Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

PhillyPhreak54

After you, TexicoTodd.

Who is this guy they picked 2nd, Beane?

PhillyPhreak54

Oh another SoCal kid who wanted to go to UCLA

Moniak fails the name test and the look test and the earliest he would contribute is 2020. I'm about 50/50 on whether he ever plays for the Phillies.

Don't tank in baseball.

ice grillin you

unless harper or strasburg are at the top

really there is nothing wrong with tanking in baseball...if you aren't going to win then lose big...thats sports 101...at least I baseball there is no lottery to screw you

its just that philly teams don't get lucky like other cities....they get moniak drafts where there wasn't two guys to choose from at the top there were 5-6 guys they could have taken
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

igy gettin it done like warrick

im the board pharmacist....always one step above yous

Most MLB drafts are Moniak drafts. When Griffey goes into the HOF next month he will be the first #1 pick to do so, which is a world away from the NBA, NFL, and even NHL. And the Phillies are one of two teams over the last 25 years to draft a guy #1 who made a meaningful contribution to a World Series winning season with them (the other being Luke Hochevar last year who is a fine reliever but isn't exactly a superstar either) so I don't think the Philly woe-is-me stuff applies here.

Most of baseball's dominant franchises rarely if ever see the early picks in the draft. As a big market team presumably capable of hiring big market scouting, developmental coaching, and management, the Phillies if run correctly should never need to suck for 8 years and then get lucky enough to pull two face cards like the Nats did. Just develop a deep bench of quality players from later in the draft and plug up the holes with free agents like the other big boy teams do, and like the Phillies successfully did in the late 90s and early 2000s. The Phillies inability to grow even a couple meaningful players during the Amaro years is the outrage, not failing to be abnormally lucky like the Nats were (the Nats who have yet to win a playoff series). The Phillies have historically been a loser franchise, but it's not bad luck or a Philly curse, it's ineptness that has come down from the top.

ice grillin you

they are all moniak drafts except when they aren't...and when the nats puck first overall

either way if you have no chance for the playoffs and aren't an up and coming team you should tank and go for 1-1....always

three high schoolers for them thus far

Quotecole stobbe - ss

No Nebraska high school position player ever has been selected in the top two rounds or 60 picks in the Draft, but Stobbe could become the first this June. He's an infielder with a chance to have average or better tools across the board once he moves off shortstop, and scouts love his makeup as well. He has a track record of performing on the biggest amateur stages, helped Team USA win a gold medal at the 18-and-under World Cup in Japan last September and led Millard West (Omaha) to the Nebraska Class A championship game while earning Gatorade state player of the year honors this spring.

With his quick, compact right-handed stroke, Stobbe laces line drives to all fields. He added some strength before his senior season and drove the ball more consistently this spring, finishing among the national high school leaders with 14 home runs. He could be a .280 hitter with 15-18 homers per year in the big leagues.

An average runner with good instincts on the bases and in the field, Stobbe lacks the quickness and arm strength to play shortstop in pro ball. He should be able to handle the offensive and defensive responsibilities at either second or third base. One scout called the Arkansas recruit a poor man's version of Rockies rookie sensation Trevor Story, who was a supplemental first-rounder as a Texas high schooler in 2011.
