Title: Super Bowl Thoughts.
Post by: Zanshin on January 24, 2006, 09:13:34 AM
I keep reading about how the Seahawks and Steelers are evenly matched, but I'm not sure I see that.  The Seahawks looked sharp against the Panthers, but that was the first game when they looked like legit contenders to me.

I know that the Seattle D has been pretty stout against the run this year, but I can't help but thinking that their undersized front seven is going to get blown off the ball in this game.  And as good as the Seahawks line is, I think they'll struggle a bit more against the Pitt 3-4.  So, if the battle is truly won in the trenches, I'd have to call the Steelers the heavy favorites in the game.

But I'm not really hearing that in most media outlets...which makes me wonder how much they believe what they say, versus building up the game for the sake of building it up.

Any other thoughts on it?

Pittsburgh has to be a pretty heavy favorite, I would think.  I think all this "evenly matched" crap is just hype for the game.

My thoughts are that I am going to be too drunk to care by kickoff and too drunk to be upright by the final gun. Other than half-heartedly rooting against the steelers, this game means less than nothing to me.

We have friends that are throwing a Super Bowl party now because they're Stillers fans.

Joy.

the steelers are going to crush the seahawks.  its destiny for the "BUS".  oh i can' wait for the media hype on that  :puke

but really i can't see the seahawks winning.  i don't think its going to be a blowout, but the steelers got that toughness about them.  polamalu is an absolute beast at SS.  im won't be surprised if he wins MVP.  big ben is playing very well, but all the pressure of the super bowl could get to him and he could hsve a major choke day too.  hes still very young.  thats the only way the seahawks win, if big ben has a bad day.  other than that, its pitts game to win.

Oh, I don't care about it in an emotional way at all.  But as a fan of the game of football, I'm always curious how things will play out.  It's a different way to watch the game than when you're emotionally invested in it.

I disagree.  The hawks have the better offensive line, rb, and qb.  Pitts d is better but the hawks d is not too bad either.  I see this game as going either way...who ever gets the TO wins the game.  Can Big Ben put three strong performances together? If he doesnt the hawks will win!

I hope the Steelers win, and I will be semi-rooting for them.  While I have friends that are Steelers fans, my only real reason for this is that I don't want another team taken off the "hasn't won a Super Bowl" list until the Eagles manage to win one.  So... farg Holmgren.  Farg the ex-PSU WR's.  Farg Lofa Tatupu, and farg Rocky Bernard.

Gooooo Stillers.

And I hate the Steelers.

All my friends are Steelers fans but I secretly am going against them in the SB because I'm petty like most of you & don't want to see my friends happy.

Also, I still see Hines Ward in my mind, flapping his arms & grinning like he just smoked a bong. Farger.

I'm one who thinks that they are pretty evenly matched. I think Seattle has a real shot to win this game. At first I was rooting for Pittsburgh because I wanted to see Bettis get a ring. But now I'm gettin a little sick of the Steeler pimping already. So I don't know...

Quarterback: Seattle - As well as Roethlisberger has been playing the edge goes to Hasselbeck here because of experience. But both of them are SB rookies so who knows which one the butterfly's will affect worse.

Runningback: Seattle - Yeah Pittsburgh is a smashmouth team and all, but Alexander is better than Parker & Bettis.

Wide Receiver: Even - Ward, Randle-El & Wilson vs. Jackson, Engram & Jurevicius...Ward is the best of this bunch but this group of SEA WR's isn't like last year. They have been clutch.

Tight End: Even - Jerramy Stevens has really had a good year this year but so has Heath Miller. They're about even in my eyes. Miller will be better overall in the long run but right now I give the edge to Stevens.

O-Line: Seattle - Walter Jones is the best OL in the NFL. Steve Hutchinson is one of the best in the NFL. Sean Locklear, Robbie Tobeck and Chris Gray are all solid. Pittsburgh has one of the best in the nFL as well in Alan Faneca but their OT spots can be taken advantage of.

D-Line: Seattle - Even though Casey Hampton is one of the best NT's in the game the Seattle DL has been money all year long.

LB's: Pittsburgh - As well as Tatupu and Hill have played the Pitsburgh LB's are very, very good.

DB's: Pittsburgh - Seattle has the edge on CBs alone but Troy Polamalu is a flat out stud.

Intangibles: Pittsburgh - They are on a roll. They have been gameplanning very well for Big ben to succeed and Polamalu has been on a roll as well. Cowher and Holmgren are both good coaches but Mike has won the SB before whereas Bill has lost it. But I like the way the Steelers have been playing and momentum is a thing to pay attention to.

This is going to be a close one, IMO. I wouldn't be surprised to see SEA win it either.

You may find this hard to believe, but the Seachickens beating the taterskins doesn't make them a top-flight team.

Pittsburgh just beat the 3 top seeds in the AFC on the road in 3 straight weeks.  They're good, and if things go the right way, they could absolutely stomp the hell out of Seattle.

Better coached?  This is Holmgren's third trip to the big dance as a head coach.  And unlike Bill Cowher, he's actually won one before.

You guys dissing Seattle might be in for a bit of a shock yourselves.

Well, that is if you give a shtein about this game, anyway.

You forgot that coaching is 40% physical appearance, 50% personality & 10% actual success. Cowher looks more like a NFL head coach & gets extra points for always looking angry on the sideline, thereby making him the victor.

Blah blah blah, I'm Phreak and I'm breaking down the teams, blah blah blah.

Agree with pretty much all of your commentary but I'd like to add one thing that you left out and it very well could be the deciding factor in this game.

Special Teams.  Both kickers are solid but neither one of them strikes me as a clutch or big game kicker.  Not like Vinatierri or prior to this year, Akers.  They're about even.

Both teams have solid coverage units.  One thing that Seattle was killing Carolina on was by downing punts inside the 10.  I think they had 3 or 4 in the game downed inside the 10 and 2 inside the 5.  I'll give the slight edge to Seattle on that one.

In the return game (which is where I think the big difference will be made) the Steelers have an edge with Randle El over Warrick.   The guy who gives their team the best starting field position will be the team that wins imo and I'm giving that edge to Pitt.

You can argue that the Steelers beat Cinci because they lost Palmer, but that didn't stop Kitna from taking them into halftime with the lead.  The Bengals were up 17-0 at one point I believe and that was without Palmer.  The Steelers won because they were the better team.

Cinci has the luxury of having a very capable backup, possibly the "best" backup in the game.  Although some may argue that the best backup in the game is starting for the taterskins.  But I digress.......

The point is, the Bengals are one of the few teams in the league who could afford to lose their starter and feel extremely confident with their backup, even in the playoffs.  I don't think it mattered if Palmer played the whole game or not.  The Steelers were going to win that game.

Holmgren gives Reid the credit for "finding" Hasselbeck (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=cr-hasselbeck012406&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)

from about half way down....

Quote"(Philadelphia Eagles coach) Andy Reid, who was on my (Green Bay) staff at the time and coaching quarterbacks, it was his job prior to the draft to go out and look at the quarterbacks," Holmgren said, recalling his initial decision to draft Hasselbeck in 1998. "We had three or four on our list. Of course, Brett Favre was with us, so we weren't prepared to draft a quarterback in the first round or anything like that.

"When talking about Matt, Andy came back and was sold on him and sold me and our staff. We looked at film. And then when I got to meet him and he was around with us, he had the measurables you wanted to have in a quarterback. He threw the ball pretty well. He is quite bright. He was courageous. He moved pretty well for a tall man, a big guy, and then now it's just a matter of seeing how he handles the pressure, the decision making and things like that. He didn't get much play in Green Bay. ... (But) I really liked what I saw, so when it came time to bring in another quarterback here in Seattle, we had four or five guys on our list and Matt came out ahead."

I look at this game and this is what I see--

The Steelers, on the road, have put the stops on Rudi Johnson, Edgerrin James, and Mike Anderson.

The Seahawks beat a weak Washington offense with no 2nd option at WR and once they pretty much halted Portis, that was it; then they beat a Carolina team that was just Delhomme and Steve Smith, and once Delhomme looked like Donovan in the '03 game with 3 picks, it was just Smith. Once they shut him down, that was it.

The Steelers fooled everyone by coming out throwing early. Roethlisberger was on target, and it wasn't just Hines Ward--it was Cedrick Wilson, Heath Miller, and Randle-El making the big plays. So that puts them at an advantage over the first two teams the Hawks played. Then they played keep away with the Bus.

Defensively, I don't think the Seahawks played anyone that blitzes like the Steelers. They didn't fare too well against Washington's D early in the season. If Pittsburgh shuts down Alexander, it'll force Hasslebeck to carry the load, and I don't think he'll be able to do it.

Now, if you're John Marshall and Ray Rhodes, which Pittsburgh team do you prepare for because their secondary is just average--the one that has thrown more than they ran, or the one that runs quite a bit. Pittsburgh could come into this game and start running out of the 3 WR set.

I think the Steelers win this one and I don't even think it will be close. Cowher and Holmgren have been here before, but I believe that the "we're just glad to be here" syndrome will get to the majority of the Seahawks.

What's that drive, 2 maybe 3 days?  You know, for the cost of gas, food and motels during the drive there and back, he and his wife could probably fly, stay in a hotel for a day or 2 and then fly back.  And like rjs pointed out, he could get sloppy drunk while he's at it.  And if he's real lucky, misplace his wife.  ;)

Try and find a hotel or plane flight into Detroit next weekend.

Forget it, Sarge.

BTW: According to Mapquest, the trip from Daytona to Detroit is:

Total Est. Time:  17 hours, 39 minutes
Total Est. Distance: 1145.65 miles

Not bad.  I've made it to A.C. by myself in 15 hours straight through, so if they leave on Friday night, they'll get there Saturday afternoon, hang out, crash in the van, go to the game the next day and drive back.

Quite a few doodes did that last year from Philly to Jax.

Sarge, I'm not sure it would be much farther from Naples, since I'd just go straight up I-75.

Actually, I looked it up:

Total Est. Time:  20 hours, 36 minutes
Total Est. Distance: 1338.61 miles

Is it really 90 min from Naples to Miami?  It looks closer on the map.

once you factor in the old man in the straw hat in a 1992 cadillac you have to trail the whole way, 90 minutes is a generous estimate.

Takes me about an hour to get across "Alligator Alley" and back to civilization.  It's probably closer to two hours (traffic) to get to downtown Miami.

What is it with young QBs, scraggly beards and frat parties?

Kyle Orton and Big Ben need to lose the wannabe Unabomber beards.

they should rotate the super bowls to every nfl stadium...who cares about a little cold weather?  if they can play the conference championship games in winter weather, why can't they do the same w/ the super bowl?
dammit.

Can you imagine the Super Bowl being played in Philly after either the Tampa or Carolina NFCC abortions? I'd have to leave for Europe for 2 weeks.

Im hoping the Seahawks win because there are exactly zero Seahawk fans that I know... so there would be no post game shenanigans.  In fact, there might be zero Seahawk fans outside of Seattle.

There might be zero Seahawk fans inside of Seattle too.

All my friends are Steelers fans but I secretly am going against them in the SB because I'm petty like most of you & don't want to see my friends happy.

Exactly. I have nothing against this Steelers team at all, and I like their players. But I live in Pittsburgh and simply don't want to deal with a Steelers victory wherever I go.
