface in climates where the weather turns cold in November and December.
However, 41 of 48 Steelers players recently polled by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette rated the field as poor or fair, with only seven saying it was in good condition.
After the Eagles play their final three games of the season on the re-sodded field, Leonard said, the sod will be taken off and the DD GrassMaster surface will still be intact.
"What we'll do at the end of the season is remove the sod, and we'll still have the DD GrassMaster field," Leonard said. "The field will be covered for six weeks by the sod, and the Bermuda grass will stay alive because it's typically dormant at this time of year anyway."
Painted dirt?

This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. You can play four quarters on it in the afternoon, and get stoned to the B-Jesus belt that night.
Why don't they just put down real grass? Our winters are not that bad .....
"the field is in great shape"
"I have to put the groundskeepers in a better position to do their job."
Kneel before Sod.

just put farging FieldTurf in
Chewed up grass was never an issue at the Vet. Just sayin......
just chewed up cartilage
"Ahem... Sod's yours."

Ha. I know one of the owners of this place. Dude went to Stockton State College and got some lame degree and now he makes more money than anyone I know. For growing farging grass.
turf management is a major at penn state and because of the specialty, many of them get amazing jobs from it. a buddy of mine's brother runs the field at camden yards.
They should have kept the field dirt with some paint on it.
The linc, while overall is a dump, it was just starting to get some personality.

Eureka in the house!
Did anyone read any reports on how the field held up? It LOOKED like it did okay.
But I just heard Brian Baldinger just said its the worst field in the NFL by FAR.
(did he MISS the Steelers games?)
I thought the Steelers field was in really good shape this week, given the conditions in Pittsburgh on Sunday night. The Monday nighter two weeks ago was a full-fledged freak game, though. Easily the worst field conditions I have ever seen (maybe excepting some Vet preseason games).

Baldinger's a farging douchebag. The field looked excellent on television on Sunday. You didn't see anyone slipping and sliding. Quite the contrary. He just takes any opportunity he can to rip the Eagles, and although there's plenty to rip on, the field, at least as it played last weekend, isn't one of them.
Also - Joel... is John Betts the guy you know from Stockton? I went to high school with him in Ocean City.
what are you talking about romey...baldinger lives in philly and loves the eagles...have you ever heard him announce a game...its verbal fellatio...and hes on angelos show every week where he is actually quite good at analyzing them but angelo is always trying to get him to kill the team or the coaches and he doesnt bite
the thing about the field is a players poll where they ranked like 23rd or 24th in the league...clearly where one of the top valued teams should be ranked
I'm talking about the field after they did what they did.
When was this "poll" taken?
And Baldinger is an Andy Reid lover. His defense of him is sickening.

I know Phil Betts. I think they are cousins.
the field was an abortion again yesterday, players slipping all over the place.
pathetic.
when it rains. it makes mud. shtein happens. can't do anything about it.
temple needs to go play on a high school field though. thats just pathetic. the owners are that greedy to get some extra money from the 1000 temple football fans out there. please....
it didn't rain yesterday, until after the game

shut it.
I keep thinking MDS goes to Towson. It's Temple. Not Towson. Same difference though, I suppose.
Townson is in the DC area, which is super gay. Also they had the Jewish Jordan, Tamir Goodman.
Regardless if it rained or not before the game the ground here in lancaster has been wet since last wednesday when it snowed. it all melted friday and saturday and made a hell of a mess since then.
oh well, yeah, the field at the Linc surely has to be in the exact condition as the ground in Lancaster
yeah i would imagine a trailer park in lancaster probably isnt getting the same attention as a professional football field
for example they cover the linc field during the week in bad weather
Lancaster=Amish
Linc=Mormon
Coincidence?
what so they use a clear tarp to cover the field then? otherwise you can't keep it covered for more than a day or two because natural grass needs something called light to live
ummm they cover it up only when its raining
Mussa what the farg are you doing? You are carrying on a pointless argument in the most idiotic way I can imagine. It's like you're punching yourself in the face and can't figure out how to stop.
i keep my lawn tarped 5 days a week and its still going strong thanks.

Nice. Is your yard in Lancaster too?
my arguement is that philly gets the same damn weather as lancaster...its all rolls west to east here in case you didn't know. i work in philly and lancaster and if it happened in lancaster, its going to happen in philly. its been completley soaked here for over a week. they can't keep a freakin tarp over the grass for more than a few days or natural grass dies. so therefore the freakin grass at the linc has got to be wet and or damp period from the recent weather we've had thus leading to bad field conditions among other reasons. that is all. go farg yourselves
so how many full-time employees do you have working on your lawn care?
they also have a state of the art drainage system and a heating system in the field, along with a grounds crew
other than that, it's just like your typical front yard in Lancaster
well no shtein its got a draining system. i'd like to hear about this heating system though...so what it "heats" the grass so all mositure goes away? there is no way to keep natural grass completley dry. even if they tarp it, moisture will build and if its cold weather and you have a "heating system" combined with a tarp, there's still going to be tons of moisture(condensation) and moisture doesn't drain away all together it clings to the grass.
convince me otherwise and ill shut up
lol.....please stop mussa
Quotemoisture(condensation)
hahahahahaha(ha)
Give him a break, he's never seen the turf at Penn State. The guys at the Linc should be on their knees begging the Penn State turf-grass guys to give them a clue.
oh ok. typical mocking self defense. so how does this state of the art system work then? please explain this to me since i don't have a clue as well.
i'm pretty sure that, because of the unicorns, not much really has to be done to the magical linc grass.
The new ones have a massive layer of sand and gravel under the grass with plumbing underneath that. They actively pump the water out. The problem at the Linc isn't the drainage, it is the turf itself - they are trying to put all kinds of fancy hybrid grass-synthetic crap to help it hold together, but nothing beats a good thick root base.
I don't think I've ever seen the turf at PSU torn up. I've seen players get wet and muddy but the grass simply doesn't come apart. The truly amazing thing is the parking - thousands of cars parked on grass which also holds up amazingly well.

So the only way you will accept the fact that the Linc is different than your front yard is if someone can explain everything that is different and exactly HOW it's different? Haha(ha). Why are you hitting yourself? Why are you hitting yourself? Why are you hitting yourself?
You all need to get laid.

right i clearly said my yard and the linc are the same. i said the weather has been the same here and in philly: wet, damp, moist...sort of like your vadge(vagina) after reading my posts. calm down and stick a plug in it.

got ya. thanks for the info. i agree totally no grass is going to stay unless its matured well. i landscaped for 13 yrs so i know a little about this.
your right about penn state. ive been there more than the linc. the thing is they don't have another team playing there the day before though either, which helps.

Hoydas.
Wahh, it was slippery.
Its a wet farging grassy field. You slip. Wear the right farging shoes for wet grass.
Getting fake fields to protect Hoyda athletes from slipping on wet grass. Yay. ::)
thread over
the field was not wet...it just sucks and falls apart
but yeah, who cares if their best player who relies on quickness and cuts can't make a cut...DOESN'T MATTER!
Falls apart? Where? I saw slipping on wet grass. I didn't see it "Falling apart" anywhere.
There were no chunks of field coming off.
And sorry, did you see Westbrook falling while cutting and running anywhere?
Nope. Neither did I.
i saw many players falling down, including Westbrook a few times...
I saw MDS. It was farging weird.

Here's the real solution (http://www.greendaily.com/2007/12/11/driveways-become-grassways/) - all the beauty of natural grass, with the durability and injury potential of the vet.

another great performance by the field today...players slipping all over, any time someone changed direction huge mud divets flew up...good stuff

awesome! :-D
The play where Curtis caught the first down, turned, and then spun his wheels like Wiley Coyote was especially hilarious.
They're just as arrogant about their precious natural grass field as they are about everything else concerning the organization.
The proof is staring them in the face yet they refuse to correct the problem.
Super.
my favorite was the screen to westbrook by the goal line and Andrews started to turn to find a blocker and fell like he was running on ice
Per the minister of propaganda:
QuoteI prefer the natural grass and the players prefer it and that is what is going to stay. It's part of the game if you want to have a grass field.
Awful.
yeah, the players prefer it, that's why they voted it as one of the worst fields in the league
I wonder if mussa slipped on his yard at all yesterday. Figured we would have heard something about that by now.
Ahaha. Nothing ever gets forgotten in this farging forum.
Ever.
just took the dog out and the conditions are wet, FYI, I did almost slip

so wait if you have real grass you just have resign yourself to the fact that the field will be a parking lot for half of every season...wtf?
Evidently, yes.
