QuoteThe Eagles have traded fullback Josh Parry to the Seattle Seahawks, their second trade of the day, and have released 17 players and put two on IR to reach the 53-man roster limit.
The released players are: QB Timmy Chang, LB Torrance Daniels, G/C Trey Darilek, WR Jabar Gaffney, WR Michael Gasperson, WR Justin Jenkins, DE Darrell Lee, DT Keyonta Marshall, WR Darnerien McCants, LB Dedrick Roper, S J.R. Reed, WR Bill Sampy, TE Stephen Spach, CB Donald Strickland, TE Andy Thorn, CB Matt Ware, CB Dexter Wynn.
The Eagles also placed OL Stefan Rodgers (knee) and LB Chris Gocong (stinger) on the Injured Reserve list ...
Intersting that McCants and Gaffney didn't make it. Also Hanson makes it over Strickland.
Eagles keep 10 Dlineman.
They keep only 5 WR's. Joselio Hanson wins the 4th CB job.
Mikell makes it over JR Reed.
Also as expected Ware and Wynn both gone.
I'm very surprised at McCants because he was so good on special teams.
McCants is the only surprise to me.
With Parry gone, Mahe is the only member of the Axis of Suck left.
There are really no surprises at all, except maybe that I don't see Bruce Perry's name on the list.
Keep Mahe and Perry? What the hell is the point of Mahe with Perry here?
I guess it came down to McCants vs Perry, and they figure RB is a bigger injury prone position, so they kept Perry.

With Reed cut, Perry becomes both a KR and insurance in case Buckhalter goes down.
Yeah.
QuoteWR Jabar Gaffney, DT Keyonta Marshall, WR Darnerien McCants, CB Donald Strickland, CB Matt Ware.
Not excited about these. I wanted McCants and Gaffney on the team. I've always liked Marshall because he provides size inside and has performed every time he's gotten to play at any level. Strickland was decent last season and Ware, well I just had hopes that Ware would turn into a decent safety.
But really, the team getting rid of Parry is enough to make me happy. I was hoping they'd trade/cut Greg Lewis but whatever.
Im surprised they kept Greg Lewis over Gaffney/McCants. I really hope T. Daniels makes the practice squad.
McCants probably won't get another job, and easily wind up on the roster at some point later in the year. Jabar Gaffney is a somewhat proven vet WR, and he just got beaten out for a job by Hank Baskett. I'm sure he's proud of himself.
what did they trade parry for? i'm obviously not hoping for much, just curious.
nevermind, i just saw parry has his own thread.... for some reason.

Marshall still has PS eligibility, right? Assuming he clears the waiting period, of course.
I just wanted to remind everyone that this team cut Gaffney and McCants in favor of keeping Bruce Perry and Scott Young.
Unreal.
I'm surprised by Gaffney and Reed, almost surprised by McCants.
Unreal?
McCants or Gaffney would be the 6th receiver. They wouldn't play. Neither would've had more than 5 catches the entire season if that. It's better to keep depth on the lines where guys tend to get banged up.
There is no reason that Greggie should have made the cut.
Scott Young has no future in this league and no value to this team. He is an Andy Reid project and nothing more. McCants and Gaffney have a whole shteinload more to offer than Scott farging Young.

Bingo.

Keeping Young changed with Fraley was traded, because Young can play guard and Cole can't.

Well then atleast keep an OL that has played OL for more than one goddamn year.
Some problems I have.
- Cutting BOTH Gaffney and McCants
- Cutting BOTH Ware and Strickland
- Carrying 6 RBs
- Carrying 6 total LBs, and Short cant even play LB

I stand corrected.
I am not a Greg Lewis fan, but he is in the position he needs to be. Whenever he is in the 4th Wr position he does very weel.
I am very suprised Perry made it over McCants.
1. Trading Hank was dumb
2. Cutting Darnerian McCants in favor of Greg goddamn Lewis was even dumber
3. Trading Parry was awesome
4. Not having JR Reed sucks. Who returns kicks now? Farging Mahe and Hood? Bah.
5. Bruce Perry would be my answer above except I have a feeling he'll be the first cut as soon as they sign someone else.
6. Only carrying 6 LBs is stupid - where's the backup SAM? Better hope that bowtied farg doesn't get hurt or else we see Jason Short at SAM. Holy jeez I'd love to be a TE that day.
If they sign Davenport, he can return kicks. But I doubt they sign him because Tapeh can be that big back now.
Heckert said Bruce will return kicks.
Good.
Maybe Mahe is the guy who they'll cut if they sign someone else. But then who returns punts?
Lewis?
They're going to listen to rjs and put Westbrook back there.
Maybe Stallworth does it...

with only 5 WR, I'd rather have Stallworth stay away from KR, it's "dangerous".
So would I. But I guess we'll have to go with your boy Reno!
Now you don't have to retire the #34! ;D
How about cutting Scott Young and Perry and signing Ponder and Davenport.

actually wore it at last night PS game vs. Jets....thought it would be the last time he would be on Eagles roster.
while i dont like that they cut both mccants and gaffney for g lewis (exact opposite of what i thought they were going to to do) i really dont like them releasing j.r. reed. we need a PR/KR and he seemed to me at least to be the best out of the bunch we have right now.
i wonder if they could have have released gaffney if they had not picked up stallworth.

the only one i am surprised at is McCants...the rest are sub par
Interesting takes you folks have... Here's my POV:
JR Reed is finished as a KR. If you can't tell that he just isn't the same player anymore, you are blind. He has definately lost a step. Damn shame too, as I always liked his aggressive nature. Only in Phila, could some wierd shtein like that take place. *sigh*
As for WR, I am NOT surprised they cut Gaffney. I am surprised they cut McCant's though...he was a good ST'er, and we know they need that. I can understand why the kept G-lew though..as a 4th WR, he is quite good. He will get favorable match up's against inexperienced and slower nickel backs, in certain situations. He can be quite a PITA for an opposing defense in situations like that.
Perry is insurance at RB for now, but was kept mostly because of JR Reed's lost step as a KR. I like Perry as a KR man in this situation. I also like his running style. It's a shame he is a bit smallish, and injury prone though. I predict he will be cut when they aquire more player's off the WW. All you Reno hater's: get over it. He isnt' going anywhere, as he is too valuable to Andy. The guy plays 4 positions, albeit he isn't real good at any of them. *argh*
LB is where I have great concern. Because the birds' don't value this position as one of great importance, this defense could really suffer. Sure a great pass rush negates a lot of what an offense wants and can do, but when you run in to smart coaches and good teams, it simply isn't enough. Good teams will just go to a quick passing game, and throw the ball off of 3 and 5 step drops, negating the pass rush, and keeping the D on it's heels. It's THOSE times, when the LB's have to be for real, and the only real LB we currently have is Trot. *Lord, help us please*
I never thought I'd see this day: The birds' have too many quality linemen on both sides of the ball. They are enamored with some of the young prospects, and they refused to cut any of them loose....thus other positions had to take the hit at cutdown time. I believe Andy is going to try and make Young in to a center, with the departure of Fraley. I also suspect there will be a few surprises from JJ's D, sometime this season. Lack of LB skill/depth will force JJ to use smoke and mirror's. I can see Cole and J Thomas coming in as rush ends in the nickel, Howard sliding over to DT, and Kearse trying to drop in to coverage and take away the underneath, against lesser TE's. (or switch Kearse and Cole in that situation) It will be interesting, that's for sure! I guess we will have to wait and find out.
one other things. mccant's was a decent ST guy, for average, at it's best, PR and KR coverage units.
Ware has been claimed by Arizona

Yeah, I don't understand that. They usually are pretty quick to name the PS the day after the final cuts. Maybe their sifting through all of the cuts and taking a look at some guys, particularly RS who could help.

Spads mentioned that there doesn't appear to be any waiver activity, so maybe it's something else holding it up.
if only greggie could return punts...or even kickoffs. then they could dump perry and/or reno the team mascot & open up a spot for davenport.
From Lightbulb Head's ESPN blog:
QuoteWaiver madness: The waiver wire was crazy Sunday. Teams put in 39 claims and 31 players were awarded to 12 teams. The Packers were the most active. They put in eight waiver claims and ended up with three rookies -- guard Tony Palmer, safety Charlie Peprah and cornerback Jarrett Bush. Cornerback Matt Ware was one of the most popular players. The Cardinals, Falcons and Bengals put in waiver claims on him, and he was awarded to the Cardinals. The Saints, Texans and Titans revamped the bottoms of their rosters. The Saints were awarded five waiver claims, the Texans and Titans each had four claims. The Panthers hopes of getting back all of their cuts failed when they lost four players to waiver claims to other teams.
teams feed off good coaching. when your in solid systems like the Birds, Bucs, and Pitt....you will be picked up if your cut

QuoteHey everybody, I'm J.R's sister. At first we were very upset with the Eagles, but J.R did get hurt last season. That gave the opportunity for Sean to get signed last season. Bottom line , they had four Safty's, its a numbers game. The Eagles wanted J.R to wait two weeks and see what happened.
We couldnt wait, so now he signed a one year contract with the St. Louis Rams, I think that he will have a great opportunity there, there starting safety has only been there two years, and there second string is 29 years old, so we really thing it was a great carrear move. The Washington taterskins also took interest, but St. Louis Rams had a better offer. Overal we love the Eagles, and they made it possible for my brother to get out there. We thank everyone for there support, maybe one day he will be back.....

Somehow, someway he got this from JR Reed's "sister". Don't know how true it is or if it's true at all, but apparently he's going to STL after turning down an offer from Washington. And if it is true I am glad he didn't go to Washington.
Yeah, Washington doesn't pay for silly things like depth. Only big name starters.
Well, except for Randle-El.
I am still pretty sure that Randle El is the best quarterback on the Skins.

Reed was the one guy I watched specifically all preseason and was pulling for. I'm sorry to see him go, but he did seem to be a step behind most times, though his return from nerve damage was extraordinary.
If we get one thing from this, it's the joy that the taterskins lost him to a team like the Rams.
Randle-El is a big name. Huge name. Everyone knows that any player with a Randle in his name, no matter where or how it gets spelled, is a great player.

That'd be nice.
Supposedly Roob mentioned on WIP last night that McCants is going to sign with the Giants, but there's no links yet...
Man, I can't believe we stood pat, and didn't do Jack. No Willie Ponder, No Keith Adams, etc....I'm not so sure about this ST unit now. McCant's was a big loss on ST's, and if they let the GINTS sign him, that will suck.
Since it seems they will use Cole as a short yardage FB, I feel a bit better...him blocking for TT, and both of them hammering in behind the "Big Kid," should be unstoppable. Still disappointed they couldn't pick up a servicable Will or Sam LB though.

And while Perry hasn't accomplished what Ponder has, he still averaged 27.3 on KOR's last year.

Yeah, almost as bad as letting Brian Mitchell and Dorsey Levens sign with them in 2003--how did that work out? Mitchell was on the sideline watching Westbrook return "The Punt" for the gw TD. He finished the year with the worst numbers of his career. Levens didn't even play that much--I think when he ran for 60 + yards against the Eagles, that was the high point of his year up there.
