That's exactly why that franchise will dwell in the basement years to come. Shame, it would be nice to see the Cards make some kind of improvement.
It's ok. He has to feed the handicapped kids that the wire-haired man-goblin had before she met him.
[cardtrader]You stupid Philly fans know nothing! Kurt Warner is exactly what this team needs! Consistency is something we have never had![/cardtrader]
honestly the QB wasn't the problem last year, the defense and lack of a running game was.
If they actually go after and sign Edge their offense could be scary good.

Jets release Jason Fabini, Jay Fiedler.
Sadly, I wouldn't mind the Eagles picking up Fiedler as a backup.
Why sadly? He'd be a helluva lot better than anything we got, and he'd probably even be adequate if needed for the short term.

The more I think about it, the more I think Santonio Holmes, Sinorice Moss, and several others in the draft are probably going to be better pure receivers that Randle-El is. I don't think he'll get a deal from a team that looks anything like what Wayne just got. No where close. I just don't think that after you substract his Super Bowl performance, he was ever that great a receiver. shtein, is he even that great a kick returner?

Ravens to let Jamal Lewis test free agency
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press
OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens have decided not to protect Jamal Lewis from free agency, but have not ruled out the possibility of signing the one-time 2,000-yard rusher to a long-term contract.
Lewis, the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2003, when he rushed for 2,066 yards, slumped to a career-low 906 yards this season following a four-month sentence in a Florida federal prison and two months in a halfway house for a cocaine conspiracy plea bargain. He also underwent surgery on his right ankle.
The Ravens would have had to assign a one-year, $6 million franchise tender to retain Lewis. Not doing so means they are likely to look over the veteran running back market while evaluating potential rookie running backs such as USC's LenDale White and Memphis' DeAngelo Williams. The Ravens have the 13th overall pick in the draft.
Chester Taylor, Lewis' backup, is likely to become a free agent.
"We will still consider the possibility of talking to Jamal about a long-term contract with us," said Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome, who drafted Lewis fifth overall out of Tennessee in 2000.
Lewis could join an already crowded running back market that could include NFL MVP Shaun Alexander of Seattle; Indianapolis' Edgerrin James and Carolina's DeShaun Foster.
"I've spoken with Jamal and his agent today to let them know."
Lewis' agent Mitch Frankel had no immediate comment.
Lewis' total in 2003 was the second-highest total in league history. However, his production has declined each year since then while dealing with legal turmoil and injuries. In 2004, Lewis rushed for 1,006 yards. This season, Lewis averaged a career-low 3.4 yards per carry and scored a career-low three touchdowns. He rushed for 100 yards only twice this year.
Get Lewis.
From a purely football point of view, I would take Lewis in a second. Plus it would probably make PG's brain explode and that would be high comedy.
Lewis stunk last year, but i'm sure he'd be awesome splitting time in Philly's pass happy offensive scheme.
Jamal Lewis = garbage
Jay Fiedler = good backup
Jerald Sowell = good FB..he fits into the ABP theory (Anybody but Parry)

I believe it was the Pittsburgh Gazette that had a story on that over the weekend. It's rumored the Bears are going to pay him between 3.5-4M per year. The writer asks, "Who would pay a reciever who scored 1 TD and averaged 2 catches per game that much?" Those are Pinkston-type numbers.

I should rephrase...he was garbage last year. And the fact that he wasn't running hard showed that he's a guy who isn't interested in playing hard.
Lewis not running hard between the tackles >>>>> Westbrook I-Think-I-Can'ing his way between the tackles.
Westbrook can run between the tackles when he has the blocking to do so.
This discussion is moot though. Just like those talking about edgerrin James coming here. Not gonna happen.
What evidence do you have the Westbrook can run between the tackles? In everyone one of his first three seasons there were other RBs on the roster who ran between the tackles better than he did. And one year that RB was bazillion year old Dorsey Levens. It's wishful thinking to blame it on the blocking.
I seem to remember him making several good runs between the tackles when he had good blocking. Off the top of my head I remember a run in Buffalo in 2003 where he went 66 yards and a run against the Giants in 2004 that went for 50 yards. What is the common denominator in these instances? He had a real FB named Jon Ritchie leading the way.
Also in 2003 the Eagles had a commitment to the run.
He can do it. He just needs someone committed to calling runs, the OL blocking well and any FB not named Josh Parry blocking for him.
Anyone can run "between the tackles" if they have a gaping hole created for them. The runners truly adept at it can BOTH make small holes appear large or can create holes of their own with raw power. Westbrook can only do one of those things - exploiting any hole he's given. He isn't a tackle-breaker at the point of attack.
BUT WESTRBOOK RULES! HOW CAN ANYONE SAY ANYTHING NEGATIVE ABOUT WESTBROOK?! LOLOLO!1! HE'S THE BEST WEAPON EVAR!1!!11
Right. Because Westbrook never creates his own lanes, never hits the cutback lane or never breaks a tackle at the POA.
He sucks. Should never have signed him.

He rarely creates his own lane. He often hits a cutbank lane. He rarely breaks a tackle at the POA.
I love him. He's a gamebreaker. He can exploit a defense in the right situation... but he does not strike fear into anyone at the point of attack. Most of his big runs are around the outside or are YAC.

Point of attack. I think. :paranoid
Pickled Ox Ankle
Westbrook is actually pretty good at shedding blockers. And when he doesn't break a tackle he makes people look stupid in the open field.
Westbrook had an amazing run between the tackles against the Dolphins on MNF in 2004. I think it was the 3rd play of the game and he made a ton of people miss. Ran in for the score, if I remember correctly.
The fact that we can remember specific plays when Westbrook had success between the tackles tells you all you need to know about him.
I like him and I think he's an awesome weapon. I don't think he's the kind of running back that can carry the ball out of the backfield 20-25 times a game, nor do I think he's the kind of guy who can pound it out in the fourth quarter when the Eagles are nursing a tight lead.
Draft LenDale White, Sign Edgerrin James... whatever! Just sign someone who is a true mauler back there to take the heat off Donovan, already.
Would you entertain resigning Duce if he's cut free from the Steelers?
I was contemplating it recently, and I'd take him back. I think he could fill a need, be a pass catching weapon out of the backfield, and assimilate to the team without any problems. Plus he's a good leader.
I just feel shaky drafting offense in the first round when we need tons of help in the LB corps, especially OLB, and we need to solidify the defensive line. Plus, we have to think about the future of our OL.
Priority list:
1. OLB
2. DE/DT
3. OT/OG
I'd consider a WR, but I'd rather pick one up in FA. I think everything will be much clearer when FA actually picks up and if the Eagles establish themselves as major players this FA season.
Hell, there is a great possibility for an uncapped year in 2007, might as well go for it and hand out some decent-sized contracts now.
Z... if I had a time machine handy, I certainly take Duce back.
Fact is, he's done. Stick a fork in him.
Some break downs of the the top offensive free agents....

2006 NFL Free Agents:
Offensive Linemen
By: Thomas J Gersey
1. Steve Hutchinson, RG, Seattle
Hutchinson is widely considered the prize in this year's group of free agent offensive linemen. A solid, technically sound guard, Hutchinson won't wow you by obliterating pass rushers. He will however hold his ground against anybody in the league. Still only 28 years old, he has become a perennial Pro Bowler, and was an All-Pro this past season. 6-5, 313 lbs, he is built like a left tackle, but he uses his size as leverage on the right side of the line to hold his ground and prevent the opponent from peeling off and making plays. He plays under control, getting good first steps in the run game, while getting off the line in the passing game, allowing him to create proper holes for his runners, and giving his passers adequate time to get through their reads. He also pulls well, and would be a great fit on a team focused on the ground game while supplanting it with a conservative passing game.
GOOD FITS: Seattle, Minnesota, Washington, Cincinnati, Tampa Bay, Oakland, New York Jets
EARLY PICK: Seattle has been going through this for some time now, knowing that their best players are going to be free agents. First it was Walter Jones, then Hasselbeck and Alexander. Now Hutchinson creates a dilemma as both he and Alexander are free agents this season. Many consider re-signing Alexander a no-brainer, but there have been some in the know who believe maintaining the core of the offensive line and handing the job to Maurice Morris may be the more prudent move. Most likely, the 'Hawks will give a long term deal to Alexander, while franchising Hutchinson for this season, then weighing their options next year. They have needs at defensive end and wide receiver, so they will have some decisions to make. If Seattle does let Hutchinson walk, Washington and Minnesota seem like perfect fits. Both need a right guard, and with the potential departure of Culpepper in Minnesota, both run a similar ball control offense, predicated on minimizing mistakes, that would highlight Hutchinson's skills. If neither is a fit, Cincy, Tampa, Oakland and the Jets could all use a Pro Bowl guard.
2. LeCharles Bentley, C, New Orleans
Bentley has good size at 6'2, 313, but it better known for his quickness. Quick footwork gets him out of his stance, and out blocking linebackers when necessary. His is lithe and swift off the snap, and is the rare center who can get out and pull. For all of his size, he does tend to get pushed around by very physical nose tackles, as his slight lack of lower body strength keeps him from maintaining position against a fierce bull rush. However, Bentley is tenacious and fiesty, and will not give up even when he appears to be overmatched. He is smart and consistent, and makes good adjustments at the line. Only 26, Bentley is better when he can get out and move, unblocked, and would fit best with a team that can surround him with Pro Bowl caliber players.
GOOD FITS: Buffalo, Atlanta, Carolina, New England, NY Giants, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, New Orleans
EARLY PICK: New Orleans has a few free agents, but Bentley is the only one who is a must re-sign. It is possible he would be franchised, but the question remains how wise that would be with a center. However, with the Saints likely to rebuild around Matt Leinart or Vince Young, protecting their investment makes the most sense. Look for the Saints to retain Bentley at any and all costs. If not, any of the above listed contenders would be a fantastic fit. Most notably, the Steelers are said to be very interested in Bentley.
3. Jon Runyan, RT, Philadelphia
At 6'7, 330, Runyan is a mammoth blocker who locks on to an end shuts him down at the point of attack. Only the fastest, most athletic ends can hope to evade Runyon, but anything less than the best, and Runyon will clamp down, and control a pass rusher. He excels in short yardage situations, where his nasty streak comes into play, and he can maul everything in front of him. A very good run blocker, he is a superb pass blocker, acting as a wall between the defender and his quarterback, forcing them far outside their rush lanes. He is seldom beaten by double moves, and for all of his size, has a sound technique. His only drawback is his age, though linemen have a greater life expectancy in the league than other players. Would be worth a 3-4 year deal from a contender.
GOOD FITS: Philadelphia, Atlanta, Baltimore, New England, San Francisco
EARLY PICK: Runyon is likely to remain in Philadelphia, where they can't afford to lose him. Atlanta is in the market for elite lineman, as is San Francisco, who has holes everywhere. New England and Baltimore could use upgrades at Right Tackle, and Runyon is the best of the bunch.
4. Mike Flanagan, C, Green Bay
Flanagan is emblematic of the new breed of lineman, smaller, but able to rely on good technique with his hands and feet to excel in run block schemes. Flanagan is at his best when allowed to block back, or to set up precise blocking angles, and would fit well with a team that focuses on blocking schemes, rather than a "smash mouth" style. Flanagan is consistent, and rarely makes a mistake. However, he can be overpowered, but even then, he does not get beat so badly as to pose a threat to his quarterback. He also performs well in the shotgun formation, and shows great ability to adjust to stunts and blitzes, picking up players who beat his guards. Like Runyon, age is an issue.
GOOD FITS: Green Bay, Atlanta, New England, Tampa Bay, Buffalo, Carolina
EARLY PICK: After the departure of Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle last season, and the debacle that followed, the Packers would be loathe to let another elite blocker walk this season. Expect the Packers to bring Flanagan back as they attempt to squeeze a final season out of Brett Favre. If he walks, Flanagan would excel in Atlanta where they run similar blocking schemes to the Broncos, relying on trapping and pulling. Buffalo and Carolina may lose their centers, creating holes in those lines.
5. Jeff Backus, LT, Detroit
Still only 28, this former first rounder is your typical fill in the blank kind of lineman. Nothing super special, he won't hurt you. You can stick him into the line, and forget about him. He is tough, aggressive, and intelligent, with a sound work ethic and technique. He lacks ideal size, but he will scrap and fight when he feels he is getting beat. Will never give up on a play, though he may still get beat by an elite pass rusher. He will never overpower a player, but he also will rarely get run over. Slightly above average, he should be on the shopping list for any team with severe problems on the left side.
GOOD FITS: Detroit, Cleveland, San Francisco
EARLY PICK: Detroit will likely keep Backus in the Silver and Blue, but a team like Cleveland could look to Backus if LJ Shelton were to walk. The Niners are also in a major rebuilding mode, and Backus would be the perfect low cost option, someone they could plug in and leave ther for 10 years.
OTHER FREE AGENTS OF NOTE:
LJ Shelton, LT, Cleveland: Shelton is a massive left tackle, who has just never fully developed. Excellent talent, but something has always been lacking. If he could harness his ability, and learn to be more of a force inside, Shelton could be a real steal. San Fran should take a look at him, and the Lions should take a look at this Michigan native should Backus walk.
Vicor Riley, RT, Houston: Excels against smaller ends, and can get beat by more athletic players. An 8 year veteran, he has good technique and strength, and has learned how to makeup for initial mistakes. Not an elite lineman, he is a solid upgrade for many teams. May be a good fit in Arizona.
Jeff Mitchell, C, Car/Melvin Fowler, C, Minn/Justin Hartwig, C, Tennessee/Andy McCollum, C, St Louis: Along with Flanagan and Bentley, there is a bumper crop of centers this season. Most teams will likely keep their centers, but as soon as one walks, look for a game of musical chairs to take place as teams scramble to fill needs. All four of these guys would fit in well anywhere. None is a pro bowl caliber player, but all are solid, dependable veterans.

2006 NFL Free Agents:
Wide Receiver
By: Thomas J Gersey
1. Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis [83 rec, 1008 yds, 5 td]
Wayne is very close to being the complete package. He has soft hands, and consistently makes the easy catches. He can make the acrobatic ones, but not often enough to be considered an elite, game changing player. His speed is better than average, though some top notch corners will be able to keep up with him. His strength is excellent route running. He has excelled in Indianapolis, where precise routes will get you the football consistently with Peyton Manning behind center. So effective has Wayne become that the past two years he has gone from a distant number 2 receiver, to the Colts' 1(a). He definitely benefits from his supporting cast, and it is tough to say whether or not he could be a #1 on a less talented team. However, he is certain to be more like P Burress than P Price if he were to change teams.
GOOD FITS: Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Washington, Indianapolis
EARLY PICK: Wayne is a player who will be most effected by the actions of Edgerring James. If James and Dwight Freeney sign large deals, Wayne will likely find a huge payday elsewhere. If James leaves, the Colts will keep Wayne, and maintain their dominance through the air. In the event Wayne does leave, he will likely seek a situation where he either be the number 1 guy from day one, or be 1(a) again, with top receiver status looming in the near future. He would be more of a complementary player in Chicago or Washington, and those are run-happy offenses. In Denver, he would replace Ashlie Lelie as Rod Smith's heir apparant, and maintain his place on a winning ball club. Teams like KC and Philly make the most sense, where there are established passing offenses in place with Pro Bowl caliber QBs calling the plays. I expect KC to make a very strong push for his services.
2. Antonio Bryant, Cleveland [69 rec, 1009 yds, 4 td]
Putting up a 1000 yard season in Indy is one thing, but doing it in Cleveland with a more heralded first rounder flanking you is another. Bryant is the prototypical receiver, with good size, and very good speed. He runs very efficient routes, and gets off the line exceptionally quick. Though his speed gets him into his routes early, he does not have break away speed in the deep open field, although his strength and body control allow him to position himself for the deep bal very well. He has the desire and competitive spirit you want in a top receiver, and will fight any corner on every pass. He was a top 15 talent as a college junior, but demonstrated immaturity as a senior and slipped to the late second round, so there are questions about his attitude. However, he has been a solid citizen in Cleveland and if those doubts are erased, would be an excellent fit on any team looking for a dependable number 2 receiver.
GOOD FITS: Minnesota, Baltimore, Carolina, Houston, Tennessee, Washington, Cleveland, Atlanta
EARLY PICK: Bryant is a wild card, because there is little information in regards to how teams perceive him. He has been under the radar, with the thought that he could break out in the right situation. Where he will end up is anyone's guess, but a team with a solid passing game and a need for a quick, physical receiver would be the perfect fit. Atlanta would be a great team for Bryant, as Mike Vick could use a dependable receiver who will fight for wayward passes. In Carolina, he would be a great Robin to Steve Smith's superman, while in places like Tennessee or Baltimore, he could be the number one receiver in title only, as those offenses will look to move the ball around evenly.
3. Antwan Randle El, Pittsburgh [35 rec, 558 yds, 1 td]
A converted quarterback, there was never any question that Randle El's athleticism would convert to the next level. However, there has always been a question as to whether or not he could pick up the nuances of the position. In his 4 years in the league, Randle El has put those worries to rest, and become Slash II in the Pittsburgh system. Randle El is agile and shifty, almost impossible to get a direct hit on. He has sufficient size and strength to go in the middle of the field, and often performs better there, where a quick pass allows him to out-manuever linebackers one-on-one. On a team that emphasises the run game, there aren't many opportunities for a third receiver, however, Randle El has consistently made the most of his time on the field. Couple with that his track record as a return man, and his value to a contender could be considerable.
GOOD FITS: Chicago, Pittsburgh, New England, San Diego
EARLY PICK: Rumor has it that Chicago is already targeting Randle El this free agent season. Typically, the Bears identify a player they want, and they do what it takes to get him (see: Muhammad, T Jones). This year should be no different. Expect the Bears to overpay for Randle El, and put him in the slot, where he is comfortable, giving Rex Grossman a more reliable option than he has had in the past. Throw in Randle El's Illinois roots, and it becomes a match made in heaven.
4. Keenan McCardell, San Diego [70 rec, 917 yds, 9 td]
Excellent hands and a feel for his place on the field, McCardellis the type of number 1 receiver you like to have. He has the inate ability to find holes in the zone and get open on a consistent basis. He isn't a speed burner, and can be shut down by elite corners, but even then, he manages to get his 4-5 catches and find space in the end zone. He is nearing the end of his career, and at 36 is a risky proposition as a free agent. However, with the success of guys like Jerry Rice and Joey Galloway recently, production is all that matters, and McCardell is certainly capable of that. Similarly sized to Antonio Bryant, he isnt nearly as strong or as physical, and will not win as many battles as he loses. A possession receiver at this point, but with the ability to stretch the field when the defense allows it. Not very strong after the catch.
GOOD FITS: San Diego, Houston, Carolina, New England, Kansas City, Denver
EARLY PICK: McCardell's place is on a team seeking a stop gap, an effective receiver to hold down the position until a younger player can fill it. Teams like Carolina, New England and Denver are super bowl contenders who could strengthen already effective offenses with a savvy veteran like McCardell. In the long run, San Diego can't afford to lose him right now, and will work hard to sign him to a short term deal before the free agent period. Houston is the wild card. With Gary Kubiak and Reggie Bush joining the Texans, McCardell would be the perfect supplement to the young and athletic Andre Johnson. McCardell is a Houston native, and ending his career at home isn't too far fetched an idea.
5. Joe Jurevicius, Seattle [55 rec, 694 yds, 10 td]
The prototypical possession receiver. All he does? Catch touchdowns. When Darrell Jackson went down with an injury, Jurevicius stepped up and saved the Seahawks season. This is his third Super Bowl appearance with his third different team, which says something about his contribution in the locker room. He is a top notch character guy, and brings more than athletic gifts to any team. He has excellent hands, and size that rivals most tight ends. At 6'5, 230 lbs, Jurevicius fits great in the slot, where he can handle linebackers, or on the outside, where he can screen smaller defensive backs. He is smart and seasoned, and knows how to get open. Seattle would love to keep him, and will likely try their best to do so. But after a Super Bowl run with more pressing free agents, there just may not be enough money.
GOOD FITS: Seattle, Washington, Carolina, Denver, Pittsburgh
EARLY PICK: Where he will end up is anyone's guess. He fits best with a contender who relies on a ball control offense. Seattle and Carolina aren't really his best fits, but he would be a sound complimentary receiver in either offense. The memories of Ed McCaffery are still fresh in the minds of Broncos fans, and Jurevicious could easily be a similar complement to Rod Smith for the next couple years. A player like Jake Plummer needs as many veteran players on the field to be effective. In Washington, he would team well with a player like Mark Brunell, and offer the soft touch to compliment the lightning of Santana Moss. Pittsburgh makes a great deal of sense. The Steelers rarely make big name signings, instead spending their money wisely on role players. With Randle El likely to leave, Jurevicius (who played at Penn State) could step in and be a third sure handed target for the conservative Rothlisberger.
OTHER FREE AGENTS OF NOTE:
Koren Robinson, Minnesota: A gifted receiver with significant problems catching the ball, Robinson had a late season rebirth after legal troubles got him released in Seattle. Still young and talented, some team will give him an incentive-laden shot in the hopes of untapping his undeniable potential.
David Givens, New England: He and Troy Brown are solid if unspectacular Patriot receivers available this offseason. In today's NFL, Givens is the type of player not exciting enough to warrant a long look from other teams, who will end up signing with his previous team for a reasonable amount.
Brandon Lloyd, SF/ Kevin Curtis, STL/ Nate Burleson, Minn: These are the top notch restricted FAs. Lloyd is going no where, as the Niners cant afford to lose anyone with any talent currently in red and gold. Curtis was a revelation in St Louis, and it is possible a bad team may overpay for his speed and excitement....and make a huge mistake. Burleson was supposed to supplant Randy Moss as the go-to guy in Minnesota, and will likely re-sign for a second shot under new guidance. Patience, however, is wearing thin.

2006 NFL Free Agents:
Running Backs
By: Thomas J Gersey
1. Shaun Alexander, Seattle
Following an MVP campaign, the value for Alexander has never been higher. At 5'11, 225, Alexander is a load who excels between the tackles. His style has been perfect for the Seahawks, who boast an exceptional line able to create a multitude of holes through which Alexander is adept at squeezing. In the open-field he is a load to bring down, and has just enough secondary speed to turn 10 yard runs into 25 yarders. For all of his physical gifts, he isn't a shifty runner, and if placed behind a lower calibur line, would surely find difficulty replicating his Seattle performance. He catches most passes thrown to him, but isnt so elusive that he can create much in one-on-one situations.
GOOD FITS: Seattle, Denver, Atlanta, Arizona, Carolina, Minnesota, Philadelphia
EARLY PICK: The bottom line is that if Alexander hits the open market, any and all teams looking for an elite back will come calling. His best fit is in Seattle where the fans love him, and the schemes the Seahawks run play specifically to his strengths. Teams like Denver and Atlanta have been shuttling between backs for years, and both teams run speciallized blocking schemes that could allow Alexander to maintain his production. In Philadelphia or Carolina, he would looked upon to step in and mimic his 2005 production, which may prove to be more difficult than one would expect. Arizona is sure to make an offer, but Alexander would almost certainly see his performance cut in half should he go that route.
2. Edgerrin James, Indianapolis
Alexander's status as the league MVP and a lack of injuries are the only things placing him ahead of James on this list. The Edge is a strong runner between the tackles, with the ability to wear down a defense over the course of game. However, he also has the quickness to hit the corner and stretch the defense across the field. Also a tremendous receiver, his versatility has long been an overlooked factor in the success of the Colts passing game. The many looks James gives a defense forces it to spread itself thin in anticipation of a variety of plays. He is an adquate blocker in pass protection, and shows good awareness in recognizing different defensive packages. Health is obviously an issue, as he has missed time with knee, angle and rib injuries.
GOOD FITS: Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Carolina, Philadelphia, NY Jets, Baltimore
EARLY PICK: Edge is likely to seek out either a warm weather franchise or one playing in a large media market. It is no secret that he is less than enamored with the Midwest, and should the Colts show a waning interest in resigning him (as they are) he is likely to seek out a long term deal elsewhere. Jacksonville doesn't have a need at running back, but Fred Taylor has been twice the injury risk that James has been, and with Edge's desire to return home to Florida, the Jags are really the only viable candidate in the state for his services. Carolina is the only other possible destination that meets James' climate requirements, unless one actually believes he would subject himself to the losing ways of the Cardinals. Teams like the Jets and Ravens may create needs as they say goodbye to aging veterans and free agents, respectively. Those two and Philly would all be large media markets in which Edge would be a featured player on offense.
3. Jamal Lewis, Baltimore
Will the real Jamal Lewis, please stand up? After a 2000 yard season, Lewis showed the effects incarceration as he slipped to a dismal 906 yards and 3 touchdowns. On a team that needed an effective runner to take the pressure off of Kyle Boller, Lewis consistently came up short. Lewis is a big back (245 lbs) whose strength is his tremendous feet and balance. His legs constantly move, even when met with multiple tacklers. He isn't a burner, but he has very good cut back ability, and enough speed to break the occasional long run. More than a glorified fullback, Lewis is agile and has excellent vision. Lewis is a below average receiver who would not fit will in a west coast offensive scheme.
GOOD FITS: Baltimore, Cleveland, Green Bay, Carolina, Minnesota
EARLY PICK: Wherever he ends up, Lewis will have to play at a discount. His off the field problems coupled with their effect on his on the field play will both be red flags for any team that considers bringing him on board. Baltimore will likely keep Lewis, but for much less money than Im sure he expected to sign for this season. Should Ahman Green leave GB, he might be a good fit there, where his style would adapt well to the cold weather, and the possibility of off the field trouble would be greatly diminished. Carolina and Minnesota are candidates for any top tier running back, while Cleveland may wish to sign him simply to prevent him from racking up his usual 200 yards a game against them.
4. DeShaun Foster, Carolina
Another exceptional athlete who has become an injury risk. At 222 lbs, Foster is bigger than most people think, and couples that size with very good speed. He runs a tad upright, but compensates for that with excellent vision and cutback ability, thus limiting the shots he takes. However, he hasn't demonstrated he can be a workhourse back, and when he gets tired, tends to take more abuse than he does early in the game. An average ball catcher, he has struggled with fumble problems as well, and could quickly become a liability if he can't control those problems. Showed he might be ready to take the leap to elite status with 150 yards in his first playoff game, but followed that up with a broken leg in his next game.
GOOD FITS: Carolina, Baltimore, Minnesota, Indianapolis, Arizona, San Francisco, Philadelphia
EARLY PICK: Foster could prove to be a steal, and his latest injury will likely make him affordable to most teams. While he would fit well with teams like Philly or Minnesota, it is more than likely that he will attempt to cash in on his promise as a feature back with a desperate team like Zona or San Fran.
5. Ahman Green, Green Bay
Green was once an elite back, who brought the complete package to the table. When he is healthy, he posseses game breaking speed, along with a willingness to lower his pads and take on multiple tacklers. He lacks in the more specialized areas, showing a disdain for blocking, and on occasion, an inability to maintain control of the football. However, he makes up for it with the ability to both carry the load out of the backfield, and add another reciever to the mix once in the open field. He has soft hands and excellent vision, with the first step ability to outrun defenders. Obviously, he is a huge risk, having been had numerous injury problems the past two seasons. At 28, he may be on the steep down side of this career, and any team bringing him on board would be wise to handcuff him with a young backup.
GOOD FITS: Green Bay, Minnesota, Arizona, Cleveland
EARLY PICK: Feel free to add any of the aforementioned teams to this list, but he makes the most sense in one of these four cities, where he could be a bargain as a feature back, with the insurance of a young back already in the mix. If his knees can take it, he would likely excel in Minnesota where the turf would play to his strength. In Arizona or Cleveland, he would be worth the risk, as both teams have other alternatives should he falter. Wherever Green goes, he will have to take an incentive-laden deal.

OTHER FREE AGENTS OF NOTE:
Antowain Smith, New Orleans: Getting older, but still a decent alternative when other players dont pan out. Doesnt have the same speed he was blessed with as a first round pick 9 years ago, but makes up for that with a more aggressive running style than in years past. Not likely to get you 150 yards on a given day, he can be counted on for 20 carries and 80 hard fought yards when called upon. Perfect for a team like the Texans where a solid veteran backup to Reggie Bush would be ideal. Especially one with local roots.
Najeh Davenport, Green Bay: A year ago I considered Davenport a sleeper to excel this season as a feature back. While I thought that would occur in Carolina (from where he is from) instead, he got a shot when Ahman Green went down in Green Bay. However, he immediately got hurt, and is now looking at fewer options than he had previously. However, he is now unrestricted, and the luster has not completely warn off, as teams still see him as a potential starter. I expect he will get a shot elsewhere, should the Packers keep Green, as he may have been passed on the depth chart by 2005 surprise Sam Gado.
Maurice Morris, Seattle: Morris is actually good enough that some in Seattle see more value in keeping him as the starter rather than the reigning MVP, Shaun Alexander. Morris is more elusive, and faster than Alexander, though he does run tentatively on the interior. Unfortunately, he isnt fast enough to consistently run outside, so he must develop a tougher inside running game if he wishes to move to the next level. His future will likely be decided after Alexander's.
Michael Bennett, Minnesota: His technique is still unrefined, but Bennet is a burner. One of the few backs in the game who has the possibility of breaking a run on every play. Rumors have Denny Green hoping to reunite with Bennett in Arizona. Very likely considering the Vikings are moving in a different direction at numerous positions, and will probably not match the deal Arizona puts together.
Verron Haynes, Pittsburgh: A real sleeper, hasn't gotten much of a chance to carry the ball in Pittsburgh, but he is the perfect complementary runner. Much like Smith above, he would fit well with any team using a young running back who would like the supplement them with a physical runner with good feel inside. Likely to remain in Pitt, but will get more attention than many would expect.

2006 NFL Free Agents:
Quarterback
By: Thomas J Gersey
1. Drew Brees, San Diego
After a shaky introduction to the NFL, Brees has become one of the pre-eminant passers in the league. Brees is the prototypical pocket passer, with excellent touch and an above average arm. Couple with that his ability to move outside the pocket and throw on the run, and there are few throws Brees can't make. He doesn't have the hose to get the ball down the field, but he can make the throws to the outside that must be made in today's NFL. Brees is not a superior athlete, but he maximizes the talents he does possess. WIthin 20 yards, he is deadly accurate, but his ball tends to sail as he attempts deeper throws. Brees is smart and adaptable, and has grown into his role as a leader. He can lead the Chargers, or any other talented team, to the Super Bowl, and will soon get a contract that demonstrates so.
GOOD FITS: Dallas, Miami, NY Jets, Oakland
EARLY PICK: The Chargers will not franchise Brees and it is now unlikely he will return to San Diego. Expect Brees, a Texas native, to get a lot of attention from the Cowboys, who seem to have soured on Drew Henson as the quarterback of the future. Miami has a huge hole at quarterback, and the Dolphins may be attractive to Brees, who will likely want to play for another up and coming team.
2. Jon Kitna, Cincinnati
Once looked at as future star in Seattle, Kitna developed into a more than adequate starting quarterback in Cincinnati, even putting together an MVP quality season two years ago. When Carson Palmer became a super star, Kitna suddenly become expendable. However, following Palmer's knee injury in the play offs, Kitna suddenly became indispensable. 33 years old, Kitna is not the long term solution anywhere, but he is more than capable of holding down the fort while another young quarterback develops. Kitna is a very good leader, and players rally around him. He throws a very good deep ball, letting the receiver run under it. His decision making has developed into above average, though he could still improve on recognition in the pocket. He is slightly slow of foot, and is more confortable between the tackles, exposing him on a team with a below average line.
GOOD FITS: NY Jets, Cincinnati, New Orleans, Houston, Detroit
EARLY PICK: It really depends on what Kitna wants, and how badly the Bengals want to bring him back. It is likely they will want to keep him as a security blanket for Palmer, who has suddenly become a question mark. Teams like New Orleans, Houston, and the Jets, all plan on playing young quarterbacks this up coming season, but quarterbacks who will be on a short leash. If Kitna is ok being a back up with a good chance of stepping in, any of those franchises may be a good fit.
3. Jeff Garcia, Detroit
At 35, Garcia's days as a premier starting quarterback appear to be behind him. However, in this free agent class, he still possesses enough skills to be a valuable backup. He is a former Pro Bowl calibur QB with a career 60% completion percentage. He has a quick release, and picks up the blitz well, making him valuable to a young team with an inexperienced line. He is still mobile, despite his age and injuries, though isn't the threat to scramble he once was. He is best suited to a team that relies on the short passing game, as his deep throws lack range and accuracy. While Kitna is a likely backup with starter ability, Garcia will be best suited backing up a young quarterback, where he will only be called on in an emergency. He is the consummate professional who can play at a high level in a pinch.
GOOD FITS: Minnesota, Philadelphia, Detroit, Houston, Oakland, San Francisco, NY Giants, New Orleans, Buffalo
EARLY PICK: In all honesty, where Garcia goes is anyone's guess right now. Once the QB carousel stops, Garcia will know where he fits in alot better. It is possible Detroit will bring him back for another year, though the Lions are likely to want to distance themselves from everything related to the past two seasons. A place like Philadelphia or New York makes alot of sense, where a veteran backup like Garcia could really keep either team in the playoff hunt were the starter to be injured. Teams like Houston, Oakland, SF, and NO would look to Garcia as an insurance policy for their young signal callers.
4. Josh McCown, Arizona
With the recent signing of Kurt Warner for three years, it appears that Josh McCown's status as the future of the Cardinals has come to an abrupt end. Physically, McCown is very gifted. He is big, with a strong pocket presence; yet he is also very mobile for a man his size. He can throw on the run effectively, and is able to make the tough throws to the outside. He has developed the confidence to be a leader in the huddle, though at 26 he is still developing those skills. He often relies too much on his physical gifts, instead attempting to bail himself out with athletic plays. When it doesn't work, he is apt to make costly mistakes at the most inopportune times. He would be a perfect fit for a team looking to groom a new starter behind an established veteran nearing the end of their career.
GOOD FITS: Kansas City, NY Jets, Miami, Dallas, Minnesota, Tennessee
EARLY PICK: McCown isn't the commodity he was a year ago, but he is still a gifted quarterback whom someone will take a chance on. He would be an absolute perfect fit in Kansas City where Trent Green is showing signs of slowing down. Green's backup is Todd Collins who McCown is already 10 times better than. Teams like the Jets or Dallas would bring him in to compete with similarly talented players, while Minnesota could groom him for the following season behind Brad Johnson were Culpepper to be traded.
5. Chris Simms, Tampa Bay (RFA)
Only this low because he is restricted, and Tampa can match any offer. However, it really appeared as if Simms finally started to "get it" last season. A top prospect since he was in high school, he has never lived up to the hype that always acoompanied him. A real "timing QB," once Simms gets into a rhythm, he can carry a team for multiple quarters. If a defense can rattle him, he is prone to bad throws, as he is apt to not see defenders and throw costly picks. He throws a very nice deep ball, with a tight spiral, that fast receivers can easily run under. He is still working on his accuracy underneath, and he doesn't have tremendous zip on the ball either, though he does display nice touch. His is big, with excellent mechanics, and at age 25, appears to have a future as a franchise quarterback.
GOOD FITS: Oakland, Miami, Dallas, Kansas City
EARLY PICK: It doesn't appear that Tampa is going to let Simms get away, and will match any offer, even though it means having two starting quarterbacks (Brian Griese is also under contract). However, if a team were to break the bank on his potential, Tampa may simply be unable to afford him, and will happily turn to Griese and Cadillac Williams to lead the offense. A team like Oakland, with nothing to lose, may be willing to spend that kind of money, though it's not likely.

I'd be all for that. Seriously, I can't see a reason not to get that done.
Yeah, I wasn't kidding. He would be a nice improvement.
So, Bentley and Runyan are "fits" in Philly, as well as Shaun Alexander, Edgerrin James, and DeShaun Foster. Also Jeff Garthia... but not Steve Hutchinson? Whatever.

Yeah, I should have put that in there as a note or somehting. The guy does seem like he is off a bit on his "who fits where", but I thought it gave a decent breakdown of each guy, plus shed some light on some of the lesser known free agents.

Over $6.5M for a guard?
I don't how much Wahle and Rivera got last year per year, but I know that Wahle got an 8M bonus and Rivera got 9M. Presently, Larry Allen IS THE ONLY GUARD to make over 6M per year.
Lions franchise OT Jeff Backus (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2341906)
One less guy for teams to go after not named Runyan.
Quote
By using the franchise tag, the Lions severely limit Backus' potential mobility in free agency. It also means the team has made him a one-year qualifying offer of $6.983 million for 2006. If Backus opts to sign the one-year offer, that salary is guaranteed. The two sides can also negotiate a long-term contract.
Seven million.......wow.
QuoteBroncos | Team has decision to make with Putzier
Thu, 23 Feb 2006 06:17:36 -0800
Bill Williamson, of the Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos TE Jeb Putzier is due a $1.5 million roster bonus in early March and a base salary of $1.5 million for the 2006 season. His agent, Joe Linta, said he has not heard whether Denver will exercise the option. The Broncos could attempt to restructure the deal. If no agreement is reached, they could release Putzier. Last season Putzier split time with TE Stephen Alexander. "If Denver does exercise the option, I would hope they'd give him the chance to catch 60, 70 balls and become a Pro Bowl-caliber tight end I know he can be," Linta said. Putzier's contract is likely to be addressed next week.
I'd take Putzier on this team.
Well, so much for adding this fragile back to the Eagles stable of fragile backs.....

Panthers' Foster named transition player, to get $5M next year
Feb. 23, 2006
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers protected running back DeShaun Foster from free agency Thursday by naming him their transition player.
Foster is now guaranteed $5.13 million next season if he doesn't sign a long-term contract. Foster can still talk to other teams when the NFL's free agent period starts next Thursday, but the transition tag gives Carolina the right to match any offer.
If the Panthers choose not to match any offer Foster might receive, they would not receive any compensation if Foster signed elsewhere.
Carolina has until March 17 to reach a long-term deal with Foster. If no deal is reached at that point, they will have to wait until July before beginning negotiations with Foster again.
David Dunn, Foster's agent, was not immediately available for comment.
Foster led the Panthers this year with 879 yards and two touchdowns on 205 attempts in 2005 and ranked second on the team with 34 catches for 372 yards and one touchdown. He had hit his stride during the playoffs, but broke his leg in the second half of Carolina's win over Chicago and missed the NFC championship.
A second-round draft choice from UCLA in 2002, he has played in 33 games with 10 starts in four NFL seasons and has rushed for 1,563 yards and four touchdowns on 377 carries.
The Panthers will likely release running back Stephen Davis in the coming weeks. Davis had major knee surgery last year and lost his starting job to Foster.
Another bust....(Little info on Moulds at the bottom too)

Former first-round pick Williams released by Bills
Feb. 23, 2006
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Offensive lineman Mike Williams was released by the Bills on Thursday, ending an disappointing four-year tenure in Buffalo for the former No. 4 draft pick.
The move allows the Bills to save more than $3 million in salary cap space for next season. Williams had two years left on his contract, was due a $3 million roster bonus in July and was scheduled to count about $10.8 million against the cap next season.
"Salary cap issues certainly fit into that," general manager Marv Levy told Buffalo's WIVB-TV, while attending the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. "There's some difficult decisions that have to be made and we would like to address them early if we can. ... It's never fun to release a player."
Williams' agent, David Dunn, declined comment.
Williams' release did not come as a surprise because of his hefty salary and his history of sporadic performances. Last year was his worst. He lost his starting job at right tackle to undrafted free agent Jason Peters midway through the season.
Attempts to convert Williams into a left guard failed when he hurt his back, an injury that forced him to miss the final five games of the season.
In four seasons, Williams started 47 games.
His future was in question in Buffalo even before team president Tom Donahoe was fired in January and coach Mike Mularkey resigned a week later.
Levy, who replaced Donahoe, also questioned Williams' ability and work ethic as recently as last week.
A former star at Texas, Williams was the first offensive lineman selected in the 2002 draft.
The solid run blocker struggled in pass situations, a knock that prevented the team from using him at left tackle -- a more demanding position.
Williams' off-field problems led to further questions.
He was fined by the team after being unexcused for a training camp session in 2004. Williams, who also missed numerous optional minicamps earlier that spring, cited undisclosed personal reasons for missing practice.
On his way to a home game against Houston in 2003, Williams flipped his truck and hurt his shoulder, forcing him to miss the game.
Williams' release comes a day after the Bills designated cornerback Nate Clements their franchise player, retaining his rights by offering him a $5.89 million contract.
The Bills also must determine whether to retain veteran receiver Eric Moulds, who is scheduled to make $10.8 million in the final year of his contract next season. Levy has expressed interest in attempting to restructure Moulds' contract.
Moulds' adviser, Greg Johnson, said this week that Moulds, who completed his 10th season with the Bills, would like to stay in Buffalo but only if a fair deal can be achieved.
"I think Eric would like to stay. He's big on loyalty," Johnson said. "But it's got to make good sense for both parties. It's got to be truly, truly a win-win situation."
The 49ers released Johnnie Morton.
Get Cuba Gooding, Jr!
If that idiot Moulds wants to stay and lose with JP Losman and Kelly Holcumb, then all the power to him.
I seriously doubt he sticks around. He's probably just trying to repair his rep a bit. 10+ Mil is a serious cap hit, and I don't think the Bills have in the plans.
bye bye hutchinson too...why even have free agency this year

QuoteMoulds rejects Bills' offer to restructure deal
NFL.com wire reports
BUFFALO, N.Y. (Feb. 27, 2006) -- Eric Moulds rejected the Buffalo Bills' offer for restructuring his hefty contract, a decision that could lead the team to release its veteran star receiver by as early as this week.
"Based on what they're proposing, I guess it's not encouraging," Moulds' agent Harry Henderson told The Associated Press by telephone following a meeting with team officials. "We're way off. ... Our attitude has been optimistic, but realistically it may not happen."
Moulds, a 10-year veteran and the team's senior player, has two years left on his contract, scheduled to count $10.85 million against the salary cap next season. His salary would represent about one-ninth of the projected cap, a figure the Bills deem far too expensive.
Unless a new deal can be reached, the Bills would have little choice but to cut Moulds, which would save the team about $5.5 million in cap room. His release could come as early as this week, prior to the NFL's free-agency period, which is scheduled to open March 3. The Bills declined comment except to confirm that a meeting took place between the team and Moulds' representatives.
Buffalo's first-round pick in the 1996 draft, Moulds is a three-time Pro Bowl selection and ranks second on the team in several career receiving categories.
Henderson said no further talks are scheduled but added he is open to negotiations and would like to cooperate with the team in an attempt to keep Moulds in Buffalo. Henderson wouldn't provide details of the Bills' offer or what his client would be willing to accept.
"We're open," he said. "Good football teams find ways to keep their best players."
Henderson wouldn't entirely rule out Moulds accepting a pay cut, but said: "Eric is under contract so we have a deal. It's the Bills that want to change."
Moulds is coming off a down season but still led the team with 81 catches for 816 yards in 15 games. He was suspended for one game by former coach Mike Mularkey for conduct detrimental to the team after an apparent sideline dispute with an assistant coach.
The suspension, which came in Week 14, didn't affect Moulds' performance down the stretch. He returned in top form, finishing with 27 catches for 305 yards and a touchdown in the final three games.
Dick Jauron has taken over as coach following Mularkey's sudden resignation last month, while Marv Levy is the Bills' new general manager replacing Tom Donahoe. Both previously expressed hope the team could reach a deal to keep Moulds.
Moulds has been a full-time starter since his third season in Buffalo. In 154 games, he has 675 catches for 9,096 yards and 48 touchdowns. Only Andre Reed has more catches (941) and yards (13,095) among Bills receivers.
The Bills offense struggled last season, contributing to the team's 5-11 finish.
Buffalo gained 4,122 yards, a franchise low in a 16-game season. The team's six touchdowns rushing, 1,607 yards rushing and 2,515 yards passing were all the second fewest for a 16-game season.

Bentley is considered one of the top linemen available and would give the Vikings valuable versatility. QuoteTop lineman Shields might be cap casualty
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com
Thirteen-year veteran guard Will Shields, one of the most celebrated offensive linemen in recent NFL history and a fixture in the Kansas City community during his long career with the Chiefs, could be a salary cap casualty if his contract for 2006 is not readjusted.
Chiefs officials have been discussing with Shields and his representative various scenarios to reduce his cap figure for 2006, the final season of his current deal. Shields is scheduled to earn a $5.1 million base salary, and is due a $400,000 roster bonus, and he carries a 2006 cap charge of $6.67 million.
Like many teams in the league, the Chiefs may have to make some roster moves to get into compliance with a 2006 cap projected to be $95 million-$96 million. The Tuesday breakdown of negotiations that would have extended the league's collective bargaining agreement, and the resultant likelihood that 2007 will be played as a so-called "uncapped" year, only makes that task more difficult.
Shields, 34, may have to weigh the advantages of staying in Kansas City, even at less money, against the prospect of being cast into an uncertain free agent market, one in which teams are expected to proceed with great caution and in which it could be impossible to meet players' financial expectations. Shields has deep roots now in the Kansas City community and leaving the Chiefs, the only franchise for which he has ever played during his stellar career, could be difficult.
A major component of one of the NFL's premier blocking units, Shields has been selected for 11 straight Pro Bowl games, and is one of the most respected players in the league. He has never missed a game, has appeared in 208 contests, and started all but one of them. The former Nebraska star has played in more game than any non-kicker in franchise history.
In addition to his contributions on the field, Shields has been a strong presence off field in Kansas City and he received the NFL's prestigious "Man of the Year" award in January 2004.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Quarterback Chris Simms agreed to a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wednesday.
The signing comes two days before Simms would have become a restricted free agent and allows the Bucs to keep the quarterback who started the last 10 games in the 2005 season after starter Brian Griese went down with a knee injury.
Terms of the contract were not released by the team.
Simms, drafted by the Bucs in 2003, won six of his 10 starts and led the team to an NFC South championship. He completed 191-of-313 passes for 2,035 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
In a playoff game against Washington, the 25-year-old Simms set new team postseason records by completing 25 passes on 38 attempts

Updating previous reports, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports TE Jeb Putzier was not a favorite of Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan. The team released him prior to having to pay him a $1.5 million roster bonus.
That's damn hard to do considering this is the same guy who drafted Clarrett and is interested in TO.
No shtein.
And the Jets signed Putzier to an offer sheet last year and the Broncos matched it too.
I call bullshtein on that one.
If he didn't like him no way he matches the $12.5M contract that the Jets offered.
From Spew:
QuoteI don't have a wish list ... but I like Putzier a lot. I think you wait to see who is available when the smoke clears. Certainly, there are going to plenty of options. I think, obviously, there will be a lot of talent. The landscape is changing and the Eagles will have a lot of players to pick from.

Everyone knows he likes to draft on the lines, but that doesn't mean draft a RB, WR, LB, or TE is an impossibility. I think it's very likely a position that isn't on the lines will be drafted this year. More likely than not.
So, if nothing gets done at the last minute meeting, what time does the shtein hit the fan today? 4pm?
they extended the deadline to terminate contracts, you have to do it by 10pm
Dammit. I'll be playing cards and not apying attention by then.
what many "experts" think will happen is that the NFL and NFLPA will agree that they still have a chance to get the deal done and they will extend the deadline to get the CBA extended.

The media is dedicating this season to Scruffy for Favre, even though he's not sure he'll play. Meanwhile, Carolina cheerleaders are still gnawing away at each other in the bathroom.

I'm shocked that the Jints gave him the low tender. They're stupid. This guy is a special teams STUD.
The Eagles should do everything to acquire a #6 pick and bring him in here. I'm not bullshteintin. He would be a specail teams mainstay for years. Dameane Douglas & Sean Morey x 100.
the Giants would probably match anything the Eagles offer, no? this is probably their way of letting the market set his value.

Cowboys | Campbell doubtful to re-sign
Fri, 3 Mar 2006 13:26:52 -0800
Mac Engel, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys TE Dan Campbell is doubtful to re-sign with the team and will likely hit the free agent market. Leonard Roth, Campbell's agent, said there is "less than a five percent chance" that Campbell would return to Dallas.
There. Right there. Blocking TE who can catch. One more step towards having an offense that can run the ball. Ever. Done.

The Seahawks are close to a deal to re-sign free agent Shaun Alexander, the NFL MVP and rushing champion, before he hits the open market, which right now is scheduled to be at 12:01 tonight. He's likely to get between $12 million-$15 million in guaranteed money. Seattle, by previous agreement, could not use its franchise tag on Alexander. He's an irreplaceable part for the Seahawks and they are the best fit for him. The contract could be announced tomorrow.
Rams to release Isaac Bruce today??
Quote
Bruce quietly agreed to contract renegotiations a couple of times in the past, most recently in 2002. But on those occasions, the Rams merely shifted money around to create immediate cap relief. This time, the team is asking him to take a significant pay cut.
The team is offering Bruce $9 million over three years, including $5 million this season in the form of roster bonus and signing bonus, according to league sources.
But without an extension, Bruce is due $8.1 million alone in 2006 under his current contract - the last year of a seven- year deal signed in 2000. That $8.1 million breaks down as follows: the $1.5 million roster bonus; $6.5 million in base salary; and a $100,000 offseason workout bonus.
So Bruce would make $3.1 million less this season under the extension. And in essence, he would be playing the entire three years of the Rams' proposal for only $900,000 more than he's scheduled to make this year alone under the old contract. (The $8.1 million in '06 compared to the $9 million, three-year proposal.)
Minnesota, per the local Miny paper, is supposedly interested in bringing in Drew Brees.

I showed this to Gints fans, they were OUTRAGED about the low ender to Tyree. I agree, he would be a great add to our roster.
Hell yeah. The only trouble is would Reid take a chance on him and would they deem him important enough to front load a deal to force the Jints to not match? He was arrested awhile back for weed. But that didn't keep Buck off the team.

I assume a Tyree signing would mean the end of McMullen (WR+ST). Also, who knows what the (injury recovery) status of Pinkston will be.
...depends on what he was arrested for. If it's assault or smokin, ok. but if it's hiding in bushes naked, no way!
He got pinched for weed, I believe. In upstate NY.
If they did get Tyree, then my boy Billy Mac would be outta here.
But the thing is...the Eagles do not have a 6th round pick. They'd have to trade for one (maybe Hollis?) so they could get him. The Skins did this a few years ago when they signed RFA Chad Morton from the Jets. They didn't have the right pick so they traded with NE to get the correct round to give it to the Jets.

Kitna may be moving on
BY MARK CURNUTTE | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
There's little chance Jon Kitna will re-sign with the Bengals.
With the New York Jets at the front of an active market for his services, Kitna very well might get his chance to start again at quarterback.
Kitna might sign relatively quickly if free agency begins as scheduled at 12:01 a.m. Monday, and the Bengals probably would strike quickly to sign a third healthy quarterback for spring and summer field work.
Kitna threw for single-season career highs in touchdowns (26) and yards (3,591) as a starter for Cincinnati in 2003, then gracefully accepted the backup role to Carson Palmer.
"I was OK with (a backup role) the first year (2004)," Kitna said Friday. "Last year, it started in training camp - that desire, the competitive nature, was there."
He said his religious faith is calling him to new work.
"Our ministry in Cincinnati was far greater than I could have expected," he said. "I'm looking forward to the next phase. We did a lot of teen-age Bible study here. The Lord's calling us to do a couple's ministry on a new team."
Kitna and his wife, Jennifer, had their fourth child, a son, after the end of the season.
"It's kind of a transition, a break for my family," said Kitna, a Bengal for the past five seasons. "It's bigger than football."
The Kitna market is so hot that the Baltimore Ravens are expected to back out because they don't want to get into a bidding war.
What the farg is this guy talking about??
He's a Christian cuckoo. I don't know how well the Mormons and the Born Agains get along. Andy might not like having someone steal his evangelic thunder.
He's going to the Skins for less money, obviously.

Washington and Detroit are interested in Bruce?
What? Why?
Washington: has no receivers besides Moss
Detroit: Rogers is off the radar at this point, Roy Williams is oft-injured and soft (I blame UT), and Mike Williams is unproven... plus they have the Martz connection
It's all part of Matt Millen's master offseason plan. Sign Bruce, use the #9 pick on the highest rated WR, sign a backup QB. Guys a genius.
Ah, yes. I forgot about the Martz connection.
Here's an idea for Matt Millen...quit collecting WRs. Just re-sign Mrs. Eckel and everything will be golden.
And Washington just signed David Patten. We were told by the Skins lovers that he would be a stud. Him, Taylor Jacobs and James Thrash would be awesome behind Santana.
It's a pity that Millen was a decent player and a decent broadcaster, because he sure is an awful GM.

QuoteMORE EVIDENCE OF TAMPERING
Bernie Wilson of The Associated Press has uncovered even more proof that tampering is occurring throughout the league in an article regarding the prospects of Chargers quarterback Drew Brees.
"We've already got things lined up, and we'll be rocking and rolling the minute the clock strikes midnight," Brees told Wilson.
"We've already got things lined up" means "we're already taking to teams" means "teams are talking to us" means "teams are tampering with me."
Although it's generally difficult if not impossible to prove tampering, the league eventually is going to make an example out of someone. So if we were the Commish, we'd tell Brees that his first trip will be to the league office to 'fess up fully and completely as to all of the "things" that have been lined up.
My best guess is that the Browns could be that team.

OT?? Played guard for the Lions
He's played every position but center on the line and someone on one board said he did pretty well at RT. It wouldn't take much to win the RT job in Dallas, so they could be looking at him as a RT/swing guy. Yippee. But hey. He's on the list of ESPN's "sleeper free agents". ::)
The contract as reported is 5 yrs, $15M, $5M signing bonus.
Evidently Fabini was in, but left without a contract. Speculation is he failed a physical, but speculation is all it is.

Most Cowboys fans thought the same considering Parcells "Knew the player." That's one reason for the speculation about the physical, because he was pretty much considered a lock.
Maybe someone informed him you don't have to sign every player that once played for him, and there's no law they have to be over 30.

Quotetaterskins | More about Randle El contract
Sun, 12 Mar 2006 15:41:35 -0800
ESPN.com's Michael Smith reports Washington taterskins WR Antwaan Randle El's contract with the taterskins is actually a seven-year, $31 million deal that is voidable after the sixth year. It also included $11.5 million in bonuses.
TE Christian Fauria (Patriots) officially a taterskin.
QuoteASHBURN, VA – The Washington taterskins announced today that they have signed tight end Christian Fauria. Terms of contract were not disclosed. Fauria is an experienced veteran that will add immediate depth to the taterskins offense.
Fauria, 6-4, 250 lbs., has played in 167 games with 119 starts during his 11-year NFL career. During that time span he has recorded 245 receptions for 2,473 yards and 20 touchdowns. He spent the previous four seasons with the New England Patriots, where he was a member of the Super Bowl XXXVIII and XXXIX championship teams.
Prior to joining the Patriots, he spent seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Fauria played in all 16 games (starting 10) in 2005 finishing the year with eight catches for 57 yards and two touchdowns.
Fauria began his NFL career as a second round (39th overall) selection by the Seattle Seahawks in the 1995 NFL Draft. As a rookie he played in 14 games, with 12 starts, and caught 17 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown.
Fauria played at the University of Colorado where he finished his career with 98 catches for 1,058 yards and 12 touchdowns. The 98 catches ranked him fourth all-time in school history while the 1,058 yards ranked him ninth all-time. He was named first-team all Big 8 and third-team All-American as a senior. Fauria is a native of Northridge, California where he attended Crespi High School.
motherfargin goddamn christ!! the taterskins get randel el, lovely. what the farg are we doing? we need a veteran WR, case fargin closed. this has been pure hell so far.
Randle El sucks.
Anyways...Mike Anderson just signed with Baltimore for 4 years $8M. >:(
What the farg is going on Eagles? Are you frickin kidding me?
this is truly unbelievable...how are they going to explain moderate team additions while going into the season 20 million under the cap?
It's simple:
"The fans don't understand what goes into the salary cap. We will use the money to extend our own free agents, among other things. We are spending money, the fans just don't realize it."
There are still good RBs out there.
I wanted Anderson though.
Good RBs that we won't sign. 4 years 8 million is a bargain basement price. Why couldn't the Eagles do this? Why can't they do anything? This is a sick joke. Is it possible that Lurie feels he got farged over on the CBA agreement so he doesn't want to spend any money?
Isn't Davenport a free agent?
who is still out there?
Anderson was perfect, a WCO running back, who could play some fullback and is a good pass blocker. in other words, exactly what they needed.
Davenport is a whack job with an injury. Not that I wouldn't love him but the Eagles' FO making a big play for him isn't in the cards.
Najeh Davenport
Verron Haynes
Maurice Morris
Jonathan Wells
And there are a few guys in the draft who would be nice pickups.
you're right those are decent names.
i just can't get excited about anything free agency right now, this weekend has been a disaster
Yep...it sure has.
The only thing that I am hoping for is that these other guys have overpriced themselves and that is why we haven't heard a peep about Runyan, Peterson and others visiting teams.
And we have to hope that once their asking price goes down and the market levels out...the Eagles make some moves.
Just look at the Colts -- Polian straight up said they won't be active for 3 weeks because of the overinflation of the market.
Thats all we have o hope for -- that they will get active. Start the day out tomorrow by getting Howard. That is a HUGE signing if they get him.

John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the Houston Texans spent Sunday, March 12, meeting with free agent WR David Givens (Patriots). Givens reportedly wants $25 million over five years and that's out of the Texans' price range. Late Saturday night, March 11, the Texans said Boston-based agent Brad Blank informed them that Givens was going to re-sign with the New England Patriots. This morning, Givens came to Houston as scheduled, told the Texans there had been some miscommunication and that he was definitely interested. They still haven't given up on him, but the price is too high.

A nugget from PFT re: Hutchinson's contract. Take it for what it's worth.
QuoteA league source tells us that the offer sheet signed by Seahawks guard Steve Hutchinson with the Minnesota Vikings contains a poison pill of unprecedented magnitude and significance, which is aimed at preventing Seattle from exercising its right to match the deal, pursuant to the rules applicable to transition players.
Apart from a 2006 cap number that exceeds $13 million, the offer sheet contains a provision that makes the entire deal guaranteed if Hutchinson at any point becomes anything other than the highest paid player on the team.

QuoteMoulds to Bills: 'Trade me or release me'
Associated Press
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Veteran star receiver Eric Moulds asked the Buffalo Bills on Monday to release or trade him, believing the team has no intention to keep him at his current salary.
"The Bills have put us in a position where we're at Option Z, and Option Z is to ask to be released," Moulds' personal adviser, Greg Johnson, told The Associated Press. "It's a sad day. And we wish things could've worked out, but it's just not working out."
Moulds, a 10-year veteran and the Bills' senior player, has two years left on his contract. He's scheduled to make about $7.1 million next season and count about $10.85 million against the salary cap.
Moulds twice has rejected the team's request to take what Johnson referred to as "a substantial pay cut." Johnson said the two sides are at a stalemate in finding other ways to reduce the player's salary cap hit.
"We feel like we're absolutely going nowhere," said Johnson, adding he also would consider the team trading Moulds. "We respectfully disagree with the Buffalo Bills."
Bills general manager Marv Levy said in a statement: "Our intention remains to keep Eric as a part of our team."
Moulds did not immediately return a message left at his home.
Johnson said it's his opinion that Moulds has played his last game for the Bills. He didn't rule out Moulds refusing to attend the team's spring minicamp sessions.
Johnson said he first asked the Bills to release Moulds during conversations with team officials on Friday. He delayed going public with the announcement to see if there were any developments during the first days of the NFL's free agency period, which opened Saturday.
The Bills signed three free agents over the weekend, including receiver Andre' Davis, a four-year veteran who spent last season with New England. Although he's had 23 starts in 48 career games, Davis is expected to compete for a secondary job behind Lee Evans, who would become the Bills' top receiver if Moulds was released.
Johnson said he believes the Bills are going to release Moulds at some point this offseason and he would rather have the team make the move now to allow the player to begin searching for a new team.
"I think Eric is due that respect by the Buffalo Bills," Johnson said. "We need to find out what his fair market value is and we're going to determine that by finding what other teams out there are willing to pay him. ... We'll never determine that if we just continue to go back and forth with the Buffalo Bills."
NFL teams generally attempt to fill their rosters in the first month of free agency, leaving them with less money to spend under the cap later in the offseason.
Moulds, who ranks second in numerous franchise receiving categories, would become the highest-profile receiver on the free agent market this offseason.
He's coming off a down season, in part because of Buffalo's overall offensive struggles, but still led the team with 81 catches for 816 yards in 15 games.
Buffalo's first-round pick in the 1996 draft, Moulds has been a full-time starter since his third season. In 154 games, he has 675 catches for 9,096 yards and 48 touchdowns. Only Andre Reed has more catches (941) and yards (13,095) among Bills receivers.

QuoteThe Titans and receiver David Givens have agreed on money....
"I am definitely leaning toward the Titans, you can say that,'' Givens said last night. "I had a good visit with the Coach (Jeff) Fisher and the rest of the coaches. I came in here exhausted from the last couple of days, but everything really went well. I like the system they have and the ideas that they have as far as utilizing me as a player. ... They made me feel comfortable here. It seems like a good fit.''
Givens said he expects to make his decision official this morning after talking with his family and agent Brad Blank last night. Givens yesterday ruled out the Dolphins and Texans, two teams he visited over the weekend.
Well...gotta hope that Walker is on the block for real and that Moulds is cut.
And a poster on the EMB said it was reported on the radio. But even without that -- this seems to suggest that its a done deal.

QuoteGivens gets $8M bonus, chance to be No. 1 WR
By Michael Smith
ESPN.com
Wide receiver David Givens has signed with the Tennessee Titans for five years, $24 million, with an $8 million signing bonus.
His old team, the New England Patriots, and the Houston Texans also made offers. He visited Miami first but there was no offer from the Dolphins.
In the end it came down to New England (emotional ties) and Tennessee, but the Titans had the edge because they gave Givens an opportunity to be the No. 1 receiver.
Michael Smith is a senior NFL writer for ESPN.com.
That's not that expensive at all, really. Much better player than Brandon Lloyd, for instance.

QuoteKitna agrees to four-year deal with Lions
By John Clayton
ESPN.com
Jon Kitna made the first move Tuesday for what will be a busy day for NFL quarterbacks by agreeing to a four-year deal with the Detroit Lions.
Terms of the four-year contract weren't available, Kitna visited the Jets and Lions and was under consideration by the Ravens. He sensed something was going to happen with another team over the weekend when he told the Bengals he would not be returning.
In response, the Bengals brought in Rams quarterback Jamie Martin for a visit.
Kitna's decision could heat up talks between the taterskins and the Jets for taterskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey. The taterskins want to move Ramsey on Tuesday in a trade. Detroit, the Jets and the Dolphins were the teams talking to the taterskins.

Blah, blah, blah, then this...
Even though the Saints will be looking at Matt Leinart in the draft, they have Brees as their starting quarterback. That puts the Saints in the position to possible trade down from the No. 2 spot and take defensive end Mario Williams or simply take the North Carolina State defensive end.
Didn't Brees just come from a nearly exact same situation in San Diego? Can you imagine if the Saints draft Leinart? That would be pure comedy.
:yay
By looking at I think it just means he'll be available at number 2, right in front of them.
FWIW, Eskin confirmed that the Packers have been calling teams to gauge interest in Javon Walker & the Eagles were one of the team's to express that they did. Of course, the Eagles don't want to give up a high draft pick, so I think we know where this is going.

The Eagles have enough money to retain Rod Hood, and they probably should. I don't even know why he's being mentioned in these trade rumors, because you have to believe they value him much more highly than the Packers do. Plus, he was a UDFA, and we know how much Andy loves them.
He played his best game of the season IMO against the Packers.
That is why I brought it up. Also we've traded a nickel corner to them in the past - Al Harris.

Yeah, I hered that.
we should get keyshawn and then see what ricky watters is up to.
Big NO on Keyshawn, for several reasons:
- He's a fleshpop.
- For a guy who has caught a lot of passes in his career, his TD totals are paltry (e.g., 2001 -- 106 catches, 1,266 yards, 1 TD).
- He's relatively slow.

QuoteJerry has money, but T.O. isn't worth a penny
By RANDY GALLOWAY
Star-Telegram Staff Writer
Watch yourself, Mr. Jones. It may not be too late for a recall election in Arlington.
I don't seem to remember Terrell Owens being mentioned in any of that campaign literature 18 months ago.
All those tax dollar millions that voters approved for the new Jerry Yard, and with seemingly half of north Arlington now being bulldozed in the land-clearing, yet ...
The Cowboys are currently being outspent in NFL free agency by the Arizona Cardinals. And, yes, the homeless New Orleans Saints.
The Irving owner sits on his wallet, while Danny Snyder in Washington repeatedly empties his hip pocket, then fills up again at the ATM machine.
Snyder is trying to win now. Even Bill Bidwill, the Phoenix tightwad, is making an effort.
As you know, the new free agency period has opened with a man-rush.
Teams are flush with salary cap space and with cash to spend. Money and players are moving like crazy.
Jones, however, appears timid and thrifty. Jerry's football guru, Big Bill, appears to be on vacation.
Since Jerry has never been one to squeeze the dime, there's a tendency to give him the benefit of the doubt on his current lack of financial involvement.
But what's the football excuse for both the owner and Bill Parcells?
Consider the roster moves thus far:
Gone are Keyshawn Johnson, Dan Campbell, La'Roi Glover and Scott Fujita. All were, at one time or another, key contributors.
Added in free agency thus far have been an offensive lineman the Detroit Lions figured as a career backup, and a linebacker from Jacksonville that the Jaguars head coach thought spent too much time on outside activities, such as charity work and his male-modeling career.
That's great, fellows. Really great.
But now, rampant speculation tells us the Cowboys are getting ready to pop the "big one."
Their free agency splash could be none other than the trashy Terrell Owens.
If this does happen, don't blame Jerry. He can't help himself when it comes to these kinds of traps.
Owens will be Parcells' poodle. If Big Bill says no on this kind of player, then it won't happen.
And if Parcells says yes, that tells us just how desperate he really is.
There's no need to rehash the ramifications of having Owens on your team.
Yes, he's the best receiver in the league. Yes, he's the worst team-guy in the league.
But while trading out Owens for Keyshawn is a football upgrade at one position, it's not worth all the soap opera it brings.
The Cowboys don't need Terrell Owens.
The Cowboys need offensive linemen. At least two of them who can play right now, and well enough to protect the quarterback, who needs plenty of protection.
Just a thought. Maybe if a rebuilt offensive line could open holes for the running game, then that would also help the quarterback.
Maybe you've heard, the Cowboys also need a kicker. And no, not some Howdy Doody who works for minimum wage. :-D Go pay for a big-time toe.
With Big Bill's 1940s offensive philosophy, a kicker is almost as important as the quarterback.
Speaking of offensive philosophy, is Parcells the dummy if he approves Owens, or is Owens the dummy if he wants to play here?
Terrell demands to have the ball thrown to him. Otherwise, he whispers that his quarterback is either gay or an Uncle Tom. That happened with his last two QBs.
Who knows what Owens would have in mind for Drew Bledsoe?
But if Bledsoe doesn't have the protection, the ball won't be going Owens' way.
And since Parcells loves for the ball to be handed off to a running back, Owens should be real pleased about being reduced to a blocking receiver.
But, of course, the Cowboys have to do "something." And speculation now centers on Terrell Owens being that something.
Even if Owens come to his senses, and signs elsewhere, it still doesn't get the Cowboys off the free agency hook.
The same theory also applies to Owens ending up here.
No matter the outcome, what needed to be done hasn't been done.
Jerry, I don't believe this is what the Arlington voters had in mind.
Let me also add that TO has apparently (as reported by Chris Mortensen) said the following two things:
That he won't accept any "behavior" clause in his contract
That he wants "big big" money up front
(I read this report on another MB)

(I read this report on another MB)
Whoo hoo. I want big money up front too. And I have a better chance of getting it that TO.
that TO stuff was on PFT last night:
QuoteT.O. PLANS TO WAIT
With receiver Terrell Owens finally on the open market, don't expect him to take the best offer that he can line up in the short term. Instead, word is that he'll wait as long as it takes to get the contract that he thinks he deserves.
The key, we believe (and we hear), is that Owens will stay put until there's an offer that makes him happy and motivated and ready to give everything he has on the field. Even if he has to wait until September, Owens won't sign until he gets the right offer.
So what will it take? It's anyone's guess, but consider the deals that recently have been signed at the receiver position. Reggie Wayne walked off with $12.5 million to sign. Antwaan Randle El reeled in $11.5 million in bonuses. David Givens got $8 million.
Happiness is a subjective term, to be sure. But we can't imagine T.O. being happy, in light of these other deals, with anything less than $15 million in guarantees.
I saw Mort say that on SC, so yeah, he's not backing down from this incentive/good behavior stuff...
Some more signings:
-- Browns sign OG Bob Hallen from San Diego
-- Peter Warrick re-signed with the Seahawks for another year
-- Stockar McDougle leaves Miami for Jacksonville

new england signed a problem child in dillon
have a boatload of money under the cap
and just lost a starting wr from a group that isnt very good to begin with
strictly my opinion but makes a lot of sense
Dillon was never a problem child on T.O.'s level and was stuck on a team that hadn't been to the playoffs and was trying to feature his eventual replacement more and more. T.O. had just enjoyed a very successful season, his first trip to a Super Bowl as a featured WR, and was heading into the 2nd year of the contract he signed.
There is no way in hell the Pats bring him in. They'd be sooner to bring in Moulds so he could get back at the Bills twice a year. NO WAY the Pats get T.O. - you heard it here first.
Dillon isn't close to TO as far as problem children go. If Dillon is a problem child, then TO is Samara.
did someone actually say that dillon was as much a problem child as TO?
what an idiot
This loser a-hole dook told me that Dan LeBatard, a Miami radio host, is reporting that Miami will sign T.O. within the next 48 hours and is looking to trade Chris Chambers. He is speculating that they might send Chambers to Philly.

Bad coaching doesn't cause him to make some of the stupid ass throws that he has made. Remember than one against Denver where he threw it with his left hand? He's a moron.
whats mcnabb then with his dallas and superbowl ints?
brooks isnt even close to as good as donovan but on a hideous team for so long with no confidence or coaching those things are going to happen
in a stable setting like the birds have as a back up not expected to do much i think hed thrive
Brooks had a good OL, Joe Horn, Donte Stallworth, and Deuce McAllister, and he still regularly blew games.
McNabb was throwing an out route to a rookie receiver who ran a 'go' against Dallas. In the Super Bowl, he far outperformed Roethlisberger's performance the next year, but Roethlisberger had a defense.
Brooks finds excuses to choke in non-pressure situations. McNabb chokes under intense pressure when he's getting very little help from his defense and/or his receivers.

the Lions signed Josh McCown. they will likely release Harrington and let Kitna and McCown compete for the starting job.
So who will sign Harrington? Wouldn't be surprised if it was AZ.
Since Millen made that move, we can pretty much guarantee that McCown is going to prove to be a flash in the pan.

Dallas CBS station is reporting that the Cowboys and Owens have come to an agreement and he will be introduced at a PC on Monday.

That's the link.
Looks fake to me. Probably their version of Gary Papa.
Dallas fans are half and half over this. Half of them hate it and the other half love it.
And then we have a Cowboys version of Art writing gay shtein:
QuoteWell, Terrell, I can only assume that now that you've agreed to sign with America's Team, your first stop will be to see what the true fans are saying on the premier Cowboy's message board: CowboysZone.com.
If so, then let me be the first to officially welcome you.
As of 15 minutes ago, I hated you, but now you're a Dallas Cowboy, a member of the greatest team ever, and I'll root for you to help my team acheive greatness.
I know you'll play with effort, but I hope you'll treat the honor of being a Cowboy with respect. I'm willing to forgive your transgressions on the Star, if and only if, you comport yourself from here on out with the honor of a Cowboy.
Welcome to Dallas... now behave! (and win!)
Loved TO when he was here....but do your thing in Big D, TO. And I don't mean play well. Tear that goddamn organization apart.
They fail to mention he mocked the cowboys on their star as an Eagle also :-D
He will not catch one TD against the Eagles in 2006. I think that's a pretty safe bet. Also he won't go over let's say... 70 yards in either game.

Yep, it looks that way. I thought it might be fake as well, but if you go to the home page http://www.klbk.com/ and click on the sports link to the left, it shows the article in its original format.

Not so fast...
REPORT OF T.O. SIGNING IS "BOGUS"
Reports originating from a Lubbock, Texas television station that receiver Terrell Owens has signed with the Cowboys are "bogus," a league source with knowledge of the situation tells us.
KLBK 13 says that sources with the Cowboys have told the station that Owens already has been signed, and that the move will be announced on Monday.
On one hand, we could envision the Cowboys intentionally leaking misinformation in order to scare off other potential suitors while owner Jerry Jones wraps up a vacation. On the other hand, why in the hell would the leak be made to a television station in Lubbock?
Bottom line -- there's no deal, and the reports are erroneous.
I know what you're saying. Lubbock's a good piece from the DFW area, and I didn't see anything on that area's CBS affiliate. Usually they share news between affiliates fairly quickly, and this one usually gets any breaking news as fast as any of them. No mention at all. http://www.cbs11tv.com/sports

Now ESPNews has Owens denying the report of his signing, so that's that for now.
"A source close to Terrell Owens is denying broadcast reports out of Lubbock Texas that he has signed with the Cowboys." Or something to that effect.
You are right about not wanting TO though.
We were naive enough to think he'd change by coming here, but we never really found out just how bad TO was until he came here. The smallest of things set TO off. Things so small you won't even believe what TO will get angry over. He's just so insecure it's laughable.

I was one of the ones that was 95% sure it was only a matter of time before he showed his colors. Gave him credit when he came back for the SB and said well, you never can tell.
Then all he put your team through? I ended up with the utmost respect for how the Eagles handled it. I honestly don't think it could have been handled much better.
The ironic thing is, we just got rid of a disruptive sulker in Antonio Bryant in 2004. I didn't think there was any way they would bring someone else (Even worse) in, but maybe with Parcells close to retiring, Jones feels the window may be closing a little before it's even all the way open.

There isn't anyone with the job. Carthon was the last to actually have the offensive coordinator title in '04, but he was more involved with the running game with Payton working on the passing game and doing some playcalling.
This year Parcells is supposed to call the plays, Todd Haley works with the passing game and Tony Sparano works with the running game.
GF, I think there's going to be delay of at least a week before he wants the new contract. I don't think the first one's been signed yet because Jerry is going to take the weekend to read Faust and brush up on making deals with the devil and how to squirm out of them.
On a lighter note, I came across this Brandon Lloyd highlight. NFC East beware!

he was making sure it wasnt picked off after he ducked and covered.
ok, whatever you say.
He should know the route anyways. If a receiver is supposed to be behind him on a deeper crossing route guess what? He should know.
In the NFL you have to know who is where.
So even if he thought it was going to a guy behind him he is a dumbass.
While he may have thought it was to someone else, most receivers would try to grab any ball in their vicinity. I've seen guys disrupt nice passes to teammates because they could reach it, especially in the red zone.
I don't think he was ducking out of fear, but he did let a pass he could have caught go without any effort. And the lack of effort there is a little disturbing.
If that pass was to him, it was a horrendous throw, and he had every right to have the split second reaction that it must be to someone else.
Jeezus, people... how homertastic can you possibly be here?

It's not unlike that throw in overall quality (lack thereof), but the location is completely different. Watters short-armed a pass that was way in front of him. This throw to Lloyd is high and behind him. I've seen Lloyd make some good catches, but that one might have been the best.

He was very lethargic and uncooperative during the sessions and Martz quickly realized Harrington had no desire to be there.

NFLPA attorney says Seahawks redo Jones' dealAssociated Press
SEATTLE -- The Seattle Seahawks have apparently maneuvered themselves into position to keep All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson, an attorney for the NFL's players' union said Monday.
Hutchinson's contract was the subject of a hearing in Philadelphia where a special master was to decide how much of the Minnesota Vikings' offer the Seahawks must match to keep Hutchinson, considered a key to Seattle's run to the Super Bowl this year.
The Vikings seven-year offer included $16 million guaranteed and would be the richest deal ever given to a guard.
But the contract also contained a provision that would guarantee the entire $49 million if Hutchinson is not the team's highest-paid offensive lineman at any time after the first year of the contract. The league and the Seahawks argued on Monday that Seattle didn't have to match that provision.
But Richard Berthelsen, an attorney for the NFL Players Association who attended the hearing, told The Associated Press that the Seahawks told the special master on Monday that the team had restructured the contract of six-time Pro Bowl tackle Walter Jones, currently Seattle's highest-paid offensive linemen, to avoid the conflict.
Jones received $54.5 million -- with up to $20 million in a signing bonus and incentives -- over seven years to remain a Seahawk last April.
Berthelsen said the Seahawks told the special master that Jones had agreed to add an eighth, voidable year to his deal. That would mean Jones' annual base salary would dip to $6.81 million -- just below Hutchinson's $7 million annual average if Seattle matched Minnesota's offer. Thus, the Seahawks would not have to guarantee the rest of Hutchinson's new deal.
The Seahawks did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment.
:-D
Good for Seattle. What a stupid provision.
it's not a stupid provision, imo. it was a clever way of Minnesota trying to steal a player, and Seattle had an even more clever way to match the offer, good stuff.
Clever? You think that's clever? I think it's desperate. If they really farging wanted Hutchinson, they'd have signed him to an offer sheet that Seattle couldn't afford.
Clever is for Romes.
Um, ok, whatever you say. I wish I could care that much.
It's nice to see that the Eagles aren't the only team in the NFL that can get outmaneuvered during free agency.

I'm not done with this one. What kind of front office hangs a mega deal for a player they supposedly REALLY want on a gimmick? Farging idiots. Must be something in the water in Minnesota turns people pit bull stupid.
If they wanted him that bad, they needed to pony up 56mil and be done with it. All this story reveals is that the Vikings still aren't ready to do business for real. What an embarrasment.

They already offered the guy the richest contract for a Guard
in the history of the NFL. What more could they have done to show they were serious about wanting Hutchinson?. They put in a clause that served as insurance for their offer... and guess what? It worked.
I don't get how on earth you can be ripping the Vikings on the move... you call them an embarrassment, but they got their mission accomplished.

I think they want to get Herremans in there and play him a lot. There has been talk that both of the Eagles OTs would not be back this year. Its either Runyan or Tra. Do I believe that? Not quite sure. But if they want Herremans in there it could lead to one of them not coming back. And if they re-sign Runyan, then Herremans stays at LT. I'm shocked Childress isn't upstairs cancelling the guys flight and telling the FO they're nuts. What the hell was he watching last year?

Childress is too busy shteinting all over Culpepper to notice McMahon is on the way to town.

Totally agreed. He's better than what they've had, but he's already shown signs of cracking (see his last kick) and I think that when he has to regularly kick outside of a dome into the swirling winds he'll see in Philly, NY and Washington could send him right off the edge.
He and TO are going to have so much gay ass sex that all of Dallas is going to smell like astroglide.

Just heard it's now official, Idiot Kicker is a Cowboy.
The only thing they talked about here yesterday on Texas ESPN radio was how the Turds should sign Vanderjagt, there is almost no way I will be able to listen now. I can guess though pretty much how it will be " Parcells is awesome, Vanderjerk is too, and the Boys are winning the SB now.
Indeed, it is insane how the masses here in the Dallas area have all of a sudden become TO's buddy and how the Cowboys are now the frontrunners for the Super Bowl. I can't wait til the Birds stomp them twice this year and crush their dreams.

I hope he does become a pro-bowler, then maybe Andy will realize that he needs to change his offensive scheme a bit.
after the season that farger had, he got $400,000 upfront. i know that's not a lot comparative to the NFL, but just think about that, he got a check for $400,000 after the way he played last year. mind numbing.
Now he can buy more Beetle Baily hats and metrosexual stuff.
upfront meaning he got a signing bonus of 400k?....or thats his salary cause the nfl minimum is around 400-500k

im guessing the upfront money is his salary this year....not in addition to

the catches and yards are really irrelevant...its all about how much he gets in the end zone...if he has double digit td's he had a great year and the rest will come...including giving indirect protection for bledsoe and helping the run game

Compared to other receivers in the league, he'll have a big year, but compared to TO's other seasons I don't think 2006 for TO will be anything groundbreaking. He's not going to play better than he did here in 2004 or 2005 until he got hurt. 2005 was on pace to be the best season of his career. He was on pace for 95+ catches and 1,500+ yards.
I expect TO to get his 70 catches and 1,000 or 1,100 yards but he's not going to drop a 1,400 on the league I'll guarantee that. Not in dallas he's not. Put him in a Colts uniform and you bet he does it, but no, not in dallas. He's a great player on a very mediocre team.
at the end of the season, TO's stats will be good, and fantasy owners everywhere will rejoice.
however, i do not think he will make the cowboys any better on a whole, which he doesnt care about anyway.
who cares....so he has 75 1100 and 11....pretty friggin good year....and most importantly dallas is a much better team with him

He made us better two years ago, it will make them better.
If he plays all 16 games this year he will have 1500+ yards and 13-16 TDs. Guaranteed.
GUARANTEED!
Then that would be his best season ever. I don't see his best season ever in dallas when he's 33 years old with that team. It's certainly possible, but IMO, not likely.
But, like he said he doesn't even matter. The Cowboys are an 8-8 team with TO even, maybe 9-7 if they are lucky. They are nothing to be worried about.

not really.
over the course of the season, he will make them marginally better. for example:
2002 Eagles - 25.9 points/game - 46 TDs (15 rush, 27 pass, 4 return)
2003 Eagles - 23.4 points/game - 44 TDs (23 rush, 17 pass, 3 return)
2004 Eagles - 24.1 points/game - 45 TDs (10 rush, 32 pass, 2 return)
***
2005 Eagles (1st seven games) - 23.3 pts/game
as a team, owens makes them marginally better. more explosive? yes. much better overall? not likely.

owens did not make the eagles that much better. they were good before. he just made them more explosive and quick strike, rather than a grind it out offense.
the eagles eagles were already a pretty good team....they dont run the ball so he wasnt able to make that part of the game better...the eagles already had a nice offfensive line so he wasnt really able to improve that...what he did was make the qb far better than he ever was

Walker 'not coming back' to Packers
Green Bay - What part of no don't the Green Bay Packers understand?
That's what Charles Goldsmith, Javon Walker's stepfather, wanted to know when he emphatically stated in a telephone interview this morning with the Journal Sentinel that the wide receiver will not ever play for the team again.
No amount of money, the passage of time or the possible retirement of quarterback Brett Favre, his adversary, will change Walker's mind, according to Goldsmith. He told general manager Ted Thompson in a 30-minute conversation Jan. 20 that his stepson was through with the Packers, but based on recent published comments from Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy, Goldsmith detected hope within the organization that the situation could be rectified.
"I wish this could have worked out better but he's not coming back," Goldsmith said. "He has so much animosity regarding Green Bay, it's ridiculous."
Goldsmith and his wife, Bernita, were in Green Bay this morning working with a real-estate agent. He said Walker's home in Green Bay, which he purchased from former Packers defensive end Jamal Reynolds about two years ago, will be on the market by Wednesday.
Walker has one year remaining on his original five-year contract with the Packers at a base salary of $1.15 million. He underwent reconstructive knee surgery Oct. 7.
According to Goldsmith, Walker has spent the off-season back and forth between Houston and Tallahassee, Fla., where he was back attending classes at Florida State. Goldsmith said his stepson is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation.
Thompson has denied a request by Walker's agent, Kennard McGuire, seeking permission to shop his client.

QuoteRETURN OF THE HAMBURGLAR
After more than a year out of the game, kicker Martin Gramatica is back in the NFL, signing with the New England Patriots.
In our view, it's less a stroke of genius than it is a measure of desperation. The move shows how bare the current kicking cupboard really is, and it makes the potential consequences of the loss of Adam Vinatieri to the Colts even more glaring.
And we're not yet ready to declare Gramatica the answer to the Pats' kicking woes, even if he still can bang the ball. Instead, it's likely a "nothin' to lose" transaction. Gramatica was, after all, one of the best kickers in the NFL earlier this decade. But he fell out of favor in Tampa not long after coach Jon Gruden arrived. Gramatica spent some time in Indy, with former Bucs coach Tony Dungy, in 2004.
The biggest question mark regarding Gramatica is whether he'll be able to kick consistently in cold weather. Indeed, yours truly dubbed Gramatica the Hamburglar after he donned a ridiculous ski mask for a November 2000 game at Chicago when the temperature was a relatively balmy 37 degrees Fahrenheit.
The move also adds another layer of intrigue to the burgeoning Patriots-Broncos rivalry. Denver punter Todd Sauerbrun is the arch-enemy of the entire Gramatica spawn. Said Sauerbrun in 2002, after the youngest of the three Gramatica brothers taunted Sauerbrun after a game between the Panthers and the Bucs: "I don't know who this kid thinks he's playing with but I'm not the most mild-tempered guy. If he would have said the wrong thing to me there's no telling what I might have done . . . that kid is as big of an idiot as his brother, and I'm sure his other brother is, too. It goes right down the line.''
The Patriots also re-signed on Thursday safety Tebucky Jones. He had been acquired by New England in the first round of the 1998 draft. The Pats traded him to the Saints in 2003, who then traded him to the Dolphins in 2005.

Bengals | B. Williams agrees to terms
Fri, 7 Apr 2006 12:29:20 -0700
Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports the Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to terms with ORG Bobbie Williams on a three-year extension, which keeps him with the team through 2009. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it is believed that the deal is worth about $10.5 million, with about $3.5 million guaranteed in bonuses. Williams expects to sign the deal early next week.
It was funny... I saw a blurb from Sam Adams press conf with the Bengals, and he mentioned wanting to play with Bobbie Williams, among 4-5 other specific names. That confused me greatly.
he wanted to practice against him, as a confidence builder going into that week's game
Bills | Price contract update
Mon, 10 Apr 2006 15:10:35 -0700
Updating previous reports, ESPN.com reports Buffalo Bills WR Peerless Price signed a four year deal with the team worth over $10 million. There are also additional incentives in the contract for Price if he becomes the team's No. 1 receiver.
The Bills took back Peerless Price? Haha. Hilarity will ensue.
When I heard they signed him earlier my initial thought was he was being brought in to compete for a roster spot, but a 4 year deal for over $10 million is a joke. The F/A WR market was paper thin this offseason and he could have been had for the league minimum. Holy desperate move by Buffalo.
Quote49ers | Woods traded for Davis
Wed, 12 Apr 2006 16:21:32 -0700
The San Francisco 49ers have traded WR Rashaun Woods to the San Diego Chargers in exchange for CB Sammy Davis.
PFT.com reported earlier in the day that the Chargers were looking into trading Hanik Milligan, Sammy Davis or
DONNIE EDWARDS.
Now they have traded him obviously to SF and got Woods.
I highlighted Edwards because I would love to see him in Philly. No shot, but a nice dream to have..

Well, the Bucs got Jerald Sowell. (http://www.sptimes.com/2006/04/21/Bucs/Bucs_agree_to_deal_wi.shtml)
Damn, we could have used him.
That sucks. I guess the Eagles already have their FB. Reid is in love with MURP. I don't know how anyone could ever think Parry is better than Sowell.
There's no way to possibly make that argument. I didn't realize Sowell was 32 already...but he's still an extremely competent blocker with good hands. We don't have one of those.
The other thing I like about Sowell is his tendency to get two or three yards more than he should/more than you'd think he could. He's one of my favorite Jets to watch for this reason. This has something to do with the fact that the rest of the team sucks so fargin' badly, of course. But whatever. Too bad he's in the NFC now, makes it a lot harder to root for him.
Well, it's fair to say we've seen more than our fair share of Jets games and Eagles games. And it's fair to say Sowell is 10X better than Parry. And banking on Tapeh is a tremendous gamble. Now I REALLY wish Brian Leonard was coming out early ;).
Get Vickers.

Tom Kowalski, of mLive.com, reports the Detroit Lions could part with either WR Charles Rogers or WR Mike Williams before the regular season.
Mike Williams? What the hell for? He was a rook last year, and played decently for a first year guy. Makes no sense in less they are looking for a trade or something.
Rogers, however, makes all the sense in the world.
Tom E. Curran, of the Providence Journal, reports San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said that the New England Patriots haven't shown interest in San Diego LB Donnie Edwards, who's been on the trading block since before the NFL Draft.
This is one player I would love to have for a year or 2 but having Trotter in the middle hurts that chance. No way you could shift him huh?
Shift who, Trotter? Or Edwards?
Edwards...I need my man Trott in the middle. He stuffs the lane just about as good as anyone.
I suppose you could try shifting Edwards. But I think the Eagles would rather just scoop up Carlos Emmons for much less money, and not have the project of teaching an old dog new tricks.
They'd still have the old dog problem, of course. But it would cost less and work better, imho.
Maybe Greg Richmond can beat out Dhani for this year.

NFL | F. Mitchell claims he's being blackballed
Mon, 15 May 2006 00:02:33 -0700
Mark Eckel, of the Trenton Times, reports free agent WR Freddie Mitchell (Chiefs) is still waiting to get back in the league and believes he is being blackballed, but does not believe Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid is a suspect. Mitchell said, "I don't want to say I'm being blackballed, and I know it's not Andy Reid. But somebody is blackballing me. There has to be something going on we don't know about." Mitchell admits his health was a problem last year and said he is working out with Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens in Atlanta. Mitchell doesn't understand why he can't land a job with one of the 32 NFL teams and added, "I mean, you look at my numbers, and they weren't that great. But you need to look further. Check out the percentage of passes I caught compared to the number thrown to me. I guarantee you I rank with the best in the league."
Maybe its because your mouth is bigger than your ass intolerable for any locker room?

QuoteMIAMI — The Miami Dolphins saw enough potential in Marcus Vick _ both on- and off-the-field _ to believe he deserves a chance as a free agent.

Dolphins sign Marcus Vick to free agent deal
Associated Press
National Football League News Wire
MIAMI -- The Miami Dolphins saw enough potential in Marcus Vick -- both on- and off-the-field -- to believe he deserves a chance as a free agent.
Vick, the brother of Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick, signed with the Dolphins on Monday, agreeing to a free-agent deal after his many problems at Virginia Tech cost him a chance to be selected in the NFL draft.
"As an organization, we did an enormous amount of research, including consulting with professionals in detailed, in-depth analysis to feel comfortable that giving Marcus an opportunity as a free agent is a risk worth taking," Dolphins coach Nick Saban said in a statement released by the team.
"I want to make it very clear that we will not condone any behavior issues in the future relative to Marcus Vick. Marcus acknowledges that he has made some mistakes, all of which has resulted in severe consequences for him. They have helped him learn that he will need to make much better choices and decisions in the future or risk similar consequences that could jeopardize his career as a professional player."
Vick, who participated in a three-day minicamp with the Dolphins earlier this month, completed 177 of 289 passes for 2,393 yards with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, leading Virginia Tech to an 11-2 record and berth in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game in 2005.
But his career with the Hokies included many transgressions. He made an obscene gesture to fans during a game at West Virginia, and stomped on Louisville player Elvis Dumervil's leg during the Gator Bowl.
Vick was suspended by Virginia Tech for the 2004 season because of legal problems, then was eventually dismissed from the team after being stopped for speeding and driving with a revoked or suspended license.
The Dolphins are listing Vick as a "wide receiver-quarterback-specialist," clearly indicating that he could be tried in a number of roles.
During the recent minicamp, Vick spent at least one practice session at wide receiver, and probably isn't being looked at as a serious quarterback candidate -- not with newcomers Daunte Culpepper and Joey Harrington now at that position.
Miami signed three other free agents Monday: tight end Keith Heinrich, linebacker Keith Newman and cornerback Michael Lehan.
Heinrich was on Cleveland's injured reserve list for the entire 2005 season with a knee injury and has played in 18 games since being drafted by Carolina in 2002.
Newman has played with Buffalo, Atlanta and Minnesota in seven seasons, starting 76 of 92 games and recording 407 tackles, 23 sacks, two interceptions, three fumble recoveries and seven forced fumbles.
Lehan, like Vick, attended the rookie minicamp this month on a tryout basis. He spent the last three seasons with the Browns and made 32 appearances, including four starts.
This just goes to show you how one player can pave the way for another..aka Randel El. It should only take one passing TD in the playoffs this year for him and he will be rich next year....so sad

Um, the Jints signed Rob Johnson as a backup QB.
Seriously.
Season's over. Damnit. I can't believe we settled for Garcia when a slightly worse QB was out there. And now he's gone to a division rival. Farg!
I've been reading a lot that Lee Suggs is out of a job with the Browns. They have Droughns, Green, and the rookie, Jerome Harrison, (who I wanted the Eagles to land) from Washington State. I think Suggs would fit in nicely in a rotation with the likes of Westy and Moats. He's probably better than anyone after those two (Perry, Buckhalter, etc). I don't know a ton about him, except that he has had injury problems, but nothing that required surgery to my knowledge. What's the story on him?
Blurb from ESPN's Scouting:
Quote
2006 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 71 | Key
Alert: D
Comment:
He runs with excellent balance and body control - can keep his feet after taking a hit. He shows solid inside run strength - keeps his momentum going forward. He does a solid job of falling forward after contact. He shows functional hands. Not a player you can align all over the field to create miss-matches, but he is effective catching the ball out of the backfield. He is smooth in the open field - does show a little extra burst. He knows how to finish his runs - will lower his pads and take on the defender. Had some fumbling issues in the Miami game, but his overall ball security throughout his career has been very good. The biggest negative with Suggs is that he is not durable. He is not consistent to be able to turn the corner. He needs to improve his blitz pick up and awareness.
the biggest negative with Suggs is that he is not durable
the story on him is just what you read--but I sure as hell would give him a shot just for the fact that he can carry a load of handoffs in a game and produce. He proved that here and there against some good defenses but the problem is the Birds pass too much and go to westbrook too often for Suggs to get enough carries to get going and gain momentum. He would be situational at best here and you know Reid is not giving in to that theory
Lions signed Ross Verba and released Shaun King

Sure... he can't beat a corner to save his life, can't run the right routes and has the work ethic if a hippo... but his ass can catch.
without getting overly-critical Feva, he played the slot, and I think its safe to say that he was beating "someone" when he caught a very high percentage of passes that were thrown his way.
I could care less about the guy, but he has very nice hands thats all I was saying. Alot better hands than other scrubs in the NFL which usually can land you a job
I'm just shteinting you reese. ;)
Besides, it was his hands that could catch.

I dunno, it just seems like he's just never had a decent opportunity. He was stuck with the Texans and their horrible line in a contract year.

Wells seems like a dime a dozen back.
At this point, a dime a dozen back might be acceptable just as a camp body. How many carries can they give Reno in the preseason?
Wells is listed at 6' 1", 252 lbs, I hadn't realized he was that big. He did score four TDs and caught 22 passes last season. There's got to be more to it.

Mike Chappell, of the Indianapolis Star, reports the Indianapolis Colts have signed free agent RB Jonathan Wells (Texans) to an undisclosed contract. He went through a light workout in the afternoon Monday, Aug, 28. "I haven't even met with the coaching staff,'' Wells said. "I don't know what they're going to try to do with me. I have no idea. We'll see how it goes. Hopefully I'll get a fair chance to get out there and try to help the team.''

Agreed. It makes it especially weird that they passed on Reggie Bush.
Yeah, why the hell would they cut easily their best RB? Davis is damn good. Top 15 back for sure.
From what I've read, he hasn't "slept late" or otherwise acted like a dirtbag. But I haven't read much. Is he acting like a fleshpop down there?
According to NFL radio they said he just can't stay healthy and that since Kubiak comes from the Denver school of thought that you can plug just about any RB in a system. They also said that Casserly had nothing to do with the pick of Mario Williams, it was all Kubiak and Co.

QuotePITTSBURGH — The Steelers added size and experience to their backfield today when they signed veteran running back Najeh Davenport to a one-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not released.
Davenport (6-1, 247), a fifth-year veteran from the University of Miami, spent his first four NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers. In 39 games, Davenport has rushed for 1,068 yards and seven touchdowns on 217 carries (4.9 avg.). He also has caught 17 passes for 107 yards (6.3 avg.).
Originally drafted by the Packers in the fourth round (135th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft, Davenport missed most of the 2005 season after breaking his ankle on Oct. 9 against New Orleans. The 27-year-old Davenport, whose first name is pronounced "NAH-jay", set a personal best with 178 rushing yards on Nov. 29, 2004, against the St. Louis Rams.
The Steelers made room on their roster for Davenport by releasing rookie running back Patrick Cobbs, who the team claimed off of waivers from the New England Patriots on Sept. 1.
