I found this list on The RedZone. I'm sure it isn't 100% accurate (I found a few mistakes so far) though. It is broken down by position and by UFA and RFA. I didn't include the ERFA because their original team has exclusive rights to them. They can't be signed unless the team fails to give them a qualifying offer and then they're free agents. And for some reason there are no Centers listed? ESPN's isn't up yet so we'll have to go with this until a better list is available.
Hey, we could get Thrash AND Brock back??!! I bet they'd come cheap! :paranoid
Hmmm.... LaMont Jordan, eh?
Smooty! :D :-D :deion
Thrash! :D :-D :boom :'(
Travis taylor! :boom :-D :'(
Looking at that list of DTs, I hope the Eagles get a deal for Simon done before FA starts or slap the tag on him....he seems like the most talented DT out there. I'd slap the tag on him.....that way if someone wants him we'd get some pretty nice compensation. What is the compensation for a franchsie tagged player?
Ed could tell you for sure, but I think it's a teams first round pick.
where is Jerry Porter?
He's not on the list since he technically has 1 yr left on his contract...but it's voidable due to a clause in his contract about playing time. As long as his agent doesn't farg up and files the paper work, he'll be free.

Come on, that never happens.
Mikey,
If a franchised player is signed, the team signing him must give up 2 first round picks. Teams could work out trades though, like Washington did with Champ Bailey last year.
I'm adding Jerry Porter now. He has filed his paperwork according to the Contra-Costa Times.
ESPN's list is up (http://proxy.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?null)
ESPN's top 10 FA's are:
1. Orlando Pace
2. Walter Jones
3. Julian Peterson
4. Shaun Alexander
5. Corey Simon
6. Jeremiah Trotter
7. Edgerrin James
8. Plaxico Burress
9. Charles Woodson
10. Kendrell Bell
Simon and Trotter beat out Edge! wow.
I've updated the first post, the offensive positions, from ESPN's list. It is more accurate. I'll do the defensive list tonight when I wake up.

They have to tag him every year to keep him. His agents want him to get Peyton Manning-type money.

It says in the article I posted (had to modify it) that he's currently looking for a new agent.
The Rams should just keep tagging him until he shows any decline in his play and then let him go get a pittance in comparison from another team. He should get a new agent, though. Leave to an idiot OSU grad to just figure that out now.

The St. Louis Rams informed left tackle Orlando Pace that he will be given the franchise designation for the third consecutive season.
Pace, who fired his agent, Carl Poston, during the season, is still in the process of finding a new agent. He had been talking to Tom Condon of IMG and Rocky Arceneaux, but he has not announced who will negotiate his contract.
By giving Pace the franchise tag, the Rams must increase the price of last year's designation by 120 percent to $8,425,100 in the form of a one-year tender. Both sides have until March 15 to reach a long-term deal and still allow the Rams the chance to regain the franchise tag for next season.

Good job Pace. :yay I wish the Postons would just get banned by the NFL.
I actually think waltr Jones is a better tackle than Pace. Not taking anythng away from pace, he is still a top tier tackle, but I just thiunk Jones is a betterone.
sounds like Drew Brees has been franchised

He'll get it next week. A player isn't officially franchised until papers are filed with the NFL. Only Pace and Simon have been officially franchised yet, I believe.
Any one think after Ried worked out Lamont Jordan and saw him run that 4.3 fourty that he'll have interest?
God, I know it probably ain't happening, but I would simply loooooove to have him in Eagles green.
Still on the same level as Phreak on this one. He's going to cost way too much and Davenport won't....and Davenport is what the Eagles need more than anything.

I just saw that on the Botom Line, Crennel isn't taking long to make changes he also added Carthon as his O-Coordinator today. I wonder if they will make a push for someone like Brees or draft a Qb?
Saints plan to tag Howard (http://www.nola.com/saints/t-p/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/110845067184770.xml)
The franchising of Abraham and Howard, in a weak DE group, drives up Burgess' value. Slim pickin's out there now...

lol...and?
He doesn't. But they don't have a choice because there's no way they let him walk with unproven Chris Perry there.
I hope Indy and Seattle put the tags on Edge & Alexander just so I can stop hearing reading about them. It's only been a week and I'm ready to explode in anger.
We need a running back, lets go spend all our cap money on fumbleman II Alexander and screw other more pressing needs. What, you don't see the logic?

he does have the best subtle bermanism out there...Najah *eeeeehhhhhhh* Davenport
I wouldn't mind Davenport, but I think Green Bay's offensive line is excellent for run blocking and I think he thrives over there because of that. I wouldn't expect the same production here, but then again we don't run that much here anyway.
I'm for Davenport.

QuoteSeahawks | Jones Agrees to Lucrative Long-Term Deal - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 16 Feb 2005 07:54:14 -0800
Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the Seattle Seahawks agreed to terms with OT Walter Jones on a seven-year deal that includes a signing bonus exceeding $15 million and includes additional roster bonuses over the first three years. Jones' new deal averages more than $7 million annually, putting the veteran tackle on par with the highest paid linemen in the league. Jones is expected to officially sign his new contract Wednesday, Feb. 16.

That's definitely the real news here from our point of view. You think Hasselbeck and not Alexander?
I would think they'd tag Alexander, too. He's the super star, not Hasselbeck. Besides, with Jones coming back long term, it makes keeping Hasselbeck easier. Of course, same could be said for the effect Jones' signing would have on Alexander's decision, so maybe that's not such a hot idea afterall..

I'd say that Hasselbeck gets the tag as well. Mike Holmgren has invested a lot in him in terms of offensive scheme and such. It would be much easier, I'd think, to bring in another RB versus another QB.
With a heavy draft and FA class at the RB position, I'd tag the QB and go looking for another RB. They still have Maurice Morris and he'd team well with a guy like LaMont Jordan or a rookie like Cadillac Williams.
As for Walter Jones...he's the 2nd best LT in the game. He's amazing. Keeping him off the market was huge. With Orlando Pace being tagged the quality of LT's available dropped big time.
The Giants needed a LT so they could move Petitgout back to RT and there's slim pickins out there now. They have no #1 pick either...

Collins restructures to help out Raiders
QuoteQB gives Raiders cap relief
By Steve Corkran, CONTRA COSTA TIMES
Quarterback Kerry Collins proved the consummate team player in 2004 by saying and doing all the things on and off the field that the Raiders asked of him. On Wednesday, he put his money where his mouth is.
Collins restructured his contract in such a way that lowered his base salary from $4.7 million in 2005 to $1.2 million and helped the Raiders get under the salary cap limit, according to a person familiar with the negotiation.
The Raiders now are approximately $2 million under the projected salary cap figure of $85 million. The cap was $80,582,000 in 2004. All teams must be under the limit March 1 and remain there the rest of the season. Free agency starts March 2.
Still, the Raiders have plenty of work to do before the cap takes effect. They would have to clear upwards of $6 million more of cap space should they elect to designate cornerback Charles Woodson or wide receiver Jerry Porter their franchise player by Tuesday's deadline. Both will be unrestricted free agents if they aren't re-signed by March 2.
The franchise tag is a one-year tender from a team to a player on the verge of free agency. The tender guarantees the player the average of the top five salaries at his position from the previous season. In exchange, the team gets the right to match an offer from any other team or two first-round draft picks if another team signs that player.
The franchise tender for Woodson stands at $8,816,000, and $7,768,000 for Porter. The Raiders used the exclusive franchise tag on Woodson last season and wound up paying him $8,781,000.
Raiders senior personnel executive Mike Lombardi said it is team policy not to discuss contract negotiations.
However, it is no secret that the Raiders aren't inclined to pay quarterback Rich Gannon the $8 million he is scheduled to earn in 2005. He restructured his contract from $7 million to $4.5 million before last season.
Now, Gannon is recovering from a broken vertebra in his neck sustained Sept. 26 and unsure whether he wants to attempt a comeback. The Raiders could save as much as $7 million or so by getting Gannon to accept a restructured contract that would pay him the veteran minimum. They would save less by releasing Gannon before June 1 because the unaccounted portion of Gannon's signing bonus would be accelerated and count toward the 2005 cap.
Raiders coach Norv Turner has said he won't comment on Gannon's future until Gannon's doctors provide enough information on his long-term outlook. That makes Collins the No. 1 quarterback until further notice.
Collins earned $660,000 last season. He is scheduled to make $6 million in 2006.
The Raiders also have several prime candidates for restructuring or release: left offensive tackle Barry Sims ($3.1 million in 2005), backup defensive tackle John Parrella ($3 million), right guard Ron Stone ($2.2 million), left guard Frank Middleton ($2 million), backup running back Zack Crockett ($2 million), defensive tackle Ted Washington ($2 million) and defensive end Warren Sapp ($2 million).

Light bulb head was on ESPN last night and thinks that Seattle is trying to resign Hasselbeck before March 2 so they can tag Alexander and keep all 3. He thinks that if Alexander leaves Seattle, it'll be for Miami....
If I was Saban, I would want Henry, not Alexander. They both fumble, but Henry was above average with a sub par O-Line.
My biggest question with that: why would Buffalo want to help Miami like that?
They seem to lik eMcGahee more, but I don't know hwy. They bhnoth fumble a lot, but Henry has more run power. Not a wise move by buffalo, but hey, we'll tak ehim. Not a bad bakup.
McGahee was a top-3 pick before the injury. Now that he's recovered, he appears to be back to that form.....
Abraham was just finally officially tagged.

Buccaneers sign QB Smith
February 18, 2005
TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) - Quarterback Akili Smith is getting another chance.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday signed Smith, who has not played in the NFL since the 2002 season, and assigned him to the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe.
Terms were not disclosed.
Smith, the third overall pick in the 1999 draft, never lived up to his billing with the Cincinnati Bengals and was released in June 2003. He signed with the Green Bay Packers later that month but did not make the active roster.
In Cincinnati, the 29-year-old Smith started 17 of 22 games and completed less than 47 percent of his passes (215-of-461) for 2,212 yards and just five touchdowns with 13 interceptions.
Are they goin sign Tim Couch, Eric Crouch and Lawrence Phillips too?
Get Cade McNown! :D
FWIW...from espn insider rumor section:
QuoteFeb. 18 - With the Jets having used their franchise tag on DE John Abraham, Jordan is expected to hit free agency with a number of suitors lined up. According to the N.Y. Times, the Raiders already have approached the Jets about trading for Jordan but now can wait and attempt to sign him after March 2.
The Buccaneers also have been mentioned as a possible destination for Jordan. Tampa recently hired former Jets offensive coordinator Paul Hackett, who is more than familiar with Jordan's abilities, both as a runner and a pass-catcher out of the backfield.
The Jets still will attempt to re-sign Jordan, but he reportedly wants a significant raise and more carries. "If I do decide to come back here," Jordan told the N.Y. Daily News, "it's because they presented me with an offer that I feel comfortable with, and because I seriously feel like I have a legitimate chance of starting."

Making sense of teams' dollars
A look at all 32 teams' salary cap status, based on a projected 2005 cap of $85 million:
Arizona: Has money to be a major free-agent player.
Atlanta: Waiting to decide how to prorate Michael Vick's bonus.
Baltimore: In its best cap shape since 1996.
Buffalo: Positioned well to re-sign key players, pursue other veterans.
Carolina: Releasing Muhsin Muhammad would free $10.2 million.
Chicago: Has ample cap room and could create more if needed.
Cincinnati: Already budgeted all but $2 million of its cap space.
Cleveland: Dumping Jeff Garcia will put the Browns $9.5 million under the cap.
Dallas: Plenty of ammo ($20 million) for the free-agent market.
Denver: Scrambling to find the money to actively pursue free agents.
Detroit: $23 million in cap space, but lots of players to re-sign.
Green Bay: Little room to maneuver on the market.
Houston: Has about $5 million in space but won't be active in the market.
Indianapolis: $20 million cap cushion will disappear quickly.
Jacksonville: Plans to put its sizeable cap surplus to good use.
Kansas City: Should rectify its cap deficit relatively painlessly.
Miami: Cuts will put it under the cap but won't leave spending money.
Minnesota: Has as much cap space as any team in the league.
New England: After bloated contracts are trimmed, Pats will have room to maneuver.
New Orleans: Expected to be $4 million under but could easily free more cash.
N.Y. Giants: Should have more cap flexibility than in recent years.
N.Y. Jets: Anticipated $9 million in cap space when the free-agent period begins.
Oakland: In fine shape; will have more space if Rich Gannon's deal is adjusted.
Philadelphia: Will have about $8 million available for free agents.
Pittsburgh: Continues to sit right up against the cap.
St. Louis: Will have room to make a couple of moderate to large free-agent strikes.
San Diego: After tagging Drew Brees, will have $13 million to spend.
San Francisco: Poised to be a stronger market force with $20 million available.
Seattle: With plenty of players to re-sign, its available $22 million will go fast.
Tampa Bay: Needs to restructure contracts, make cuts to combat $14 million cap hole.
Tennessee: With a $27 million cap deficit, cuts are imminent.
Washington : Could make a few waves with $4 million in cap room.
Looking at that cap list, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota, and Jacksonville could all make some big waves, and move into the W column more frequently than during last season.
I would love to see Dallas make a couple big splashes, and still suck. Would anything be better?
QuoteColts expected to use franchise tag on James
By John Clayton
ESPN.com
The Colts locked up their right tackle for the next seven years by signing Ryan Diem to a seven-year deal worth a little more than $36 million. Included in the deal are signing and option bonuses in excess of $10 million a year.
"This is the best of all worlds," Diem's agent Cliff Brady told The Associated Press. "He got the team he wanted, the deal he wanted and it worked out real well."
The contract will pay Diem $19 million over the first three years of the contract and fill out the base of a solid offensive line.
"All things being equal, he wanted to stay," Brady told the AP. "So it's great he could get a deal done at the place he wanted to play."
With Diem under contract, the Colts are solid at both right and left tackle because left tackle Tarik Glenn is signed through 2007. Jeff Saturday is locked in through 2008 and is on the verge of becoming one of the best centers in the game.
"I think (Diem's signing is) huge because you have your left tackle, center and right tackle set," Brady told the AP. "You have receivers set, and the only thing that's missing is the guards."

Hasselbeck agrees to contract, Alexander to be tagged.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sports/2002186461_hawk22.html
QuoteThe Seahawks reached an agreement last night with quarterback Matt Hasselbeck on a long-term deal, according to sources close to contract negotiations.
Details of the deal were not immediately known, and Hasselbeck has to sign the contract to make it official. Assuming he does so by 1 p.m. today, the Seahawks will turn their attention to running back Shaun Alexander and designate him as their franchise player.
The team was to hold a news conference today to announce Hasselbeck's signing.
The Seahawks had until 1 p.m. today to name their franchise player. If Hasselbeck had not signed, the team had informed the quarterback that it would have named him the franchise player. Alexander presumably would have become a free agent on March 2.
The team is not required to use its tag and can designate only one player.
Hasselbeck, 29, was believed to be asking for a deal similar to the one New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington got just before the 2004 season. Pennington signed a seven-year extension for $64 million, including $23 million in guaranteed bonuses.
Hasselbeck was a Pro Bowl participant in 2003 when he passed for a franchise-record 3,841 yards, with 26 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. However, he did not have as good a season in 2004, finishing with 3,382 yards, 22 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
Still, the consensus had been that Hasselbeck should be retained, via the franchise tag or a new contract, for the sake of offensive continuity and because he has taken the team to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.
Hasselbeck's agent, David Dunn, had been in contact with the Seahawks several times since the team hired Mike Reinfeldt, its former lead contract negotiator, as a consultant to work on deals with pending free agents. Talks heated up after left tackle Walter Jones signed a seven-year contract last week, and Dunn and Reinfeldt worked out Hasselbeck's deal last night.
Alexander has publicly expressed curiosity about playing elsewhere while maintaining that Seattle is where he wants to remain if a deal can be worked out.
With the franchise tag, the Seahawks can still reach a long-term deal with Alexander until March 16. If there is no deal by then, a contract could not be signed until July. The Seahawks also could try to trade Alexander to another team.
Alexander made the Pro Bowl last season and set a team record with 1,696 rushing yards. That total left him 1 yard short of sharing the NFL rushing title.
If the Seahawks had not signed Hasselbeck, they would have had to offer him a franchise tender worth $8.08 million — the average salary of the NFL's five highest-paid quarterbacks.
The number would have severely depleted the estimated $22 million the Seahawks have in salary-cap room. But they won't take as big a hit with him under a long-term contract.
Alexander's tender will be $6.32 million. He isn't likely to sign immediately. He could skip offseason workouts and training camp, returning in time for the season. Alexander also could decide to skip the entire 2005 season.
Meanwhile, in their search for a team president, the Seahawks interviewed Tim Ruskell, the Atlanta Falcons' assistant general manager, last week.
They also have spoken with Jerry Reese, the New York Giants' director of player personnel, according to the New York Daily News.

QuoteJaguars: Darius franchised again

News
For the third straight year, the Jaguars have placed their franchise tag on safety Donovin Darius. Jaguars senior vice president Paul Vance announced the move Tuesday, meaning Darius will get a one-year deal worth $4.97 million. A source close to Darius told the Florida Times-Union the safety will sign the tender shortly.

The two sides have been unable to reach a long-term contract ever since the Jags first franchised Darius in 2003. At that time, they could have signed him to a long-term deal worth about $4 million per season, albeit with a signing bonus. As it stands, by virtue of the franchise tag Darius will have collected slightly more than $12 million by the end of the 2005 season. Were the Jags to keep Darius around for 2006 by using the franchise tag, it would cost them a cool $6 million.
lol, the guy gets the tag every year and gets flippin mad about it every year.

He's the guy who got in a motorcycle accident and almost died. Great story on him in ESPN the Mag a few months ago. Herm Edwards looked out for him and signed him despite the injuries. I guess his recovery won't allow him to play now? I don't know, but he's cut.

ESPN.com news services
Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles tendered a qualifying offer to restricted free agent Brian Westbrook on Wednesday, giving Philadelphia the right to match any offer he receives or a first-round pick from any team that signs the running back.
The one-year tender will cost the team $1.43 million, but the Eagles have the option of signing the third-year player to a long-term deal.
Westbrook had a breakout season for the Eagles, scoring nine touchdowns and leading the team with 1,515 total yards. A versatile, dual-threat weapon, Westbrook rushed for 812 yards on 177 carries and led all NFL running backs in receptions with 73 for 703 yards last season.
A third-round draft pick out of Villanova in 2002, Westbrook played in his first career Pro Bowl after joining the NFC squad as an injury replacement.
Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins released quarterback Jay Fiedler, ending his five-year run as the much-maligned successor to Dan Marino.
Last season, Fiedler started just seven games for the Dolphins (4-12), going 1-6 while throwing for 1,186 yards, seven touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Fiedler spent much of the 2004 season on the injured list with a herniated disc. Fiedler was due a $2 million roster bonus in March.
The Dolphins also released safeties Arturo Freeman and Shawn Wooden and defensive end Jay Williams.
After Marino left before the 2000 season, Fiedler was the only starting quarterback for former Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt. But after Wannstedt's resignation in November, interim coach Jim Bates replaced Fielder with A.J. Feeley, who won three games the rest of the season.
A call to Fiedler's agent Brian Levy seeking comment was not immediately returned.
Fiedler started one game in six NFL seasons before he started 15 games in 2000 for Miami as the heir to Marino. He led the Dolphins to the first of two straight 11-5 seasons and playoff berths, going 1-2 in the postseason.
The Dolphins would miss the playoffs the next two seasons despite winning records as Fiedler missed nine starts in 2002-03 because of injuries. He missed five starts in 2002 because of a fractured thumb and missed four games in 2003 with a knee injury.
In five seasons with the Dolphins, Fiedler was 36-23 as a starter, throwing for 11,040 yards, 66 touchdown and 63 interceptions. He ranks as the franchise's third-leading passer behind Marino and Bob Griese.
New York Jets: Jamie Henderson, who nearly died in a motorcycle accident in April, was cut Tuesday, according to the New York Daily News.
The team had re-signed him despite the injuries, which kept him from playing this year.
Henderson is enrolled at the University of Georgia, according to the Daily News.
Washington taterskins: Laveranues Coles is not willing to redo his contract, the Washington Post reports.
Coles believes the team agreed to release him, then reneged.
Coles, who had 90 catches this season, would be the second receiver with 90 or more catches to be released. The Titans cut ties with Derrick Mason.
New England Patriots: The Pats released four players, including defensive back Earthwind Moreland, and hired two assistant coaches.
Moreland played in nine games and started two at cornerback last season, filling in for injured starters Tyrone Poole and Ty Law. He had 17 tackles and a fumble recovery.
The Patriots also released defensive lineman Buck Rasmussen, guard Wilbert Brown and tight end Zeron Flemister, none of whom played in a regular-season game last season.

INDIANAPOLIS -- By signing what is believed to be a two-year, $6 million contract, running back Marshall Faulk is literally taking one for the team.
Quote
But as Rams coach Mike Martz said Thursday night at the NFL Scouting Combine, taking less money shows, ``that's who the guy is, and why it's hard not to have great admiration for him. Even with all the money he's made, (a pay cut) can still be a bitter pill to swallow for anyone of his stature.''
According to team sources, Faulk is scheduled to make $2 million in base salary in both the 2005 and 2006 seasons. He also gets a signing bonus of $2 million.
Before the restructuring, Faulk had just completed the third year of a seven-year deal. He was to have made $6 million in base salary and workout bonuses in '05 under the old contract, and was to have counted $7.527 million against the cap.

MM officially released (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1999831)
Bring him in, I like Muhammad.
I know a lot of people don't want him because of his age, but I want him if we can afford him. He's a proven player and I hate taking gambles with receivers in the draft they never work out for us, unless of course we can get Williams or Edwards which isn't likely.
Well, theres age. But more importantly, he's too expensive. Let him get overpaid elsewhere.
I just hate alliteration. F Muhsin Muhammad.
The Pats releasing Ty Law pretty much ensures they will use a 1st round tender for Givens.
He seems like he may be too expensive, but it all depends on what other teams are willing to pay as well. His asking price may get driven down because of his age. I don't think he is going to cost all that much money, but thats more of a hunch than anything else. We all know how careful the Eagles are with the cap so if we do sign him obviously we can afford him and the FO doesn't think he can mess up our cap situation.
As expected...

I wouldn't have minded seeing the Eagles pick him up, but not for the amount that they are assuming.
No big loss, IMO.
That is where I thought he'd go when I first heard during the season that he'd be cut. The question is, do they still take a WR in the draft. I'm not really disappointed because I didn't think he'd come here anyway, but I still would've liked him.

"Meanwhile, reports of Washington's imminent signing of cornerback Samari Rolle are false, said several sources familiar with the situation. According to one club source, Rolle hasn't even been on Washington's list of free-agent targets, largely because of his asking price. One of the hottest rumors at the Indianapolis combine was Rolle going to Washington for a signing bonus of up to $15 million. (Gregg Williams, Washington's assistant head coach of defense, was Rolle's defensive coordinator at Tennessee for Rolle's first three NFL seasons. And Rolle is a former teammate of taterskins safeties coach Steve Jackson.) However, the misinformation was apparently spread to exploit owner Daniel Snyder's reputation for free spending while increasing Rolle's value in free agency. According to one NFL source, Rolle is scheduled to visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday. "

The Saints cleared $3.333 million of cap room by releasing wide receiver Jerome Pathon, who was entering the final year of his contract. Pathon caught 34 passes for 581 yards, but only one touchdown.

Quotetaterskins to Get Patten, Lose Pierce
By Nunyo Demasio
Washington Post Staff Writer
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/w...anguage=printer
Wide receiver David Patten, a free agent from the New England Patriots, agreed to terms with the Washington taterskins this afternoon at taterskins Park, a club source said, and a press conference has been scheduled for tomorrow.
Details of the Patten deal were not disclosed. But the addition of the New England Patriots' wide receiver comes on the day the taterskins refused to match an offer from Antonio Pierce -- the leading tackler on Washington's third-ranked defense -- and lost him to the New York Giants.
Pierce, who did not return telephone messages requesting comment, kept his promise to allow the taterskins to match the highest offer he received as a free agent, but New York's offer of a six-year, $26-million deal, which included a $6.5 million bonus, was out of Washington's price range, according to Coach Joe Gibbs.
"I simply think that at the end . . . it become a situation where we would have kind of thrown our salary structure out. . . . ," Gibbs said at a press conference to announce the signing of center Casey Rabach, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens. "I also think it would have affected us in what we want to do as far as adding other players.
"It's one of those things that you don't want to have happen. I said Antonio played great for us last year. [We would have] loved to get that done. But I think it's one of those things that we went as far as we could go, we felt like. And it's something that just didn't work out. I hate it. I think it's not going to happen very often to us, but I think there's sometimes it could happen."
Pierce is expected to sign with New York today at Giants Stadium. While Gibbs conceded the significance of losing Pierce, he said that the club will pursue all replacement options, including the late April draft.
Middle linebacker Mike Barrow had appeared likely to be released because of a left-knee injury that prevented him from playing last season. Now Barrow, whose injury gave Pierce an opportunity to start, will be strongly considered as his replacement.
At 5-foot-10, 190 pounds, Patten played the last four seasons with the Patriots, who have won three Super Bowls over that span. Despite his size, Patten is an explosive, big-play threat. Last season, Patten had 44 catches for 800 yards for an 18.2-yard average, plus a career-high seven touchdowns. Patten's best season came in 2002, when he had 61 catches for 824 yards. He led the Patriots that season with five touchdowns. Patten, an eighth-year veteran, has also played for the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns.
With Rod Gardner on the trading block and expected to bring a mid- to low-round pick, Washington's No. 2 wideout spot is open. Reserve wideouts James Thrash and Taylor Jacobs are likely to have increased roles next season and will compete to be the no. 2 wideout.
Skins talking about salary structure? :-D
I love this:
Skins will likely lose Gardner and Coles and replace them with David Patten/James Thrash/Darnerian McCants and Taylor Jcobs.
They lost Pierce and replace him with Broke Ass Barrow.
They're going to lose Smoot too.
what in the hell are they DOING?
what they usually do, screw things up.
I actually think the Patten signing will be good for them and this seems to be at least an OK crop of receivers in the draft. Losing Pierce will probably be the biggest blow. He was the difference maker on a very good defense last season.

C'mon now, don't pick on the taterskin fan....it's like teasing the drooling kids on the short bus....
Corey Simon getting in shape and actually playing and Hollis/Rayburn getting more reps helped the run defense as much, if not more then the changes that were made at LB. And the main problem in the LB corp wasn't Sims play in the middle, but Wayne's play outside.
Trot played great, but who's to say he didn't play great due to better DT play and WLB? Also, since he's a taterskin fan, should I mention that Trott was once a skin and did NOTHING for them...

QuoteBills | Holcomb Agrees to Terms - from www.KFFL.com
Fri, 4 Mar 2005 16:44:21 -0800
Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the Buffalo Bills have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent QB Kelly Holcomb (Browns). The contract agreement is for a four-year, $6.6 million deal, including a $2 million signing bonus. Holcomb is expected to compete with QB J.P. Losman for the starting job.
So much for just handing the job to Losman.
But a good signing on their part in case Mr. Cocky doesn't pan out as the starter. Holcomb is a good backup.
In a roundabout way that move by Buffalo might just help the Giants.......
I get the feeling that Fiedler isn't going to want to come to New York now to play back up to Manning, so I wouldn't be surprised that he heads to Cleveland to get the starting job for the Brownies.......
I feel it may help the Giants because imho come hell or high water unless some unforseen disaster strikes Manning isn't coming off the field in 2005. Tossing a ton of money to a back up under those circumstance is a waste imho......

Minnesota will blow the Giants out of the water with what they offer him.
You gotta wonder if Minnesota's ownership situation will prevent them from spending big dollars on Plaxico. Why would Red McCombs allow the team to spend big when he's already set his price to sell anyway?
I was reading somewhere that Minnesota is asking FA's to wait on their payments of the SB's until the summer when the new ownership comes in. The article said that caused them to lose out on Antonio Pierce and to overpay Pat Williams because of it.
"Hey buddy, we'd love to sign you. We'll pay you sometime in the future. Sound like a good deal?" :-D

QuoteCardinals | Starting O-line Set for 2005 - from www.KFFL.com
Sun, 6 Mar 2005 09:28:15 -0800
Kent Somers, of the Arizona Republic, reports Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green said the signing of free agent OT Oliver Ross is the final piece for the club's starting offensive line in 2005. The projected starters include LT Leonard Davis, LG Reggie Wells, C Alex Stepanovich, RG Jeremy Bridges and RT Oliver Ross. "We're a very young offensive line, but we're frisky," Green said. "I think having Oliver come in helps us a lot. He's an emerging talent and that's what we really like."
Eagles coach up another low round guy, and he goes on to start elsewhere. The thing I like about Bridges already cracking the starting lineup (he did actually midway through last year) is that it shows the Eagles really do like some of the young guys they kept instead of Bridges.
QuoteAgent: Burress to visit Giants
By JON KRAWCZYNSKI, AP Sports Writer
March 6, 2005
Free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress will visit the New York Giants on Monday to discuss becoming the deep threat that Eli Manning so desperately needs.
Burress' agent, Michael Harrison, told The Associated Press Sunday that his client will leave from Miami Monday morning and spend the afternoon in New York.
``The Giants are very much appealing to Plaxico,'' Harrison said. ``They have some of the key things we're looking for.''
Harrison said Burress, who has been talking with several teams including the Minnesota Vikings, wants to go to a team with a good tight end, good running back and good quarterback.
With Jeremy Shockey at tight end, Tiki Barber at running back and an emerging Manning throwing the ball, the Giants qualify.
Burress, who spent the list five seasons with Pittsburgh, would bring his considerable size and big-play ability to a Giants offense that sorely needs both.
Starting receivers Amani Toomer and Ike Hilliard had sub-par seasons, failing to catch a touchdown pass. Toomer is coming off a hamstring injury that bothered him for most of the season, and Hilliard was released Thursday after never fulfilling the promise he had when the Giants drafted him seventh overall out of Florida in 1997.
``They need a No. 1 receiver,'' Harrison said. ``Plus, it's New York City and Plaxico is a very marketable guy.''
Burress is the biggest name receiver left on the free-agent market. At 6-foot-5 and 226 pounds, the five-year veteran has the size and speed to get down the field and catch the fade pattern in the end zone, which no doubt is attractive to Manning heading into his first full season as a starter.
His best season came in 2002, when he had 78 catches for 1,325 yards and seven TDs. But an injury last season and quarterback inconsistencies contributed to lower numbers in 2003 and 2004.
Giants owner Wellington Mara was hugely disappointed by last season's 6-10 record, saying he was glad the season was over and the only solution appeared to be to ``get better players.''
With that, the Giants have been one of the most active teams in free agency, signing linebacker Antonio Pierce from Washington for $26 million and giving Jets tackle Kareem McKenzie $37.75 million to protect Manning.
I'm a little late perhaps, but is Denny Green farging insane?! I want Warner's agent next time I negotiate a salary.
Maybe Brenda (not the QB) Warner will melt in the sun or something. Or maybe someone down in Zona will chop of her lezzie haircut and give her something good.

News
The Buccaneers re-signed wide receiver Joey Galloway to a five-year contract on Tuesday, according to the Tampa Tribune. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. The Bucs acquired Galloway prior to last season in a trade that sent disgruntled wideout Keyshawn Johnson to the Cowboys. The 33 year-old wideout missed six games with groin and hamstring injuries. He finished the year with 33 receptions for 416 yards and five touchdowns.
Views
Quarterback Brian Griese has to be pleased, as the salary cap strapped Bucs managed to re-sign Galloway, who will likely start opposite Michael Clayton again this season. Galloway scored all five touchdowns in December last year, which is a good sign that he and Griese were on the same page at season's end.
He'll be awesome in 4-5 years.

QuoteSAN FRAN INKS BOSTON
Eight days after one of the most notorious receivers in the NFL arrived in Oakland, the Raiders' rivals across the Bay have upped the ante.
Desperate to improve a receiving corps that hasn't been the since since T.O. fly the coop for Philly, the San Francisco 49ers have signed free-agent wideout David "Barry Bonds" Boston to a short-term deal, apparently with lots of incentive-based payments.
Boston has had an eventual couple of years. Drafted by the Cardinals in 1999, 'Zona made no effort to keep him in free agency after the 2002 season. The Chargers signed Boston to a big-money deal two years ago, but his one-year stay was marred by incidents ranging from obscene tirades aimed at the strength coach to making phone calls during a game to bolting early from the locker room after a game.
He was traded by the Chargers to the Dolphins a year ago as the Fins tried desperately to bolster their own fleet of pass-catchers. But a ruptured knee tendon knocked him out for the season, and he likewise got in hot water for allegedly assaulting an airport worker as he rehabbed his injury.
The Dolphins recently severed ties with Boston.
Boston once was regarded as one of the most promising receivers in the game, but an apparent obsession with the size of his upper body diminished his speed and effectiveness. Though he still has the potential to be a game breaker, he's essentially become a forgotten man in NFL circles.
And it remains to be seen whether the presence of Boston, who played at Ohio State, will affect the Niners consideration of Michigan receiver Braylon Edwards with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.
Whoever wrote that story needs an editor. In a bad way.

People actually get paid for this shtein.
Nipple rings are okay on the field, sharpies and pom poms are not.
It's convenient for him to be in San Fran. Save money for travel to the Balco trial.

Great, now we'll have to pay Westbrook that much.
The biggest number in there is:
$12 million in guarantees.
The 5 years $26M isn't too bad. But the guaranteed cash is the biggie.

PLAX IS BACK IN NEW YORK
Free agent receiver Plaxico Burress is back in New York, visiting with the Giants.
We received the information via an anonymous tip minutes ago, and we confirmed it through a league source.
Unlike his prior visit, which ended without Burress getting prodded by the Giants' medical staff, Burress is taking a physical.
It's a far cry from a week ago, when Giants G.M. Ernie Accorsi declared that the team is no longer interested in the former Steeler.
Stay tuned.
I honestly hope he signs with the vaGiants.
I'm so sick of hearing about him I want him to sign with the Gints just so I can hate him more.

i don't need to read any article to know that burress is MUCH better than pinkston...and don't give me stats either. the steelers were a run first offense last year...the eagles were the polar opposite.
i know everybody's just doing the usual rip on the giants routine but they needed a legit wr BAD...and burress gives them one. no silly article changes that.

His zesty attitude, refusal to practice on Mother's Day (he actually skipped practice for that entire month) and salary make him a hard player to like.

Plaxico hasn't done much in his career to show ANYONE that he is "leaps and bounds" better than Toomer. Toomer played a bad season last year battling injuries and 2 terrible QBs throwing to him (and no oline protecting them). Toomer gets open, goes team and can out-jump dbacks. Sounds like you watched one season of him.
Toomer was terrible last year, as was Plax. There are circumstances that can support each of their zestyness though. If I had to pick Toomer or Plax, based solely on the on-field skill, I'd pick Plax.
I think Amani's best days are behind him. He's one of the better guys in the game and is a better person than Plax.
Roethlisberger was lobbying hard for them to re-sign him because he liked his ability to go up and get balls and his deep skills. He could help Eli out if they protect Eli.
The bottom line here is that his 6'5 frame will command a double team at times. Unlike when they had Hilliard and/or Carter/Taylor/other scrubs and the Eagles could run a lot of man coverage.
who gives a rats ass anyway, the Eagles are going to beat the shtein out of the Giants with or without Plastic-ho.

Interesting.
The Browns set it up that way so Baltimore wouldn't match it due to the $3M hit for the cap. But the Ravens have like $10M to play with. I guess they're not sold on Musa Smith and/or his recovery from that nasty broken leg isn't coming along good.
I guess they'd prefer to spend $3M on a proven guy instead of playing a rookie if Jamal get hurt or goes back to the clink.

Rams wide receiver Torry Holt renegotiated his deal in a move to help free salary-cap money for the Rams. Holt simply converted most of his 2005 base salary into signing bonus. He still gets the same amount of money, but nearly $2.1 million of it gets spread out over the remaining five years of Holt's contract for cap purposes. The move saves the Rams nearly $1.8 million in cap space for this year.
Between the Pace deal and the Holt restructuring, the Rams suddenly find themselves with about $6.1 million in cap room. Only 11 teams in the league had more cap room at the start of this week.

My completely uninformed guess would be that Johnson wins the slot receiver position from Az-Hakim or that they split time. Johnson isn't worth a ton of money or a starting job for a good team, but he's a perfect slot guy. Good hands and all.
My other guess would be that one of the top three WRs get hurt anyway and his official position on the depth chart won't matter at that point.
Just saw on the ESPN@ crawl that the Jets traded for one of the Raiders TE's. My questions are does this take them out of the market for a TE and if so does Heath Miller fall to the Eagles; if so do the Eagles take him?

My completely informed guess is both KJ and Hakim will be starting by week 6.
I think KJ and Hakim cried themselves to sleep Saturday night.
JK probably killed himself.

QuoteGiants | Looking At Flutie - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 28 Apr 2005 21:54:19 -0700
The New York Times reports free agent QB Doug Flutie (Chargers) visited with the New York Giants on Thursday. He also took a physical for the team. Giants GM Ernie Accorsi described the visit as a routine part of the team's evaluation of available players. It is unclear if negotiations between the Giants and Flutie's agent, Kristen Kuliga, were underway
While the Giants were looking, the Patriots were signing.
Must have missed that signing.
The signing of a 42-year-old backup QB usually gets little hype and less fanfare.
He played for the Patriots back when they had the minuteman on their helmets. :-D

The Dallas Morning News reports the Dallas Cowboys have signed free agent RB Anthony Thomas (Bears) to a one-year deal. Financial terms have not been disclosed.
Jones
Thomas
Barber III
Nice trio of backs there in Dallas...
Barber III could be crap, for all we know, and Anthony Thomas IS crap.
Westbrook > J. Jones
Buckhalter > "A-Train"
Moats > Barber III
Nice trio of backs we have here in Philly. Cowboys still suck.

The same could be said for Moats. Just satisfying the antagonist in me.... ;)
Agreed, but the Eagles picked Moats when Barber III was still on the board.
I don't think A. Thomas sucks, really. And I don't think Buckhalter is better.
I think they both suck. sadly.
Buckhalter's injury-prone, but he doesn't suck when healthy.
Thomas sucks all the time.
I like Buckhalter. He could be a 1,000 yard back in the right system that runs the ball, but sadly he gets hurt. I don't think that means he sucks, just that he has bad luck. Thomas can look really good sometimes and then others just look plain bad.

What in the name of poop would ever make you think that Buck could be a 1000 yard back? I have seen nothing from him to even prove that he should be more than a part time player. Can't catch. Can't block. Knees made out of pretzeled bread... Buckhalter fans kill me.

not sure if anybody cares but the skins released tim hasselback yesterday....i'd bring him to training camp just so i could gawk at his hottie wife.
We'll probably carry 5 or 6 QBs this year, so let's go for it.

She gets bullied by MDS's woman, Star Jones, on that TV show. I think the taterskins should sign Star Jones as a DT.
My wife tells me she's trimmed down. So, Star is more of a pass-rushing DT now than a run-stuffer.

Michael Eisen, of Giants.com, reports the New York Giants were awarded QB Tim Hasselbeck (taterskins) off waivers Monday, May 9. "We got very fortunate that this young quarterback became available just when we need one," general manager Ernie Accorsi said. "We're fortunate especially since we had to wait out the waivers. We are pleased to have him."
Now he just needs to go to Dallas and he'll have completed the NFC East tour.

QuotePatriots bring back two-way Troy Brown
Daily News Wire Services
Troy Brown is coming back for a 12th season with the New Eng-land Patriots.
The receiver-turned-defensive back, whose willingness and ability to play both ways made him the face of the Super Bowl champions' team-first philosophy, agreed yesterday to a 1-year contract with the team.
"In this era, it is very unusual for a player to remain with one team for as long as Troy's career as a Patriot," coach Bill Belichick said in a statement. "Troy Brown is a special player and person and we are glad to have him back."
Brown, 33, was released 2 months ago in a cost-cutting move that saved the Patriots $5 million against the salary cap. But his Gillette Stadium locker remained intact and he reportedly didn't negotiate with other teams.
This can go in both the offensive and defensive FA tracker...lol.

Rice signs with Denver
that is sad. just retire for good already.
The guy loves to play the game, he works his azz off. I don't see why people think they need to tell Rice what to do. Has he put up great numbers of late? No, but he can still help a team and help school the youngsters. Plus he is a great PR stunt to bring attention to the team. :paranoid
He's severely tarnishing his own legacy. And after having the unmitigated GAUL to ask Steve Largent to un-retire his number when he moved to Seattle, I've got no time for the dickhead.

It sucks that he's going to finish his career on yet another team, but I still think that even at his age, he's definately capable of contributing in a limited role, especially on a team like Denver that likes to spread the ball around.

As the article reads this list of FA's won't have many suitors. What will happen to Bobby T???
Quote• Bobby Taylor, cornerback, Seahawks: Taylor has been replaced as the Seahawks' third cornerback, and chances that he would be moved to safety ended with the Seahawks' plans to sign Bucs safety John Howell in June. Taylor has a bad knee that might hurt him on the open market.
I suppose the fact that he tackles like a matador (sp?) had nothing to do with it.
Athletes who don't know when to retire. People who embarrass themselves so publicly are pathetic. It's over, accept it.

The Kansas City Star reports free agent WR Freddie Mitchell (Eagles) will workout for the Kansas City Chiefs next week. President and general manager Carl Peterson confirmed Mitchell's visit late Thursday, June 2 and said the Chiefs will do some bargain hunting in the coming weeks, specifically at receiver, but would sign someone only if they could get him on the cheap. "I guess I'm interested in seeing him come in and work out to see why he failed," Peterson said. " Peterson said the Chiefs planned to bring in at least one other receiver.

lmfao
The Chiefs really need another WR who can catch 25-35 passes. Badly.
I don't know if Freddie can handle that kind of workload. They'd really be pushing his limits.
is this finally the year there is no more Morten Andersen or
Gary Anderson ?
Nah. Some guy will get hurt and Morten or Gary will climb out of the wheelchair and come in to boot 20 yard FG's but look like poo on the longer ones.
Oh yeah...
The taterskins signed the injury prone WR Kevin Dyson and worked out Antonio Freeman.
James Thrash? Check.
Antonio Freeman? Check.
Gari Scott? Check.
Dameane Douglas? Check.
So when will we see Na Brown, Todd Pinkston, Torrance Small and Charles Johnson in taterskins camp? :-D
Pinkston? I don't want Pinky there!
Freddie would be a nice fit.
Hakim signed with Chiefs.
Just kidding. :deion
