Having been through what I've been through pain-wise, I can see why people check out when it gets to be too much.  The hurt that me taking myself out would cause my wife and especially my daughter would prevent me from taking that path unless I was in excruciating 24/7 pain.  I still have a shtein ton I want to see and do in this life regardless.
