Question:
Referring to the Eagles as "we" is
Option 1: okay.
votes: 14
Option 2: not okay.
votes: 14
example:
Quote from: King Cole on November 14, 2006, 07:01:37 PMWe don't go out and spend boat loads on other players but one thing we always do is re-sign our own guys if they are under 30 (excluding Trotter that one time).
Plus who says we wait until the offseason anyway? Plus they wouldn't have wanted to give up a 4th rounder for nothing and combined with the fact that he has become McNabb's favorite target when he is on the field.
I have vague memory of this discussion before. I think I may once have said it's okay.
If so, I was wrong, wrong, wrong.
Not farging okay.
Not ok.
i dont like to do it, but sometimes i do it. i try to say they but sometimes it aint happen. i also want to point out that mpmcgraw stopped having sex with me and has become a paranoid douche. well....guess what, dumbass. im not open anymore. so dont come calling.
I do it, Now if its King Cole then its a definite NO.
its one of the worst thing a sports fan can do...with wearing an item of a different team in the same city to a game being a close 2nd.
We had this discussion at the GB tailgate...
I use "we" but only on certain occasions.
OK instance to me;
"We signed (insert player name here)" or " We beat the shtein out of the taterskins".
Not ok;
"We have to protect the passer" or "We can't stop the run"

so it's "we" when things are good. but you not when things are bad?

No.
We would still apply in "We lost the Super Bowl" or "We have a sorry team".
I don't think this is something that can ever really be settled. Just about everyone has done it at one point or another, and if they aren't saying that "we" are making the plays, they are saying "our" players are, as if they own the team and the players.
What I try to stick to is this: in the heat of watching a game, things like "we need a score here" or "we can't stop their pass rush for shtein today" are acceptable. Games are emotional and people identify with their team. However, if a person uses "we" totally gratuitously ("we ran for 240 yards today -- they can't stop us!!") or when they have plenty of time to think about and be careful about what they are saying (like on an Internet message board in the middle of the week), they are in the wrong. It's a gray area sometimes.
Sometimes I say "we"... sometimes I don't. farg you if you don't like it. :P
We are all dumb for having this conversation

Agreed on both counts.
this is a VERY important discussion because this madness has to stop
saying 'we' for your team is basically as bad as it gets in fandom....you all should feel ashamed
with wearing an item of a different team in the same city to a game being a close 2nd
ive rocked eagle jerseys to phillie games (to piss the cornball seamhead phillie fans off) and sixers games (like the firday nite of some eagle playoff games)

It depends on the way that it's used but I know what you're saying.
I use 'we' in certain situations. IE: Opposing offense is on the field and it's 3rd down. I'll say something like "We need to stop them here."
Saying things like "We kicked your ass." or "We've got X amount of rings." and other stupid shtein like that is flat out retarded and it pisses me off. There's being a die hard fan of a team and then there's living vicariously through that team. Being a die hard fan is when you watch the team week in and week out regardless of how good or bad they are. It's knowing the roster front to back. It's being pissed off when they lose and happy when they win and back to normal within a day or 2.
The people who live vicariously through their team really piss me the hell off. They believe the team succeeds because of something they've done as a fan. When their team wins it literally improves the quality of their life and they feel a sense of accomplishment and validation from it. It makes them feel like their life has a purpose. See ExtremeSkins for unlimited examples.
Seeing the Eagles win a Super Bowl is a dream of mine and it always will be. And if I'm fortunate enough to see it I'll be ecstatic. But it won't be the crowning achievement in my life. I won't feel like I've accomplished anything. I won't feel as if I've achieved one of my life's goals. I'll simply feel like I finally got reimbursed for all the money I've spent on this team and the agonizing years of futility and close, but not close enough that they've given me. Basically, me and the Eagles will break even.

I get more annoyed with people who wear Phillies/Flyers/Sixers gear to Eagles game than I do the other way around. I also hate it when kids wear their h.s. football jersey to an Eagles game. I dunno why, it just pisses me off and makes me want to split their temple with the heel of my boot.
I heard you prefer stilettos or flip-flops.
I am the 12th man.
You're the backup fullback. That makes you the 54th man.
I am the 12th man
lol
Generally, I don't use "we." The exception, though, is when I'm talking about the Eagles to fans of other teams. It just helps the conversation.
Since the team, city, and fans are united by the "power of one", technically we should be using "I". :-*
I try to not use "we" in this context...but sometimes I fail to control myself.
When I hear someone saying "we" about a team, the cynical part of me thinks that I really need to get into marketing, because people are farging idiots who deserve nothing more than to be taken. Either marketing or religion. One of the two.
you are already a minister.
Which one is it? Reverend Dio? Father Dio?
You can call me Daddy if you like, I'm still not gonna give you a reach around.
Fine. But if you're not giving a reach around then I'm not pushing back any more.

That's like saying you can't decide between being a garbage man or a sanitation worker.
Nothing gets by Z.
If you thought that was redundant, you're forgetting your core audience around here.
Idiots. Rank idiots.
i think we all need to shut the hell up
Why stop now?
Once you've stabbed the bitch 40 times, why not thump her a couple more?
"We" suck
After yesterday, I'm proud to NOT use "we" when referring to the Eagles.
Totally. They suck.
so do all OUR knees hurt today?
Not only does my knee hurt, but I'm throwing up on the 45 yard line and losing NFC Championship games.
It's my balls that the Eagles kick on a weekly basis. I see no problem using "we" to describe the team.
When the Eagles win, it's "we." When they lose, it's "they."
Last week it was we, this week it's they.
Simple enough.

Bryant is all character all the time.
Want a real good laugh? It might even cheer some of you up a little bit.
We had a trade offer from KC in 04, this jackass for Larry Johnson straight up. At that point we just wanted to get rid of him, and Johnson was a disgruntled backup. Instead we traded for Morgan, because we had just drafted Jones.
A fine example of why "we" is most def not ok. That's just embarrassing.

If the Giants double us up in yards, we'll be out of it by halftime. You can take that to the bank.
exactly
i think he thinks we are playing the skins again this week
Ha, I actually saw that and almost commented.
We are going to the Eagles game. We are going to tailgate beforehand. We are going to get farged up and eat lots of dead mammals. We are going to throw eggs at the opposing team's buses. We are going to play loud music, smoke dope, do shots, buy cheap stolen merchandise in the parking lot, button up our shtein and then walk to the stadium.
Then we are going to watch THEM play the game.
The end.
Sometimes, even a guy from Florida can say it straight.
we agree
in dio's never ending quest to take down IGY he missed me taking out two we's with one bullet...munson for being the biggest homer ever and feva for droppin a we'll
The point remains that you are your own worst enemy.
probably
Totally OK.
It's not like anyone is going to get confused and think the poster is actually going on the field.... unless they're really stupid.
Besides, I considered the fans an integral part of the team.

Think this would be too long to tag as my sig?
It's easily the best post Rome ever made, def. sig worthy. Don't remember the character count, but maybe you could request an exemption, since you're the people's :CF mascot and all.
Doesn't matter to me. I've had sigs and avatars turned off for months now so I can't see them anyway.
I do the same. Less visual "noise."
Me too.
I had to turn them off because it was taking way too long to open up threads at work. Gubment computers rawk!
We are going to crush Dallas Sunday.
Hopefully we crush them on Monday too.
holla!

I did a lot of thinking about this. I've invested 35 years of watching the Eagles through every season. I've gotten into fist fights with Cowboys and Giants and taterskins fans for wearing their gear in our bar. I've sat there sweating out all the god damn nail bitting games this team puts me through year after year after year. Is it OK to include myself as part of the team? Yer farging right it is. Without the fans there would be no team. The Coach even calls us the 12th man.
Then we should at least rate an employee discount on game tickets or something.
