Lieberthal is possibly the best catcher in Phillies history. Right now I'd say Ruiz gets the nod but all time the only other catcher comparable is Boone.

And did Rowand get an ovation when he came back? I honestly can't remember. But if you can't understand why a player who smashes his face into a wall to make a catch would be popular in Philly then you don't know the city.

Don Ho

Goddamn was Abreu part of some horrible Phillies teams.  I forgot all about the Ron Gant experiment.

He got a standing O and then got booed. And Rowand should be loved for his GRIT; but that should only go so far. Abreu put up numbers and performed for a high level for years on AWFUL teams.

SD

Good for him, he did nothing memorable and wasn't a fan favorite. He's been gone now for 6 seasons. He got basically no reaction. Who cares.

PhillyPhreak54

I don't get the nothing memorable argument or the fan favorite thing either.

When would opportunities have presented themselves to be memorable like Matt Stairs? When they were 60-85 in late August?

The fact that fans do not recognize the numbers put up is his fault? He played in front of about 20k people a night (if that) and the myth that he was unclutch and soft is ridiculous.

SD

He was here for 10 years and did nothing memorable. Let that sink in for a second.

PhillyPhreak54

1998: 75-87
1999: 77-85
2000: 65-97
2001: 86-76
2002: 80-81
2003: 86-76
2004: 86-76
2005: 88-74

No playoffs. And you say nothing memorable because he didn't have a Rowand moment? Because he didn't hit a PH HR in an LCS?

MDS

what was he supposed to do that was memorable? tell kevin millwood to lose weight? at first they just plain sucked, then they got better but not good enough because of some mediocre pitching.

the failures of those teams do not fall on him. so, yea, he didnt do anything "memorable" because he didnt have the chance because ed wade was a moron.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

SD

You're both thick...I mean, I love you both, but Jesus Christ I can't go on any longer with this. You've both been in Texas too long...get out now while you're still semi normal. It's amazing after 10 pages I keep having to explain the same thing over and over and you keep going back to something that has nothing to do with the original subject. I give up. You win. And more importantly, Abreu wins.

PhillyPhreak54

lol...a good spirit debate is always good.

Hey look! Chris Coste! Better than Bobby A?!

i understand what you mean. i know why hes not popular. but you have to go back...when he was traded he got a standing O as a goodbye. when he got voted into the all star game he got an ovation. the fans did like him.

my thing is 6 years later no one remembers him b/c the fans that go werent around then. the small handful that do are WIPers who jerk off to face smashing white people.

then you and johnny cakes chime in with a whole bunch of unfounded nonsense about him not being clutch, not doing anything memorable, as if that is all of the sudden the barometer for being received in a town full of losers and a team thats won two farging titles in 130 years.

If :CF were the United States then this discussion would be Alabama.

Munson

SD just admitted he loved Todd.

Let that one marinate for a little bit....preferably on some treated wood.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds
