The new NFL is a pass friendly league. The rules have shifted dramatically over the last decade+ to protect QBs and open up the passing game. Remember when QBs and WRs needed a year or 2 to make the transition to the pros?  Those days are mostly gone. Look at how many rookie QBs are leading teams to the playoffs. Look how many rookie receivers are impact players from day 1.

I'm not saying this means that any college QB can play in the NFL, but it stands to reason that the door is open a little wider for mid-round guys than it was a few years ago because certain dynamics have changed.  In 2003 Nick Foles probably doesn't make a lot of NFL rosters but in 2013 he throws 7 tds in a game.  Go figure.

Obviously, if you're in a position to get a top ranked guy in the draft you take it. But I think that the modern NFL is going to allow for a least a few legitimate success stories to come out of the middle rounds.
