Gonna be a shteinshow unless they find a way to limit it to locals.

You'd think a virus that could potentially kill your kids, Meemaw, and Uncle Derrik who had the butt cancer would do that, but here we are.

The man. The myth. The legend.

honestly opening up Disney World and the beaches in may could be a blessing in disguise.  thinning the herd as quickly as possible so the smart people can go back to making things happen in the fall.

Rome

Half a million dead and twenty-five million infected in the US seems like a reasonable projection right now.

Have fun at the beach, though.   Yippee!

We should be thankful people are willing to risk exposure so herd immunity can start taking its toll. That's the only way out of this. Enough healthy people gain immunity, suddenly it stops spreading on such a grand scale. A vaccine is a pipe dream. It sucks but opening things up is inevitable. People with underlying conditions and their families should stay quarantined and take extreme caution. It's a perfect median between the two extremes.

PhillyPhreak54

stay home if you want to, people say, and let me go out!

Ok sure. That's fine.

However the people saying this don't give a shtein about the retail people at the stores they just have to go to. Nor do they give a shtein about the barbers, stylists, waitresses or whatever other employee is given the "come to work or lose your job" ultimatum.

Billy Joe needs to saddle up to that Applebee's bar and Cyndi needs her tips frosted and a pedicure!!

How do you see this ending? The curves flattened, you can continue to keep drastic restrictions in place but it's not going to magically disappear. It's going to spread at some point. Even Fauci is talking about a second wave in the fall. Better to start herd immunity in the summer when the weathers hot meaning the virus contamination period is lessened and more people are spending time outside where the virus doesn't spread like it does indoors. Knock it out now, otherwise you're delaying the inevitable. I'll gladly listen to any counter arguments that don't have us with the impossible scenario of the US being quarantined until 2021.

It wouldn't be impossible to quarantine (such as it is, what we're doing is really a half measure of "Quarantine") if the fed gov was at all interested in making it possible, not to mention using this time to find ways to make it possible to loosen some restrictions. South Korea has been able to figure it out. We gotta stop talking about it like it's impossible, it just gives this Admin a pass on their abject failures.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

The federal government is interested, they passed a $2.6 trillion stimulus, ordered stay at home, closed businesses, made wearing masks mandatory...hell even dum dum was giving a nightly press conference. The cats already out of the bag. Containment is impossible. SK started early and had it somewhat under control. Saying we should be like them makes no sense because our situations aren't comparable. Aside from mass testing (no complaints here) you either shut it down and wait it out only to have it spread later or get it over with now.

to follow the medical scientific consensus (not some camera-loving quack put forward by teevee personalities)

Stay home unless absolutely necessary.
Wear a mask at all times outside the home.
Tentatively Re-open businesses in stages, triggered by objective, measureable reductions in ICU admissions, deaths, and only in combination with
Free plentiful and accurate testing combined with exhaustive contact tracing and quarantine (under force of law) for infected and exposed (but not immune) individuals
Universal basic income until vaccine is widely available

something like that...evidence and research guided, could change as we learn more

What you want to do is kill my mother and my aunt because you think they're weak and you want to go to Disneyland

I echo what Dio said.

It will never happen because of the clown show GOP people from the federal level all the way down to the local level. The whole "mah freedomz" crowd is exhausting.

The GOP doesn't believe in science. So therefore they are not willing to take scientifically rooted steps in eradicate or control this.

But since Cheeto Dick and his band of ignorant idiots ignored this early on - putting the shtein back in the goose has become impossible. Had they addressed this, and also not taken active steps to dismantle any sort of pandemic related committees, in January/February then we'd be WAY past this.
