QuoteEagles Fans mad that Owens fails to show at autograph session
By Shannon Ryan
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - They love him. They hate him. They cheer him. They chastise him.
Terrell Owens, the Eagles' controversial wide receiver, transformed a few more of his faithful into haters today when he skipped out on signing autographs with the rest of the receivers at training camp at Lehigh University.
Many fans wearing No. 81 jerseys left the autograph tent grumbling like players unhappy with their contracts. Instead of snagging Owens' autograph, they had settled for paper helmets with the signatures of Greg Lewis, Billy McMullen, Justin Jenkins and others on them.
"I'm ticked," said Latoya Hopkins, 18, who had driven from Delaware in her T.O. jersey in hopes of having it signed. "I'm so mad. He shouldn't get a new contract now."
The Eagles said Owens was receiving treatment for an inflamed groin that had kept him out of practice for two days.
Owens did practice today, and fans who had gotten tickets to pass through the autograph tent thought it going to be their lucky day. Then, after the morning workout ended, they saw Owens take off his shoulder pads and run for the fieldhouse.
Fans attending the afternoon session did not seem to hold anything against Owens. They cheered for him when he caught a long touchdown pass from quarterback Donovan McNabb. They yelled his name so that he would turn toward them and smile for pictures.
A year ago at this time, Owens was adored by the fans who flocked to Lehigh, and he played up to them at every opportunity. Thus began a love affair that lasted until shortly after the Super Bowl.
Owens' support started to erode when he demanded that the Eagles rework his contract, then seemed to target insults at McNabb without naming him.
Although they directed a few boos at him on the first day of this year's camp last week, fans seemed to have mostly forgiven him. They had been singing the "T.O." cheer, wearing replicas of his jersey, and applauding his every reception.
Now they are again singing a different tune. Or at least those who had hoped to get his autograph yesterday are.
When Tim Miller woke up, he had thought that his once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet Owens was slim. After he drove 20 minutes from Upper Macungie, Pa., to Bethlehem, he saw Owens practicing and thought that maybe it would be his day after all. Then he got a ticket to move along the row of receivers where Owens was supposed to sitting.
"We were sky-high," Miller said.
But when the turn arrived for Miller and his 9-year-old son, Zachery, to get signatures, all that was in Owens' place was a No. 81 jersey.
"It was a diamond-in-the-rough [chance] to meet him, and he stepped on it," Miller said.
When asked if the excuse that Owens was getting medical treatment was good enough, Serge Oros said no.
"He was practicing," said Oros, from Newtown, Bucks County, who had brought sons Shane, 6, and Craig, 4, with him. "He would still be able to come for a limited time. It's wrong. It's disappointing."
Some fans said they had stuck by Owens while others were turning on him. Now Michael Klassen might be down on him, too.
"He's letting the fans down," said Klassen, who had brought his 5-year-old son, Aidan, with him from Hummelstown, Pa. "With all the trouble he's caused, you'd think he'd be here."

Just a stupid, stupid article. The Inquirer should be ashamed.
Yeah, that's really more of a Daily News kind of article.

Shouldn't be long till this stories on ESPN's front page.
How many times does TO turn down the chance to be in front of the fans being the star of the show? Never!
He needs to be in the trainers room fixing up his injury? Fine by me...its the right thing to do. FOR THE TEAM.
Selfish TO = signing autographs and ignoring injury
Team player TO = treating his injured groin so he can resume practice with the TEAM tomorrow
I wish the fans and media would make up their minds as to what they want.

there no reason dook couldnt have stopped by for an hour of autographs
Who in the world wants Simon's autograph?
Yeah well. Who cares.
The only people I feel sorry for are the kids, particularly because their fathers/mothers have probably been hyping up TO all week and all morning and then they were let down. All the 30 year olds who are mad because they didn't get his autograph can go farg themselves.

First of all, no one signs autographs for an hour. Maybe like Mark Marsical, because he would NEVER expect that many people to be there. And do you understand how boring it is signing autographs? you write your name down in an hour, like 200 times. im not defending TO because i hate him for his actions but hes a good player. thats it.

But he does care about being the star of the show. And again, if his groin needed post-practice treatment so he can be 100% for the start of the season, he can do whatever the farg he wants. I don't care about his autograph either. I care about him catching 15 TDs. So, it works both ways.
1 hour wouldn't have killed him or negatively impacted his "treatment". everybody can roll out the excuses...........but it was still a fleshpop move...i agree that this isn't a big story...just TO being a fleshpop.

Actually, the treatment needs to be given right after practice. Directly after coming off the field. Youve played sports of some sort before, right? You don't wait an hour afterwards before starting treatment. So, you're wrong.
But TO's a fleshpop, so he's right too. Oh the confusion!

Sure, I have said quite a few times that he's being a fleshpop about the contract and whatnot. But again, receiving treatment for an injury is far more important than signing autographs.

this is a dumb story
i wonder how many people that were crying about not getting TO's autograph were the same people yelling to cut him a month ago.
retards
It's a non-story, IMO. I think I've almost been converted over to the "I don't care as long as he catches 80 passes for 15 TDs" camp with TO, based on the silliness of the media coverage since camp opened.
It almost seems that the media is getting a little bit of revenge with this story, like "see fans, he doesn't want to talk with you, either...it's not just the media." I'm growing weary of the daily soap opera the media is desperately trying to maintain.
Out of curiosity, do you all really think that TO will catch 15 TDs this year? I definitely do not.
no, but it doesn't mean i wouldn't like him to.

out of curiosity...why not?
Most of the "snubbed" fans were money-grubbing adults, looking to make a buck with some signed memorabilia. Frankly, I don't give a shtein if players don't show up for the autograph sessions.
Quote from: PhillyGirl on August 08, 2005, 09:47:17 AM

In 9 full seasons, he's averaged 1100 yards and 11 TDs. He's had over 10 TDs 5 times. Those are the kind of numbers I expect from him this year, coming off of an injury, in an offense that spreads the ball around. And I would be thrilled with those numbers. He's capable of monster years like last year, but to expect that as the norm is a little overly optimistic.
Plus, I think TO's gonna see a lot more double teams this season. I hope he can stomach the role of decoy. >:D

right, cause all of the best players in the NFL just act as decoys.
Larry's point is still valid though. He will receive extra attention after his huge year last season, opening others up for more opportunities. AR would be an idiot not to try to take advantage of that. I think its only natural that TO's number will go down this year. It's not like he won't still be a star or one of the best in the league, I would just be surprised if he surpassed his TD total from last year.
If he stays healthy and the Eagles don't have NFC HFA wrapped up by Thanksgiving again, I don't see why not. To look at his stats another way, he's had at least 13 TDs in five of his nine NFL seasons, so I think it's possible if he starts 16 games.
You make a good point about spreading the ball around, though. If Buck stays healthy, if Greg Lewis is able to convert a higher percentage of Pinky's catchs into TDs this season, etc., then it could reduce the Eagles' reliance on TO to score. Some of it will also depend on the production the Eagles get out of the TEs without Chad Lewis this season.
RE: Larry's point, it has some validity...but, wasn't he receiving double-coverages and defenses designed to neutralize him in the passing game last year? It's not like he snuck up on anyone last year, Defensive Coordinators were well aware of who Terrell Owens was before he became an Eagle. I can't believe that the loss of Pinky will do much to change the coverages TO receives in 2005.

Of course. And I don't think he actually meant that TO will used as a decoy. But the natural thing to do as a coach is to take advantage of teams' focus on TO to open things up for the other guys. It'd be great if he can average a TD a game again this year, but I wouldn't count on it.
I dont count on it either. I dont expect him to break 14TD's, but im not sure why anyone thinks TO will be double teamed more this season than in seasons past.

I can see it. AR's MO has always been to spread the ball around. Everyone knew that. I'd be willing to bet that TO catching 70+ passes in 14 games surprised the hell out of a lot of opposing coaches. I think it makes sense that he may have seen less double teams early in the year last season, and I think it makes sense that he would see more this season. Whatever. This is all speculation, obviously.
With a groin or hammy injury (and I am not an expert at all), I imagine that the best way to prevent swelling is to attend to it immediatly following physical activity, not after its had a chance to tighten while sitting around signing autographs.
The autograph seekers have gotten out of control, some are lunatics. It would have been nice if he was 100%, but no matter how many he signed, someone would have griped. That autograph thing was nice, its now gotten out of control. Wouldn't you rather have a chance run in with a player (current or former), or watch a practice and evaluate it, enjoy your kids, friends, or meet other fans, suck up a water ice, and enjoy the scenery of the mountains, than get there at 5 am, stand in a push and shove line, to have and athelete scribble on a jersey, photo, or napkin? At that point you missed out on the whole experience of going up there. You can come away with a heck of alot more than an autograph.
I've gotten a penant signed, and my kids have chased autographs under the old vet, and you do end up feeling great or angry about the way the players treat you. Coming or leaving a game or practice, its nice if they sign a few for the kids, but when theres 100's or 1000's of fans, its useless to start signing. The guy is unhappy, and a little dinged. It'd be a bonus if he were Mr Congeniality, but as long as he scores TDs and doesn't dirupt the team any further, then I could give a rats ass if he signs auto's. In fact I'm happy he's attending to his health after practice.

Interesting point, but in all honesty I was expecting around 65-75 catches (for the full 16 games) and a lot more yardage than Pinkston ever mustered. I definitely didn't think that he would have his number called as often as he did. Anyway, that point is moot now, I would think that the other receivers will have more opportunities this year and that his numbers will dip accordingly.

The numbers do support this. Owens caught the majority of his TDs in the beginning of the season. He wasn't as effective in the latter part (before his injury).
The one team that had good success containing him was the taterskins, and all they essentially did was double cover him every play. As a result, our offense was a little out of sync...and since the NFL's a copy cat league, I expect other teams to mimic what Greg Williams was doing on defense.
anyway that article was useless. who fargin cares, farg the damn kids an farg the selfish parents. boo fargin hoo :puke
TO missed practice this morning because he tweaked his groin injury yesterday at practice.
It's always been a spread-it-around offense because there was never a legitimate stud. Last year there were two for McNabb to throw to. Anybody that didn't expect more catches than James Thrash ever had is a dumbass.
There was a rumbling about this yesterday on PTI when Bob Ryan brought it up. He was saying something to the effect that Owens' injury "might not" be all it seemed.
We may be seeing a plethora of stories equating Owens' groin injury with holding out.
Rediculous? It IS ESPN. It's getting as bad as any "Hollywood" rag.

A league source tells us that the Philadelphia Eagles privately believe that receiver Terrell Owens is deliberately avoiding practice with a groin injury, as an expression of lingering disappointment with his contract.
But the Eagles, the source tells us, are saying publicly that the injury is legitimate because they don't want the general public to believe that T.O. is "playing them like fools."
On Tuesday, Owens missed his fourth practice in five days.
It's the latest chapter in a soap opera that could, as we see it, result in a split between player and team before the September 11 season opener. We suggested when Owens made known his intent to report for training camp after weeks of threatening to hold out that the Eagles could choose in the end to cut him on the eve of the date on which his $3.25 million salary for 2005 becomes fully guaranteed, given his status as a vested veteran.
The Eagles are required to pay T.O. $10.75 million between September 1, 2005 and April 1, 2006, and Owens would be hard pressed to get that kind of jack on the open market -- especially if he were to be thrust onto the free-agency shelf by the team after any other franchise who might be interested in him has rounded out its roster, and spent most of its 2005 cap money.
The fact that the Eagles privately are wondering whether any other team would pay T.O. in March 2006 the $7.5 million in bonus money he's due to earn in Philly causes us to assume that they're also looking at the question from the perspective of his 2005 salary. Frankly, we think he'd be very hard pressed to get $3.25 million this year, if he's cut on September 9. And since he'd be landing with another team hours before the start of the regular season, he probably wouldn't be able to generate the kind of production that would make him a high-dollar free agent next year.
Of course, the Eagles can't quite afford to lose Owens, given that Todd Pinkston is gone for the year with a ruptured Achilles' tendon. But since we'd heard in no uncertain terms that the Eagles intend to make an example of Owens if he allows his displeasure with his contract to become an issue in camp, the team might have to start looking at possible trade targets and/or free agents who can come in and catch passes.
Sounds like a Mike Florio gem. ::)
I mean seriously. Does anyone really think that they are going to cut him before the season? This is ridiculous.
I don't understand how an alleged faking of an injury would benefit TO. If he stays on the Eagles roster and misses a lot of time this season due to embellishing his known chronic hamstring issues, how does that get him a better contract with another team next year? And if they did cut him before the opener, does anyone believe that teams will be lining up to pay him more than $3.25 mil for 2005 after his off-season histrionics coupled with an injury that causes him to miss all of August (at his age)?
And, didn't TO practice again and aggravate the injury after missing a practice or two after they first reported the injury? What is the big deal about him resting it during training camp, to get him ready for the season. I really don't care if TO practices again until the last week of August--maybe even not then--as long as he's ready for Sept. 12th.
This IS ridiculous.

Yes, and funny enough, the fact that he had to leave the field and get immediate treatment, missing the autograph session, was blamed on him skipping out for contract reasons as well.
This whole thing disgusts me. I almost WISH he'd break his silence to turn around to the media and tell them all the farg off.

I almost WISH he'd break his silence...
Whoa whoa whoa, lets not go crazy here. As much as I think the media's TO boner is ridiculous, I like TO a lot more when he isn't saying anything to anyone. Makes him seem momentarily intelligent.
Yeah, I'd also prefer that he maintain his silence...it frustrates the press to no end, and makes it much less likely that he's going to say something stupid or inflammatory.
As long as his teammates don't think he's milking the injury, let the press continue to speculate.
I almost.....
Maybe if TO didnt have groin problems for YEARS I would believe he was faking it.
I for one believe he's faking it. Either that, or mister goody two shoes andy reid has forced him to stop sacrificing virgins and it is sapping his groin strength.

Yup, not exactly something that just popped up out of the blue.

Sacrificing virgins for groin strength. That's the best idea ever.

The splooshing sound you just heard was a million sports writers ejaculating across the country.
