Was listening to the radio broadcast today and as Marlon Byrd stepped to the plate in the 9th, they were talking about how mad Byrd was at himself for 1st pitch swinging yesterday with the bases loaded.  Then Byrd hacked at the 1st pitch and fouled out to end the game.

This is what infuriates me. It's not that they aren't good. It's that they mail it in when they're down. At least work a farging count and try to get something to hit. And it wasn't just Byrd, but I think 3 of the 4 batters in the 9th swung at the 1st pitch. They get down in a game and say farg it and seem to do everything they can to get the game over with rather than at least putting the work in.

They definitely sink, there's no disputing that.  You can be bad but still play smart, so there's a difference between being bad and being stupid. This team happens to be both.

I wouldn't call it ironic. I'm not knocking the guy and saying he's the reason they suck, or that he sticks.  He's having a pretty nice year so far.  I just thought it was funny that they were talking about how mad he was about not being patient at the plate when the bases are loaded, but then he hacks at the 1st pitch down 4 with 2 out in the 9th.

i would trade him ASAP

the phillies are 5 years from being good (if that) and giles is unlikely to be this dominate in 5 years. that has nothing to do with him, its the fickle nature of relief pitching. 5 years into his career papeldouche didnt have the same value. neither will kimbrel. i doubt giles will still be hitting 99 after 350 more innings.

oh wait i forgot rube has the fix and by 2016 the phillies will be winning divisions again. silly me.
