When is this guy going to learn to protect the farging football?
He fumbles way too goddamn much. He slings the ball way outside his body and leaves it wide open for people to hit it out.
If that moron doesn't fumble the Eagles go up 27-13.
Protect the football, pal.
He's fine as long as he catches it in the endzone, not inside the 10... ;D
Yeah, I'm not shocked that he fumbled that one. It's a problem...
They should do LJ like they did Omar Epps in "The Program".
Make him hold the ball all fargin' week... and have his teammates try to knock it out. Anybody other than LJ brings the ball back to AR... bench his ass.
I had Super Bowl flashbacks on that one. >:(
He always does it fighting for yards, so you can't knock him too bad. He's just high motor. He has to learn the difference between fighting for yards, and playing safe and laying down. It'll come. LJ is going to be a beast this year. :yay
If not for his fumbles, he'd be better than any tight end out there. All he needs to do is hold onto the friggen' ball.

I can respect his effort all day long... but dammit... he's gotta be smarter about that ish. There was a play earlier where he was fighting and holding the ball out there waiting to be knocked out. He's gotta keep that ish close to the body.
Fighting for yards is all well and good but a fumble is a fumble. Effort's great, but if he keeps turning the ball over I'd rather he quit fighting for yards and turn fetal on the ground.
Especially when you are inside the 10 yard line. That is the absolute time to protect the ball. I always cringe when LJ does that.
TO can get away with it because he has open field, you can't hold the ball so far away from your body when you are working the middle.
That really pissed me off too. Thats a bad habit for a TE to have. Hopefully it is corrected quick.
Just a thought:
During the PSU/Northwestern game yesterday they showed a ball wrapped in silk that they make their RBs carry during practice.
I really think it's part of LJ trying to show the coaching staff he can be the guy. He'll learn he own the position, and he'll settle down. He plays great, but at times seems skittish still, as if he is trying to impress by going outside his lane. He'll cool out, and Reid and Co. will get him sorted out.

And...?
Were they not supposed to wrinkle the silk or something? Or was it for them to work on holding a slippery football?
I think LJ can keep is tenacity but protect the ball at the same time. It's not a zero sum game. Just hold the ball near your chest when you are in traffic. Thats all.
yea every catch it seems like the balls just put out there for the defeneders. i agree phreak. lj needs to protect the ball more.
I agree, he fumbles way too much. It's nice going for the extra yard, but every time he doesd that it gets knocked loose. Someone needs to tell him to take what he can get and get DOWN.

And the Minny playoff game...and other times he's coughed it up.
Jeez, Little John...protect the ball inside the 10.
Seriously...Big Red better jump in his ass with both feet.
I disagree to an extent on his fumble the guy put his helmet right on the ball, he had it fairly well protected. There was no excuse for his drop with about 5 minutes left. Other than that play I was impressed with him again.

If you can hold onto the ball in practice when it's slippery imagine how much easier it is with leather. The silk makes the ballhandler aware they have to protect the ball. LJ is more concerned with getting an extra 6 inches than he is with covering the ball.
He may have to start carrying the rock with both hands.

Gotcha. You just kind of left the statement hanging so I was wondering what the rest of it was.
LJ just needs to be slapped a few times.

Little John carries the ball like I carry my f'ing beer.
Except I don't fumble.
:-D
Who taught him how to carry a ball?

He came from Rutgers in NJ I so I assume it was our old governor Jim Man-Gravey :P
Every single time he gets the ball he does these weird ass looking spin moves. He always does them though as he's getting tackled so he's parallel to the ground and the ball sticks out.
I knew that was coming. I closed my eyes when he caught the ball and didn't even need to open them to know what happened. There was about 75 Eagles fans watching the game at the pub yesterday and every one of them let out a groan when he booted the ball away.
Still... the defense should have helped him out and shut down the Raiders after that happened. Allowing a 98 yard drive after that was ridiculous.
I'm still disgusted by that fiasco yesterday but a win's a win so I'll take it.
As LJ's sponsor, Team Smith would like to let you all know that our focus for this week is figuring out a way to increase the size and strength of LJ's baby-carny hands.
Also, LJ would like you all to lick his taint. That's all.

Zero points scored on that drive. The defence did do thier job.
Ok, ok, it was partly thanks to the fact that the raiders kicker is only half as good as the Eagles one legged kicker.
I was thinking Walter Payton. :o
LJ was almost crying on sideline after fumble that was pretty Hoyda. DA had a reason to almost cry, but even that was a little Hoyda.
The fumble was very similar to the Minny playoff game with Freddie catching it.He also dropped a 3rd and 2 pass and the one McNabb touched passed in hit him in the hands.Diernob said it was a bad pass - wtf.
I know one of my coaches introduced the following (and it was damn effective):
For every fumble during practice the whole team (or group doing the exercize) does 10-20 push-ups. And probably they should introduce as well that, with the sole exception fo the ball being knocked out of the QB's hands when attempting to pass from his blindside, for every fumble during the games they should make them pay $500.
I know of a soccer coach who instituted that for penalties practice. At the end of every practice, every player had to take one penalty. If they missed or the keeper blocked the kick, they had to pay $ 50. Within a month they were shooting 95% +.
As far as LJ: if he can get it implanted in his head that the first thing to do is protect the ball (with two hands) he should be fine.
the players union would allow none of that

Yep - SD is right. The silk (slippery) football would clear up that shtein real quick.
C
The guy played at Rutgers.
It's not as if anyone ever gave him actual football-related coaching there.
Give him a couple more years. He'll catch on.
:-*
Yeah, but will he hold on?

Nobody better lay a finger on my butterfinger.
I could go for one right now, what a great candy bar.
As for LJ, he doesn't need to hold the ball with 2 hands all the time. It's hard to run at full speed when your hands are both holding a ball. Just tuck it away like RBs do, and he should be fine. Then hold it with 2 hands if he wants when he is about to make contact with a defender.

Hmmm... yeah... eeeh... that was what I intended to say... I know from experience how hard it is to run with two hands on the ball....
