Biden would also crush imo but he's the only less-progressive candidate that I think would. His somewhat zesty history on policy could dampen progressive excitement but I think he built up enough good will during his Veep years to not ever be hated nearly as much as HRC was.

Right now the only candidate polling anywhere near Biden with black voters is Bernie. And really the worry is young black voters, as they're the ones that were more likely to stay home in 2016 when HRC was the candidate, and the ones more likely to support Bernie. The Dem candidate is going to get 90-94% of the black vote, what matters more is how much of the overall electorate those voters make up. Bernie is a candidate that can excite young black voters enough to increase their turnout and also lure some of the WWC voters back to the Dems.

But if any old white guy wins the nomination I think they almost have to put a POC on the ticket. Castro would make a great VP pick but a Hispanic VP won't drive enthusiasm in the black community. Harris/Booker/Abrams/Gillum/etc have to be favorites for the VP slot if a white person wins the nomination.

This only cites the one poll but there have been a few where he actually does better with black voters than white voters compared to Biden

It seems weird to think what the people want is moderate half measures when they rejected the queen of moderate half measures just 2 years ago.

Polls are mostly useless at this point because it's almost all name rec, but right now Bernie is the only candidate besides Biden that's leading trump outside of the MOE on national and state level polls. Additional polling shows his main policies tend to be popular. And every nerd has been saying that if Trumps net approval rating stays below -7 it would be incredibly hard for him to win
