the farm system now is actually in really good shape. it doesnt have an other worldly prospect, like corey seager or kris bryant, but jp is pretty close.

you have a lot of guys with decent chances to 1 day become major leaguers. hit on a few of them, buy up some FAs starting in 17 and we might have something going here. especially when the new gm comes in.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Which one has Tommy John first and will the catcher be the second coming of  Lou Marson??

That's how I see it. They are well positioned to become a regular team again instead of an unmitigated disaster with no future. It's up to the next administration to take them to the next step of being competitive. Or to straggle along and turn this into a lost decade, whatever. I think ownership is willing to spend, so a competent front office should be able to get them back to being a playoff caliber team before decade end. Baby steps.

All of these prospects could bomb out and Hamels could be great for another five years, but at some point they had to pull the trigger on a deal like this. Especially since they waited too long to trade Lee.

MDS

they are paying some portion of hamels' deal and took on that dreadful harrison contract in order to get back the haul

they havent been cheap for almost a decade now. they arent cheap.

@Ken_Rosenthal: Source: #Phillies sending $9.5M to #Rangers in Hamels deal and assuming Harrison's remaining obligation, which amounts to about $34M.

I've been critical of Heidi over the years but I have to say when I woke up this morning and saw that he'd been dealt, I felt a twinge of regret.   2008 seems so far away right now.  Whatever, though.  They got a decent return but legit #1 aces are so hard to come by, I have a feeling this is a trade they're (and more importantly we're) going to regret for a long time.   Maybe not as much as the Schilling trade, but close.

Williams and Alfaro are good pieces. I thought thePhils would have got more, but it could have been worse. It's like a C+

basically what jim bowden said but he gave it a B

rangers held onto their top two prospects got a number one starter for the next three years and got paid....gave them an A

Phillies got a couple guys who might make the majors at some point...said alfaro should be a 20 hr catcher

they have/had no chance of winning before Heidi is old and declining....there is zero chance they ever regret trading him

the downside here is obviously all on what they got back being garbage...whereas there is 0 percent downside in moving Heidi

The blowback about Hamels was always dumb.  Good luck in Texas.

You don't think they regret trading Sandberg or Rolen or Schilling or Lee or any other of the innumerable trades that they received sacks of magic beans back in return?

schilling no....basically the same situation as heidi cept schilling wanted out bad...guy in his early 30's on a phillies team that was at least five years away from winning....this was basically the baseball verison of the barkley trade

rolen no....but its not comparable....he wanted out and they were going to lose him for nothing....if he wasnt a little bitch they def would have kept him....plus they went on to win a world series after dealing him...how could you regret getting rid of a bitchmade middle american and winning a ws

sandberg 100% they regret...but again its not comparable to heidi's situation in the least...he was a 21 year old prospect

lee they also def regret...but also not comparable to heidi....they were a world series favorite....you think if they were even in the wild card race right now much less a ws contender that heidi would have been dealt?

theres a difference between looking back and being sickened at the return you got for a particular guy and regretting actually trading the guy away...heidi may fall into the bad return column like lee or schilling but not the sandberg column where you cant believe you traded the guy away
