Almost as bad: they raped my mother and her sister for about 8 years, until the girls were 14 or so... and protected the priest who did it, who died without facing any consequences

My mother's first husband beat the shtein out of her, cheated on her, divorced her, and for her troubles my mom got ex-communicated by the church.  He, on the other hand, got the marriage (that produced my 4 half-siblings) annulled and he got married in the same church that banned my mom.

Also - my father was actually waiting for his entry into the seminary to become a priest when he got called up for Korea. After what he saw there, he instead stayed in the Army Corps of Engineers and built the fake towns in the Nevada desert they blew up with atomic bombs.

When he met my mom they applied for her reinstatement into the church, but she was denied.  They got married and his family all but disowned him for marrying my harlot of a mother.  He was also ex-communicated from the church for marrying her. 

So yes, the church can go farg itself high, hard and deep.
