Title: cell phone bill taxes
Post by: MURP on December 03, 2005, 03:52:23 PM
my usual cell phone plan is like $44 a month.   Somehow it ends up being about $55 every month because of taxes and BS.  What the farg is with all the taxes on a cell phone bill?

Fed Universal SVC Charge
Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee.
State GR Surcharge
Federal Excise Tax
State sales tax
City Sales Tax
Standard 911 access

All that is something like $70 a year of extra taxes and crap.   figure the millions of people with cell phones and there is atleast a billion dollars a year of this shtein.   fargin taxes.

It's the same for every other product too. It's just not explicitly listed on every bill. Governments need their cut of protection money from every transaction in their jurisdiction, same as any other mob.

Yeah, and now West Virginia is gonna try and start taxing all online purchases?!

Doesn't the damn government make enough money on taxes without finding new ways to come up with a tax to make our lives more difficult.

:-D

The entire purpose of the tax code is to come up with new ways of taking money without the rabble getting angry, or preferably even knowing about it.

That's the whole shtick with SunCom.  When they say $39, they mean $39 including all taxes.  I wish more cell companies would bill like that.  Too bad SunCom's service sucks donkey scrotes.

You play games, I check NFL headlines and the weather report.

Anyway...have you ever seen how much tax PA adds to a bottle of liquor?

i love how people are looking for any way to save on the home phone by using these fly by night interent phones...but then willingly and happily spend $50-$60 on a cell phone.

after getting financially raped from the cell phone bill shenanigans (8 lines of taxes, and paying for more minutes than i ever used)...i didnt renew my contract....i've been using a pre-pay cell from verizon for the past 3.5 years now.

it's a little higher per minute ($0.30 during the day, $0.10 nights and weekends)...but by pre paying, you only pay a sales tax...nothing else...so on most months my cell phone bill is about $16. on a month where i may use it more frequently, it's $20/25.

i love it, no contract...and it's cheap, it gets calls, and makes calls, and i can use the internet on it...

the prepay makes no sense for someone who uses cells extensively or exclusively, but for me...it's perfect.

i just called cingular to downgrade my account since i don't use all the minutes now especially since i get no signal in my new place.  no they do not offer anything less than the 39.99 plan.  i have no options, they cannot offer me anything less.  i tell u what corporate america is in full effect.  they've got us bent over and taking it.  i can't stand it.  im paying for 450 minutes a month when i only use at most half.  farged in the ASS!

Get a pay-as-you-go plan.  Then you only pay for the minutes you use.

BTW, most of the cell phone taxes are not actually taxes - they are "the government made us do X, so we are going to make you pay" charges.  Things like 911, number portability, etc....they just add a fee instead of raising rates.

verizon has a different price for day time, and then nights and weekends. 200 minutes as a pay as you go would probably be less than $30/month.
