This probably falls under the 'who gives a shtein' category for most of you, but I've been a big Social D fan my entire life:
QuotePLACENTIA, California (AP) -- Brent Liles, a former bassist for the 1980s punk rock group Social Distortion, was struck and killed by a truck while riding a bicycle, authorities said Wednesday. He was 43.
Liles was hit on January 18. No immediate charges were brought against the driver.
Liles, who was from Fullerton, joined Social Distortion in 1981 and played bass on the band's "Mommy's Little Monster" recording two years later.
Fed up with turmoil inside the group, he and drummer Derek O'Brien quit the band during a New Year's Eve performance in 1983.
Liles went on to play with other punk groups such as Agent Orange.
That's farging awful. Driver will likely get a nominal fine and walk. Our laws don't give a damn about bicyclists or motorcyclists. You can kill someone on two wheels, claim you didn't see them, and walk 99 of 100 times.
Good band.

same here. I know I had him on a list and took him off...for Ferlinghetti if I recall.
the NYTimes Vonnegut obit ends gracefully by quoting the final lines from one of his own poems, "Requiem:"
Quote
When the last living thing
has died on account of us
how poetical it would be
if Earth could say,
in a voice floating up
perhaps
from the floor
of the Grand Canyon,
"It is done."
People did not like it here.

i would have put money down that i had him too.
Damn, that sucks. Vonnegut was a favorite of mine too. Well at least we know he's on some far distant planet shagging a movie star in front of some aliens. Haha
Like Valerie Perrine?
When I saw his name on the death wire, I was happy because I knew that he was on someone's list, and anytime there is a score or a change to the site's content I get more hits.
Then I checked, and no one had him. It sucked.
It's no one's fault but your own.

Quote from: Susquehanna Birder on April 15, 2007, 12:15:45 AM
So DH...what was a bigger loss, Don Ho, or Brudda Iz?
Tough call. Braddah Iz was the modern Hawaiian sovereignty cause messenger. He has a following like you wouldn't believe - even 5 years after his death. "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" put him on the national map - from Kellogg's Rice Krispies to Meet Joe Black, that song gets incedible international play. He was popular in the early 80's with a group called "The Makaha Son's of Niihau". They were very popular in the islands. Iz went on his own in the late 80's. Iz was a big braddah, litrerally and physically, he weighed in at 400+ lbs.
Don Ho was the 60's - 70's Las Vegas type nightclub act. Like Geo said, his grandmother used to sing it to him. He really didn't have a good voice but he was just one helluva a crooner. Anyone over 50 who has visited Hawaii will get very emotional when you mention Don Ho. Guy owned Waikiki for 20 years - sold out every night. For you younger souls catch the Brady Bunch episodes in Hawaii. Don Ho teaches Bobby and Cindy how to play the ukulele. His daughter Hoku Ho had a few big hits on the teeny bopper lists.
I was fortunate enough to see both performe live. Iz at the Pro Bowl believe it or not and Don Ho at my classmates father's funeral.
This is a great tribute to Ho - only 2 minutes. Ihave to admit I got a little choked up watching it.
http://honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070415/VIDEO/70414008
Thanks for the input. I was never a big fan of Don's, but I appreciate what he did and the acclaim that he drew. Iz seems to have been more of a purist, but maybe that's just my under educated bias.
I recently put Iz on my iPod, admittedly starting with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." It's been played to death (heh), but it is still a great rendition of that sone. I like to listen to more than one song from an artist, so I've been listening to his other songs, as well. He actually reminds me of my late BIL, and there's a tone in his voice that just strikes a melancholy nerve.
Seemingly every haole in the world who vacationed on Oahu saw the Don Ho Show. I was one of them. I was 16 and stayed at the Princess Kaiulani in Waikiki and was practically kidnapped to go see his show. I went kicking and screaming but ended up enjoying the show quite a bit.
RIP, Don.

Another wrestling related death. Shocker.
TMZ has learned more about the deaths of WWE wrestling superstar Chris Benoit, his wife and son -- and the information is extremely disturbing.
Several Atlanta-based law enforcement sources have told TMZ prior to confirmation from the coroner's office, initial reports say that Benoit strangled his wife on Saturday, then smothered his son in his bed a day later. According to sources, Benoit then hanged himself in a weight room inside the family home.
A police investigation is ongoing.

A. The WWE is now and always has been completely about putting on a show and getting ratings and dollars.
B. The details of the family's death weren't starting to get out until after the show went on the air.

Waiting doesn't factor into the equation when there be cheddar for the taking.
Benoits wife was found in the family room with her hands and feet bound. There was a bible placed by her side. The son was found in his bedroom with a bible by his side, both were said to be suffocated. Benoit hung himself in his downstairs weightroom. Prescription drugs were found on the scene, supposedly legal.

Unfortunately, the wikipedia page for Fred was updated.
But it used to say he was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer in 2005. That gave him less than a 50% chance of 2 yr survival. And he was already 77.

Just when I was happy that I had gotten two scores in two days with you getting none.
I've come to view that game as a straight up donation. There is no way I'm ever going to contend because I don't spend the time researching the sickest so-called celebrities. Stan Zemanek? Sure, he counts by the rules, but he and dozens of other names submitted are so obscure that it reduces the game to a contest of trivia and trivia research.
Yeah, really. I also don't have access to the "who-has-cancer hotline."
I do, but I decided to keep it all above board and root for celebrities I hate to die. The way God intended.

Next year's rules will hopefully fix that. I'm not faulting MMH at all - he plays by the rules that we all do, and I know he uses publicly available information. Congrats to him for doing his homework -- it should pay off. But, as this game gets bigger and bigger, the committee oversight gets more and more difficult. I'm looking for a cut & dried, black & white way of saying yes or no to celebrity names. Always open to suggestions.
BTW -- no matter who is winning, I still get a thrill out of hearing who kicked it and if I may have scored some points. That never gets old.

I dig this score a lot. Not only has she been on ly list for 7 years, it also moved me back into second place. But looking at it now, I have to wonder "what the hell was I thinking??" by ranking her only 14th?? I mean, she was a 105 goddamned years old.....
well, she punked your ass for the last seven years, when you thought 98, 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, and 104 was old enough. Ruby Muhammed is going to live forever, that's why I dropped her from my list this year. If she's alive for next year, she goes back on, but I'm not gonna chase a score year after year just because the person is old.

How sad would you be if Dakota Fanning and Suri Cruise died on Christmas?
Sad and stroking-inducingly-irate are very different emotions.
The ghoulpool rules need a serious overhaul. Suri Cruise is more of a celebrity than 80%+ of the people that have earned us points this year. If she dies in 2007, rjs should be awarded 1st place automatically.
If Dakota Fanning dies this year I should be awarded first place forever.

Well, good luck avoiding the NINJA.

Why, because you've never heard of him? He was a longtime announcer (about 40 years) and played major league baseball before he could legally drive a car in most states. He was a two-time all star that won 135 games.
In the next few years (and I'll guess this year because of his death), he'll be honored by the baseball hall of fame for his broadcasting ability.
Maybe if he drove a Volvo and bitched about everything in life you'd be more impressed.
someone got his widdle feewings hurt. pray for me, sucker.
but yeah, never heard of him. and I stand corrected...he is obviously more famous than Bobby Taylor's dad.

Feelings hurt? You think more highly of yourself than you should.
Just pointing out the sheer ignorance of someone who likes to portray himself as an intellectual somehow better than the rest.
Yeah, I'm an intellectual.

Who would have thought neither Anna Nicole Smith nor Sean Taylor would survive 2007?
But that peanut he used for a brain might be. The rest will soon follow.
Sean Taylor has passed, according to ESPN TV (Not on the website yet)
Yes it is (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3129406).
AP: The University of Florida says Dr. James Robert Cade, the inventor of Gatorade, has died at age 80.
Gatorade was the shtein before they started poisoning it with high fructose corn syrup.
Too bad.
BTW, it should be noted that the Sean Taylor death rates on Dio's scale!

Gatorade was the shtein before they started poisoning it with high fructose corn syrup.
Is this true? It was originally less sweet/not loaded with that garbage? I can't stand the stuff myself, but my memory of when it first came out was that it was less sweet, and I've always chalked that impression up to it having been so long ago when I first had it..
Originally it was just sucrose and salt. Apparently it tasted awful, but highly effective at rehydration.
Adding the high fructose corn syrup and food dye significantly increased it's appeal to cavity loving kids.
nm-Romey and I are full of shtein. It always contained HFCS. the brominated vegetable oil is the new stuff however.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatorade
That can't be right. HFCS hasn't been around that long as a product sweetener, has it?
So, the absolutely spine-tingling fact is that shortly after the 1970s, and especially throughout the 1980s, HFCS began to replace sucrose (table sugar, cane sugar, or beet sugar) in almost everything. This means that for the last 25 years — a lifetime for some reading this — this jacked-up, messed up "all-natural" toxic sweetener has been in all of our foods as we developed into the fat ADD-riddled little monsters that we are.
Yeah, pretty much.

The man who knew too much!!
And you don't even want to know where they get Carmine Red from.....
Carmine may be prepared from cochineal, by boiling dried insects in water to extract the carminic acid and then treating the clear solution with alum, cream of tartar, stannous chloride, or potassium hydrogen oxalate; the coloring and animal matters present in the liquid are thus precipitated. Other methods are in use; sometimes egg white, fish glue, or gelatine are added before the precipitation.
The quality of carmine is affected by the temperature and the degree of illumination during its preparation, sunlight being requisite for the production of a brilliant hue. It differs also according to the amount of alumina present in it. It is sometimes adulterated with cinnabar, starch and other materials; from these the carmine can be separated by dissolving it in ammonia. Good carmine should crumble readily between the fingers when dry.

The idea that he could ever have landed those jumps is ludicrous. Those machines had like two inches of suspension travel.
He was number three on my list! Sweet... er I mean sad. He was the shtein when we was kids.
This video has corny music, but shows a lot of his jumps.

Certainly, he's a good riddance candidate.
Meh, I don't hold it against him too much that he whupped Tina Turner a coulple times. She got more than her revenge by turning him into one of themost hated figures in entertainment.
He was a hugely talented musician; without Ike Turner, we might not have rock and roll.
That's the only reason he's a candidate and not a slam dunk.
which, that he was a talented musician whose contribution was crucial to rock and roll being created, or that he was vilified worse than Mike Vick?
For the record, I think Ike Turner is the second coming of Hitler.
Well that explains why I think Tina Turner is the second coming of Golda Meir

Ryan Gracie, 33
Gracie seems like a candidate for the Good Riddance thread....
The Gracies are a family of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experts. They started the Ultimate Fighting Championship, essentially to make Royce Gracie look good. They got a pile of supposedly inferior fighters together, who Royce whipped regularly, until Kimo showed up. Kimo caught Royce with a lucky kick to the face. Royce was able to wrap him up and lock an arm for a submission, but couldn't continue.
After that, he only fought in exhibition, until Ken Shamrock caught him again with a kick, which led to a draw. After that, the Gracies stopped fighting in the UFC.
Rumor has it, the Gracies had a standing policy, come to Brazil, fight a family member of equal belt. If you win, they give you $1MM cash. That never happened.

Heh.....I always thought his name was Hoyce.
I only watched the first several UFC's. Once it started picking up steam and gaining popularity I quit watching because it became too much like boxing/wwf with all the promoting and hoopla surrounding it. I liked it better when it was more "underground" than with all the glitz and glamour they give it now.
Uh, it is pronounced Hoyce, but it's spelled with an R.
