When I worked on Death Row one of the guys I talked to often was the killer of Luttig’s father, Napoleon Beazley. He was one of the orderlies on G-Block (double celled). His cellie was also one whom I spoke with a lot.
Luttig's father, John Luttig, was fatally shot in 1994 in a carjacking by Napoleon Beazley, who, at the time of the crime, was a seventeen-year-old minor.[16] Luttig testified in the sentencing portion of the trial, providing testimony supporting imposition of the death penalty.[16] Beazley was convicted, condemned to death, and eventually executed after twice appealing to the Supreme Court
He was 22 at the time and I was 19 so we talked a lot of sports and he was one of the nicest guys you could talk with. He came from a good family and was a start running back. He got caught up with the wrong crowd one night and they wanted to jack a Mercedes. So they did. And the judge was killed and his wife shot and ended up testifying bc she heard one of the guys say Beazley’s name.
It’s a shame that he was executed prior to the law being changed where the DP wasn’t allowable for people whose crime was committed while under the age of 18.
I transferred off the row before his execution but I followed his case close. Had I stayed on the row he wanted me to be one of the people who escorted him off the unit to the unit where the penalty was carried out.
Every once in awhile I think about him and a few others I met there. So seeing Luttig on TV today reminded me of him.
