I just can't stand outfits like number Fire and shut who plug meaningless shtein into a computer that spits out absurd numbers

If the Lakers finish 4th and the lottey I'd not rigged then yes real math says they have a 17% chance to get the pick...but this 70+% the other day and still now over 60% to get the Miami pick is ridiculous as was the 10% to get the thunder pick

Also on a diff note thst dope bodner within the last week was still rooting for Miami losses

Biggest game of the season thus far tonight when Chicago goes to Miami...this is pretty easily miamis toughest game left and with no other contenders playing tonight they can pick up a game on everyone then sit back and watch them all tomorrow nite while they wait for Toronto on Saturday...btw game is on tnt

Next week they have Orlando at home and incredibly finish the year at the wock....I'd like them to clinch the pick for the sixers before then however my morbid curiosity would like to witness the epic blatant in your face tank job the sixers would do that night

The numbers for the Miami and OKC picks aren't any more ridiculous than the 17% to get the Lakers pick. They are basic Monte Carlo simulations and are the best way to predict the complicated interactions of a lot of different teams. [I'm sure their model assumes all teams are trying to win games, which is why I said I think the odds are a bit high.] The same kinds of simulations are used to design and analyze the engineering of technologies and infrastructure you rely on every day. Running them on sports is even easier because sports produce a very predictable distribution of results. This actually isn't VORP-ish type of math in my opinion. It's just the consequence of knowing that better teams beat worse teams a certain percentage of the time (which varies by sport and by how large the gap is between the teams), and additional factors that can be shown to have large effects on outcome.

By the way, the odds of getting the Heat pick are now above 80% and the Thunder pick is a mere 1.6%. Maybe as a sports pessimist you see the Heat as currently in the #10 spot and think that's crazy. But all it takes is one of four teams who are right there to drop below them, and humans tend to underestimate how much of an effect adding extra teams and games into the mix can have (see: teasers).

Agreed about Bodner though. He seems to think getting 11 instead of 16 is more important than getting the pick at all.

They are ridiculous because they are so wrong and it's a bunch stuff that you don't need to put in a computer to figure out

The lakers number isn't ridiculous because it's based on simple math due to the number of ping pong balls available

The NBA draft lottery uses a random number generator with weighted inputs. That's exactly what a Monte Carlo simulation does. One is a ping pong ball machine and one is a computer. If you ran either one a billion times you'd get pretty close to the exact mathematical odds.

The only difference is that the weighting of the inputs to the ping pong machine is precisely defined and the weighting of the inputs to the simulator is determined from data mined from 10s of thousands of NBA games and found to have predictive power.

i agree that the computer has as much chance at picking games as the lottery balls....but neither know anything about basketball....particularly games that have not yet been played

QuoteFirst of all, the audacity of that #8 to try and reach on big Dario. THAT'S HOW YOU GET PUT IN THE SPIN CYCLE, SON. Do they even have washing machines in Lithuania? Big D shakes off #8 like a gnat, then picks his enormous Croatian head up to find some sneaky, skinny dude slippin' backdoor for the jammy-jam. And then the skinny dude does a chin-up on the rim! Love you, skinny dude! That's how you finish a Croatian look-away!
